For every rags-to-riches story in Apple's App Store, every amazing tale of Joe Coder in his basement turning a dead-simple idea into a few thousand dollars a day, there are... well, zero in the Android Market. At least, that's the impression we're getting by digging into revenue stats published this week by mobile game house Larva Labs, lamenting the stark disparity in the economics between the two mobile distribution platforms. Despite having two apps prominently featured on the Market's home screen and racking up sales rankings of 5 and 12 overall, Larva Labs' $4.99 RetroDefense and Battle for Mars games are grossing between about $30 and $110 a day for the company -- with a scant $62 average. As they wryly note, it's "very difficult to buy the summer home at this rate." Sure, granted, there's plenty of garbage in the hopelessly overcrowded App Store -- stuff that'll never earn a dime -- but what's a little shocking here is that both of these apps are Android Market superstars and they're still not able to cover the rent.
The problem is twofold: first, the target audience is smaller. Android simply hasn't achieved the global market penetration that the iPhone has -- at least, not yet. Globally, Android sales to consumers have totaled in the seven figures -- 5 million might be a reasonable guess -- whereas Apple's pushed another order of magnitude worth of devices, something on the order of 25 million iPhones, and if you tack on the iPod touch (which you should for the purpose of running these numbers) you're totaling over 30 million. Second, Larva Labs mentions a number of systematic problems with the Market -- teething problems that Google's yet to address -- including a lack of screenshots in app descriptions, a dearth of payment methods, the seemingly preferential treatment free apps receive, and a litany of miscellaneous bugs and issues (Android owners will fondly recall the inability to find updated apps a couple months back, for instance).
And now the million-dollar question, if you'll forgive our pun: will the Market get to the point where it's a logical business proposition for devs? In all likelihood, yes -- but it's going to take plenty of additional commitment from manufacturers, carriers, and Google itself to make the place a friendly joint for buyers and sellers alike. In the meantime, thanks to the wonders of modern capitalism, Android's app variety is fated to place a distant second, third, or fourth.

The ScummVM Team have released a new version of ScummVM for just about every system ever, firstly heres some info about scummVM:
ScummVM is a program which allows you to run certain classic graphical point-and-click adventure games, provided you already have their data files. The clever part about this: ScummVM just replaces the executables shipped with the games, allowing you to play them on systems for which they were never designed!
Some of the adventures ScummVM supports include Adventure Soft's Simon the Sorcerer 1 and 2; Revolution's Beneath A Steel Sky, Broken Sword 1 and Broken Sword 2; Flight of the Amazon Queen; Wyrmkeep's Inherit the Earth; Coktel Vision's Gobliiins; Westwood Studios' The Legend of Kyrandia and games based on LucasArts' SCUMM (Script Creation Utility for Maniac Mansion) system such as Monkey Island, Day of the Tentacle, Sam and Max and more. You can find a thorough list with details on which games are supported and how well on the compatibility page. ScummVM is continually improving, so check back often.

It would be really great to test as many games as possible on all variety platforms our project is ported to.

Zodttd has updated the Snes emulator for the Iphone, heres his news:
Hi everyone!
Lots of ZodTTD activity behind the scenes as of late. The first to be reported on is snes4iphone. It received two major updates since I last reported on it.
As you may already know, snes4iphone is my port of the Super Nintendo emulator named PocketSNES to the iPhone and iPod Touch series of devices. I had recently updated it to v4.0.0. It was a nice update but I couldn't stop there. I was able to save and restore the R9 register properly within the assembly emulation "cores" used in PocketSNES (with credit due to Notaz for his great work writing the assembly CPU core).
So what does this all mean? It means I release v5.0.0 of snes4iphone which gives massive performance increases. The hand written assembly code produced very noticeable performance gains.
Even better, previous save states are compatible, SRAM saves now work, and the user interface has been made to match the gpSPhone updates. This means 1000's of ROMs can be loaded, and tons of other fixes. You also now have the option to smooth scale (hardware scaling filter) the screen. It does lower performance a bit though.
Any downsides? Well yes. Super Mario RPG is no longer compatible. I will look into this.
Note that enabling transparencies in the settings menu may be needed to overcome graphical glitches in games. It's disabled by default for performance reasons.
Hope you enjoy!

Open source gaming is a real in thing these days and companies are trying their best to muscle in and get a piece of the pie, what with Sonys new app store, Apples app store, Xbox Community Games, DSI Ware, Wii Ware, Openmoko to name but a few.
In the Homebrew arena we already have the Open source consoles GP32, GP2X, Wiz, Dingoo and Sometime this year (hopefully) the Pandora.
But the announcement last night that a new Android based games console should really be an eye opener for Homebrewers too.
Heres a screen:

Heres some of the specs thanks to engadget
The gadget underground has been buzzin' with clandestine chatter relating to Android MIDs lately, and now a company called Hardkernel is concocting a handheld game platform and media player based on the open source OS and the same processor as the iPhone 3GS. And you know what? This is a pretty cool idea for a device, even if the company's website leaves us frightened and confused. ODROID is a 3.5-inch (320 x 480 capacitive touchscreen) concept that sports a 600MHz Samsung S5PC100 ARM Cortex A8 CPU, HDMI output (720p), composite video output, microSD and SD card slots, and WiFi b/g. We're not entirely sure when (or if) this thing will see the light of day, or for how much, but you'll know as soon as we do. Promise.
If im right this has the same chip as the Pandora so should be good for emulation speed.
What are your thoughts on yet another handheld into the Gaming scene. ?

In a David-and-Goliath style fight, small music companies are battling it out with established behemoths to see who can own the future of mobile music. Spotify, the Europe-based music streaming company, is about to launch its iPhone app and has plans to develop it for other mobile platforms soon. In a preview, Spotify shows how you can cache songs to your iPhone so that you don't always need a connection but the songs don't remain on your iPhone permanently. Nokia, on the other hand, has just announced two more music phones that will feature Comes With Music, an unlimited music-download service that involves a one time fee, which is part of the price of the CMW phone, and lets you download music for free (and you get to keep it) for a year. The question remains, are people more likely to stream or download music on their mobile phones?

The talk of "convergence" - the unification of computers, set-top boxes, and mobile devices - has been around for a while. And for the most part it's been pure vapor. However, there's reason to believe that if anyone can do it, it's Apple.
There's an increasing crescendo of rumormongering - most of it emanating from Piper Jaffray research analyst Gene "Herman" Munster - of a new Apple TV release on September 9. You remember Apple TV, right? Everybody's favorite WTF? device has been sort of hanging around waiting for its killer app. iTunes downloads and Flickr galleries, obviously, were not it.

"I... must... have... more... power!"
It seems that legendary line from Star Trek can now be attributed to millions of Apple customers, too.
Strategy Analytics is out with a new study - conveniently titled "Retaining and Attracting New Customers: Profiling the Apple iPhone User" - revealing that iPhone users want more power.
Of all the ideal features Apple customers can envision for future updates to the iPhone, their low satisfaction with battery life far surpasses other concerns, like the quality of the device's camera, for example.

We know you don't really need any more evidence that Apple is gearing up to unveil at least two new iPod revisions at its forthcoming 'rock and roll' event, but are you seriously going to hit the ignore button on these? If you'll recall, last year's visit to Hama's IFA booth gave us early access to cases of Apple's then-upcoming round of iPod nanos, and this year the company seems to be disclosing all of Cupertino's secrets once more. On hand were cases for Apple's fifth-generation iPod nano and the third-generation iPod touch, both of which seem to make room for a built-in camera. Of course, these lovely peripherals could be nothing more than a complete waste of company resources, but we'd encourage you to browse the gallery below before jumping to that conclusion.

Evidence suggests that the Android Market has a long way to go to be a profitable enterprise for would-be developers, but the good news is that Google seems to understand -- and they're doing something about it. Those in-the-wild shots of a totally rethought interface have turned out to be legit, being made official today by Android's official dev site; the beautified UI itself isn't really anything to write home about, but what makes it all worthwhile is the addition of screenshots and improvements to descriptions that should do a much better job of letting users know what they're getting for their hard-earned cash. Otherwise, there are a few new app categories and Italian support, all of which should bow with the release of Android 1.6 Donut. Sholes, Morrison, you fellas can't come soon enough. Follow the break for official video of the new Market in action.

You know, sometimes if you just study hard, keep your nose clean, and stay away from the pirate cable TV business, fate will do you a solid. For instance, check this post by PreCentral forum member go4craig. Today, the hapless youngster innocently applied webOS Doctor in a bid to reset his phone back to factory and wouldn't ya know it? When all was said and done, the phone's operating system was upgraded to webOS 1.2. And what's more, the maneuver has been repeated successfully by a handful of other forum members.
What can the accidental early adopter expect for their trouble? How about account information for the App Catalog (a sign of paid apps to come), a Select All option in the browser's edit menu, and some changes in GPS location services. In addition to all this inadvertent newness, the update is said to have "much improved (zoom animation)" and a number of "little tweaks throughout." Sadly, as of this writing the gang at Palm seem to have plugged the leak. But chin up, little ones -- we're sure an official release must be imminent.

Marco Tempest] has developed some software called MultiVid that allows synchronized video across multiple iPhone or iPod Touch devices. For this to work, all of the devices must be connected to the same WiFi network. Playback can be controlled from any one of the iPhones/iPod Touches or from the Mac running the controller software. There is of course the option of connecting to larger monitors through a video output cable. The app also supports OSC. We’ve embedded the example video as well as a video detailing the software setup after the break.
The client software is available at the apps store and controller software can be downloaded from [Marco's] website. Both are free which is our favorite price point.

We've seen plenty of odd Android permutations, but UMEC seems to be striving to do something all its own. It's showing two devices it currently has in the works, one is a videophone / hub / DECT phone / etc. unit (pictured), which might be at home on a countertop, while the other is a brightly hued MID, with similar internal specs but more portable aims. Both are running ARM Cortex A8 processors (like the iPhone 3GS), though there's some significant OS optimization to be done: everything was incredibly sluggish on the videophone, and the MID was locked up at the time we dropped by. UMEC also doesn't have the touchscreen drivers working for either device, though the good news is that they're looking at both capacitive and resistive touchscreens, based on what the reseller that picks these up desires. Luckily, the videophone has USB plugs galore (along with plenty of Ethernet jacks) so we were able to get a quick demo of the device using a mouse and keyboard. The MID also has a full-size USB plug, and both devices sport HDMI out, so the end usage for both of these is really up in the air. Check 'em out on video after the break.

The Canadian Private Copying Collective is pushing for the implementation of an iPod fee in Canada to compensate them for 'losses' when people copy music to their digital music players. They have collected a fee from every CDR sold in Canada since 1997 and now want to extend that to digital music players. From the article: 'Some have argued that once they buy a CD they shouldn't have to pay again and again to listen to those songs — which they already purchased — on a personal compilation CD or on their MP3 player. But for people like Milman and Basskin, it's about recognizing the value of those works. "There has to be some sort of way to compensate the artist for the hours and the sweat and the blood and the tears and the extreme, extreme expense that goes into making music," Milman said

Gone is the era when the television remote control was a fascinating, much cherished device and beloved member of the family.
By conventional standards, the TV remote is old hat - nothing new or exciting. And while still practical and very helpful around the living room, its stature has been steadily diminished by a wide array of much neater, sexier gadgets in recent years.
This summer served yet another blow to the ego of remote controls everywhere, as advancements in the smartphone realm continue at a pace that could very well see the television remote facing extinction before the familiar little gadgets can even brace for it - like an asteroid penetrating our atmosphere to obliterate the dinosaurs before the poor creatures even knew what him 'em.

Sony Europe's head of developer relations, Zeno Colaco, has gone all USA-hardcore on Apple when it comes to how both companies deal with developers. This, of course, comes as Sony's PSP attempts to take on Apple's iPhone in the 'snackable' applications market.
Colaco starts by telling Develop, "Unlike with the App Store, we’re looking to support everyone that develops for us, instead of leaving developers out in the wilderness." Ouch.
But then Zeno slaps Apple AppStore devs as well, "I’m not suggesting that iPhone developers are unprofessional, but I think that the App Store has attracted a number of hobbyists. Clearly, the PSP is designed for gaming." Ouch.
So, how is Sony going to avoid having a bunch of rank amateurs all over its platform? Easy, "We’re not immediately interested in giving developers free access and no help", charging for development.

Rob Hearn sends in a piece up at PocketGamer.co.uk on why Apple suddenly pulled Manomio's C64 emulator soon after finally approving it. (El Reg has coverage too.)
"It was a glorious few moments for retro gamers when Manomio's C64 emulator was finally approved by Apple and released to the eager, nostalgic iPhone public. Then, calamity! It was gone again. Apparently some wily users figured out how to access the Commodore 64 BASIC system that was originally packaged with the emulator — something that Apple wasn't too happy with, given the nature of the interpreter's code. By setting the keyboard to 'always on', launching a game and restarting BASIC, players got into the 'empty shell' of their C64 emulator."

T-Mobile and Orange plan to merge their UK businesses, creating a mobile phone giant with 28.4 million customers. If completed, a deal between Deutsche Telekom's T-Mobile and Orange owner France Telecom would see a firm with sales of €9.4 B (Ł7.0 B, $13.4 B). It would be the UK's largest provider, overtaking Telefonica's O2, with about 37% of the mobile market. ... However, it is likely that competition authorities in the UK and EU will probe the deal.

Oh for god's sake tomorrow, just happen already. As if prior case leaks and Apple's heavy-handed messaging weren't enough, Best Buy's gone and listed a batch of new Belkin cases for the 3rd-gen iPod Touch and 5th-gen Nano.
Unfortunately there aren't any pictures, but we can surmise two things from this. First, there will almost definitely be new iPods of both varieties tomorrow. This is possibly the worst-kept secret, ever.
Second, these iPods will be sufficiently different from prior models such that they require different cases. I mean, accessory makers will take any excuse to make a new line of accessories, but neither the Nano or the Touch are due for any massive structural changes, so the most obvious reason for new shells would be holes for a camera and mic. At any rate, we'll be at the event tomorrow—I just hope there's something left to announce by then.

Apple boss Steve Jobs has made his first public appearance after almost a year of cancer treatment, at a product launch in San Francisco.
Mr Jobs' last major public appearance was in October 2008, unveiling a new MacBook, since when he has been absent because of ill health.
Earlier this year, Mr Jobs had a liver transplant in a Tennessee hospital.
Apple is thought to be ready to update its range of iPods, amid speculation over the future of the iPod Classic.
Mr Jobs won a standing ovation as he walked on stage, after which he thanked the young man who donated his liver, and urged the audience all to become organ donors.
But it was not long before the notoriously private Mr Jobs got down to business, saying that the iTunes Store was now the number one global music retailer and that ringtones would soon be available for download.
There was also news of an upgrade for the iPhone operating system, with the firm claiming to have sold over 30 million handsets.
Mr Jobs attributed its success to the Apple App Store which, he said, now has more than 75,000 applications.

As well-documented by the "word on the street," the fifth generation iPod nano is also a camera...and a bunch of other stuff too...and it's available today. Details:
• Video camera (640x480)
• Integrated mic
• Integrated speaker
• FM Radio!!!!!
• One-click YouTube uploads
• Voice Over like Shuffle
• Pedometer with Nike+ syncing online
• Voice Recorder
• 2.2-inch screen is possibly larger than last model
Starting today, the 8GB nano will cost $150 while the 16GB comes in at $180. (So why buy the 16?) So what's the biggest surprise here? The camera we knew about. But the radio? The video support? I do have to admit, if it's this or a Flip, the nano is certainly more tempting.

As expected, the iPod touch third generation is here. It comes in 16, 32, and 64 GB—for $199, $299, and $399. The new 32 and 64GB version has a faster processor, 50% faster. Just like the iPhone 3GS. Also like the iPhone 3GS, the graphics processor in the new iPod touch has OpenGL ES 2.0 capability. No wonder they are pushing so much on the gaming front.
No sight of the rumored camera. A lot of case manufacturers are going to spend a lot of time fixing holes.

Yeah, so all those reports about a new scheme to "stimulate sales of CD-length music" were true, and then some: On top of extras with for albums and movies, iTunes 9 comes with media sharing (!) and iPhone app management.
Here's what's new in the most significant upgrade to iTunes in years:
iTunes LPs: These are effectively like bonus CDs for digital albums. Each one comes with only get if you plunk down nearly $20 on the whole album. Along with that, you get video content—in most cases, live concert recordings—as well as photo albums and lyrics, which serve as sort of modern-day liner notes, I guess? The description also mentions even more tracks, none of which are listed, downloadable or not, in the normal iTunes panel. So, it's sort of like buying one of those loaded-up "Digipack" CDs people used to release, except on iTunes. Many albums come with a special display mode, so all this fancy new content isn't just dump into iTunes' regular audio and video browsers.
iTunes Extra: Like iTunes LPs for films, this gives you a downloadable equivalent of DVD extras, with interviews, extra clips and photo galleries. Some of the extras, like the ones for Wall-E shown here, are a little more interactive, and have their own full interface.
A New Store: As for the store itself, all content is now organized in a new iTunes interface, which looks a lot more like a software interface, and less like a heavily-formatted webpage. For example, you can now quick-view albums, which opens a Preview-style windows that lets you see what's behind a given link in the store, and there's an ever-present menu bar that lives up top, replacing the cumbersome breadcrumb navigation that was there before.
Media Sharing: The software's getting some pretty fantastic new functionality outside the store as well—we've got media sharing, at least on your local network: You can copy songs, movies, and TV shows to up to 5 authorized computers, or simply stream them. This is pretty huge, and a definite about-face for Apple, who's been stripping out sharing functionality from iTunes for a while.
An App Manager: On the iPhone/iPod front, now you can rearrange and manage apps from iTunes, which was one of those stupid-simple feature upgrades people (and by people, I mean we) have been clamoring for for months. Apple's version of the app manager is more well thought out than the concepts we've seen before, which were already droolworthy. Apps can be dragged and dropped, either alone or in groups, and selectively synced. Awesome.
Syncing, Genius and Social Networking: A few odds and ends here—iTunes 9 also brings finer sync controls, including options to sync genres or artists, instead of just playlists. New "Genius Playlists," which are just general library mixes that iTunes thinks you'll like, rathers that the old Genius playlists, which were based on a particular artist.
To put this another way, iTunes, did you just get good?
iTunes 9 Gallery
iTunes 9 is available today, as is plenty of iTunes LP and Extra content. For more, stay tuned to our liveblog.

Apple sure took long enough to get to this, but just as rumored, the iPod nano is seeing a hotly-anticipated refresh today. The big addition? A camera that just so happens to shoot live video. On the lower left of the new fifth-generation nano, you'll find the camera as well as a speaker and microphone, but unfortunately you'll have to sync it with your computer before you upload clips to YouTube. The camera-laden nanos will be available starting today in a rainbow's worth of hues (nine, if we're being precise), with the 8GB model pegged at $149 and the 16GB edition at $179. Oh, and oddly / tragically enough, the iPod nano is officially the only dedicated iPod with a camera, leaving the iPod touch -- and every human on the planet -- scratching their head in befuddlement.
As for other specs, you'll find a built-in FM tuner with Live Pause (!) and iTunes Tagging, a pedometer (you know, for that fancy Nike+ integration), VoiceOver, support for voice memos and a larger 2.2-inch display (up from 2.0-inches) with a 376 x 240 resolution. As for the camera, we're told that the video capture mode snags footage in VGA quality (640 x 480) H.264, with up to 30fps and AAC audio. If you're feeling fancy, there's also 15 real-time special effects including Sepia, Black and White, X-Ray, Film Grain, Thermal, Security Cam, Cyborg, Bulge, Kaleido and Motion Blur (among others). As for dimensions, the 5G nano remains identical to the 4G nano at 3.6- x 1.5- x 0.24-inches, though it somehow shaves a whopping 0.02 ounces as it climbs down from 1.3 to 1.28 ounces. Curious about battery life? Apple claims that the new nano can last up to 24 hours when playing back audio (same as 4G nano), while video playback should zap the rechargeable battery in just five hours (which is up an hour over its predecessor).

Buying experience for DS and PSP is poor says marketing boss
The competition between iPhone, PSP and DS is hotting up - Apple used its iPod showcase event today to highlight its position in comparison to other handheld games platforms.
Specifically, the firm moved to crticise the buying experience for the DS and PSP in comparison to the iPhone and iPod Touch.
"When [DS and PSP] came out, they seemed so cool. But once you play a game on the iPod touch, you think 'hey, these things aren't so cool any more..." said Apple's marketing VP Phil Schiller.
"We're talking about 25, 30, 40 dollars a title. The kids can't afford those titles. Worse isn't the price, it's the buying experience."
A demo slide at the event compared the quantity of games on the platforms: PSP's 607 games, DS' 3,680 and then iPod touch's 21,178, before kicking into a video montage of App Store games.

As well as claiming the lead over Nintendo and Sony in the handheld games race today, Apple also cut the prices of its iPod Touch devices, saying the move will drive App sales.
Calling the iPod Touch "the most affordable gateway to the App Store," Apple marketing VP Phil Schiller said that the device would now be at the 'magic price point' of $199 in the US.
That's for an 8GB model - there'll be a 32GB model for $299, and a new 64GB model for $399.
The two higher-price models will have faster processors and OpenGL ES 2.0m aking them "50 per cent faster at nearly everything you do" said Schiller. The move also brings the iPod Touch family into line with the iPhone 3GS.
He said that the firm "learned something really important a few years back in the iPod business" referring back to the iPod mini - its sales doubled when it dropped to $199.
Apple is expecting the same to happen with the the device now it is cheaper - and that this in turn will drive sales of apps, including games, on its App Store.

Steve Jobs has stated in the clearest terms yet that Apple is to market its iPod Touch as a dedicated games device – and considering how the company has so successfully dominated the MP3 and mobile phone markets, the news will surely be met with concern at both Nintendo and Sony.
Jobs also confessed that last night’s price drop for the device positions it directly at the mass-market – a sector that to date Nintendo has courted with great success.
“Originally, we weren't exactly sure how to market the Touch,” Jobs told The New York Times. “Was it an iPhone without the phone? Was it a pocket computer? What happened was, what customers told us was, they started to see it as a game machine.
“We started to market it that way, and it just took off. And now what we really see is it's the lowest-cost way to the App Store, and that's the big draw.
"So what we were focused on is just reducing the price to $199. We don’t need to add new stuff. We need to get the price down where everyone can afford it.”

I've got a playlist that never fails to make my heart go boom-baboom-baboom just a bit faster. According to a study from the University of Belgrade, 12 minutes of that playlist a day might actually leave me healthier and happier.
Over the course of a seven year study, Dr Predrag Mitrovic of the University of Belgrade looked at the effects of music therapy on the heart. Turns out that happy, joyful music (what qualifies for that is a matter of opinion) might have health benefits due to "decreasing sympathetic nervous activity."
Basically a cheery song or two a day might not keep the doctor away, but it's got some pleasant effects:
Patients who listened to music had less anxiety, although the score did not reach statistical significance, and statistically significant reductions in systolic and diastolic blood pressures and heart rate. Patients who listened to music also had significantly less angina, less heart failure, and lower rates of reinfarction, sudden death, and revascularization.
In plain words? Your "happy songs" will leave you calmer and less stressed. Not novel, but it's nice to have some science backing it. So rock, rock your little hearts out and spread the health by sharing your happy playlists.

Palm's App Catalog isn't exactly bursting with titles yet, but that isn't stopping the company from rejecting apps -- and the dubious honor of First App Rejected goes to NaNplayer, a music player app. Apparently NaNPlayer made use of an undocumented webOS API call, so it makes sense that Palm wouldn't approve it, but there's a somewhat less-sensible flipside: it was using the same API the built-in music player uses to index files so it could make playlists. That's pretty basic functionality, so we're hoping this all gets resolved with a future webOS update -- and in the meantime, NaNplayer will be released to the burgeoning Pre homebrew community when it's complete.

Wondering why Apple chose to add a camera to the iPod nano, but not the revised iPod touch? You're not alone, but one Mr. Steven P. Jobs has an answer for you: it's because the touch is a game machine, you see. Seriously -- that's what El Steve told the inimitable David Pogue today after the Rock and Roll event. According to Steve, Apple wasn't "exactly sure how to market the touch" at first, but once they listened to their customers and started to focus on gaming, "it just took off." That certainly explains the "funnest iPod ever" tagline, but still, why no cam? "We don't need to add new stuff -- we need to get the price down to where everyone can afford it." And... that's all he said about it, and Poguey didn't pursue the blindingly obvious followup: that's great for the $199 8GB model, but does Apple really think customers paying $299 and $399 for the larger editions would be turned off by paying slightly more for a camera sensor? Something tell us we won't hear Jobs say one more word about it until he's ready to actually unveil a touch with a camera -- at which point it will be a revolution.
P.S.- Make sure to hit the read link for the full interview -- it's short, but it's full of Steve saying things like "You notice Amazon never says how [many Kindles] they sell; usually if they sell a lot of something, you want to tell everybody."

Every highly-polished stainless steel lining has a cloud, it seems, and today's music player overhaul by Apple has been no different. Amidst all the excitement about moderate improvements and video cameras, we've also had to say goodbye to an old friend. Having been kept around for six months after the release of its successor, the second gen shuffle has finally succumbed, leaving the newly colorful 3G option all on its lonesome in the minimalist music lover space. Ah well, if you really have your heart set on the old rocker, refurb models are still available at Apple's online store, though probably not for long.

As of this morning iPhone 3GS owners can no longer restore to firmwares 3.0 or 3.0.1. This is due to the fact that Apple has stopped signing these files and if you try and restore using one you'll get an error. So this means you should be very very careful until 3.1 is jailbroken because if you mess up your phone... you can only go up to 3.1 as of now. Additionally if you do not have your IBSS and IBEC signatures and you restore, you may never be able to jailbreak again.
iPhone 3G and first generation owners should still be able to restore with no problems.

Many Apple fans like myself love the cool games available for the iPhone and iPod.
To a considerable degree, the gaming experience for the Apple product line can hold its own with the lineup available for any competing portable video game handheld maker - even the PSP, in my estimation. In addition to cost effectiveness and appearance, the outright game play for many titles just feels better on my iPhone. And it's impossible to place a value on the convenience factor of "game readiness."
But as analyst Jeff Bakalar pointed out following last night's Apple event, there's still something missing from the iPhone and iPod gaming experience. And it's hard to put your finger on exactly what it is.

Apple has cut the price for iPod touch owners to update their devices' software from version 2.x to 3.x. It now costs $4.95 rather than the previous price of $9.95.
That means iPod touch users who hadn't already upgraded their device to the iPhone 3.0 software will be able to pay the cheaper price to go straight to iPhone 3.1. The upgrade from 3.0 to 3.1 remains free.
Does this really matter? In a word, yes. Earlier this year, Apple faced criticism over its policy of charging iPod touch owners nearly $10 to get the latest software, when the update was free for iPhone owners.
In June, mobile advertising firm AdMob revealed that just 1% of the iPod touch users accessing its ad network had upgraded to the 3.0 software, compared to 44% of iPhone users.
With 20 million iPod touches having been sold, it's in Apple's interests - not to mention app developers' - to get as many of them to upgrade to the latest software as possible. Hence, presumably, this new price cut.

Apparently it was all in good fun, but word is that while whooping up the crowd at Microsoft's company meeting in Seattle this week, Ballmer spotted a Windows staffer snapping his pic with…an iPhone. You know where this is going...
He grabbed it from the employee, made some funny remarks, and held it up as the crowd booed. (You can see the shot taken by the actual iPhone in question at this point). Ballmer then pretended to stomp on it and walked away, with everything being shown on the big screen behind him.
"He is not one of us, kill him!" (OK, I made that part up).
Ballmer also jokingly teased the poor employee during his speech afterward, something I'm sure they won't forget.
What have we learned? Well, Steve Ballmer actually has a sense of humor. And whatever you do, hide your freakin' iPhone when the Ballmer-nator is near. As a Microsoft staffer said on Twitter: "You just don't pick up the CEO of Chevy in a BMW.

September 11th, 2009, 17:33 Posted By: wraggster

In a New York Times interview of Steve Jobs conducted by Engadget columnist aspirant David Pogue, Apple's CEO suggested that the company did not include a camera on the iPod touch because the company was now marketing the iPod touch as a game machine and that a camera was not germane to such a device. "We don't need to add new stuff," said Jobs.
But why is adding a digital camera any less germane to the portable game device of the iPod touch than it is to adding it to the media player of the iPod nano? Or, if price is an issue, why not exclude it only on the entry-level model? The iPod touch market will soon be large enough to support such diversity. And if the iPod touch is indeed being marketed as a gaming console and a low-cost point of entry to the app store, excluding a camera disrupts the continuity of the touch/iPhone platform, while the iPod imaging message is now more muddled: If you're buying the iPhone 3G, you can capture stills but not video, while the "lower-end" iPod nano offers video capture but not stills, the iPod touch offers neither, and only the iPhone 3GS offers both.
Since the iPod's introduction, a few media players with integrated cameras have entered (and failed) in the marketplace: the Archos camcorder and Olympus m:Robe. While the camcorder-enabled iPod nano will surely sell orders of magnitude more than those products did, the video camera feels no less tacked on. Quite to the contrary when it comes to portable gaming, Nintendo, the longstanding market share leader in handheld games, added a camera to its DSi, and a rear-facing one at that.
To be fair, an iPod nano with embedded camcorder does enable Apple to market a Flip competitor that is significantly smaller than the Flip mino, with a screen size closer to even bulkier competitors such as the Kodak Zi8 -- although it lacks HD video capture. The candybar camcorder market has been small by iPod standards, but it continues to attract more competitors -- Samsung, for example, recently launched the HMX-U10.
The Jobs interview does offer a potential clue to what was perhaps a more pressing concern in integrating a camera into the touch. Explaining why the nano was limited to recording video and not stills, Jobs mentioned that adding both would have made the nano a significantly thicker device; Apple has consistently pointed with pride at the thinness of its mobile and portable devices.
Particularly with the thin Zune HD (and its OLED screen) entering the fray, Apple is likely loathe to bulk up the incredibly slim iPod touch. I suspect that the protests of users will eventually change Apple's mind; even FM radio has made it into the iPod after all this time. But for the next year, at least, iPod touch users may be condemned to carry a separate digital camera and endure burdens such as optical zoom, image stabilization, and vastly better image quality.

One of the new iPod nano features that Apple didn't bother to illustrate much yesterday is the integrated pedometer, and if an updated Nike+ iPod user guide is to be believed, that ain't the only fitness-related extra that the 5G nano will be good for. As the image above so clearly shows, a Nike+ compatible heart rate monitor could be on the way, and it'll function exclusively with Cupertino's only camera-toting iPod. AppleInsider was told that the product launch was actually scheduled for yesterday, but it was held up for reasons unknown and may not ship until 3058. Too bad -- we just know that you were waiting for this very device to start your workout regimen. Ah well, what's another dozen months of kicking back and ingesting Ho Hos, right?

We still don't know what it looks like or when exactly it'll arrive -- rough estimate sometime in 2010 -- but Windows Mobile 7's being given special care by Microsoft with a chassis concept of "carefully defined hardware specifications" for hardware vendors, according to James McCarthy. As for what those specs are and how strictly it'll enforce adherence, we're still in the dark. If it's anything like what we saw with the rumored "Pink" specs from back in May, we're not too worried, but it's really in Microsoft's hands to screw up. If they say it's okay to see StrongARM chips in WinMo 7 devices, someone'll do it, and we gotta imagine some negative vibes towards the mobile OS in general should someone ever have to manage with a handset like that.

Well, how about that -- Palm Developer Community Manager Chuq Von Rospach has taken the time to respond to earlier reports of NaNplayer's rejection from the App Catalog, and he's surprisingly cool about it. As we'd heard, the underlying issue is that NaNplayer uses private APIs that will change in a future version of webOS, so Palm doesn't want apps built on them. That's understandable, but here's where Palm's doing it right: Chuq says that Palm is happy for NaNplayer "to continue life as a homebrew application until we get to the point where we can release public, supportable APIs for the functionality that it requires." That's the sort of hacker-friendly compromise we can get behind -- anyone in Cupertino taking notes?

Noticing a "Policy Requirement" error when trying to use your Microsoft Exchange account after upgrading to OS 3.1? Then there's a good chance you're not using an iPhone 3GS, as Apple has just confirmed via a support page that the upgrade can now enforce the Exchange ActiveSync mailbox policy requiring encryption on the device, which just so happens to only be supported by the 3GS (guess that "S" stands for more than just speed). Not surprisingly, the only solution for non-3GS users is to contact their Exchange Server administrator and hope that they're willing to change the policy to no longer require device encryption.

[Linux4Nano] over at the [Gna! repositories] have just finalized a breakthrough for their bootloader project. Because the iPod Nano 2G has a hardware encryption chip, it could previously not be flashed with a custom firmware. By digging around in some assembly code (and working their magic) the team was able to get Linux onto the 2G, develop drivers for its peripherals (screen, clickwheel and serial interface are a few), and put all of that code into a package convenient to install by the end user. If you’ve ever considered installing uClinux (the ported distro) on your Nano, the [Linux4Nano] team have made the iLoader an easy place to start.

There's no denying that Apple let the entire world (yes, even the native Easter Islanders) down by not shoving a camera of some sort into its iPod touch, but if a delicate teardown completed by the screwdriver-wielding fiends over at iFixit is any indication, a seasoned modder could certainly add one. A 6- x 6- x 3-millimeter space was spotted between a Broadcom chip and the wireless antenna, which is reportedly not enough room for an iPhone-esque sensor, but just enough space for the video camera module found in the 5G iPod nano. In potentially more interesting news, the aforesaid Broadcom BCM4329 chip actually supports 802.11n. For the nerds in attendance, you'll recognize that even the iPhone 3GS can't handle those high-speed airwaves. Furthermore, the chip supports FM transmission, so at least theoretically, the device could stream tunes to your old school stereo through an open FM station. Eager for more?

iFixIt has discovered a Broadcom 802.11a/b/g/n chip in the just-announced iPod touch (32 GB and 64 GB) models that uses single-stream 802.11n. Single-stream doesn't get the full power of N, but it boosts speed enough that — along with space-time block encoding, a feature coming soon to Wi-Fi access points with two or more radios — the iPod touch could be an effective networked media server, for streaming and transfer, possibly through the new iTunes Home Sharing feature

It's been quite a while since Apple released the OS 3.1 for iPhone and there's been a lot of confusion regarding it's Jailbreak Status etc. Therefore, here's a summary of do's and dont's
According to ChronicDev, that the 3.1 GM seed is still vulnerable.
It has been confirmed by MuscleNerd from DevTeam that iTunes 9 doesn't interfere with jailbreaking so you can update iTunes but make sure that you do not update your device firmware to 3.1 yet if you want to jailbreak.
Saurik confirms once you update to 3.1, there's no way to downgrade to an earlier version as iTunes no longer signs the older firmware. Therefore, if you do not have your ECID information saved, you're completely stuck! For those who have the information saved, there should be a solution out soon
The new firmware also includes a new baseband which means none of the current unlocking tools

A mysterious discovery has been unearthed inside the new iPod Touch.
According to the San Franciso Chronicle, a Broadcom Wi-Fi chip was discovered during the dissection of the new 32GB iPod Touch by the makers of iFixit, a Web site founded six years ago to help people "tinker with their electronics."
The full list of discoveries was chronicled earlier in our forums.

Apple added an anti-phishing feature to Safari in the 3.1 release. Called Fraud Warning (it's in Settings->Safari->Security), the modification was released with little fanfare (or explanation), and it appears that there may be confusion about how it works.
Computerworld reported on two anti-malware researchers who had taken a look at users who had implemented the feature and found it gave inconsistent results with known malicious sites. On Wednesday, Michael Sutton, the vice president of security research at Zscaler told Computerworld "[i]t was blocking nothing." On Thursday, he said, "it started blocking some sites, for some users, but it was inconsistent. Some sites are being blocked, others are not."

Summeli is also working on porting the Playstation emulator PSX4all to the Symbian range of phones, heres his announcment:
I’m currently porting gpSP to the Symbian. Psx4all uses pretty much same SDL stuff and same ARM assembly emitter as gpSP. I just took my porting tricks from gpSP and compiled them with psx4all and here is the result. It’s really not fully optimized yet, but you’ll get the idea that it’s not going to run on N95 smoothly I still have some other tricks that would speed it up, but not enough.
It’s just a proof of concept that this emu could be ported to Symbian with moderate effort, but it’s going to require a lot faster CPU. I might take a second look of this after I’ll get the gpSP port finished.
See the performance by yourself.

The newest iPhone 3.1 update intentionally removed tethering functionality from all phones operating in networks that are not Apple partners. This is not limited to hacked or jailbroken phones, but also includes expensive "officially supported" factory unlocked phones. To make the problem worse Apple has made it impossible to downgrade back to working 3.0 version for iPhone 3GS phones

We know that Palm's hard at work implementing desperately needed payment infrastructure for its App Catalog, and we might now be getting some of the first glances of what it -- and the non-beta App Catalog as a whole -- will look like. Major new features include the aforementioned support for credit card payments, some sort of tag cloud that appears to show up when searching, and integrated app management, while many other screens have been gently tweaked from the early release Pre owners are using today. Last we'd heard, Palm had been targeting mid-September for e-commerce to make its grand debut, which is like... now, so we're thinking we won't be waiting long to see this out and about.

Just submitted to Apple as a bug, rpetrich (developer of the ActionMenu packages in Cydia) discovered an interesting security bug in the iPhone firmware.
If a password is inputted in a field, shake to undo, and you will be able to see the character you are deleting. Simply repeat this for every character, and you have the password.
Obviously this isn't an issue that would be useful for those with a criminal bent, as you'd have to be within grabbing distance of someone who input their password, DIDN'T navigate off the page, and then left their iPhone... but a security bug none-the-less. EDIT: rpetrich lets us know, this also works in any apps that save passwords (such as most Twitter apps) - making this bug much more severe.
EDIT AGAIN: This seems to have been fixed in FW 3.1. Which is NOT a good enough reason to upgrade yet, heh

Recombu.com has pitted the iPod Nano's video capabilities against an iPhone 3GS, a Nokia 5530 XpressMusic and Flip Mino HD. This simple test shows how the camera deals with motion, colour and audio. The iPod Nano's camera seems to offer a basic yet decent video experience and some might say delivers a higher picture quality than the iPhone 3GS's camera. What's interesting is how well it deals with close-ups.

Novell has announced MonoTouch 1.0, a commercial SDK that allows developers to build iPhone apps using Microsoft's .Net Framework instead of the Apple-designated C or Objective-C languages. The SDK leverages Novell's Mono runtime for running Windows apps on non-Windows systems, allowing developers to utilize code and libraries written for .Net and programming languages like C#. With MonoTouch, the Mono runtime provides such developer services as garbage collection, thread management, type safety, and Web services, said Mono leader Miguel de Icaza

Jay Freeman (saurik) has been a busy man lately. for the past two years. for a while now. His latest project to come our way was just released less than an hour ago - a way to finally downgrade your iPhone 3G[S] from 3.1 (with a few "well, if"s in there) to something currently jailbreakable (like 3.0.1).
saurik's got some crap to toss on Apple's wall, too, with this one. The guide article features not only an informative look into the methods of jailbreaking, and a history of Apple's push for individuality (and of course the instructions on how to downgrade your iPhone 3G[S}) - it goes so far as to offer up some tasty tidbits like "Congratualations, you just overthrew your orwellian overlord, and have taken back control of your device," and "Apple, as a company, has turned into a...

A new format is heading to shelves this Christmas that merges the likes of plug-and-play TV games, iPod functionality and motion sensitive gameplay.
The iGame Family, a TV games dock from UK IT service providers Elonex, will be available to retailers from September 21st and works as both an iPod dock and a games console.
Users can stream media such as music and videos from their iPod straight to the TV screen. Alternatively, with the touch of a button, it works as a standalone video games console, offering consumers a range of motion sensitive sports and mini-games.
Elonex’s head of strategic relationships Simon Le Jeune told MCV the company predicts the iGame Family will be a hit this Christmas.
“Our expectations are professionally and realistically based on our own research,” he said.
“Early indications are that we have excellent prospects of a great success. Our initial sales are giving us cause for concern about meeting demand before Christmas hits.”
Le Jeune said the product will grant games retailers access to the iPod peripherals revenue stream typically dominated by general entertainment and music retailers, thanks to the dock’s gaming functionality.
“When price, margin and spend are under increased pressure, it offers retailers an unexpected profit opportunity for substantial incremental sales this Christmas and thereafter of hardware and software,” he explained.
“It gives retailers an excellent opportunity to take revenue and profits from other industries by having a fresh offering for those consumers who find that current hardware and games prices are still out of reach.”

TechCrunch has an article about a startup called iMo, which aims to enable control of any PC game using an iPhone or iPod Touch. The idea is to reduce the need for gaming peripherals while you're on the move, and make motion-control available to more players. Quoting:
"The system also features onscreen controls for the iPhone and iPod Touch, as not every PC game will benefit from using things like the accelerometer, obviously. This all works via both Bluetooth and WiFi connections between your device and your computer. The plan is to offer iMo in the App Store for $0.99; the first version should be available new in the App Store. And long-term, the company hopes to make it available on other mobile platforms as well, including Android. And ultimately, they'd love to include support for gaming consoles as well, like the aforementioned Wii, the PS3, and the Xbox 360."

The new generation of the iPod touch, we've been told, is roughly 50 percent faster than the previous iteration. Well, the fine folks over at the iPhone Blog have done a bit of information collecting on just that topic -- to see if Apple's latest is actually that much faster. Both Macworld and TUAW did testing which showed a reduction in boot times from 31 to 19 seconds, web page loading (using the New York Times) went from 34 to 15 seconds, while app launching saw time reductions across the board. So -- in essence -- yes, the newest iPod touch is about 50 percent faster than the previous model in terms of performance. Hit the read link to hear even more tantalizing details.

September 16th, 2009, 19:22 Posted By: wraggster
While the iPhone is offering new opportunities to developers, allowing freedom of creativity and the ability to build games using small teams, those opportunities are being widely abused with the release of poor games, Frontier founder David Braben has said.
Speaking at BAFTA event A Life in Videogames, organised by GamesIndustry.biz, Braben praised the iPhone format for enabling developers to be creative and test out ideas without having to first sell them to a publisher.
But this opportunity gets abused, he pointed out, comparing the current situation with iPhone games to his experiences in the Eighties.
"We saw this in the eighties, we saw a lot of games that were just plain rubbish and they were relying on fancy packaging or whatever to be sold. The beauty with the iPhone is that often the games are often very quick impulse buys because they're so cheap."
The problem is that the good games are being diluted by the poor, said Braben. A problem which is more prevalent on iPhone than through avenues such as WiiWare because the cost of development kits for the latter acts as a filter.
"Now I think there are also a lot of games on these formats that are a bit poor, which is a shame, not so much WiiWare but particularly iPhone, because it's so easy. They see big numbers for other games and think 'I'll have some of that'. But the sad thing is that it dilutes some of the good games."
Some iPhone games are "genius", he continued, but there are also those that are the complete opposite. What the iPhone offers to developers is the chance to create games on a different scale to epic console projects, he said.
He compares the format to YouTube - "It's like comparing a TV programme to an epic film, and below that perhaps YouTube which would compare with some iPhone games. I think there's a place for all of them... It's lovely to see a lot of the home grown stuff that crops up on YouTube. But YouTube is a different thing to the other opportunities that are around."
In advice to students on which of the current formats they should choose to develop on, Braben suggests they think carefully about what they want to achieve.
"Do you want to make money or do you want to work with brand new platforms or do you want to see your name in lights?"
The obvious first choice might be iPhone, he said. "At least with iPhone your name will be up there. But it's so crowded now the chances of getting anywhere are very very small."
These days, with game development team sizes often exceeding 100 people, formats such as iPhone and WiiWare offer a different route to market for developers, said the veteran programmer. However, "the art in some ways is staying small," he added. "A company - you've got salaries and things."

News from Summeli:
Symbian phones are really slow compared to Linux based devices like gp2x etc. You really don’t get even near to the same performance (in frames per second) with Symbian phone compared to an open Linux device with similar ARM processor.
Here’s couple of reason’s affecting my emulator ports.
1. No direct access to the frame buffer
Symbian doesn’t provide direct access to the frame buffer. The CDirectScreenAccess API is far from direct. All data goes through window server, so there’s cycles consumed in the sceduling (few context changes etc) and in the memcopy operations made by the Window Server. I’m assuming that the Window Server makes a transformation of the data passed to it via CDirectScreenAccess. This all makes the basic blit operation really slow in Symbian.
I’m hoping that the Qt will provide faster access to the the frame buffer, which could provide significant speed increase to my emulators.
2. Memory mapping and dynarec
The memory mapping affects only gpsp-emulator, but it affects to it heavily. I have to use the memory trampoline pattern to get the dynamic recompilation working in Symbian. This affects all the dynarec emulators a lot. I’m quite sure that psx4symbian would be possible with OMAP3 based devices, if Symbian memory mapping could be modified.
I don’t think that Symbian is going to change their memory mapping just to get dynarec emulator to run faster. However I’m quite sure that this also slows down all self-modifiyingcode which is being run in the Symbian OS, so there might be a little hope. At least I could add an idea about modifying the memory mapping into the Symbian Foundation’s idea database.

After new price cuts announced last week, Apple's iPhone and iPod Touch are closer to taking down the likes of Nintendo's DS and Sony's PSP handhelds. But are the iPhone and iPod Touch really "DS killers"?
Before Apple ( AAPL - news - people ) can join the videogame big leagues, it needs to deal with three major issues: the installed base, pricing model and consumer perception.
First, some context. At Apple's "Rock n' Roll" conference last week, Steve Jobs and Phil Schiller basically called out Nintendo ( NTDOY.PK - news - people ) and Sony ( SNE - news - people ) over their respective handhelds, billing the iPhone line as the "next level fun" in portable gaming. Apple showed some overly simplistic charts demonstrating that the App Store had 21,178 games, while the DS had only 3,680 and the PSP 607.
In an otherwise ho-hum conference, this smack talk sent the blogosphere into a tizzy, including a debate over whether Jobs "spun" The New York Times by explaining away the decision not to include a camera in the iPod Touch as a way to keep the cost down because Touch was a "game machine" and the "lowest-cost way to the App Store."
Now, let's look at where things stand.
Installed base: Schiller claims Apple has sold a total of 50 million iPhone and Touch units combined (30 million iPhones and 20 million Touches). Games are the most popular download on the App Store, with a recent comScore report noting that nearly one in three iPhone users have downloaded at least one game. IPhone users can access the App Store more regularly than iPod Touch users who are limited to a wi-fi connection. But if we do include iPod Touch users in the above figure, that means Apple has a videogame installed base of around 16.5 million.
Meanwhile, Nintendo has sold over 100 million DS units, with each user purchasing at least one game, a significantly higher installed base than Apple's. Even Sony has sold over 50 million PSP units.
To be sure, Apple has been doing extremely well with sales, reaching the 50 million mark in just two years since the launch of the first iPhone. The Nintendo DS took three years to reach that mark; Sony's PSP, around four years. Still, even if iPhones and Touches continue to sell well and the percentage of users downloading games from the App Store increases, Apple is still a few years off from having an installed base to rival that of its competitors here.
Pricing model: To produce the caliber of game titles available for the DS and PSP, developers and publishers will want more profit than they can currently get from selling a game through the App Store.
Jesse Divnich, director of analyst services at Electronic Entertainment Design and Research, says the average DS and PSP game that retails for $26 can bring in $13 in gross profits; the other $13 goes to markup, royalties and distribution. App Store games typically range from free to $10, with Apple taking a 30% cut of sales. Thus, even a high-end $10 title on the App Store will yield only $7 in gross profits to publishers, or a little more than half of what an average DS or PSP game would yield.
Making the App Store even less attractive to developers is the touted abundance of titles. For example, a new skateboarding game on the DS would have few, if any, competitors, while on the App Store, it might share "shelf space" with over a dozen other skateboarding games, of varying levels of quality.
Consumer perception: There is little debate over whether the DS and PSP are serious videogame platforms. There is a lot more debate over whether that is true of the iPhone and iPod Touch. And that consumer perception isn't something that will change overnight; rather, it often takes years for people to adjust their currently held views of a product.
So, Apple still has a lot of catching up to do before game publishers and players will view the iPhone as a major player in the industry. But how much catching up?
Divnich says that "a gaming platform needs to have an installed base greater than 20 million with an average gross profit of at least $9 per unit before any major publisher or developer can take it seriously."
On the other hand, there are areas where the iPhone and Touch are positioned to take the lead. Simon Jeffery, chief publishing officer for iPhone games developer Ngmoco, sees the iPhone as a platform on which social games will flourish, taking advantage of the device's connectivity and mobility. "Games like 'Farmville' and 'Mafia Wars' in the social gaming world are attracting hardcore gamers," Jeffrey says. "They're becoming engaged and find that while these games are more simplistic, they're actually pretty fun."
Thus, we might be seeing the start of disruption in the games industry, but for the disruption to really get going, both game publishers and consumers will have to adjust their expectations of the market. Yes, Apple's on the radar, but a serious contender? Maybe in a few years if the company is able to overcome its trio of obstacles.

Elonex's iGame Family is a TV dock for the iPhone/iPod Touch (and other iPod devices) that comes with six games and a remote inspired by Nintendo's Wii console. The games include tennis, bowling, ping pong, darts, "firecracker" and "trampoline." The dock also allows users to play their iPod's music and videos through the television.
Elonex is currently trying to recruit developers to create more titles for the console, which will then be sold at "official iGame retailers." We're currently checking with the company to see how much it plans to sell the device for and how integrated the wand is with non-iGame software.
Update: The company let us know the iGame Family will retail for Ł79 in the UK. Still working on the wand answer, international release plans and price.

It's pretty much as reliable as the sun: a new iPhone OS update generally leads to at least a handful of issues. But iPhone OS 3.1, which was made available on September 9th, seems worse than most. We've seen tip after tip pour in, and we've watched Apple's support forums grow increasingly ugly with irate iPhone users dealing with horrid battery life, random shut downs and the occasional screen freeze. A few of our own have also experienced some of these quirks, though others have escaped without a scratch. So, we're putting it to you all -- has the latest iPhone update borked your handset? If so, in what way?

[Tim] wanted to make some recordings of himself driving similar to those made by the dashboard cameras on police cars. In a simple two step hack (1. Measure, 2. Drill), he altered his iPhone windshield mount so that it didn’t block the lens of the camera. We will admit (sheepishly) that at first glance we thought this might be connected to the outside of the windshield but it’s not. Take a look at his drive to work after the break.

What's wrong with Nokia in the US? Why does a company with around 40 per cent of the market elsewhere in the world struggle so hopelessly in the home of capitalism?
The market analyst Frost & Sullivan has its ideas, which it outlined in an essay entitled 'What Nokia Should Do', penned by the firm's mobile and wireless VP J. Gerry Purdy.
He blamed Nokia's poor performance in the US market on design principles. he said:
"Nokia phones all use the same font on the display – the same font used in marketing literature. I don’t know why but the font is not attractive to many people in the US. It gives you an uncomfortable feel when you look at it without necessarily knowing why.
"The Symbian OS, while very good technically, has a user interface style that seems foreign to those in the US. Its core design principles have a look and feel that is different from the iPhone, BlackBerry, Palm WebOS and Android environments."
Purdy's article was then posted to the MoMo industry group, where it was picked apart by various MoMo members including Simon Rockman, the former Sony Ericsson and Moto man turned industry consultant.
He retorted: "Nokia is the only major handset manufacturer that doesn't drop its pants in price negotiations with the US carriers. That's the real story behind their market share. They keep their prices up in Europe because is there is consumer pull. The strategy fails in the US because the consumer has so little choice."
It's a fascinating debate on the cultural and economic differences between the US and Europe,

Apple's support forums are humming with reports of iPhones gone non-responsive after their owners upgraded to version 3.1 of the firmware, and users are growing increasingly restive at Apple's steadfast denial that any bug exists. When the error occurs, the iPhone isplay appears to be functional, but does not react to any input on the touch screen or external buttons, and needs a hard power cycle and reboot before it will work again. The problem - dubbed "Coma Mode" for the phone's complete lack of interactivity when it gets in this state - has been noted sometimes when the phone has been put to sleep, sometimes when it's locked, and sometimes at completely random moments.

Facing an avalanche of customer complaints about poor battery life in iPhones that are running the 3.1 firmware release, Apple Support has sent a selected group of users a profile enabling a power-logging mode, and has disseminated an 11-item questionnaire, including questions about email use as well as the frequency with which WiFi and Bluetooth are enabled.
The Battery Life Logging mode apparently writes to the user area of the phone's flash, as the test users are instructed not to sync for a few days while gathering data. They are also asked to disable the mode once the testing is complete, presumably to avoid flash overrun due to the growth of the log files.

The USB Implementers Forum has finally responded to Palm's complaints that Apple is violating its USB-IF Membership Agreement by preventing the Pre from syncing with iTunes. It's found in favor of Apple. Worse, it's accused Palm itself of violating the Membership Agreement by using Apple's Vendor ID number to disguise the Pre as an Apple device

Good news for Pre owners—Palm has literally been overwhelmed with app submissions on the heels of tomorrow's launch. As Palm Developer Community Manager Chuq Von Rospach notes, the approval process has got off to a rocky start:
We got more applications than we could handle well, which is a good problem to have. Unfortunately, it means we dropped some things on the floor, and that's bad, but with the impending "stuff" that's coming, this is all going to get a lot easier for everyone and a lot more transparent.
Despite these bumps in the road for developers, it does give consumers a reason to be excited about the apps that arrive tomorrow.

A product that exists only as a persistent rumor has already generated a lot of buzz, according to a new survey done by an international corporate and investment bank.
RBC Capital Markets talked to 3,100 people, and more than a fifth - or 20% - said they would be interested in the hypothetical Apple device, as reported by AppleInsider. By comparison, only 9 percent said they'd be interested in an iPhone when RBC conducted a similar survey a few months before its release in 2007. Remember that at that point more was known about the iPhone, which was an announced product, than is now known about the Apple tablet, which is imaginary. Also, the survey asked about a tablet in the $500 - $700 price range, which is quite a bit...

Market research firm Interpret recently made some discoveries about public perception of smartphones that should shock, surprise, and amaze you. The just released report, dubbed "Signature Smartphones: Gaining Mindshare in Order to Gain Market Share," reveals that despite being massively disadvantaged in the marketplace, Palm managed to nab a huge chunk of mindshare with the Pre -- in fact, the report suggests that the Pre is number two only to the iPhone 3GS in the metric. The study looks at the driving factors behind purchaser's decisions to buy a smartphone, narrowing down the list to three major components: belief that the phone is "smart," belief that the phone is "hip / cool," and belief that the phone will make them more productive. Rating a swath of phones (BlackBerry Curve and Storm, G1, iPhone), the report found that only the iPhone and Pre balanced the three factors in a way in which consumers felt the higher price tags were warranted. More to the point, only the Pre and the iPhone 3GS managed to strike that balance at all; offerings such as the two BlackBerrys were lopsided. There's not much more meat to the study, though it does shed some interesting light on just how Palm managed to squeeze its way back into the limelight (of course, it doesn't hurt to have a product that's actually kind of cool).

It might be about four months late, but the UK is finally getting its slice of the tasty new Palm pie. There'll be no shortage of outlets to buy this from, with the Carphone Warehouse, Phones4U and O2's online shop all stocked up, but the carrier options are limited to just one. You'll find tables of UK and Ireland pricing after the break, and you'll be happy to know that the Pre can be had for free on two-year contracts charging Ł34.26 per month, which come with "unlimited" mobile data and free access to the BT OpenZone WiFi service.

The goal is to find the Sphere, capture it and carry it to the upper part of the level. The main obstacle is the gravity, that impulses you towards the ground. But many other obstacles, canons, tanks, doors, etc. will try to make difficult your journey...

Microsoft boss Steve Ballmer has blasted the company's own mobile operating system at the firm's Venture Capital Summit. One tweet from an attendee claims Ballmer said the company had 'screwed up with Windows Mobile. Wishes they had already launched WM7. They completely revamped the team.' Another claims Ballmer said 'we've pumped in some new talent. This will not happen again.' It's not the first time Ballmer has attacked Windows Mobile, having publicly stated that version 6.5 was "not the full release we wanted".

Several readers sent in word that Google has served a Cease and Desist order to Cyanogen, one of the most prolific Android modders: his CyanogenMod is enjoyed by 30,000 users. The move is puzzling. Gizmodo wonders what Google's game is, and Lauren Weinstein calls the move "not of the high Googley' caliber" that one would expect of the company.

A new iPhone App, titled ZXGamer, emulates the classic geek antique the ZX Spectrum, and comes with three bundled games, allowing owners of Apple's device to experience the rudimentary pleasures of using the once cutting edge computer.
The arrival of ZXGamer will come as a surprise to many in the wake of Manomio's Commodore 64 emulator, named C64, which was removed from the App Store by Apple after just a few days on sale.
As reported by Pocketgamer, ZXGamer is receiving less than favourable reviews from the public using iTunes, but does show that Apple is still prepared to allow emulators to be released for its industry-changing platform.
Imitating the workings of the 48K version of the iconic Clive Sinclair creation, ZXGamer features a limited selection of touch screen buttons for basic controls, and implements some motion sensitive controls. As of today, the App os only available for 3GD iPhones.

Apple’s iPhone has, for the first time, hit first place in Superbrands’ annual list of the 500 coolest brands in the UK.
The hugely popular smartphone managed to knock Aston Martin off the top spot for the first time in three years, switching first and second place with the British sportscar manufacturer.
Apple’s dominance of the CoolBrands 500 continued beyond first place, as the Apple brand itself emerged once again in third place, while the iPod brand jumped 36 places to hit fourth.
The list of 500 cool brands is brought together by independent research from The Centre for Brand Analysis, surveying what the group terms as ‘influential opinion formers’, as well as the British public. The CoolBrands survey reached out to 2,500 respondents, and has been annually measuring brand trends since 2001.
Technology companies continue to dominate the CoolBrands list, as nine of the top ten remain technology or internet brands. BBC’s iPlayer, meanwhile, has entered the list for the first time in twentieth place.
Stephen Cheliotis, Chairman of the CoolBrands council, refuted the seemingly flippant nature of a cool-list.
“Aston Martin has finally lost its top spot in the rankings but only just,” he said. “In fact, considering cool is seen to be very fluid and changeable, the top twenty shows remarkable consistency with 15 of last year’s top twenty in there again.
“Equally, most of the category winners are the same,” he said. “So much for cool being a fleeting thing.”
Meanwhile in the console race, Nintendo climbed to fifth place; the company’s highest position yet, while PlayStation leapfrogged the Xbox brand, with both hitting tenth and eleventh place respectively.
1. iPhone (up one place)
2. Aston Martin (down one)
3. Apple (same position)
4. iPod (up 36 places)
5. Nintendo (up two places)
6. YouTube (down one place)
7. BlackBerry (up 16 places)
8. Google (down two places)
9. Bang & Olufsen (down five places)
10. PlayStation (up five places)
11. Xbox (up 28)
12. Tate Modern (down two)
13. Dom Perignon (down two places)
14. Virgin Atlantic (down two places)
15. Ferrari (down two places)
16. Sony (same position)
17. Mini (up 11 places)
18. Vivienne Westwood (up 23 places)
19. Rolex (down ten places)
20. BBC iPlayer (New entry)

UK mobile phone carrier Orange has announced that it will be offering Apple's iPhone on its network later this year, confirming a much-rumoured expansion from the handset's current exclusive O2 contract.
The move will open up opportunities for App Store developers to a much wider audience what will be seen as a key demographic market for casual spending, and follows a recent announcement by the carrier that it is to merge with the UK T-Mobile business to form the biggest network in the country.
Orange was estimated to have had around a 21 per cent market share at the end of 2008, while the link-up with T-Mobile UK will boost that figure to nearer 40 per cent. Adding that to the existing O2 user base will give the iPhone nearly 75 per cent of the UK's total mobile market to hook into.
The App Store has seen a whole new sector of the videogames industry rise up in the past year, with individual successes leading to what some industry figures have labelled a "gold rush" as developers hope to cash in on the growing handset audience and streamlined route to market.

Wow. Apparently the App Store is as popular as McDonald's as it's now topped 2 billion iPhone/iPod touch application downloads. Apple adopting the mantra "billions and billions served" seems just months away.
Apple's App Store Downloads Top Two Billion
More Than 85,000 Apps Now Available for iPhone & iPod touch
CUPERTINO, Calif., Sept. 28 /PRNewswire-FirstCall/ — Apple® today announced that more than two billion apps have been downloaded from its revolutionary App Store, the largest applications store in the world. There are now more than 85,000 apps available to the more than 50 million iPhone(TM) and iPod touch® customers worldwide and over 125,000 developers in Apple's iPhone Developer Program.
"The rate of App Store downloads continues to accelerate with users downloading a staggering two billion apps in just over a year, including more than half a billion apps this quarter alone," said Steve Jobs, Apple's CEO. "The App Store has reinvented what you can do with a mobile handheld device, and our users are clearly loving it."
Today, iPhone and iPod touch customers in 77 countries worldwide can choose from an incredible range of apps in 20 categories, including games, business, news, sports, health, reference and travel. With the recently introduced iTunes® 9, it's now easier than ever to organize and sync your apps right in iTunes and they will automatically appear on your iPhone or iPod touch with the same layout.
Apple ignited the personal computer revolution in the 1970s with the Apple II and reinvented the personal computer in the 1980s with the Macintosh. Today, Apple continues to lead the industry in innovation with its award-winning computers, OS X operating system and iLife and professional applications. Apple is also spearheading the digital media revolution with its iPod portable music and video players and iTunes online store, and has entered the mobile phone market with its revolutionary iPhone.
