When Microsoft announced earlier this year that it will launch an own-brand tablet to compete directly with its various vendor partners working on Windows 8-based tablet PCs of their own, there was some backlash. Privately — and sometimes even publicly — long-time Microsoft partners took it as an attack on their businesses and questioned why Microsoft would be so brazen. But with nowhere else to turn thanks to Windows' overwhelming PC dominance, these vendors had no choice but to continue developing Windows 8 devices and compete directly with their software supplier. Though events may play out a bit differently in the smartphone market, where Microsoft has yet to stage the comeback it promised two years ago, BGR has learned that the Redmond, Washington-based company plans to release its own Windows Phone 8 smartphone in the coming months."

Company uses colour as a USP, but this new ad attacking Apple just comes off as desperate.
In a new ad, Nokia is taking the fight to iPhone by pointing out the lack of choice when it comes to colour.
That's right; colour.
While Samsung also took advantage of the iPhone 5's arrival, its ads highlighted technical differences between its devices and Apple's, and the .
This thing from Nokia though...
Released by Nokia Germany, the animated video shows iPhone fans queuing up to pick up their shiny new phones, but when a customer asks for a different colour things begin to fall apart.

The love of audio. It's a dangerous condition, because every minute spent obsessing over headphones or specs or conflicting opinions is a minute not spent enjoying your favorite tracks or discovering new ones. That's why a review like this, which compares the iPhone 5 with rival phones based largely on acoustic qualities, runs a high risk of time-wastage -- no one really needs a cacophony of flowery words with no concrete conclusions.
How to steer clear of the technological equivalent of a wine-tasting? By trying our damnedest to focus only on the more practical pros and cons of these top handsets, specifically from the POV of someone who listens to a lot of music on their phone. We're talking about someone who likely prefers high-bitrate recordings and who is ready to spend money on something better than the earbuds (or EarPods) that come in the box.
In addition to testing Apple's new flagship we'll also look at the iPhone 4S, which is now a ton cheaperthan it was a few weeks ago, as well as the Galaxy S III (both the global and the Sprint US version) plus the HTC One X (global and AT&T), and run them all through an audiophile obstacle course that goes right from purely subjective observations through to slightly more scientific tests as well as storage, OS and battery comparisons. There'll also be some consideration of the iPhone 4, Nokia Lumia 800 andPureView 808, although it'll be more condensed.
And yes, we'll end up with an overall winner, but the research here is about more than that. Different phones may suit different people, depending on their priorities. Moreover, new handsets are just around the corner -- the Lumia 920, the Note II, the LG Optimus G and whatever other goodies the future undoubtedly holds -- and so it makes sense to have a bed of knowledge against which new entrants can be judged. Interested? Then let's get started.

Hey look, another round of purported iPad Mini parts have surfaced, this time courtesy of Ukrainian iPhone. Conveniently enough, the Wall Street Journal also happens to be reporting that its sources have confirmed "mass production" of the still unannounced slate has begun BY Apple's "Asian suppliers." This time around, we're looking at an anodized black version of the familiar backplate and its insides. As9to5Mac points out, it's housing a SIM card tray, similar antenna spacers to the current iPhone crop and a similar layout to the current iPod Touch. Alongside that is a separate digitizer in white, hinting that we'll see the final device in the same colorways as the iPhone 5.WSJ also notes that its sources state this tab's LCD screen is indeed 7.85-inches, being sourced from both LG and AU Optronics. Naturally, pricing is almost definitely set to be cheaper than the full-size iPad -- here's to waiting for an invite to thesupposed unveiling event set for this month.

Samsung has issued an invitation for a press event to launch something, and it's hard not to connect the dots with the tantalizing clues it's given -- though skepticism always reigns in the absence of fact. The large 'S' logo in the middle of the page is the first hint that it's likely to be some kind Galaxy S-class smartphone. The tagline offers the next clue: "Prepare for something small to make a big entrance," and elsewhere, "Ready for a little sensation?" Considering that the rumor mill has already churned out the idea of a Galaxy S III Mini -- as some don't cotton to the pocket-unfriendly 4.7-inch screen of the current model -- it's tempting to conclude a smaller version will be launched. However, we could also be looking at the Galaxy Ace 3, so don't forget to keep your expectations in check.

Current rumor suggests that Apple is gearing up to unveil its iPad Mini Oct. 17, with invitations to media arriving Oct. 10. That's according to Fortune, which obtained the information from an unnamed Apple investor who, in turn, heard those dates from other unnamed sources. While that attribution might prove a bit too vaporous for some people, it does align with earlier reports from AllThingsD that Apple is planning to reveal a smaller iPad sometime in October. If those rumors prove accurate, the unveiling of an iPad Mini in that timeframe could prove very bad news for the upcoming Windows 8 tablets. (Gizmodo offers a pretty complete rumor rundown on the iPad Mini's possible features here.) Unlike the traditional PC market, Microsoft doesn't dominate the market for mobile-device operating systems. Windows 7 tablets never gained much of a toehold among tablet users, who prefer iPads and Android-based devices by wide margins. When it comes to Windows 8 (and Windows RT, the version of next-generation Windows for ARM architecture), Microsoft is starting out as the underdog."

[Carnivore] uses a Pipo Max M1 tablet. It’s an Android device that is very responsive thanks t the 1.6 GHz dual-core processor and it runs Jellybean (latest version of Android OS). The one thing he wasn’t so happy with is battery life. Under heavy load it lasts about three hours. When reading an eBook that use can be stretched to 10 hours. His solution was to add an external battery. It turns out the 9.7″ screen makes the body of the device almost exactly the same size as an iPad, so he made an iPad external battery case work with the Android tablet.
[Carnivore] started the hack by disassembling an iP6000 case which houses a 6000 mAh battery. He removed the dock connector and fitted in a 2.5mm power jack. Luckily the buttons on the Android tablet are in nearly the exact same place as those on an iPad, with the power button hole needing just a bit of enlargement. The case charges itself and the tablet’s internal battery using a microUSB port which means he no longer needs to carry around a special power cord. The new hardware increased the battery life by about 75%.

Unopposed motion comes as twist ending to iPhone suit
Today Google subsidiary Motorola Mobility's patent suit against Apple came to a surprising close, with the plaintiff moving the suit be terminated without prejudice.
The text of the motion states no settlement has been reached, and that Apple does not oppose the motion.
The suit was filed in August a week prior to the Apple Vs. Samsung jury decision that awarded $1.05 billion dollars to the iPhone Manufacturer.
The closure of the suit is quite a shock to those following the case, as usually such a motion is filed after settlement and with prejudice, meaning the same issues cannot be brought to court again.
According to Foss Patents, Motorola had been having trouble tracking down some of the documentation for the patents at contest, and with a new judge being appointed that "doesn't make things easy for complainants," it seems the company decided to cut their losses.

Even though a large percentage of people think the iPad Mini is “pointless”, the rumour mill is still working overtime to keep us well-stocked on speculation.
According to Forbes, a source claims Apple will announce a 7.85-inch iPad mini on October 17th and will launch in stores on November 2nd.
So far, the iPad mini is said to be a 7.85-inch device with a 1024 x 768-pixel display. It’s expected to be just 7.3mm thick.
Another story that has surfaced is that an unnamed Brazilian factory (but almost certainly Foxconn) has started production of the device.
The Apple iPad Mini is expected to compete in the lower-priced tablet market, alongside the Amazon Kindle Fire and the Google Nexus 7.

The world’s largest mobile-phone seller has added claims about the iPhone 5 to an existing patent-infringement lawsuit between the two companies.
In its court filing, Samsung said: “As soon as the iPhone 5 was available for purchase, Samsung began its investigation of the product.
The company claims that the iPhone 5 infringes two standards patents and six features patents.
The case is scheduled for trial in 2014 and includes all the previous iPhones as well as the iPad tablets and the iPod Touch.
The two firms have been at loggerheads over design and technology patents and are fighting legal battles on four continents.
In a separate patent case in August, Apple won a $1.05 billion jury verdict against Samsung. However, Apple is now demanding more while Samsung says the jury verdict is invalid. An appeal hearing is scheduled for December, so the saga is far from over.
Rumour that both companies will settle their differences by building giant robots that will battle to the death in a post-industrial wasteland are unfounded.

Steve Wozniak thinks Apple's music-management behemoth should be opened out to Android users.
During an 'Ask Me Anything' session on SlashDot, the co-founder of Apple Computers had a few things to say about the mobile world.
Along with comments about why he thinks there is a perception that Apple has become less relevant in recent years (lack of choice, smaller screen on iPhone), he had something to say about iTunes.
He sees the turning point in Apple's history as when it time it took over the music industry with the iTunes and iPod, helped in part by its willingness to porting iTunes to Windows. So, why doesn't Cupertino do the same with Android?
Woz is one of the few prominent geeks who publicly appreciates both Apple and Android, and while his balanced views on the companies should speak volumes to the more virulent fanboys out there and it's great to see him pushing openness, this is never going to happen.
Porting iTunes to Windows helped shift more iPods, but there's no upside to Apple in terms of hardware by letting Android use the service. Remember, about half of all Apple's profits come from hardware. Take away the need to get an iPhone or IPod to have your iTunes library on the go, and there goes a shit ton of money.
If you could get iTunes on your Galaxy S3 or HTC One X, would you still be as likely to splash out on a portable iDevice?

IGGERMAN GAMES is delighted to announce the release of their new game, the arcade strategy shoot â€em up title, “Wingbreaker.”
“Wingbreaker” is available exclusively on iOS platforms, and is compatible with iPhones or iPod Touch devices that are 3rd generation or newer, and on all iPad devices. “Wingbreaker” is free to download; Riggerman Games are also planning to release the game on Android platforms should the iOS version prove successful.
“Wingbreaker” is an innovative arcade shooting adventure, with a unique blend of 3D graphics and 2D gameplay for users to enjoy. “Wingbreaker” is aimed at both casual and committed gamers that are looking for an exciting challenge on the move when they are unable to access a games console.
In “Wingbreaker,” the users’ first objective is to customise their gunship and starting weapons as they wish. During the gameplay of “Wingbreaker” itself, the users’ objective is to battle their way through a collection of increasingly tough levels and satisfying pre-determined mission objectives prior to the final showdown with a boss.
There are two control methods available to players of “Wingbreaker.” Users can either control their ship by tilting their device in the desired direction of travel, using their thumbs on either side of the screen to fire their ships’ weapons, or a touchpad based method where one pad controls the ship, and another the usage of weapons.
“Wingbreaker” features two in-game playing modes, Mission and Arcade. In “Wingbreaker’s” Mission mode, there are 22 levels to be completed and set objectives to be achieved in order to successfully “finish” the game. Arcade mode is slightly different, with an infinite number of varying and challenging levels, where the objective of the user is to achieve as high a score as possible in order to top the global leaderboards. At the beginning of “Wingbreaker,” all of the in-game weapons and features are locked, only accessible through completing the in-game missions or purchasing an IAP at a cost of $1.99.
“Wingbreaker” features an in-game trophy room with 20 unlockable achievements, enough to keep even the most skilled gamer glued to their screen for hours on end. Intriguingly, only 17 of the achievements are visible to the user, with the remaining three hidden for discovery within the game. “Wingbreaker” also utilises social media integration within the game, with options to post scores achieved within Arcade mode direct to a users’ Facebook or Twitter account. Should gamers wish to do so, they can even upload screenshots of “Wingbreaker” to Facebook as they are playing.
Announcing the launch of “Wingbreaker,” Riggerman Games founder and CEO Richard Kazuo said, “I am delighted to have reached this stage with our first game, and we are very proud of the final result. I welcome any and all feedback around all aspects of the game, and plan on personally responding to each message I receive.”

truth®, the nation's largest youth smoking prevention campaign, announced today that five new levels have been released for the mobile game Flavor Monsters. The game is available for free download on select Apple and Android devices, and was developed as part of a comprehensive campaign to reach teens and young people about the dangers of flavored tobacco products.
The game transports users into a not-too-distant future where "Flavor Monsters" are attacking Earth. The "Flavor Monsters" are creatures that represent the added flavorings in tobacco. Players work to defeat these monsters, thereby stopping the monster invasion. The game features multiple skill levels, each of which features a different series of colorful, flavored monsters to be defeated. An accompanying field manual contains data on all the monsters, along with relevant tobacco-related facts, and details on the tools that can be used to defeat the monsters.
truth also announced that specially-produced Flavor Monsters' collectible vinyl toys are now available online. In conjunction with the release of the Flavor Monsters game, truth partnered with Luke Rook of Lulubell Toy Bodega to develop a line of custom vinyl toys. Best known for his 'Grody Shogun' line of toys, Luke is a well-known toy designer who designs, sculpts and paints toys out of his Arizona studio and store. For more information, visithttp://www.lulubelltoys.com.
This August, truth embarked on its first ever gaming tour in an effort to connect the Flavor Monsters game experience to gamers in a tangible, interactive way. At each stop, truth's crew of young adult "tour riders" speak directly with teens and young adults - educating them about the marketing tactics of the tobacco industry and the health effects, addictiveness and social consequences of tobacco. At gaming conventions, an interactive booth called "45 Flavors" allows attendees to play the game onsite, get their picture taken with a Flavor Monster, both sample and buy truth-related gear and products, and take part in a special video virtual simulation that will give attendees the experience of being part of the actual Flavor Monsters game. All of the activities around the booth experience are geared toward 'recruiting' future monster hunters, and educating people about flavor monsters, as a way to reinforce messaging about the tobacco industry's use of flavorings in tobacco products. The tour's next stop will be at New York Comic Con, October 11-14, 2012 at the Javits Center in New York City, booth #1820.

Strange, but true: it seems James Bond is an Android man and the Xperia TL, his phone of choice. Well, at least that's the marketing tie-in made possible by Sony's corporate synergy. Regardless, the company's latest smartphone flagship has found a new stateside home on AT&T's 4G LTE network. The 4.6-inch device, unveiled at IFA 2012, reps a 720p HD Reality display powered by Mobile BRAVIA Engine, 13-megapixel rear module capable of "sleep to snap" fast capture and runs a skinned build of Ice Cream Sandwich atop a dual-core 1.5GHz S4 CPU. It also comes loaded up with three of the Japanese outfit's media apps -- Walkman, Movies and Album -- a bevy of exclusive content (e.g. ringtones, wallpaper, etc.) from the next Bond film, Skyfall, and packs one SmartTag in the box for use with the handset's NFC chip. There's no official word on when this black beauty's set to hit retail shelves -- or pricing, for that matter. But if the imminent arrival of its galactic stablemates is any indication, expect to see it in "the coming weeks." Official PR after the break.

Well, Korea might have beaten the UK to the punch, but England's carriers are getting Samsung's latest super-sized phone ahead of the US. As promised, the Galaxy Note II is hitting shelves today at Three UK, O2 and Vodafone. So far, only Three has made the launch official with a press release, but we're sure O2 and Vodafone will follow in short order. The privilege of running the 5.5-inch monstrosity on Three will cost you €69 up front with either a €34 or €36 a month contract, while pay-as-you-go customers will have to fork over €499. If PR is your thing, it's awaiting you after the break.
