This Android device can recognize faces and move to keep them in frame. It’s a proof of concept that uses commonly available parts and software packages.
The original motivation for the project was [Dan O's] inclination to give the OpenCV software a try. OpenCV is an Open Source Computer Vision package that takes on the brunt of the job when it comes to discerning meaning from images. To give the phone the power to move he designed and printed his own mounting brackets for the phone and a couple of hobby servos. An IOIO board connects to the Android device in order to control the motors. On the software side all [Dan] needed to do was write some code to interface the output of the OpenCV face tracking modules with the input of the IOIO. See the finished project demonstration after the jump.
This system can easily be implemented with other hardware, like this Arduino-based version we looked at earlier in the year.

The iPhone Dev-Team has just outed a new version of Redsnow that opens up iOS 6 to an official version of the sinful, definitely-not-Apple Cydia store, but you'll still have to be tethered to use it. The process is now simpler, as the latest version recognizes your already-installed iOS 6 OS and installs only the necessary jailbreak files, and Cydia is now installed automatically as well -- rather than needing a complex workaround like the last version. If you're willing to put up with the tethering and have an A4-powered iPhone 4, 3GS or gen-4 iPod touch device, the laundry list of how to do it is at the source below -- but there's always the risk of bricking, so caveat emptor, of course.

While Apple's supposed October 23rd event still exists only in the land of leaks and rumors for now, there's mounting suspicions that it won't just be a one-trick pony if it becomes real. Both AllThingsD and9to5Mac claim to know that a 13-inch MacBook Pro with a Retina display is also on the cards for the presentation and would be just what you'd expect: a smaller version of the 15-inch model with four times the screen resolution of its conventional equivalent (2,560 x 1,600 here), all-flash storage and a price premium. There's not much more to go on beyond talk of a D1 codename versus the 15-inch D2, although we won't have long to find out if the rumor represents more than just wishful thinking. You might want to hold out on buying that MacBook Air for a week as a precaution.

Pricing for Apple’s forthcoming iPad Mini has apparently been leaked, showing prices ranging from just under £250 to £600.
The images, which were posted to MobileGeeks, show costs for a range of four different models with each type coming with a choice of wi-fi plus 3G or wi-fi only.
The basic 8GB wireless-only model is shown to be priced at €249, while the addition of 3G will bump the price up to €349.
The 16GB versions are priced at €349 and €449 for the wi-fi-only and 3G models, and the pattern holds the same for the 32GB devices, which are priced at €449 and €549.
The higher end 64GB devices are priced at a hefty €549 and €649 – a high price for a device with a 7.85-inch display.
The iPad Mini is expected to be announced on October 23rd with sales expected to start in early November.

Although there is no official word from Samsung, Phones4U has revealed that it will be shipping the Galaxy S3 Mini from November 2nd.
Announced last week, a number of mobile phone retailers have started listing the S3 Mini on their sites.
Clover and Unlocked Mobiles are both offering the phone for just under £300 and Phones4U has said that contracts will start at £25 per month on two year deals.
Carphone Warehouse has also announced that the phone will be available for pre order but has not yet released a price.
The Samsung Galaxy S3 Mini will have a dual-core system-on-chip, 1GB of RAM, 8GB onboard storage, a 4-inch 800 x 480 AMOLED display, 5MP rear camera, Android 4.1 Jelly Bean, and NFC capabilities.
“The award winning Galaxy S3 has been extremely well received globally since it launched earlier this year so we are thrilled to be able to offer our customers the same revolutionary design, intuitive usability and intelligence in a mini version.” Said Simon Stanford, vice president, telecommunications and networks division, Samsung UK and Ireland.
The size may be mini, but with the full Samsung Galaxy S3 going for around £370, the price still seems quite high.
Vodafone, Orange and O2 have all announced that they will sell Samsung’s latest handset.

Rumours indicate that Apple is planning on releasing an iMac with a radically new case design.
Photos found in a thread on the forum of Chinese siteWeiPhone.com allegedly show the new ‘redesigned’ model of Apple’s iMac line.
The post implies that the new iMac will have a thinner profile with a new shell design that’s curved like a water droplet rather than squared off.
The poster says that the iMac will be announced in the next month, likely on Oct 23rd – when Apple is expected to announce the iPad Mini.
Wi-Fi and Bluetooth antennas, fans, and a hard drive can all be seen in the leaked photos. The poster also reaffirmed an earlier claim that the new iMac display would be attacked to the protective cover glass rather than a separate display assembly.

According to NPD's latest mobile gaming report, 23 per cent of "app gamers" say they play games exclusively on mobile devices, with almost 50 per cent saying they play more games now than in 2011.
An app gamer is defined as a mobile gamer who plays most often on a smartphone or tablet.
The reason behind this increase is down to two factors: convenience and free games.
However, although a large percentage of games start off being free, 30 per cent of those surveyed said they have upgraded to the premium product or made in-app purchases.
Tablet gamers are more likely to upgrade and and make in-app purchases than those using smartphones.
Liam Callahan, analyst, NPD Group, said: “Many mobile gaming consumers have grown accustomed to gaming for free, making it essential to find the sweet spot for pricing that encourages purchasing by as many consumers as possible.”
"Another opportunity for the industry as a whole is to convert mobile-only gamers to engage in other gaming activities across portables, consoles and PC’s where we see more money being spent per user.”

The Samsung Galaxy S III is regarded by many to be the best phone on the market today, but it's already being trumped by the iPhone 5.
Mobile advertising network Chitika has said that the iPhone 5 is generating more traffic across its network than the GS3.
It has been less than a month since the release of the latest Apple handset, while Samsung's flagship device has been available for months, but the new iPhone has a 56 per cent share of all traffic produced by the two devices.
Chitika said: "Record-breaking sales numbers, along with new 4G browsing speeds which encourage data usage, are the most likely explanation for this tremendous growth."

EA founder says console market will become 'more like a hobby market' due to smartphone and tablet gaming.
Trip Hawkins founded Electronic Arts (EA) back in 1982, worked closely with Steve Jobs in the early days of Apple and founded Digital Chocolate, and although he doesn't have the same power today as he once did, his words still carry a lot of weight.
In an interview with IGN, he said that he sees console gaming becoming a hobby:
"The console market is always going to be with us, because there’s always going to be a hardcore segment, a segment that likes innovation. But it’s going to become a smaller market, and it’s going to be more like a hobby market. You look at airplanes. Most of us just want to be a passenger, but there’s a hobby market for people who are really into aviation and want to take flying lessons and maybe someday have their own airplane. I think that’s what’s happening to the console market.
"But there are billions of people now playing games. The gaming industry is finally becoming mass-market. It’s across two billion PCs and four billion mobile phones, and within a few years a billion tablets."
Hawkins continued: "Games are going everywhere. Plenty of people are playing for social reasons and playing when it’s convenient. It’s a trend towards mobile- and browser- and cloud-based games. You contrast that with what happens when you have to either purchase or download a specific app that runs native on a specific device and you only ever play it when you have that platform in front of you.
"In the old days I’d go down to the basement to play Grand Theft Auto. But the Facebook gamer is able to play at work, at home, in a hotel on a PC. They can get access to a browser just about anywhere. People are thinking about convenience first."
What do you think? Is mobile gaming going to push the console market back underground?

When all 3 legs of your 3-legged strategy fail, what do you do? You rush — run run run — to change your total strategy. But what would a madman do?' Ex-Nokia exec Tommi Ahonen's new article has a few suggestions. Is the Nokia board either asleep at the wheel, or incompetent, or in collusion with the incompetent CEO? Ahonen provides an insider's view not just of how Nokia's Windows phone strategy has failed, but how this has spread to other parts of the company's technology. He says the 'Elop Effect' has 'single-handedly destroyed [...] Europe's biggest tech giant.' He raises the question: Why is Nokia's board failing to act? We've discussed Tommi's articles before, where he was correctly predicting Windows Phone's market failure at a point where others were claiming that 'the Lumia line is, in fact, selling quite nicely.'"

Is Google planning on integrating an antivirus scanner into Android? A just-released Google Play store app update, as well as the company's recent acquisition of VirusTotal seem to hint that yes, Google is looking into it. 'Google yesterday started rolling out an update to its Google Play Store app: version 3.8.17 from August was bumped to version 3.9.16 in October. Android Police got its hands on the APK and posted an extensive tear down. The first change noted was the addition of new security-related artwork (exclamation icons and security shields) as well as the following strings: App Check 'Allow Google to check all apps installed to this device for harmful behavior? To learn more, go to Settings > Security.''"

Apple is planning to shift production of its ARM-based microprocessors from Samsung to the Taiwanese chip-baking giant TSMC as early as next year, according to a report by the China Economic News Service(CENS). The report cites CitiGroup Global Markets analyst J.T. Hsu as saying that TSMC will be Apple's sole supplier of 20nm quad-core processors, with volume production to begin in the fourth quarter of 2013. He also noted that Apple began its 20nm chip-verfication process at TSMC in August of this year. Hsu told CENS that the future quad-core chips were intended for Apple's 'iPad, iTV and even Macbook,' turning up the heat on two rumors that have been simmering for months: that Apple is planning a move into the television market, and that an ARM-based MacBook is in the works.

Put that old Android phone to good use by mounting it on the wall as a smart thermostat. This open source hardware and software project lets you replace your home’s thermostat with an Android device which adds Internet connectivity and all that comes with the increase in computing power.
The brunt of the hardware work is taken care of by using an IOIO board which makes it easy to interface any Android device with the simple hardware which switches your HVAC equipment. We’ve been waiting for the launch of the new IOIO design and if it comes in at a lower price as has been rumored that makes this project in the price range of the least expensive of programmable thermostats (assuming you already have an Android device to devote to it). Simply etch your own board to host the relays and voltage rectifier and you’re in business.
There is a client and server app, both free in the Play Store. The server runs on the wall-mounted device with the client offering control via a network connection. The features of the system are shown off quite well in the video after the break.
This sounds like a perfect use for that phone you ripped out of the pages of a magazine.

This super quick hack will be fun to do with the kids. Remember the days of View-Masters? You’d put a disk of small slides into a little plastic viewer and a stereoscopic image would jump out at you in 3D! Now you can not only view stereoscopic images on your smartphone, but make your own too!
To shoot the images just hold your phone in portrait orientation and take a snapshot of your subject, then move the camera six inches to the right and take a second image. The two pics need to be displayed on the screen at the same time and for this [Plarky] uses a free iPhone app called Pic Stitch. We’re sure you can find an Android equivalent in no time if you do a bit of searching.
To view the stereoscope it helps to make a divider out of cardboard like the one seen above. You’ll need to cross your eyes and focus on a point to bring the two images together. We don’t remember having to do this with the View-Master so we’re hoping someone will take the idea and improve upon it. We’ve already seen a digital View-Master. Now we want to see those dual screens replaced with an iPhone cradle.

AllThingsD has reported that Apple will hold a special media event on Tuesday, October 23rd to unveil the iPad Mini.
“People familiar with Apple’s plans tell us that the company will unveil the so-called “iPad mini” on Oct. 23 at an invitation-only event,” reads the site.
Although there has been no official confirmation on the event or its location, rumours suggest that it is to take place at Apple’s Town Hall Auditorium.
The event (if it happens) will be just three days before Microsoft’s new Surface tablet it officially released.
Apple’s smaller iPad is expected to have a 7.85-inch screen, retina display, be 7.2mm thick, have 8GB of internal storage, and a lightning connector. It is also rumoured that the device will have Wi-Fi but no 3G.

That's enough for roughly 86 per cent of the planet's population.
The International Telecommunications Union (ITU), an agency within the United Nations, has reported that there are around six billion mobile phone subscriptions in the world.
According to the ITU, China alone accounts for one billion subscriptions, with India expected to hit the one billion mark by the end of this year.
The planet's population is estimated at seven billion.
The agency also says 2.3 billion people were internet users by the end of 2011, with 70 per cent of users living in wealthier, industrialised countries.

A US appeals court has overturned an injunction on the sale ofSamsung's Galaxy Nexus smartphone.
In making the ruling, the Appeals Court said that Judge Koh had abused her discretion in ordering the injunction on the device.
The move is a blow to Apple in its battle against Android.
The Samsung Galaxy Nexus wasn't part of the trial that ended with a $1.05 billion verdict in favour of Apple - Koh issued the injunction against the Galaxy Nexus prior to the trial.
Koh agreed with Apple that the phone infringed on Apple's patent for a function that searches the net and a device's internal memory at the same time. However the Appeals Court said it reversed the decision because Koh had abused her discretion and because Apple could not prove that consumers were buying the Nexus because of the infringing technology.
