MobileInsurance.co.uk has provided some interesting insight to the claims they tolerate each day, compiling a list of the strangest phone claims they've had over the past year.
Prepare yourself, this goes beyond basic water damage or having it stolen from a sticky-fingered rapscallion...
1. A farmer in Devon claimed his iPhone disappeared into a cow's back passage when he used the torch during a calving.
2. A lady in her early 40s from Nottingham baked her Nokia 6303i into a Victoria Sponge she'd been making for her daughter's birthday, suffering a heat of gas mark 5.
3. A lady in her 30s claimed she'd been walking her dog in Wales, when a seagull swooped down and took her Samsung Galaxy from her hand.
4. A woman in her late 20s from Bristol claimed the vibration function on her BlackBerry Bold 9900 phone stopped working while she used it as an adult toy.
5. A 40 year old construction worker said his iPhone 4S had fallen out of his back pocket when he pulled his jeans down before sitting on the toilet. Not realising, he went about his business and flushed the chain.
6. A man in his 30s claimed he'd been filming monkeys from the car window in Longleat Safari Park with his HTC One X when a monkey climbed on the roof and snatched it.
7. A couple re-enacting the "I'm King of the World!" scene from Titanic lost their phone over the side of their cruise ship, whilst trying to take a photo of themselves.
8. A pyrotechnician was setting up a show for the National Fireworks Championships in Plymouth, and having left his iPhone 3GS within the "blast zone", it was nowhere to be found when he returned post-show, having been fired 3,000 feet into the air before exploding.
9. A lady in her 20s from Liverpool admitted she'd thrown her HTC Desire X at her boyfriend, whom she'd discovered was cheating, but it missed him and hit a wall; breaking the handset.
10. Rather than pay £60 for a ticket to see Blur at their sell-out Hyde Park shows, one customer tried to film the event on his iPhone from up a nearby tree - he got a little too excited as the band came on stage though, and dropped his phone onto the ground below.
An additional stat shows 64 per cent of claimants say they've walked into an object while texting.
John Lamerton, MD, MobileInsurance.co.uk, said: "I must say, we tend to see a lot of weird and wonderful claims coming in from customers, but these 10 had to be the most bizarre.
"I'm not sure how some of them even came about, particularly in the case of the farmer and the cow."

We get it, some of you are feeling a little burned by the iPad update today. It was only about eight months ago that Apple's slate was last refreshed with the stunning Retina display, now its gotten a subtle, but hardly negligible spec bump. If you're having a little bit of buyer's remorse and only made the plunge in the last 30 days, you might be in luck. According to CNET, at least one Apple store (the Stockton Street branch in San Francisco) is offering a free upgrade to a fourth-gen iPad for those that picked up the 9.7-inch tablet in the last month. However, a manager at the 5th Ave shop in NYC told us this isn't a company-wide policy. Instead its up to individual stores to decide whether or not to offer the extended exchange period, or simply stick with the standard 14-day return policy. We called a few locations and most don't appear to be willing to make the trade, though the branch in the Mall at Millenia in Orlando, FL is playing ball. We can't guarantee success, but it can't hurt to give your local shop a call.

Cave - the studio behind such cult favourite bullet hell games as Deathsmiles and Bug Princess 2 - is releasing its previous Windows Phone exclusive DoDonPachi Maximum on iOS this Friday, 26th October. It will cost £4.99 / $6.99 for its first three days, before it resumes to its normal price of £7.99 / $11.99 on 29th October. The game will require at least an iPhone 4 or iPad 2, though Cave noted the game is optimised for iPhone 5 and can be controlled entirely with gestures rather than virtual buttons.Cave's other iOS offerings like Dodonpachi Resurrection and Bug Princess 2 have been well received. Our Chris Schilling spoke highly of the latter in his App of the Day write-up where wrote "Bug Princess 2 offers plenty of insect-blasting fun whether you're a shmup veteran or a total novice."

The Borderlands franchise will make its portable gaming debut on Wednesday, October 31, when Borderlands Legends launches on iPhone and iPad for $4.99 and $6.99, respectively. Rather than furthering the series' FPS heritage, however, Legends instead opts for an isometric action-RPG take on murdering people and then stealing from them.
Familiar inventory management and skill tree systems return, though the rest of the experience is reportedly an entirely new, touch-based affair, according to 2K Games' announcement. Based on what we've seen in the gallery below, we're inclined to believe that this ain't your mother's Borderlands.

So you want the performance of a new-fangled SSD with the extra storage of a good 'ole HDD? Apple has you covered with Fusion Drive for its new iMac. Unlike existing standalone hybrid drives the company is apparently "fusing" together a separate SSD and HDD with custom software in Mountain Lion. Better yet, the OS and all the pre-installed applications live on the SSD by default, while your documents and media reside on the HDD. This sounds similar to the software RAID functionality in OS X, but cranked to the next level. Stay tuned for details as we find out more.

Apple's iPad mini and 4th-generation iPad didn't arrive alone. In the company's time-honored tradition, it has timed the FCC filings for both devices to show up alongside the products themselves. Each iOS tablet has been approved in both singular WiFi and dual cellular editions: the iPad mini has appeared as the WiFi-only A1432 as well as the A1454 and A1455 for worldwide HSPA+, EV-DO and LTE coverage, while the full-size iPad has been cleared in directly paralleled A1458, A1459 and A1460 versions. Not surprisingly, the frequency range matches that of the iPhone 5 and suggests that we're dealing with the same Qualcomm MDM9615 chip. We'll know more once the two iPads are in our hands and those ofteardown artists, but for now you can explore Apple's regulatory gymnastics in full at the source links.

Apple has revealed the mystery product that everyone knew was coming – the iPad Mini.
According to various reports, the launch event opened with Jonathan Ives talking about how the new device is not a small iPad but an iPad concentrated.
It’s an all new design, which might be somewhat galling for the Apple fans who just bought the fourth generation iPad, which was launched in March this year.
Priced at $329, the iPad Mini is just 7.2mm thick, which according to Tim Cook is thinner than a pencil. It has the same resolution as its larger brethren, 1024x768, but thanks to its smaller screen this will make images seem sharper.
In terms of spec, it’s similar to the iPad 2 as it runs the Apple A5 chipset and has Wireless N, Bluetooth 4.0 and optional 4G connectivity, although the Mini uses iOS 6.
Battery life is given as ten hours, the device carries two cameras – a 720 pixel forward facing camera and a 1080 pixel rear facing camera – and it even has Siri.

Just two and a half years after creating the product line, Apple announced today it has already notched its 100 millionth iPad sold. While we're still expecting to see a new, smaller model (get all the 4th gen info, including the new mini right here) unveiled today Apple is leading off its tablet talk with some chest thumping. According to its stats, it sold more iPads in the June quarter than any one PC manufacturers sold of their entire lineup, a hefty feat even if you take into account customers waiting for Windows 8. It's also referencing data that says the iPad accounts for 91 percent of web traffic among tablets. If that's not enough, there's also love for the education sector with a new version of iBooks author, which should get plenty of use with 2,500 schools in the US using them, and 80 percent of the curriculum available in iBooks.

It's not quite what we expected, but Apple has just introduced us to a new, 4th generation iPad at its event in San Jose, California today. It's essentially a hardware refresh for Apple's 3rd gen slate, as it packs new A6X silicon with quad-core graphics that the company claims provides double the performance of the old A5X chip. The new iPad also gets dual-band 802.11 a/b/g/n WiFi, Sprint and KDDI compatible LTE, a 720p FaceTime camera round front and the new image processor first seen in the iPhone 5. Of course, it also gets the reversible Lightning port that debuted on on the iPhone, and will be available in both black and white. Pricing stays the same as its predecessor, with a 16GB WiFi version for $499 and a 16GB model with cellular data on board costs $629. Interested? You'll be able to pick one up through Apple's online and brick and mortar stores or Apple Authorized Resellers in a host of countries (listed in the PR after the break) on November 2nd.

October 23rd, 2012, 20:33 Posted By: wraggster
Well hello there, the worst-kept secret in tech. Apple's iPad Mini is a 7.9-inch tablet that's designed to go toe-to-toe with Google's Nexus 7. Packing the same 1,024 x 768 resolution as the iPad 2, it's designed to be the newest entry-level unit in the company's growing iPad pantheon -- and despite the smaller screen, Apps should carry across seamlessly. On the hardware size, the 7.2mm thick, .68 pounds device has been manufactured with an "all new" process that gives it the same anodized edges as you'll find on the iPhone 5. While Phil Schiller didn't mention Google or the Nexus 7 by name in his presentation, the rival slate and its app library was compared to the iOS device -- claiming that the .9-inch increase in diagonal space gives Apple's slate 35 percent more display area than Google and ASUS' collaboration.
If you were hoping for equal specifications to the (now-retired) 2012 iPad, you may be mildly disappointed. While it will pack a 5-megapixel camera and LTE, it's running the last-generation A5 CPU*, but combined with that less-dense display, might explain why the company has been able to squeeze 10 hours of battery life from such a small device. Pre-orders for the 16GB WiFi-only model begin on Friday (October 26th) and will begin shipping on November 2nd, while units with added LTE will set you back an extra $130 (or so) and be available shortly after.

When ex-Microsoft executive Stephen Elop took the reins of Nokia back in 2011, he memorably compared the Finnish phone-maker to a burning old platform in the North Sea. 'I have learned that we are standing on a burning platform,' he wrote in a widely circulated memo. 'And, we have more than one explosion — we have multiple points of scorching heat that are fueling a blazing fire around us.' Elop suggested competitors such as Apple and Google had 'poured flames on our market share,' with the damage accelerated by Nokia's failure to embrace big trends. His solution: abandon Nokia's homegrown operating systems, including Symbian, in favor of Microsoft's Windows Phone. Nokia's Windows Phones managed to attract some significant buzz at this year's Consumer Electronics Show, and early sales seemed solid. But now there are signs the situation could be deteriorating."

Boasting a better screen quality than Apple’s iPhone 5 and Samsung’s Galaxy S3, HTC’s new smartphone has a 5-inch display with 440 pixels per inch.
The Android handset is the first to have Super LCD 3 standard, with current HTC devices, such as the One X, utilising Super LCD 2 tech.
Super LCD 3 bumps the phone's display up to 1080p from the 720p seen in the current generation.
But what does this all mean for the user? Well, the display is around 25 per cent sharper than the iPhone 5 and Galaxy S3.
Powered by a Qualcomm 1.5GHz quad-core processor with 2GB of RAM, the J Butterfly has 16GB of storage, an 8PM back-facing camera and a 2PM front-facing one. Running on Android 4.1 Jelly Bean, the phone will have 4G LTE connectivity.
The handset goes on sale in Japan in December and comes in white, black or red. Although there are no details about a worldwide release, the J Butterfly is a ‘global phone’, meaning that it will work on CDMA and GSM networks. As long as you buy it unlocked from Japan, you’ll be able to use it in Europe…so everyone lives happily ever after.

Nokia has today revealed its most affordable Windows Phone, running on version 7.5 of Microsoft’s mobile OS.
With Windows Phone 8 hogging the headlines, why has Nokia chosen to release a new smartphone running an older platform? Well, Nokia wouldn’t of been able to give the Lumia 510 its $199 price tag if it has included the minimum specs for Windows Phone 8, and a lower price point is something the company has been heavily focusing on.
"With the Nokia Lumia 510 we continue to meet our commitment to bring Windows Phone to new, lower price points," said Jo Harlow, executive vice president of Nokia Smart Devices.
"People who use Windows Phone quickly realise how much more intuitive it is than other smartphone platforms, and Nokia Lumia is the best embodiment of the Windows Phone experience. With the Nokia Lumia 510 we're looking forward to welcoming more people into the Windows Phone experience."
Product specs include a 4-inch 800x480 capacitive touch screen, Snapdragon S1 processor, 5MP camera, 256MB of RAM, 4GB mass memory, and 7GB of free SkyDrive storage.
Sales of the Lumia 510 are planned for November 2012. So far, Nokia has confirmed that the smartphone will be available in India, China, other Asia-Pacific countries and South America.
It is expected that it won’t be too long until a UK release is announced, and going buy Nokia’s estimated price tag, it should cost around £125.

The Apple world had a little wobble yesterday following an article in the Korea Times that said Samsung would stop shipping displays to its rival in 2013.
A Samsung Display executive was quoted as saying: "We are unable to supply our flat-screens to Apple with huge price discounts. Samsung has already cut our portion of shipments to Apple and next year we will stop shipping displays."
Samsung makes a lot of money from Apple, supplying it with screens, processors and memory chips, with Apple equally reliant on its South Korean nemesis.
But, like so many things in Apple/Samsung Land, this has turned out to be bullshit.
Samsung has denied the entire story, has requested that the Korea Times edit it.
Apple has previously said that it wants to end its reliance on Samsung for certain parts that go into products that Apple competes against Samsung with, but it seems that split is going to happen just yet.
Apple has been looking to LG and Sharp for displays, with a suggestion than TSMC will replace Samsung as chip provider.

It may be hard to believe that there are other phones on the market beyond the iPhone and Samsung Galaxy, but there are.
In fact, the NPD Group says sub $150 smartphones will account for a 29 per cent share of the smartphone market by 2016 – spiking to 60 per cent for the APAC region.
Meanwhile, low-cost smartphone shipments are set to double every year from the 4.5m in 2010, up to 311m in 2016.
Android will also power a large number of the devices, rising from two per cent this year to 29 per cent in 2016.
Shawn Lee, research director at NPD DisplaySearch, said: "Most mobile phone subscribers around the world can’t afford to spend more than $200 for a smartphone, on top of their service plans.
"Low-cost smartphone manufacturers create these new products quickly without much investment, which has allowed them to extend their telecom subscriber base to emerging regions."

Tech developer PowerA recently unveiled the MOGA Mobile Gaming System, which allows users of Android smartphones and tablets to transform their device into something of a games console.
The pocket-sized MOGA controller connects to mobiles via Bluetooth, enabling gamers to play using analogue sticks and shoulder/action buttons – similar to a PlayStation or Xbox control pad.
Developers are able to use the MOGA SDK to produce compatible games, while consumers can download around 45 titles from the MOGA Pivot app which is free on Google Play.
It's a further cry to support opinions that mobiles will kill off console games, as the MOGA can now be found on sale for $49.99 in 7,000 US stores including Best Buy, Walmart, Toys R Us, Gamestop and more.
Eric Bensussen, president of PowerA, said: "MOGA has really captured the imagination of the development community and consumers. We are ecstatic that mobile gamers can finally get their hands on MOGA today.
"With huge support at retail that is far beyond what we could have possibly imagined, and a strong in-store demo program, gamers will now be able to experience the right way to game on their mobile devices."
Gameloft, Atari, Namco Bandai and SEGA are among publishers developing MOGA-enabled games.

"If the Apple rumor mill proves correct, the unveiling of the iPad Mini this week could mean sayonara for the iPad 2. At least, that's the prediction of Evercore Partners analyst Rob Cihra, who wrote in a recent note to investors that he believes Apple will remove the iPad 2 from its lineup to make room for a smaller tablet. Apple insider excerpted parts of Cihra's note Oct. 19. Of course, that's just one analyst speculating about the future plans of a company known for playing things close to the proverbial vest: Apple's Oct. 23 event in California could feature all sorts of surprises. So what do we know about the iPad Mini? First, that it might not be called the iPad Mini — that's a moniker dreamed up by the press. Second, a cheaper and smaller iPad could impact the market for e-readers and 'price-sensitive users,' according to J.P. Morgan analyst Mark Moskowitz, which in turn could mean a challenging future for Amazon, Google, and other IT vendors marketing cheaper tablets. Third, the media—driven by unnamed sources and blurry spy photos—seems to have collectively settled on a 7.85-inch screen without a high-resolution Retina Display."
