Outspoken tech exec and Apple co-founder Steve Wozniak has labelled his former employer as āarrogantā regarding its refusal to make the iPhone 5 larger.
Though the design and construction of Appleās latest handset is undoubtedly amongst the very best on the market, the handset is certainly undersized compared to its strongest competitors such as Samsungās Galaxy S III.
And Wozniak clearly thinks this is a serious mistake.
"Part of me wishes that Apple had not been so kind of arrogant and feeling weāre the only one with the right clue,ā he told South African site TechCentral, as transcribed by MCVās sister site ME.
āI wish they had made a small and a large version of the iPhone; that would have been great for me. Keep the aspect ratio the same, horizontal and vertical the same, but just grow it in the other way.
āI think Apple tricked itself and said āoh you could reach everything with one thumbā and I donāt see anybody having any trouble using the larger screens.
"Apple said that as a defensive move because when the other phones came out they all had larger screens. Apple is now trying to run with that defence, saying āwe are rightā and really thereās a mix of people. Not all people want the same thing and a lot of people really like the big screens.ā

Sega announced on Monday that Crazy Taxi would hit Apple's iOS devices this month. Well, go nuts because it's out now.
It's a full port of the Dreamcast classic, with the main mode and 16 mini games and the music from Offspring and Bad Religion. As you'll see in the new trailer below, it's also got the classic voice over man who insists 'it's party time, let's have some fun', and Crazy Taxi's dodgy physics are as present and incorrect as ever. We wouldn't have it any other way.
There are optional tilt and touch controls, up-rezzed visuals thanks to the Retina displays, and is compatible with iPhone, iPod Touch and iPad (iOS version 4.3 or later).
Sega has also confirmed today that the game is headed to Android "soon", so people who love to hate Apple can play too.
Get the iOS version here.

Atari may be little more than a vestige of its former self, but that isn't stopping the publisher from crafting new versions of its classic games. "Super Bunny Breakout," for example, is a project created with Ville-crafter Zynga, and it's a new spin on Atari classic Breakout. Not to be outdone, Zynga's added its own Zynga-esque flavor to the game, which means ... in-app purchases. Yes indeed, rather than a regular ol' ball bouncing around a stage, Super Bunny Breakout has players bouncing "a daredevil rabbit with an appetite for revenge -- sadly, that rabbit (and his friends) have seasonal affective disorder (or something) and can't help but lose energy. How to replenish that energy? You'll "collect or purchase coins via in-app purchase," apparently. Despite the stink of in-game purchases, Super Bunny Breakoutcosts $0.99 and is currently available on iPhone, iPad, and iPod Touch through iTunes.

Appleās fight to get the iPhone 5 into customerās hands is continuing to prove troublesome.
It has already had to deal with the iOS 6 Maps fiasco and potential issues with its camera, and now early claims of scratched casing are leading to production issues.
Bloomberg reports that senior Apple management has already chastised Foxconn executives for an unacceptably high number of units arriving with customers with scratches already found on the casing.
Apple has publicly insisted that all aluminium products are prone to scratching, though it seems the issue has caused anger behind the scenes.
As a result stricter benchmarks have been implemented, putting yet more strain on the already squeezes production schedules. It is speculated that this, and other supply issues, have cost upwards of $60bn since the iPhone 5 debuted last month.
It should be noted that iPhone 5 enjoyed record sales in its first week on the market, though that hasnāt stopped Appleās once-impervious slipping almost nine per cent in the last month.

In a recent interview, Eric Schmidt discussed Googleās relationship with Apple.
The Google chairman told tech blog AllThingsDigital that the clash between Appleās iOS and Googleās Android would help shape the tech landscape of the future.
"The Android-Apple platform fight is the defining fight in the industry today,ā said Schmidt. āThe world has never seen a platform fight like the one now underway.ā
āThe sheer volume of mobile device sales dwarfed any platform battle that came before it in the technology industry, including Microsoft vs. Apple in the desktop computing market,ā he added.
Schmidt revealed that he had seen surveys indicating that four Android devices sold for every one Apple device.
When probed about Apple ditching Google to create its own maps, he commented that: "Apple should have kept our maps, they're better maps."
He explained to AllThingsDigital that 'Apple has learned that maps are hard' and said that Google has spent over five years investing in its maps app, while Apple has been in ācatch-up modeā.
"We invested hundreds of millions of dollars in satellite work, airplane work, drive-by work, and we think we have the best product in the industry," he said.
It is expected that Google will release an official Google Maps iPhone app by the end of the year, when asked about this, Schmidt said: āIf we made one, they would have to approve it. They havenāt approved all of our apps in the past.ā
When asked in the interview if he would rather be CEO of Apple, Amazon or Facebook, the Google chairman replied with: āWhich one has the most cash?ā

Microsoft product manager Petr Bobek has said that the company is planning to release native iOS and Android versions of Office 2013 next year.
Speaking at a press event in the Czech Republic, Bobek told Czech site IHNED that native apps will be made available from March 2013.
A Microsoft press release said: "In addition to Windows, Office will be also available on other operating systems, Windows Phone, Windows RT, Mac OS, Android, iOS and Symbian."
Office for iPad has been a rumour that just hasn't gone away, and the idea of being able to use Word, Excel, PowerPoint etc from other handsets is very attractive.
The release also said that there will also be a new version of Office Web Apps too.
Microsoft later released the following statement: "The information shared by our Czech subsidiary is not accurate. We do not have anything further to share at this time."
Whatever, Microsoft. While some of the Office alternatives on mobile are perfectly acceptable, Mobile Office 2013 (or whatever it winds up being called) is going to be huge.

In the recent months, news has been coming out about the US Government taking action against sites that host pirated Android applications - specifically āapplications hosted without the authorās permissionā.
While Iām not sure whether the recent crackdown was initiated by Google, I am happy to see it finally happen. Appleās been very authoritative on their stance against piracy, and was always quick to act against it, while my impression has been that Googleās been turning a blind eye to the rampant piracy of Android apps ā including some fairly brazen ones that ran on paid membership systems.
I donāt want to blame the appās lackluster sales on piracy necessarily ā software companies do this all the time and come up with some fairly ludicrous numbers. Still, given that the top Google search term for Spark 360 was āspark 360 apkā for as long as I can remember, it would be naive to say that it didnāt have at least a moderate impact on the appās sales.
For myself, I hesitate to put any sort of figure on the issue, since I know that some of those who pirated the app would probably not bother to actually pay for it, while others would simply just hoard it and not use it. Ultimately, what made Spark 360 unfeasible as a commercial app was Microsoftās official Xbox Live app ā it killed almost 90% of the daily sales (which had already plummeted in February ā for reasons still unknown).
My experience with being a mobile developer has been an odd one ā itās exposed me to various less-than-savory ābusinessesā that routinely contact (read: spam) me with offers of mutual collaboration, free app hosting, paid app hosting, and even the odd āwe have created an account for you and uploaded your app, hereās your passwordā. I still get emails and offers about OpenSpark ā an application that hasnāt even worked for two years. Hard to imagine this experience being unique ā Iām fairly certain that many others app authors get the same treatment. Androidās open nature has sadly attracted the unscrupulous masses eager to turn a quick buck ā itās a fact of life for those of us who prefer an open platform.
In any case, Iāve always enjoyed supporting open source software ā the pros certainly outweigh any cons ā and am happy to contribute once again.

Motorola had said its dearest RAZR HD LTE would be coming "later this fall" as an exclusive to Rogers, and today's the day that relatively thin and powerful Android handset hits shelves across the border. Available now for $100 (with the obligatory three-year commitment, of course), the RAZR HD LTE will hand interested Canadians a taste of Ice Cream Sandwich (sorry, no Jelly Bean for now), a 4.7-inch Super AMOLED HD, 720p display and a 1.5GHz, dual-core S4 CPU -- not to mention the ability to surf on Rogers' LTE waves in areas where the network's live. Meanwhile, those who would like to go the "outright" way will have to spend a cool $600 on Moto's Kevlar-sporting slab, but, needless to say, that's the price folks have to pay for walking out the door with a bit of leeway. Usually we'd say you should check out Rogers' website to snag one for yourself, however the site appears to be experiencing some technical difficulties right now -- but, hey, there's always the good ol' brick-and-mortar store.

Reports have been circulating that devices running Android 4.2, rumored to be code-named Key Lime Pie (though it's seeming more likely that it will retain the Jelly Bean moniker), have been popping up in server logs and benchmarks across the web. Well, after doing some digging through our own records, we're seeing quite a few instances of hardware running the unannounced Google platform visiting Engadget. Now, we do feel it necessary to add the caveat that there are some strange reports in our logs as well, coming from hardware allegedly running Android 5.0 and 6.0, but we're not convinced of their authenticity. We are, however, fairly certain that the numerous Galaxy Nexii hitting our site sporting Android 4.2, build JOO90B, are legit. We're also seeing a number of occams, potentially an obtuse reference to the RAZR (a Moto Nexus perhaps?) pinging our servers running the same build. Like others, we're seeing reports of the Arc S running 4.2 as well, but upon further investigation it seems more likely that this is a beta of Jelly Bean 4.1 currently being tested by Sony. Obviously, none of this is official, but it only makes the impending release of a new Nexus or Nexii seem all the more likely.

Apple's production of the brand-new iPhone 5 is being slowed down by quality-control procedures instituted at Foxconn Technology Group, according to a report byBloomberg. The initial line of iPhone 5's were dogged by complaints of nicks and scratches on the aluminum case. The aluminum Apple decided to use for the new smartphone is thinner and lighter, but also harder to handle in production.
"It's a trade-off because aluminum is strong and tougher to break, and it's light and more economical, yet it is also easier to scratch," Jacob Huang, a professor of materials engineering at National Sun Yat-Sen University in Kaohsiung, Taiwan told Bloomberg. "You could use magnesium, which is lighter, but even softer and easier to scratch, or glass which is heavier but harder yet more brittle."
RBC Capital Market analysts cut their Q4 iPhone 5 forecasts from 57 million to 49 million due to the lack of components.
"The iPhone 5 is not easy to put together because it's a minimalist design," Sterne, Agee & Leach Inc. analyst Shaw Wu told Bloomberg. "Apple has a very high standard, where it aims to produce each model to be an exact replica where variance is measured in microns."
"These stricter standards would lower the yield on good products being shipped out," added Fubon Financial Holding Co analyst Jeff Pu. "They'll handle it by increasing labor and machinery, and Apple may even use its cash to buy new equipment to assist Foxconn."

October 10th, 2012, 23:16 Posted By: wraggster
Six iOS developers claim they filed complaints and bug reports in advance of release.
The Apple Maps farrago took everyone by surprise. Everyone that is, except Apple, who knew about the problem before release.
At least, that's what a group of anonymous developers have claimed in an article on CNET.
The six iOS debs say they warned Apple of problems in iOS Maps when they released the first pre-release version in June, giving the company months to fix the issues before the app appeared in iOS 6.
The whistleblowers say they filed bug requests, sent emails to specific Apple staff and commented on message boards only Apple and other developers could see, but all to no avail.
All of the half dozen developers have applications that rely on Apple's maps technology requested that their details were not mentioned in the story because of ongoing relationships with Apple.
However, the developers feel that the app was so bad they had no choice but to break ranks. One said: "I posted at least one doomsayer rant after each (developer) beta, and I wasn't alone.
"The mood amongst the developers seemed to be that the maps were so shockingly bad that reporting individual problems was futile. What was needed wasn't so much an interface for reporting a single point as incorrect, but for selecting an entire region and saying 'all of this - it's wrong.'"
Another developer said he was able to contact an Apple employee, who said a particular issue was "well understood".
While Apple seems to be working on fixing the many issues that have been reported since launch, the question remains, if it knew about it, why wasn't it sorted beforehand?
Apple did not comment on these allegations.

October 10th, 2012, 23:15 Posted By: wraggster
UK CIOs have their say about how the business smartphone landscape will look in 2017.
In a survey conducted by Virgin Media Business, more than a third of CIOs in the UK believe that Apple will eventually gain the upper hand over Samsung in the battle over being the preferred business device.
The 37 per cent who backed Apple were closely followed by 30 per cent who think Samsung Galaxy phones will be the top dogs.
However, ten per cent think that RIM's fortunes will reverse and that the BlackBerry manufacturer will be the dominant player by 2017.
Even more surprising is the fact that two per cent of respondents think that the rumoured (and oft-denied) Facebook smartphone be running the show in five years.
In fact, the non-existent Facebook phone got more support than Sony, who just one per cent of people thought will be the main supplier of smartphones for business come 2017.
Tony Grace, chief operating officer of Virgin Media Business, said: āThereās a huge amount of choice out there for CIOs looking to purchase smartphones, even more so now the iPhone has launched. It can be difficult to work out which model works best with your workforce. Whatās clear is that Apple and Samsung are way ahead of the others at the moment.
āDriving the popularity of these devices is superfast connectivity thatās allowing staff to realise the options available to them with these items of kit.
"Although our survey shows CIOs are firmly backing two manufacturers now, thereās no guarantee thatāll always be the case. A new model might come along and change everything."

Four-inch version of world-beating smartphone will appeal to European consumers who feel the original is too big.
A four-inch version of the Galaxy S III will be released tomorrow in Germany.
Some consumers have expressed an interest in the GS3, but been put off by its size, however this attempt to lure them in may fall flat if the rumours about the smaller device's mid-range specs are accurate.
JK Shin, head of Samsung Mobile Communications, didn't reveal many details about the device, although he said its creation was led by increasing demand for 4-inch devices in Europe.
"We'll be launching a 4-inch Galaxy S III on the 11th in Germany," Shin said. "There's a lot of demand for a 4-inch screen device in Europe. Some call it an entry-level device, but we call it 'mini.'"

A while a go I made gpsp update for the Symbian Belle and Belle Refresh. I learned that for some reason Nokia has changed the memory management a bit, so the new Symbian version will fail when Iām creating my own heaps with RHeap APIās. It seems that the new Symbian is unable to increase the application heap size when creating new heaps. Luckily the fix is rather easy;
I just had to increase the initial amount of Heap reserved by the app startup by increasing the target.EPOCHEAPSIZE in the Qtās .pro file. like this:
1
2 |
//it was somethign small like: symbian:TARGET.EPOCHEAPSIZE = 0x200000 0x1000000
symbian:TARGET.EPOCHEAPSIZE = 0x800000 0x1400000
|
Personally I have no idea why Nokia made any changes to the Symbian kernel at this point, when they have pretty much killed the whole platform. They are just getting broken apps for dying ecosystem. If I wouldnāt have had the Symbian SDK still installed, I wouldnāt have bothered to download the SDK again just to make even a minor update.

Square Enix has become notorious for charging exceptionally high prices for its mobile games - just look at its Ā£19.99 / $29 Final Fantasy Dimensions and Ā£32 / $44 Demons' Score - but the publisher insists that its games offer high quality experiences worthy of their audacious prices. In a recent interview with Kotaku, Square Enix defended this practice stating, "Each game is priced individually and evaluated based on the type of game, depth and overall experience it provides for players. Some of our higher priced titles offer more than 60 plus hours of game time with rich storylines, high quality graphics and challenging, diverse combat."Why does this game cost so much?!
It also noted that these high prices are still cheaper than their original console versions. "We've reconfigured and optimised them for the mobile platform, releasing them at a lower price than their original console or handheld versions," said a Square spokesperson. "Square Enix does provide other casual titles in the lower price range, and as the market evolves, we'll take all different price points into consideration on a game-by-game basis."While these games may be cheaper than their source material, they're still much higher than what western gamers are used to paying for mobile games.Square admitted that this was the case and has tried to adapt its game design to better suite this model. Its Guardian Cross was a free-to-play title and the publisher's only game among the 200 top-grossing apps on the iTunes store."We are aware that the market in North America is accustomed to the lower priced or free to play games. Guardian Cross was our first significant title to utilize the free-to-play pricing model and we've been very happy with the community reaction to the title. The gameplay lent itself very well to the free-to-play pricing model""Moving forward, we're looking forward to the challenge of utilizing our strengths in creativity, world-building, and gameplay mechanics and matching those with a pricing model that are consistent with the market and provides players with a sense of overall value."
