On the anniversary of Steve Jobs' death, reader SternisheFan sends in a story from CNN about how the Apple co-founder's legacy has changed since then."... in the 12 months since, as high-profile books have probed Jobs' life and career, that reputation has evolved somewhat. Nobody has questioned Jobs' seismic impact on computing and our communication culture. But as writers have documented Jobs' often callous, controlling personality, a fuller portrait of the mercurial Apple CEO has emerged. 'Everyone knows that Steve had his "rough" side. That's partially because he really did have a rough side and partially because the rough Steve was a better news story than the human Steve,' said Ken Segall, author of Insanely Simple: The Obsession That Drives Apple's Success.' ... In Steve Jobs, Isaacson crafted a compelling narrative of how Jobs' co-founded Apple with Steve Wozniak, got pushed out of the struggling company a decade later and then returned in the late 1990s to begin one of the most triumphant second acts in the annals of American business. But he also spent many pages chronicling the arrogant, cruel behavior of a complicated figure who could inspire people one minute and demean them the next. According to the book, Jobs would often berate employees whose work he didn't like. He was notoriously difficult to please and viewed people and products in black and white terms. They were either brilliant or 'sh-t.' 'Among Apple employees, I'd say his reputation hasn't changed one bit. If anything, it's probably grown because they've realized how central his contributions were,' Lashinsky said. 'History tends to forgive people's foibles and recognize their accomplishments. When Jobs died, he was compared to Edison and Henry Ford and to Disney. I don't know what his place will be in history 30, 40, 50 years from now. And one year is certainly not enough time (to judge).'"Apple has posted a tribute video on their homepage today.

'Sonic Jump' is the title of a new game coming to mobile platforms.
That's it. That's all Sega has said. "New Sonic Jump coming to mobile soon!". That was the entire announcement.Still, the accompanying image pictured is plenty revealing. It'll have Sonic in it who's likely to some jumping - possibly even as high as the clouds. There'll be some gold rings as well.
So, there you have it. A new jumping Sonic game. For mobiles.
More info when Sega actually choose to reveal some.

Here's a bit of web fun to liven up your weekend: a digital artist by the name of Pritesh Desai has recreated a fully functional first-generation iPod that you can play directly in your browser. In remembrance of Steve Jobs, Desai built the faux iPod using HTML5, CSS3, and a touch of jQuery. You can drag the click wheel around just like with the real deal, change the volume, hit play / pause and even skip tracks. Especially nice is the addition of Extras like the Clock and the Calendar. Unfortunately, you won't be able to play any of your own tunes, but Desai had compiled a list of Creative Commons songs, so you can see how the player works. The next step is for someone to fill this up with hits of the early aughts ("Last Nite" by The Strokes, perhaps?) so you can truly travel back in time to the heydays of Windows XP and the Enron scandal.

The Surface tablet will also be… er…. surfacing.
Microsoft has officially sent out invitations for the launches of Windows 8 on Friday, October 25, and Windows Phone 8 on Monday, October 29.
The Windows 8 event will be held in New York, while the WP8 one is scheduled for San Francisco.
Here at Mobile Entertainment, we've been waiting for Microsoft to seriously join the war for the planet's tablets and smartphones, and now we have a date for when battle will commence.
A Microsoft spokesman says that the Surface tablets will be launched on midnight, October 26th from Microsoft's web site and at Microsoft stores.
Pricing isn't yet known, so we will presumably find out how much the Surface will cost on October 25th. In the summer a rumour appeared suggesting that the Windows RT version of the Surface will cost just $199, while Microsoft CEO Steve Ballmer has previously stated that the sweet spot for tablet pricing is $300-$800.
A variety of Windows Phone 8 devices are expected to be announced at launch (though none are manufactured by Microsoft itself), and there will be two versions of the Surface tablet: the Microsoft Surface (RT) is powered by a ARM related NVIDIA Tegra 3+, taking aim at the iPad and higher-end Android slates, while the Microsoft Surface (8 Pro) model is designed to be a mobile version of a Windows 8 PC.
Earlier this week, we got to play with a Windows 8 tablet and were pleasantly surprised.
Are you interested in Windows Phone 8 and the rumours that Microsoft is producing its own WinPho device? Has the Surface and it's low-key marketing grabbed you? Let us know in the box below.

Late yesterday the Fandroids started wetting themselves over a screenshot that apparently showed an entry in the inventory of UK retailer Carphone Warehouse.
That entry? A 32GB Nexus 7.
Today, the same product has appeared on the sites of a couple of other online retailers, each time labelled as "unavailable" or "out of stock".
Details on the devices are sparse (1.2 GHz Tegra 3 processor, Android 4.1, Bluetooth), although one of the retailers has it priced at $260, just $10 more than the 16GB's RRP.
The timing is right for an updated Nexus 7; it's made an impact, sold a bucketload, and we're just entering the Christmas gift-buying season.
It would also take a little bit of the attention off the iPad Mini when it is announced later this month.
This also ties in with the other rumours that have been circulating that Google is planning on bringing out a 3G Nexus 7 before Christmas.
If you're thinking of buying a Nexus 7, you might want to hang on for a couple of weeks.

October 5th, 2012, 22:03 Posted By: wraggster
On this day in 2011, Steve Jobs died.
Although everyone was aware it was only a matter of time until he succumbed to the pancreatic cancer that had plagued him since 2003, it was still a shock, and the outpouring of grief on websites, social media and even traditional media was stunning in its volume.
Today, thousands upon thousands of tribute articles are piling up on the internet, like binbags on Boxing Day, each one saying the same as the last: "RIP Steve, the world isn't the same without you".
And it's this that led me to think; just how much has Apple changed since Jobs left?
The Apple founder and CEO died on October 5th 2011, but he stepped down as CEO in August 2011 and since then, Apple seems to have lost its way.
Now, whether you agree with Jobs' business practices, behaviour towards others and his status as an innovator, there's one thing that cannot be denied: for more than five years his company dominated the mobile industry, not to mention the way it shook up the music and home computing markets too.
Can the same still be said of Apple today?
The company is certainly as lucrative. New CEO Tim Cook has worked hard to make sure new products continue to roll out and the PR and marketing machine is as relentless as ever.
But is there still that sense of magic?
Think of Apple now, and what's the first thing that comes into your mind? The Apple maps debacle, theunderwhelming iPhone 5, the endless litigation?
It's impossible to say these problems wouldn't exist if Jobs were still here, but it's hard to imagine that the issues would be piling up in the way they are.
Perhaps it's the lack of Jobs' uncanny ability to wave problems away ("You're holding it wrong"), or maybe there is just more focus on Apple now that there are a number of serious rivals, but that aura of invincibility, that specialness, is missing.
Later this month we're going to get the iPad Mini - a device that would not have made it past Jobs. He said that a seven-inch tablet would be "dead on arrival" and that they are "too big to compete with a smartphone and too small to compete with the iPad".
Of course, a company cannot stand still and only ever act in the manner an ex-owner would. That way madness lies. But Tim Cook's eagerness to rush out a smaller iPad and the speed with which rumours of the device leaked, feel all wrong.
Many of these issues smack of "me too". Other companies are doing it, why aren't we? Nokia has its own maps service, why don't we? Google Voice seems cool, let's do Siri. Amazon has a seven-inch tab, we should have a seven-inch tab.
In 2012, Apple doesn't have to release anything groundbreaking to be successful, no matter what, the money will pour in, but that seems at odds with Jobs' way of thinking. Even if the product or feature wasn't innovative, at least he tried to make it appear as if it was.
And now I find myself looking at more of the Steve Jobs tributes, crushing my Twitter feed and clogging up Reddit. Even Apple's getting in on the act and carrying a tribute video on the homepage - I've embedded it below.
It's a classy piece of work, but I can't help but think it's the sort of sentimentalism that Jobs himself would have classed as a waste of time. Get back to work. Why are we focusing on the past when we should be looking at the future?

A survey recently conducted by research firm EEDAR shows nearly 60 per cent of mobile gamers are women.
The survey contained 2,491 respondents ages 15 to 64 who qualified as ‘active’ mobile gamers. The findings, reported by USA Today, revealed women are more likely to play mobile titles than men, especially when it comes to socially-driven multiplayer games.
"What we are finding is tapping into that female client is more important than ever before. It really is changing the face of gaming," EEDAR analyst Jesse Divinich said.
63 per cent of female mobile users play social multiplayer titles, versus 52 per cent of male gamers. Publishers have also come out to reveal titles such as Draw Something, Words With Friends, and Big Fish Casino have userbases comprised of much more women than men.
The findings are a complete flip-flop from what companies are used to seeing on the console side.
"Maybe it was because of the nature of the adoption of technology … what you saw was the growth of a big base of male players. The games catered to them," said Travis Boatman, senior vice president of mobile at Zynga. "But what has changed with these new touch-screen devices is that it has made (games) much more accessible to everybody."
"If you are building for mobile and you want to scale to the broadest possible audience of purchasers, you do need to absolutely focus on [women]," said Big Fish Games CEO Paul Thelen. "You would think Texas Hold 'Em would skew [towards men], but we are seeing 65 per cent of the revenue coming from [women]."

Fans of both Android and Slingbox streaming have had a long wait for a significant update to theSlingPlayer app, to put it mildly -- the last major upgrade was to introduce Kindle Fire support at the start of the year. Imagine our delight when Sling Media posts a pair of low-key but significant updates for Android phone and tablet users alike. Smartphone owners get the most out of the upgrade with a new electronic program guide, a fresher overall look and better high-quality video for any phone using Android 4.0 and beyond. Tablet users do get a more optimized interface for the Nexus 7, however, and both form factors will let avid placeshifters remind themselves when a much-anticipated show goes live in the future. Neither of the updates is a complete revolution, but we would say they're coming just in time.

Eventually, that shiny new iPhone 5 will have to meet its untimely end, whether it's in a landfill or (preferably) a recycling company's machinery. When it does, you'll at least be glad to know that Apple has kept the toxin levels down. HealthyStuff and iFixit have dissected the extra skinny smartphone and put it in the same "low concern" category for potential harm that's normally occupied by phones wearing their green credentials on their sleeves. Lest anyone rush to tell Greenpeace about the feat, just remember that there's a difference between proficiency at excising dangerous chemicals and getting rid of them completely: HealthyStuff still found small traces of bromine, chlorine, lead and mercury in the iPhone 5's construction, which could pose risks if the handset is ever broken apart or melted for scrap. Some concern also exists that the x-ray fluorescence spectrometer doesn't reveal the full extent of any toxic materials. Whether or not these remain sore points for you, the new iPhone is at least easier on the eco-friendly conscience than most of its peers.

Samsung has provided investors guidance ahead of its full Q3 earnings report that's due before October 26th, and as has been the custom, the numbers are huge. It's expecting a fourth straight record quarter with overall operating profits of 8.1 trillion won ($7.28 billion), an amount that would more than doublelast year's results for the same period and up sharply from Q2s $5.86 billion, on sales of 52 trillion won ($46 billion). We'll have to wait for the full report to see numbers broken down by department, but it's safe to say that there's a lot of Galaxy S IIIs (it ticked past 20 million last month) adding up to reach that pinnacle. Reuters and Bloomberg have predictions from various analysts on how many handsets, RAM chips and flat-panel HDTVs were sold, but if its legal battle with Apple ends in the worst-case scenario, at least we figure Samsung will have enough left over to keep the lights on.

Earlier this morning, Google did the iOS crowd a generous favor by flipping the switch on its Street Viewservice to help alleviate some of those Maps troubles, so it's only natural to take care of the Android faithful as well. With that in mind, Google has updated its Gesture Search to be fully compatible with the ASUS-built Nexus 7, as well as improving the application's UI, boosting search performance, adding support for more languages and allowing contacts without digits to now be searchable. The new version of Gesture Search can be downloaded now via Google Play, straight from your device or by simply using the link down below.

Sales of Galaxy S III smartphones have increased since the $1.05bn court case
Analytics firm Localytics has found that demand for Samsung's flagship phone is increasing despite the company losing a patent war against Apple and the release of the iPhone 5.
Localytics says it has seen a nine per cent average increase of new Galaxy S III devices since the first week of August, while the number of new Galaxy S IIIs increased by 16 per cent during the Apple patent trial verdict and 15 per cent during the week thatApple announced the iPhone 5.
It seems that, far from crushing Samsung's momentum, the high-profile lawsuit was good PR for the South Korean company and implanted a key thought into the public's mind: "If Apple think this device is similar and a threat, but it costs much less, why don't I buy that instead?"
That's the kind of consumer programming that money can't buy. Well… unless you have $1.05 billion.

The iOS version of the infamously violent Carmageddon should be available for download next week, Stainless Games tells us. Founders Patrick Buckland and Neil 'Nobby' Barnden say they've submitted the racer to the App Store, and pending Apple's approval it arrives sometime next week. The Android version, however, remains in development and won't hit until around late 2012/early 2013.
While the port remains faithful, it's also tweaked for iOS beyond a slight visual uplift. The controls are very flexible, with touch pads for pedals and steering able to placed anywhere across the screen, and tilt controls are supported as well. There's also the integrated ability to share videos of your greatest maims on YouTube and Facebook. Stainless tells us it's tried to make the 1997 game more accessible for a modern audience, including making specific tweaks to the opening levels to help new players through a little easier. There is, though, a range of difficulties to keep those hailing from in their driving seats. Multiplayer is sadly absent, but Stainless promises it's a big part of the upcoming Carmageddon: Reincarnation.
We asked Patrick and Neil if they were tempted to tweak the iOS version to bring it up to an 18 rating (it's been rated as a PEGI 12). The pair laughed that they weren't with "this game," implying they may well be with the upcomingReincarnation. As Stainless promised in the Reincarnation Kickstarter, the game will be free for the first 24 hours of its release, costing $1.99 after that.

No one ever said a modded MacBook Pro was gonna be cheap. Last week Modbook announced that it would be going ahead with pre-orders on the Modbook Pro today, but didn't really touch on pricing. As ordering begins, the company's attached a $3,500 starting price tag for the honor of controlling your 13.3-inch Mac with a pen. The Modbook Pro, which is set to start shipping in the middle of next month, runs Mountain Lion and features a 2.5GHz Intel Core i5 processor (upgradable to a 2.9GHz i7) and memory and storage up to 16GB and 480GB, respectively. If you're aching to get your hands on one of these Frankensteinian tablets, you'll have to plunk down a $500 deposit.

Asian factories have begun manufacturing the long-rumoured iPad Mini, it is claimed.
The Wall Street Journal reports that the still unconfirmed device has a 7.85-inch display with an as of yet unspecified resolution, although it is lower than the Retina display found in the iPad 3.
Apple will position the device as a rival to newcomers such as Google’s Nexus 7 and Amazon’s Kindle Fire series, both of which are significantly cheaper than the iPad.
The iPad as we know will continue, too, with the aim of maintaining Apple’s iron grip on the luxury tablet sector.
Talk of the iPad Mini is nothing new. In fact, we think we’ve even seen pictures of it. An October launch for the device was being touted as far back as May of this year.
