It's hard not to be impressed by the A6 engine in the new iPhone 5, since it's now proven to deliver a double-shot of great performance and class-leading battery life. But silicon stories like that don't happen over night or even over the course of a year -- in fact, analyst Linley Gwennap has traced the origins of the A6 all the way back to 2008, when Steve Jobs purchased processor design companyP.A. Semi and set one of its teams to work on creating something "insanely great" for mobile devices.
Although Apple is steadfastly secretive about its components, Gwennap's history of the A6 (linked below) is both plausible and a straight-up good read for anyone interested in the more fundamental aspects of their gadgets. Whereas the A5 processor stuck closely to ARM's Cortex-A9 design, Gwennap is convinced -- just like Anandtech is --that the A6 treads a very different path: it's still based on ARM's architecture and it's likely fabricated by Samsung using a cutting-edge 32nm process, but it's an in-housevision of what a mobile chip should be. It's the culmination of four years of hard work and perhaps half a billion dollars of investment.
That's not to say it's the most powerful chip out there, or even the chip most tailored to its host device -- after all, Samsung also designs great chips for some of its own smartphones. Indeed, Gwennap says that the A6 is probably a dual-core processor that is no more complex than Qualcomm's Snapdragon S4 (let alone the S4 Pro) or the forthcoming generation of Cortex-A15 chips, while its clock speed could be as low as 1.2GHz -- versus a 1.6GHz quad-core Exynos in the Note II and even a 2GHz Intel chip in Motorola's new RAZR i. However, Gwennap predicted that even if the A6 falls short of its rivals "in raw CPU performance," it'd make up for it in terms of low power consumption -- which is precisely what we've confirmed in our review.

HTC is making a two-pronged attack on Windows Phone 8, and while it may not match up to the specs on its new flagship, the Windows Phone 8S by HTC (yes, that's the official moniker) has some charm all of its own. The screen is a pretty underwhelming Gorilla Glass-coated 4-inch WVGA LCD, with a similarly middleweight 5-megapixel camera peering out from the other side. Given that it's looking to be priced closer to the One V than the One S, we're not all that surprised. The phone itself is a good-looking slab, thanks to the breezy color schemes and while the build is certainly solid enough, we'd be hard-pressed to put it in league with the 8X, which felt at home in our hand from the start. The 8S is cocooned in a matte plastic finish, arriving in four different color options -- depending on carrier and territory.
The two-tone color scheme, aside from a few color licks around the lens and ear piece, keeps the second color limited to the bottom edge and the detachable cap. This offers access to the microSD slot (upgrading the built-in 4GB of storage up to 32GB), but like the 8X, no access to the battery. Yep, these new Windows Phones look nothing like HTC's One series, and while the same design studio is responsible, this time, it took its inspiration from Microsoft's tile interface. There's a dual-core 1GHz Snapdragon S4 processor inside, but the phone wasn't quite ready to be put completely through its paces. While the software was still locked down, you can take a video tour -- and read more of our hardware impressions -- after the break.

Cupertino's newest hardware may have us purring, but Apple hasn't left those of us with existing hardware out in the cold. iOS 6 should be appearing as an available update right now, or at least very shortly -- depending on how taxed those servers get. It'll be compatible with every iPhone since the 3GS, iPod touch 4G / 5G and this-and-last-year's vintage of the iPad. Given the inexorable march of technology, some of the newer features won't work on the older devices, but you can use ourcompatability checker to determine what new things you'll be able to do in the next few hours.
We've had notes from our tipsters that the update is arriving a few minutes early (with photographic proof above), but so far we've had nothing here.

Remember how the BBC was asking Adobe to keep Flash for Android on life support for a short while? The broadcaster just removed any doubts as to why with the launch of BBC Media Player, its solution for that day when the mobile plugin is well and truly buried. Starting with iPlayer on the mobile web and moving on to both radio as well as an updated version of the Android app due next week, the BBC will be using close Flash cousin Adobe AIR for streaming playback on Android phones and tablets. It can't quit Flash technology cold turkey given the sheer number of devices still running Gingerbread or earlier, which rules out HTTP Live Streaming for now. Media Player isn't necessarily the most elegant solution -- we're seeing reports of sub-par video and other hiccups -- but it will keep those episodes of Doctor Whorolling on most Android hardware and let the BBC push out updates that address as many of the Google-inclined as possible.

Why the new iPod Touch is a better bet than a downsized iPad, plus the Digital Foundry take on the iPhone 5 reveal
In the wake of the launch of the ultra-cheap Google Nexus 7 and the Amazon Kindle Fire HD, many were wondering when Apple would be releasing its own mini-tablet to take on the new pretenders - the so-called iPad mini. The funny thing is that the Cupertino superpower did just that last week - but not many people appear to have actually noticed.
"The revival of the iPod Touch is Apple's response to the arrival of cheap 7-inch iPad competitors, with a price-point that seems to rule out the arrival any time soon for an iPad mini"
The fact of the matter is that Apple already has its own miniaturised iPad - the iPod Touch - and the timing and pricing of the new model announced last week strongly suggests that this could well be the entirety of the Cupertino superpower's response to the two-pronged Android offensive from Google and Amazon.
The make-up of the new device is intriguing - a mixture of core components from the iPhone 4S and the new iPhone 5, remixed into an enticing, if perhaps pricey package. Processor-wise, Apple falls back on its established A5 architecture, marrying dual core ARM Cortex A9s with a PowerVR SGX543MP2 - the firm suggesting that the new model is good for 40 hours of music playback, or eight hours of video on a single charge. This suggests that the 32nm version of the A5, as seen in the revised iPad 2, also gets an outing here.
The newly upgraded Retina display appears to be a match for the new screen found on the iPhone 5 - retaining the 640 pixel horizontal resolution found on the existing fourth gen iPod Touch, but enlarged vertically from 960 to 1136 pixels. Apple's pitch here is that the device is still small enough to be used in one hand, but the additional 18 per cent of resolution makes for easier consumption of web media, with the 16:9 aspect ratio a perfect fit for much of the latest video content from iTunes.
It can easily be argued that a sub-HD 4-inch display - no matter how densely packed with pixels, or how vivid the colours are - can match the real estate offered by the 7-inch 1280x800 displays found on the Nexus 7 or Fire HD, but Apple's response appears to be to turn this apparent weakness into a strength, by putting a strong emphasis on tech that's completely missing from its rivals in other areas.

Looks to HTML5 to move away from its dependence on Google OS.
Chinese vendor ZTE has done well with its Android-powered devices and ranks as the second largest OEM in the country.
It has high aspirations and boasts grand plans of hiring thousands of new staff members and reaching 100m smartphone shipments by 2015, but Android will not be the key.
ZTE has aligned with Firefox creator Mozilla for its forthcomingHTML5-based OS which will power a number of future devices, according to Bloomberg.
He Shiyou, exec VP, ZTE, said: "We will not rely on only one operating system."
He says the OS will be available in the December quarter and the decision comes to lessen its ties to the crowded Android market, a decision Nokia made with Windows Phone, a platform also used by ZTE

Terrifying or fantastic, depending on what kind of retailer you are.
New research by by Deloitte Digital found 46 per cent of UK smartphone owners have used their device to research product info before or during a shopping trip.
It concluded that the practice influences six per cent of in-store retail sales.
Clearly, mobile research will lead to some shoppers walking out the door and going somewhere else - or buying the item from a mobile site.
But the habit can also be harnessed by more enterprising retailers to push location aware offers and communications to the same customers.
Highlighting this opportunity, the study found that 74 per cent of shoppers that visited a retailer's mobile website or app during their most recent shopping trip made a purchase, compared with 66 per cent that did not.
It's also the case that more consumers are using mobile to enable physical purchases than to buy from the phone itself.
Deloitte says the value of direct purchases made through phones will be £8 billion in 2012.
It also estimates that 15 to 18 per cent of in-store sales will be smartphone-influenced by 2016, equivalent to sales of up to £43 billion.
Colin Jeffrey, head of multichannel retail at Deloitte Digital, said: "We would expect smartphones to increasingly be used as a transactional device in the future. The increased adoption of contactless payment technology will act to accelerate the influence of mobile.
"Retailers need to plan for a world where banks of till points are no longer required and prepare to fully exploit the opportunities that mobile presents."

InnoGames has just added new features and improvements to its classic strategy game, Tribal Wars. The biggest changes are found in the mobile version of the game, where InnoGames improved the user interface for mobile devices (mainly with touch screens) by lowering the number of menus and adding more mobile-friendly graphics. At the same time, InnoGames has decided to open the previously premium only mobile version to all players Tribal Wars fans simply have to visitwww.tribalwars.net via their mobile browser and will be redirected afterwards.
The improvements in the mobile version are a result of InnoGames’ higher mobile focus in general. The company’s developers are currently working on native apps for Tribal Wars and Grepolis. InnoGames has also recently added improvements to the browser version of the title, including a full-screen mode Tribal Wars map and improved farm assistant. The update has already been launched on www.tribalwars.net, www.tribalwars.uk and www.staemme.ch, Tribal Wars Switzerland. The remaining versions will follow next week.
Tribal Wars places the player as leader of a small village, striving for power and glory. In order to build a strong empire and conquer other villages, one must unite with powerful allies and found a mighty tribe. Its vast game worlds and varied tactical opportunities make Tribal Wars one of the most popular browser-based games in the world, with 45 million registered users playing it in over 30 languages.
