Starting in 2009, Kris Sanchez’ UberFacts quickly gained followers on Twitter thanks to its funny, unexpected and out-of-the-ordinary factoids. It now sits at almost 3 million followers. Crickler 2: Daily Word Puzzle has hit #1 in both Free Puzzle Game and Free Educational Game categories in the App Store. The original Crickler, a web game carried by 40 newspapers worldwide, was created by Michael Crick—a veteran game designer and son of Nobel Prize winner Sir Francis Crick. "It's great to bring UberFacts to the best crossword game on the iPhone,” says Kris Sanchez, founder, UberFacts. “Now iPhone players can enjoy UberFacts and have fun solving these puzzles!"
The UberFacts agreement illustrates how Crickler serves as an innovative channel for those interested in being featured in a top-rated iPhone app. Case in point: PlayScreen has already started to run special contests that reward players who have solved UberFacts-powered puzzles with $50 iTunes gift cards. To win, players need to share their achievements on Twitter and follow UberFacts’ account – “closing the loop” and ensuring a high level of user engagement for all parties.
"UberFacts provides some of the most amazing content out there, leading to some impressive Crickler puzzles . Trivia aficionados will find these puzzles challenging and totally addictive,” says William Volk, CCO, PlayScreen. “More so, this deal opens the door to a future where TV shows rely on Crickler to deepen the connection with their audience—and where charities use Cricklerpuzzles to raise awareness around important social and health issues. The possibilities are endless.”
Crickler 2: Daily Word Puzzlecan be downloaded for free from the App Store. Players start with 30 credits, which are used every time a new puzzle is chosen. More credits can be purchased in-game—or earned by watching Tapjoy ads or bragging about their Crickler victories on Twitter and Facebook.

iOS developer Jiang Zhi may have worked out how to sneak a copyright-defying Super Mario clone onto the App Store: make no reference to anything Nintendo-related in its title.Hence, presumably, 3D Cartoon Land: Safari. It's a fairly inocuous-sounding name, although a quick glance at the game's screenshots exposes its true, evil roots.
Koopa Troopers are remodeled as "angry tortoises", while Goombas resemble small shuffling pinecones. The Mushroom Kingdom's trademark "?" blocks are now "!" blocks. Mario himself has the dead eyes and stiff, poorly-animated arms of a brightly-coloured cadaver."Very simply yet very addicting, this unique game requires you to quickly jump over obstacles and collect coins," the game's official description reads."But you are not secure in this beautiful cartoon world. An angry tortoise could bite you. An easy and smooth control makes it very funny and to jump or run."It's not the first time a Nintendo game has been cloned on the iOS app store. Thousands of gamers downloaded a fake version of Pokémon Yellow last year, while Mario Kart rip-offMole Kart was left available for weeks.3D Cartoon Land: Safari costs just 96p. We encourage you not to download it.

The iCloud's web interface has been updated with a new drop-down notification bar. Alongside badge notifications, it offers up browser-based notifications across Mail, Calendar, Reminders and Find My Phone -- which still remains powered by Google Maps, for now. An earlier update also bundled Notes and reminders into the web app, both mimicking the looks of their iPad versions. Now we just need a big enough reason to keep iCloud's site constantly open.

While folks are waiting for their precious new iPhones to arrive on their doorsteps, word has it that the leaky iPad mini has unsurprisingly entered mass production, but with a twist. According to today's front page news on Taiwan's Economic Daily News, reports from two local securities firms claim thatPegatron's managed to nab a staggering 50 to 60 percent of iPad mini orders from Apple, meaningFoxconn is finally no longer the sole assembler of iPads. Together (plus component suppliers Foxlink,AUO, TPK and others), both companies will apparently be able to churn out up to 5 million iPad minis monthly.
Then there's the iPhone 5 as well: the paper says at least 53 million units are expected to be shipped this year, therefore Apple's adding Pegatron to the assembling front line as early as Q4 in order to maintain a steady supply of products. Obviously we can't use this information alone to deduce whether Apple is moving away from Foxconn, but as long as people get their iDevices then it's all dandy.

New stats from GfK reflect the unstoppable rise of the smartphone – especially those with cameras in them.
GfK estimates around four out of five mobile or smartphones sold around the world have a built-in camera.
It says that sales of models with a resolution above five megapixels rose from 17 per cent in the first half of 2011 to 27 per cent a year later.
In Europe, these devices represent around 40 per cent of all phones sold.
The driving force behind these shipments is the ability to upload images from anywhere into social networks – and this makes them more attractive than regular standalone digital cameras.
A similar impulse is driving sales of devices with HD video. During the second quarter of 2012, one in six smartphones in Europe had this technology. A year earlier, the share was under three per cent.
On a more general basis, GfK, says more than 650 million smartphones have been sold, up 50 per cent year-on-year. Devices costing more than €150 now account for 80 per cent of global mobile phone sales.
The trend is obviously more advanced in the US and Europe, but new markets are catching up.
in Latin America, for example, during the first six months of this year, one in five mobile phones bought was a smartphone. This compared with one in seven in 2011.

September 17th, 2012, 19:57 Posted By: wraggster
Ad network BuzzCity, which specialises in serving ads to users in emerging markets, has just released its latest quarterly survey. And it proves emphatically that the world's new web browsers are surfing from mobile devices.
It found 85 per cent of those surveyed prefer to use a mobile to browse the internet, and that 11 per cent use their mobiles for surfing at home instead of PCs.
Where possible they are surfing with multiple devices. Six per cent also surf with PC and 0.48 per cent with tablets.
This trend should accelerate as 27 per cent plan to buy a PC and 11 per cent a tablet within the next 12 months.
Dr KF Lai, CEO of BuzzCity, said: “Our latest user survey has brought to the fore how integral mobiles are to consumers lives today – regardless of age or occupation. There is a strong preference for mobiles as the personal device that is connected 24/7, and that complements the PC or tablet experience.
"So for marketers to take advantage of this consumer behaviour we would recommend considering all of these multiple platforms when it comes to campaigns and products, however keep in mind mobile first.”
By the end of August 2012 the BuzzCity network had served 131.5 billion banners, which surpassed its figure for whole of 2011 (126 billion).
The BuzzCity user survey questioned 10,800 people across 71 countries.

Doubling the efforts of the 4S.
iPhone 5 is the tech buzzword of the moment, and Apple says the device notched up more than two million pre-orders in a day.
It doubles the one million strong advanced demand for the iPhone 4S and more than triples the 600,000 iPhone 4 pre-orders.
Demand is currently exceeding the initial supply and many devices aren't likely to arrive to buyers until October, despite a September 21st release date.
Philip Schiller, senior VP of worldwide marketing, Apple, said: "iPhone 5 pre-orders have shattered the previous record held by iPhone 4S and the customer response to iPhone 5 has been phenomenal.
"iPhone 5 is the best iPhone yet, the most beautiful product we’ve ever made, and we hope customers love it as much as we do.”
The jury is out on whether Apple can maintain its popularity with such little innovation, but the hunger for the fruity devices seems to be insatiable at the moment.

Will next year's Mobile World Congress see the unveiling of Samsung's new flagship smartphone?
The Samsung Galaxy S4 could appear earlier than expected, according to an article in the Korea Times.
The story quotes an unnamed Samsung official who says the South Korean company is ready to unveil the S4 at next year’s Mobile World Congress (MWC) in Barcelona, 25-28 February. It will then be on sale by March.
It's rumoured that the Galaxy S4 will have a large 5-inch display (larger than the S3's 4.8-inch screen) and will again run Android.
An employee at one of Samsung’s local parts suppliers told the Korea Times: “The S4 will see some external changes but retain its popular rectangular shape with rounded corner concept.’’
The source also said the device would "definitely use’’ 4G LTE networks.
Samsung leaking exciting news in the middle of Apple's iPhone 5 party? It's almost as if this has been done on purpose…

September 17th, 2012, 02:24 Posted By: wraggster
It's not about the spec, it's all about the experience - that's the message we came away with from this week's iPhone 5 reveal. Vague on actual detail about the core innards of its new mobile, Apple's emphasis was on a phone that's obviously bigger but at the same time thinner and lighter, twice as fast as its year-old predecessor, and engineered to a level of precision measured down to the micron. This was Apple doing what it does best: creating a desirable product that excites the mainstream while at the same time generating a state approaching mania among its hardcore fans. How else can we explain the cries and whoops of delight that accompanied the reveal of a new docking connector and sync cable?Bearing in mind that the firm had little in the way of new information to impart that hadn't already been revealed weeks - if not months - previously by the rumour mill, Apple did remarkably well in its presentation. There's not actually much here we didn't know already. The biggest change to the form factor is the height of the new screen; iPhone's Retina display has been extended height-wise to accommodate a new widescreen display, with an 1136x640 resolution taking over from the previous 960x640 screen of the iPhone 4 and 4S. The intention here is to make it easy for users still to operate the phone in one hand, while at the same time making for easier web-browsing and the support of 16:9 media content. There is also talk of superior colour reproduction, and a closer adherence to the full sRGB colour gamut as we saw in the new iPad.The company's focus was to ensure that its customer base knew that the larger screen wouldn't make for an unwieldy phone, as is sometimes the case with the more outsize Android offerings, hence Apple.com's outsize factoids hammering home that the new phone is 18 per cent thinner, 20 per cent lighter and 12 per cent smaller in terms of volume compared to the 4S. Elsewhere, the focus was on delivering an even more refined user-experience: WiFi gets a speedier upgrade, the 4G LTE functionality added to the "new iPad" gets ported over, and the general business of navigating iOS certainly seems to be significantly improved. But in terms of the actual technological improvements within that precision-quality casing, Apple gave away less information than it ever has before - an intriguing move bearing in mind that the firm had it all to prove at this presentation after a less than stellar response to last year's 4S.A few weeks back, we wondered where the Cupertino giant would take the iPhone technology in this new revision. In previous years, the solution has been extremely straightforward: port across that year's iPad processor lock, stock and barrel and downclock it by 20 per cent in order to retain decent battery life. However, with this year's A5X, Apple's options were limited: simply in terms of die-size, the new iPad chip is enormous and its entire purpose in being is to service the mammoth 2048x1536 resolution of the tablet's new Retina display. Fabricated at 45nm, A5X is also somewhat power-hungry, in part explaining a battery pack that offers capacity significantly in excess of the MacBook Air's. Only a shrink down to 32nm - a process Apple had already carried out with the A5 in iPad 2 - in combination with the usual downclock could make A5X suitable for a mobile phone. Even then, would a 2x GPU boost alone be enough to sell a premium phone to an audience expecting a vastly revised product after the iterative 4S?

September 16th, 2012, 21:06 Posted By: wraggster
Not sure how this slipped under our radar, but recently Oppo Mobile CEO Chen Mingyong teased that his upcoming flagship phone, the Find 5, will again feature a non-removable but "certainly big enough" battery (for the sake of anti-counterfeiting and, consequently, safety) as well as a 1080p, 441ppi display. That's right, 441ppi! We're finally getting a phone with a display that's impossibly sharper than the 326ppi on the latest iPhones (up to 4-inch, 1,136 x 640), the 331ppi on the Nokia Lumia 920 (4.5-inch, 1,280 x 768) or even the 342ppi on the Sony Xperia acro S and the Xiaomi Phone 2 (4.3-inch, 1,280 x 720).
Assuming Chen's talking about a 1,920 x 1,080 resolution, a quick calculation based on these two numbers would give us a 5-inch screen size, which matches what LG Display announced back in May. Taking into account that a reliable source of ours got to see HTC's 5-inch 6435LVW phablet recently, this would make the Find 5 unofficially the second device to receive the same full HD panel. Still, there's a significant difference inside these two phones: Chen had previously mentioned that the Find 5 will be joining the quad-core APQ8064 party, while the HTC device appears to sport the dual-core, LTE-enabled MSM8960. Speaking of which, the same source informed us that much like the Flyer, HTC's 6435LVW will also feature N-trig stylus technology. Will Oppo follow in the same footsteps? And will it bring back the slide-out keyboard * la Find X903 (pictured above)? Go on, Mr. Chen, tell us more.

Unsurprisingly, Apple left us in the dark regarding some specifics of the iPhone 5 upon its release. Thankfully, the good folks over at Anandtech have done a bit of digging into those numbers you see bordering Apple's Apple A6 SoC, definitively figuring out that Cupertino's latest phone packs in a total 1GB of Samsung-sourced memory. The site clocks the DRAM inside at 1,066Mhz, noting that it's comprised of "two 512MB dies in a dual-channel LPDDR2 package with 32 bits per channel." Further,Anandtech lists the the speed of the iPhone 5's memory at 8,528MB/sec -- an ample 33 percent boost over the 6,400MB/sec rating for the RAM in the iPhone 4S, but well below the 12,800 MB/sec needed to drive the new iPad's bandwidth-hungry screen resolution.
Beyond that, the site believes that the A6 is Apple's first truly in-house creation, as it's using math units too new to be found in a ARM Cortex-A9 architecture (like the A5 or A5X) but reportedly isn't a match for the soon-to-be-released Cortex-A15. If true, the implication is significant -- it suggests Apple is taking the more aggressive path of a chip designer like Qualcomm and custom-tailoring large parts of its processor designs to get the speed it wants on a more exacting schedule. That's a quick summation of the details; hit up the source links below if you want the explanation in full geek speak.

another random user writes with news of a patent application from Microsoft that details a method for silencing your phone by giving it a whack. "There are a variety of circumstances under which it may be desirable to quickly control a device without having to interact with a traditional user interface. For example, often mobile device users forget to set their mobile devices in a silent or vibrate mode and the device rings or makes sounds at an inopportune moment." And yes, 'whack' is the technical term used in the patent (20120231838): "receiving information indicative of acceleration of the mobile communications device; determining correlation between the information indicative of acceleration of the mobile communications device and exemplar whack event data; and based at least on the correlation, controlling an audio signal of the mobile communications device." This method is not recommended for controlling the audio output of animals or children.

Apple regularly likes to kickstart major launches with early retail openings, and it's just confirmed that the natural order of things is intact: both its own stores as well as those for AT&T, Sprint and Verizon will open at 8AM local time on September 21st to take iPhone 5 sales from anyone who missed out on thepre-order rush. As for how well those pre-orders have gone so far? Apple's statement on the subject doesn't give us concrete numbers at this stage, but it certainly hints at an upbeat outlook:
