Apple faces warranty investigation

The European Commission has called for members to look into claims that Apple has failed to inform its customers of their right to product warranties.
Consumers across Europe have long complained that Apple has pushed its own product care services in favour of statutory protections, which they are entitled to by law.
Europe's Justice Commissioner Viviane Reding has asked member states to investigate into the claims and ensure that Apple is clearly offering mandatory two-year minimum warranties to its customers.
Apple states that its service provides customers with different protections.
It would not be the first time Apple found themselves in hot water over consumer rights, as the firm was fined £750,000 by Italian competition authorities back in 2011 as it was decided they had done too little to notify users of their rights under EU consumer laws.

Microsoft working on its own Windows Phone 8 smartphone?

Suppliers based in China have confirmed that Microsoft has been working on its own Windows Phone handset for the last four months and is ready to unleash the beast early next year.
If true, then the development of the 'Surface Phone', suggests that Microsoft isn't entirely comfortable putting all its eggs in the baskets of others.
New Nokia WinPho devices are due to arrive shortly, alongside Samsung's ATIV S and the HTC 8X and 8S.
What can Microsoft bring to the party that Nokia, Samsung and HTC can't? Who knows, but it surprised everyone with the Surface tablet (reports on which are positive, so far), and goodness knows no-one else is making WinPho sexy.
It's not then a huge leap to imagine a scenario where Microsoft has full vertical integration, like Apple. It's a brave new world, ladies and gentlemen.

Spam texters to be fined £250,000

The Information Commissioner’s Office is planning to fine two individuals over £250,000 for sending millions of spam texts.
After gathering intelligence for months, the UK data protection and privacy watchdog is ready to use new-found powers to issue its first fine for spam texting.
Details on the two individuals facing the huge fines could not be provided as they still have 28 days to prove they are not guilty. Sources say it is very unlikely that the accused parties will be able to do so.
Another eight companies are also being investigated further and have been warned they may face further action unless they can prove that they are not breaking the law.
The ICO can fine individuals or companies sending spam texts as much as £500,000.
Simon Entwistle, director of operations at the ICO, said: "This is an important step that shows those who blatantly break the law will be in line for a sizeable six figure penalty from the ICO.
“We know that many of the companies making illegal marketing calls and sending spam texts try to operate below the radar, however we have been analysing information from relevant bodies, such as the TPS [Telephone Preference Service], as well as our own complaints figures in order to identify the most complained about companies.

Ouya names Roy Bahat chairman of the board

Former IGN president joins console start-up, says hardware business has become "1,000 times less expensive" to get into
Ouya is filling out its ranks as the company moves closer to the planned March launch of its eponymous Kickstarted console. The company today announced that it has appointed a chairman of the board, as well as key lead roles in its software and engineering teams.
Ouya's newly appointed chairman is Roy Bahat, former IGN president and an original investor in the outfit. Bahat also previously worked with Ouya CEO Julie Uhrman at IGN, where she was the company's head of digital distribution and business development. He is currently a member of GameStop's digital advisory council and lectures on media at the University of California Berkeley.
Speaking with VentureBeat, Bahat said that advances in manufacturing and a groundswell of support for the idea behind Ouya have significantly lowered the barriers to entry in the console hardware business.
"People assume it can't be done unless you spend billions," he told the site. "But then things change, and it can become 1,000 times less expensive to get into a new business. I think that is what is happening here. Ouya noticed that and acted on it."
Beyond Bahat, Ouya also named Steve Chamberlin as its new head of engineering, and Raffi Bagdasarian as its software product lead. Chamberlin previously worked on Rift for Trion Worlds and the Tiger Woods franchise for EA, while Bagdasarian led development on Crackle at Sony Pictures Television.
Finally, the company said that more than 1,000 developers have inquired about working on Ouya since the end of the Kickstarter campaign last month, and it has received formal applications from more than 50 distributors interested in releasing the console internationally.

Apple’s boss has issued an open letter to customers apologising for the iOS 6 Maps saga. For those not in the know, the latest version of Apple’s mobile OS ditches Google popular Maps app in favour of Apple’s new alternative.
The problem is, iOS 6 Maps is littered with errors and lacks a significant amount of detail found in Google’s established alternative.

To our customers,

At Apple, we strive to make world-class products that deliver the best experience possible to our customers. With the launch of our new Maps last week, we fell short on this commitment. We are extremely sorry for the frustration this has caused our customers and we are doing everything we can to make Maps better.

We launched Maps initially with the first version of iOS. As time progressed, we wanted to provide our customers with even better Maps including features such as turn-by-turn directions, voice integration, Flyover and vector-based maps. In order to do this, we had to create a new version of Maps from the ground up.

There are already more than 100 million iOS devices using the new Apple Maps, with more and more joining us every day. In just over a week, iOS users with the new Maps have already searched for nearly half a billion locations. The more our customers use our Maps the better it will get and we greatly appreciate all of the feedback we have received from you.

Roy Bahat appointed Ouya chairman

Two industry vets hired to lead software development for crowd funded console

Ouya has appointed Roy Bahat as chairman of the company behind the crowdfunded hackable console, and hired Steve Chamberlin and Raffi Bagdasarian to fill key roles in software development.
This is the first news released by the company since the close of the Kickstarter campaign, which shattered records by raising $8.6 million.

A company spokesperson told Develop that since the close of the campaign "more than 1,000" game developers have reached out to the company, and over fifty distributers have inquired about bringing the console to international markets.
Ouya is filtering through these applications to determine partners.
UC Berkeley lecturer and former Rhodes scholar Roy Bahat served for five years as President of IGN entertainment and sat on several startup boards.

98 per cent of tablet-based web browsing is done on Apple iPad

Onswipe has released a study revealing that the iPad accounts for nearly all web traffic originating from tablets.
The study found that Apple’s tablet represented 98.1 per cent of 29.5 million unique impressions over 1200 sites from September 13th – 20th 2012.
The iPad stormed into first place with a huge margin between itself and second place winner Samsung Galaxy Tab, which got a mere 1.53 per cent.
Motorola’s Xoom managed only 0.21 per cent of tablet-based traffic, Amazon’s Kindle Fire came fourth with 0.11 per cent and Asus tablets made up only 0.6 per cent of traffic.
Onswipe’s results reveal that iPad users spent 56.9 per cent more time per web surfing session that iPhone owners. iPad’s 54.5 per cent share of total mobile web traffic is more than double the iPhone’s share of 19.05 per cent.
Apple’s iOS owns 75.12 per cent of total mobile content consumption across Onswipe’s monitored network, with Android taking 22.3 per cent and all others having just 2.5 per cent of the market.

Ratrod Studio Inc. Launches Drift Mania Championship 2 On iOS And Android

Ratrod Studio Inc. proudly announces the arrival of its latest mobile racing game, Drift Mania Championship 2, on iOS and Android. A sequel to the over 10 million player strong Drift Mania franchise,Drift Mania Championship 2 delivers the ultimate drift racing experience with highly addictive gameplay and next generation graphics. Speeding through a series of lifelike raceways, Drift Mania Championship 2 challenges players’ combined driving skills, style, and showmanship in a series of epic racing tournament. Speed, talent, and style, Drift Mania Championship 2 is all about loss of the rear wheel traction while keeping the race car in total control.

Developed in collaboration with DMCC, the only professional drifting series in Canada, and officially sponsored by NOS Energy Drink, Drift Mania Championship 2 tests players’ drifting expertise against the four main criteria of speed, line, angle, and impact. Players can qualify on the podium to unlock different circuits and cars and upgrade their ride by installing aftermarket performance products from licensed brands including Royal Purple, K&N, Magnaflow, Centerforce, Whiteline and Mishimoto. Featuring a soundtrack from A’n’R Music Limited that includes songs from Templeton Pek and KNGDMS, players can also listen to songs from their own music library as they take the lead and cross the finish line.
