Samsung has decided to terminate an ongoing contract with Apple to supply LCD panels for use in its growing range of devices. That means, come next year, there will be no Samsung panels used across the iPad, iPod, iPhone, and Mac range of devices. The reason seems to be two-fold. On the one hand, Apple has been working hard to secure supplies from other manufacturers and therefore decrease its reliance on Samsung. On the other, Apple is well-known for demanding and pushing lower pricing, meaning it just doesn't make business sense anymore for Samsung to keep supplying Apple with displays."

Borderlands Legends will be available for iOS devices before the end of October.
Gearbox Studios' hugely popular Borderlands franchise is heading to mobile devices.
An ad spotted in the Borderlands 2 digital strategy guide alerted fans to the existence of Borderlands Legends, which will be available on iPhone and iPad by the end of the month.
Borderlands Legends hasn't been officially announced yet, but from the information available so far, it doesn't sound like the game will be available on iPod TOuch, which suggests the game will need plenty of power, and may restrict devices further to the new iPad and iPhones 4S and 5.
Legends will feature Brick, Mordecai, Lilith and Roland from the first game as playable characters and promises thousands of weapons to collect, a āstrategic cover systemā, and ārandomised missionsā.
A major franchise like this coming to mobile devices is yet another sign of just how much potential studios are seeing in mobile gaming.

In 1981, Bud Tribble, VP of software technology at Apple used the term 'reality distortion field' to describe Steve Jobs' Jedi-esque ability to cloud minds and enforce his will.
If Steve handed out a project that should take a year but wanted it ready within two months, he used the RDF to convince developers that it was entirely possible. If somebody he wanted to keep at Apple decided to quit, he would employ the RDF and soon enough they would change their mind.
Tribble said: "In his presence, reality is malleable. He can convince anyone of practically anything. It wears off when he's not around, but it makes it hard to have realistic schedules. And there's a couple of other things you should know about working with Steve."
Soon enough, the RDF began to be referred to in regards to Steve (and Apple's) ability to make the public think every new product was incredible and their ability to gloss over major flaws in Apple products, e.g. "You're holding it wrong".
But what's the truth surrounding the public's perception of Apple. Has the RDF run out? This infographic from aytm.com has some fascinating stats...

Onyx International shows off prototype smartphone. Outdoor visibility is great, the restā¦ not so much.
Substandard battery life is one of the biggest, most consistent, gripes we hear about smartphones.
Now compare them to the Kindle, which will last forever on a single charge because of its energy efficient e-ink screen, and the difference is shocking.
So what if you could get a smartphone with an e-ink screen?
Chinese company Onyx International done just that and while it's not perfect, there's definitely potential.
The outdoor visibility is excellent and the battery is said to last for a whole week, but... well.... can you imagine using a black and white screen with a dreadful refresh rate? No videos, no Jet Pack Joyride, definitely no Borderlands...
The phone shown in the video below is runnung a heavily modified version of Android too. However, as technology progresses, it's not beyond the realms of possiblity that we will one day have e-ink smartphones with quick-refreshing full-colour screens and incredible battery life.

Hello, All!
A new release of Speccy today:
Free version:
https://play.google.com/store/apps/d...com.fms.speccy
Nag-free version:
https://play.google.com/store/apps/d....speccy.deluxe
The main change in the Speccy 1.8.2 is the switch to using GLES-accelerated video by default. As the video has become faster, I also increased the number of frames drawn by default, so Speccy should feel much smoother now.
For those who prefer non-accelerated video, it has also been optimized by switching to Android SurfaceViews and improving the synchronization between Java and native parts of the app.
Finally, I have added support for the ZX128k ASCII printer, as opposed to the already supported graphics-only ZX Printer. You should now be able to do execute an "LLIST" command in the ZX128k BASIC
FULL LIST OF CHANGES:
* Added ZX128k printer support.
* Enabled video acceleration and increased number of drawn frames by default.
* Enabled SurfaceViews and optimized native thread sync for faster, smoother video.
* Now showing button labels and keyboard with video acceleration enabled.
* No longer deleting buttons layout on each upgrade.
* Added fast navigation with sections to the file selector.
* Improved the file selector UI look and feel.
* Enlarged screenshots in the file selector and Freeze/Restore.

Released VGBA-Android 3.9.21 tonight:
https://market.android.com/details?id=com.fms.vgba
The main changes are smoother, faster non-accelerated video and fixes to the license check code. Basically, trying to make it as unobtrusive as possible, although Google isn't making it easy. The current incarnation should only check once every three weeks and not require any network connection in between. If it does, please, let me know: it has to be fixed.
FULL LIST OF CHANGES:
* Switched to surfaces for faster non-accelerated video.
* Further optimized sync between Java and native code for smoother video updates.
* Made button labels solid.
* Fixed legacy wire-frame joystick display.
* Fixed support for FILL patch chunks inside .IPS files.
* Fixed crash on failed license verification attempts.
* Fixed the license verification response handler.
* Made file selector load directory listings faster.
* Cleaned up file selector labels.
* Added Mother 3 to the Cheatopedia.

Nokia and HTC's upcoming Windows Phone 8 flagships are still on the standard release path:announcement, federal approval and now, pre-order. Keeping device availability tucked firmly under its hat, Best Buy is now offering Nokia's Lumia 920 and the HTC 8X for pre-sale, priced at $149.99 and $99.99, respectively. Early buyers have options, too: the Lumia 920 is kitted out in red, blue, yellow, black and white shells. Fashionistas with a flair for purple, however, will need to stick to HTC's hardware. Unfortunately, you don't get that much choice -- Bust Buy's pre-orders don't balk at the devices' AT&T exclusivity. The retailer doesn't say when devices are going to ship, but we imagine early adopters won't have to wait too long.

Ahead of Google's Android event on the 29th there's additional confirmation of a storage upgrade for the Nexus 7, as 32GB units have now been spotted on shelves at US retailers. Seemingly dead-set on matching the LG E960 "Mako" Nexus G for the title of worst-kept secret, we've received this photo of a tag for the new unit at a Sam's Club (with a placeholder price). Reports on Android Central and The Verge also mention hardware spotted at Staples locations, with one person actually succeeding in buying one. All of that follows a listing on the Staples website and one Japanese buyer apparently receiving one early by accident. According to the tags and receipts, the new units are scheduled to go on sale the same day as the Android event, and at the same $249 price of the current 16GB model. Now that the alleged Sony Nexus phone has been exposed as a fake we don't know if there will be any surprises left, but if you want to buy anything from Google's brand then patience (or at least shopping around) is probably your best strategy.

We hope you didn't want Apple's little event next week to be a complete surprise. After promises of extra details for a prior leak, a WeiPhone forum goer has returned with photos of what's supposed to be the active screen and ports of the 13-inch MacBook Pro with Retina display that might be on stage come October 23rd. If this is what we get alongside the similarly unofficial miniature iPad, we'll take it. The possible leak shows a 2,560 x 1,600 LCD (four times higher in resolution than the existing MacBook Pro) and, importantly, no sacrifices in expansion versus the 15-inch Retina model -- there's still the dual Thunderbolt ports and HDMI video that shipped with this system's bigger brother. Vital details like the performance and price are left out, so there's a few cards left off Apple's table, but the images hint at what could be a tempting balance between the 15-inch MacBook Pro's grunt and the MacBook Air'sgrace.

There are thousands of apps in the Google Play mobile market that contain serious mistakes in the way that SSL/TLS is implemented, leaving them vulnerable to man-in-the-middle attacks that could compromise sensitive user data such as banking credentials, credit card numbers and other information. Researchers from a pair of German universities conducted a detailed analysis of thousands of Android apps and found that better than 15 percent of those apps had weak or bad SSL implementations. The researchers conducted a detailed study of 13,500 of the more popular free apps on Google Play, the official Android app store, looking at the SSL/TLS implementations in them and trying to determine how complete and effective those implementations are. What they found is that more than 1,000 of the apps have serious problems with their SSL implementations that make them vulnerable to MITM attacks, a common technique used by attackers to intercept wireless data traffic. In its research, the team was able to intercept sensitive user data from these apps, including credit card numbers, bank account information, PayPal credentials and social network credentials.

The Associated Press reports that smartphone robberies now account for nearly half of all robberies in San Francisco, as well as an impressive 40 percent here in New York City. And the numbers aren't just high, they're getting higher fast. In Los Angeles, smartphone robberies are up 27 percent from last year, with no signs of slowing down. The thefts come in all varieties as well. Victims have reported having their phonesāiPhones in particular (surprise!)āyanked out of their hands while talking, snatched just as public transit reaches a stop, or even taken at gunpoint."When I was relieved at gunpoint of my (very, very dumb) phone a few years ago in Philadelphia (very, very dumb), it made for a lousy evening. Have you been robbed (or accosted) like this? If so, where?

After developing JailBreakMe, cracking such devices as the iPad 2 or iPhone 4 and finally scoring apaying intern gig with his nemesis, hacker Comex tweeted that he's no longer working at Apple. Also known as Nicholas Allegra, the talented coder's Cupertino situation apparently came asunder when he failed to respond to an email offer to re-up with the company, though he also told Forbes that the situation was more complicated than that. He added that "it wasn't a bad ending," and that he has fond memories of his Apple experience, but if you're hoping the Brown University student will have an iOS 6 jailbreak soon, don't hold your breath -- he's concentrating strictly on his studies, for now.

Samsung has already started on the Jelly Bean upgrade path for the Galaxy S III, but that hasn't meant much so far unless you live in Samsung's homeland. The update's global relevance is expanding in grand fashion now that the company has confirmed the software is rolling out to Galaxy S III units across the UK. Variants on the smartphone for British carriers should get their taste of Android 4.1 over the course of a multi-week update process that brings everyone to the new version. Different carrier testing methods prevent Samsung from being any more specific; it's reasonable to say, though, that most owners living in Old Blighty should be running Jelly Bean before the holiday season kicks into overdrive.

Another day, another alleged problem with iPhone 5.
Although to be fair, this one is more of an issue with iOS 6, which is the latest operating system that can run on a range of Apple devices.
The Guardian reports that a number of users have been complaining about a significant hike in their monthly bills due to a sudden increase in their mobile data usage.
It is speculated that this is due to a potential bug in how iOS 6 switches between 3G and Wi-Fi connections. It is thought that itās related to the iTunes Match service or possibly iCloud synchronisation.
Some users have reported that even if iTunes Match is set to restrict its activities to Wi-Fi only, some downloading and uploading of data is taking place over the mobile network, using large amounts of data.
The added complication, of course, is that a high number of iPhone users are on tariffs with a 500MB monthly data cap. Going over that can sometimes result in additional charges.
This is just the latest problem to plague Apple since the launch of the iPhone 5 and iOS. As well as the iOS 6 Maps debacle weāve there has also been complaints about the camera and scratches on the casing.

Super Hexagon and VVVVVV creator Terry Cavanagh has released his indie classic Donāt Look Back on iOS and Android.
Thatās despite a temporary setback earlier this week when Apple rejected the submission due to the inclusion of the following text in its app description:
āYour app marketing text contains the following: āThere are no in-app purchases or any of that nonsenseā. It would be appropriate to remove or revise this content.ā
In addition, Cavanagh has said that the release ā which is free ā is a possible first stepping-stone toward a smartphone release of VVVVVV.
āRevisiting Donāt Look Back was a pretty strange experience,ā he wrote. āItās quite old now ā I made it in January 2009 ā and I hadnāt actually played it in some time. Despite numerous flaws which are glaringly apparent to me now, it remains a game Iām extremely proud of making.
ā2009, incidentally, is also the year that I made almost all of VVVVVV. One of the reasons I thought this port might be fun to do is that Iām considering an iOS and Android port for VVVVVV, so Iām seeing it as kind of a ātrial runā. I donāt know if itāll ever happen, and Iām not promising anything ā but Iām definitely thinking about it.ā
Cavanagh told MCV last month that his previous release, Super Hexagon, does not hate players, despite its brutal difficulty.
