So, heard about that Google Nexus 4 thingy from LG? O2 is the first UK carrier to announce it'll be carrying this year's winner of the "most-leaked Android phone" award, which was mercifully launchedon Monday. So far, we've found the "phenomenal" quad-core, 4.7-inch, 1280 x 768 handset with virgin Jelly Bean 4.2 to be "better than the sum of its parts," and Google will be selling the phone sim-free for an enticing ÂŁ239 at the Play store. That means you'll likely find the device free under contract, but your carrier choices may be limited to start, as O2's rumored to have a 30-day exclusive. There's no mention of price or availability, but Google's own sale date of November 13th seems a good bet.

Carphone Warehouse is now taking pre-orders for the Nokia Lumia 820 handset, and there's good news for the cash bereft -- it's free on contract, and the reseller will toss in a ÂŁ45 wireless charging plate to boot. You can commit ÂŁ29 per month to O2, Vodafone or Orange to avoid paying up front, or grab an unencumbered handset at ÂŁ380 for the 4.3-inch Windows Phone 8 device in black, red or white. For that, you'll get a 4G-capable smartphone with an 800 x 480 OLED screen, 1.5GHz dual-core Snapdragon S4 processor, 1GB of RAM and 8-megapixel camera. The free extra offer will expire when shipping starts, so if the WP8 launch has you all charged up, hit the source.

If you were one of the many who funded OUYA and have been sitting on pins and needles waiting for tangible progress updates, you just received them in spades. The fledgling console builder is on track with its Engineering Verification Test phase (you're looking at a board sample here) and should not only deliver the initial developer kits in December, but include a pleasant surprise in the process -- the Android-based platform will be built around Jelly Bean rather than the originally promised Ice Cream Sandwich. Programmers who just have to start right away have likewise been given a head start on hardware expectations. They'll have free rein over as much as a 1080p screen for their free-to-play games, although they'll have to toss aside familiar Android tropes like back and menu keys, notifications and fallbacks for hardware keyboards. The distinctive trackpad is likewise just a single-touch affair. To us, though, knowing that the console is finally taking shape just might be enough to tide us over until the March launch.

Not much is going to make us excited about the BlackBerry world until RIM's latest devices actually ship, but today's announcement from Thorsten Heins is certainly good news in that regard. Today, he revealed that BlackBerry 10 units are now in the testing labs of more than 50 carriers, a necessary milestone that suggests the first BlackBerry 10 devices are still on track for a Q1 2013 debut. Naturally, it's a shame that the company is going to miss the holiday season, but if you have a BlackBerry fan in your life, we suppose there's always room for an IOU in their stocking. In the meantime, you'll find the full statement from RIM's CEO after the break.

The collapse of the PC market has had much discussion on Slashdot with a common opinion that, now that Apple is the largest personal computer manufacturer, a loss of sales combined with Apple's iPad will completely eliminate most of them. Now Asustek's most recent results show that there may be a way out for those that can move away from their standard markets. Concentrating on Android tablet devices, the Google Nexus 7, with a help from ASUS transformer tablets has driven the company to massive $230 million profits. Asus gross revenue also climbed 9 percent to around $3.8 billion. We have discussed related issues recently: Where companies like HTC have lost their focus on open Android devices and suffered from devastating collapses, ASUS has managed to differentiate it's tablets by providing the most open tablet experience possible via with Google's Nexus program and branding."

Microsoft has unveiled a bounty of tools support for Windows Phone 8 from major gaming tools providers, such as Unity, Autodesk and Havok.
Over 30 commercial and open source offerings are supporting the new mobile OS, which went on sale earlier this week.
Gaming tools providers Unity Technologies, Autodesk and Havok have their engines running on Windows Phone 8, as well as Marmalade SDK. Frequently used audio library FMOD is on board, as is audio pipeline solution Wwise. See a select list of the tools providers below.
Another significant feature of the Windows Phone 8 is its support for native C++ programming, which opens up opportunities for game engines, physics, animation, audio libraries and other developments.
In addition to native gaming tools, Windows Phone 8 tools are also available for cross-platform frameworks, HTML5, libraries and UI support. Web API, backend and cloud services have also been announced, and are necessary to give developers the ability to expand their development capabilities, with monetisation, analyse usage and tracking.

Smartphone manufacturer Samsung has announced the latest edition to its Galaxy range of Android handsets.
With a 4.65-inch screen, the Galaxy Premier seems to be somewhere in between the Galaxy S3 and the Galaxy S3 Mini – size wise anyway.
The screen has a full 720 x 1280 Super AMOLE panel, there’s a dual-core 1.5GHz TI OMAP 4470 processor, and the Premier comes with Android 4.1 jelly Bean.
The smartphone will be available in 8GB and 16GB models, it will come with an 8MP rear facing camera and a 1.9MP front-facing one.
3G, Wi-Fi, NFC and Bluetooth are all supported, but surprisingly there is no sign of 4G LTE.
The Galaxy Premier will initially be released in Russia in November, followed by the Ukraine in December. The only price quoted so far is 5,555 Ukrainian Hryvna, which works out at just over ÂŁ400.
China, South Korea and South East Asia will all get Samsung’s latest offering, but there is no news yet as to whether it will make its way to the UK.

13 per cent decline of repurchase plans could spell bad luck for Apple's future.
Apple has been accused of lacking innovation following the mixed feelings about the iPhone 5 release. However, it has since gone on to reveal a 7.9-inch iPad mini, though plenty of other companies have already made 'portable-sized' designs.
Apple has always had something of a cult following, but has experienced a dip in brand loyalty for the first time ever, according to Strategy Analytics, finding a 13 per cent decline of repeat purchase plans among iPhone owners in Western Europe.
Of course, it should be noted that a dominant 75 per cent of Apple handset users still expect an iPhone purchase encore.
There was also a US-based decline, falling from 93 per cent in 2011 to 88 per cent in 2012.
Paul Brown, director at Strategy Analytics' User Experience Practice, said: "There is no doubt that Apple is continuing its success in retaining existing user base while attracting new customers.
"However, negative press prompted by a perceived lack of recent innovation by Apple has meant we are starting to see some growth in the number of previously highly loyal consumers who are now reconsidering whether or not they will purchase a new iPhone for their next device."
Taryn Tulay, analyst at Strategy Analytics' Wireless Device Lab, said: "It is the shift in the number of those who are unsure whether they will remain with the same brand for their next phone that Apple should be concerned about."
Presumably, users have lost faith in the brand after it decided to launch Apple Maps, which lost a string of locations.

As sales of Apple’s iPhone 5 begin to gather speed, Android devices have managed to increase their market across Europe to 67.1 per cent from 50.9 per cent 12 months ago, sales data from Kantar Worldpanel ComTech has revealed.
However, the smartphone data also shows that the rate of Android growth has slowed after initial iPhone sales show iOS gaining in both the US and Great Britain. Apple’s share has increased from 18.1 per cent to 28.0 per cent over the past year in the UK, while its US share has grown by 14.2 per cent.
Dominic Sunnebo, global consumer insight director at Kantar Worldpanel ComTech, commented on the findings: “While this latest data set only includes one week of iPhone 5 sales, we can see that in markets with a large number of existing Apple customers, sales have already seen a significant boost. We expect this momentum to be fully realised in the next set of results.”
While the iPhone 5 hit shelves across Europe throughout September, it is yet to become available in China and Brazil.

There's plenty of excitement surrounding the release of Windows 8 here at Build. The general consensus around the operating system, however, holds that the key to the OS's success is all about the apps, and CEO Steve Ballmer had no shortage of news on that front. The green-polo-shirted exec made mention of an official tweet from Twitter, noting the service's development plans for a Windows 8 app coming "in the months ahead." Also on the slate is Dropbox -- the popular storage service has an app "coming soon," according to Microsoft's own official blog. ESPN got a little face time at the event, showing off an app that'll deliver news, scores and video to Windows 8 users. Paypal, meanwhile, took the opportunity to talk up an API that'll bring its commerce services to Windows Store apps. More info on the new apps can be found in the source link below.

A lot of the hubbub yesterday was around the Nexus 4's support of Miracast, courtesy of Android 4.2. If you don't want to spring for a dedicated TV box or invest in a whole new set of gadgets to supersize your mobile experience, then you may be excited to hear that the handset also supports SlimPort. We haven't heard much from the DisplayPort-based standard since January, but we're happy to report it finally appears to be ready for primetime. Analogix, the company behind the tech, already has its first adapter up for sale on Amazon (at the more coverage link), which takes the Nexus 4's micro-USB port and allows you to connect an HDMI cable to it -- so long as that proposition is worth $30 to you. Eventually DVI, VGA and DisplayPort will also be added to list of output options, potentially making the this handset's charging port the most versatile micro-USB jack in the smartphone market. For more, check out the PR after the break.

Google has announced that 700,000 apps are available for Android devices
Alongside the reveal of its new lineup of Nexus devices, Google told Bloomberg that 700,000 apps are available for Android on the Google Play store. This means Google is close to catching rival Apple, who announced the same number of apps on its App Store during its hardware refresh last week.
Google still has some issues with piracy, Android fragmentation, and developers being able to monetize on the Android platform with compared to iOS revenue. In a survey of 5,500 developers, research firm Appcelerator (via TechCrunch) found that developers remained most interested in building iOS apps than any other platform.

Microsoft has finally released the Software Development Kit for its Windows Phone 8 mobile operating system. The launch was announced today at the company's BUILD 2012 conference and on theofficial Windows blog. Microsoft's Windows Phone general manager Kevin Gallo touted the company's focus on developer for this release.
"Of course, there's the developer opportunity," Gallo began in his post on the Windows blog. "Frankly, this was the easy part: we just delivered what you asked for. You told us you wanted native code, in-app-purchase, and more ways to reuse and port code-done, done, and done. More than 90 percent of the things you asked for, we added. These capabilities combined with new phone features like better Live Tiles, Lenses, NFC support, and custom app notifications and wallpaper on the lock screen mean that apps do more-and do it in more markets-on Windows Phone."
For the next 8 days, Microsoft is also lowering the fee for the Windows Phone 8 Dev Center to just $8. The account is required to release Windows Phone 8 app on the Windows Store and normally costs $99. Those interested will be charged for the full amount, with Microsoft refunding the $91 dollars in the next 30 to 45 days.

Intel researchers are working on a 48-core processor for smartphones and tablets, but it could be five to 10 years before it hits the market. Having a 48-core chip in a small mobile device would open up a whole new world of possibilities. 'If we're going to have this technology in five to 10 years, we could finally do things that take way too much processing power today,' said analyst Patrick Moorhead. 'This could really open up our concept of what is a computer... The phone would be smart enough to not just be a computer but it could be my computer.' Enric Herrero, a research scientist at Intel Labs in Barcelona, explained that with the prototype chip someone could, for instance, be encrypting an email while also working on other power-intensive apps at the same time — without hiccups. Same for HD video. Intel's Tanausu Ramirez said it could also boost battery life. 'The chip also can take the energy and split it up and distribute it between different applications,' he said. Justin Rattner, Intel's CTO, told Computerworld that a 48-core chip for small mobile devices could hit the market 'much sooner' than the researchers' 10-year prediction.

October 30th, 2012, 23:20 Posted By: wraggster
There have been plenty of rumors about how the Nexus program was going to grow and change with this year's announcement. Now that we have all the details, it looks like almost none of them were right. There is no Nexus certification program, and the dream of multiple Nexus phones seems well and truly dead. What we do have is a range of device sizes with the Nexus 4, Nexus 7, and Nexus 10. However, the Nexus program has been altered in one important way: we know what Nexus means now. There can no longer be any doubt: a Nexus device is about openness first and foremost. Last year the technology sphere was busily discussing whether or not the Verizon Galaxy Nexus was a 'true' Nexus device. This year we have an answer: a Nexus controlled by a carrier is no Nexus. Rather than get in bed with Verizon, Sprint, or AT&T to produce an LTE version of the Nexus 4, we have HSPA+ only. Even the new Nexus 7 with mobile data is limited to this enhanced 3G standard. And then there's the pricing: The super high-resolution (2560×1600) Nexus 10 tablet starts at just $399; The Nexus 7 is dropping in price to $199 for a 16GB tablet; The Nexus 4 with 16GB of storage is going to sell for $349, exactly the same as the old Galaxy Nexus was until yesterday. To put this into perspective, the LG Optimus G, which the Nexus 4 is based on, sells for $550 without subsidy. Google is pushing the idea of openness with the Nexus devices, but it's not an entirely altruistic endeavor. By giving us cheap and open devices, Google is making sure it's in control — not the carriers. That's better for the consumers, but it's also better for Google.

Microsoft has promised that cross-platform development across the 8s – from Windows 8 on a desktop to Windows Phone 8 – will be a simple matter, but that's still not enough to get some developers moving on Windows Phone 8 support. The Windows Phone platform has made a remarkable recovery since its reset with version 7. Since then, WP7 has grown to 100,000 apps. But that pales in comparison to the 675,000 in Google Play and 700,000 in the Apple App Store. Granted, there's a ton of redundancy – how many weather or newsfeed apps does one person need? – but it points to availability and developer support. A report from VentureBeat points out what should be obvious: that while developers like Windows 8, they aren't as excited about Windows Phone 8 software because they have already made huge investments in other platforms and don't want to support another platform. A survey by IDC and Appcelerator found 78% of Android developers were 'very interested' in programming for Android smartphones, a slight drop from the 83% in a prior survey. Interest in the iPhone and iPad remained undiminished, with 89% and 88% interest, respectively."

Tools provider also adds cross-platform support for Microsoft's latest mobile OS
Developers using the AppMobi SDK will now be able to produce Java and HTML5 apps for Windows 8 and its mobile equivalent, Windows Phone 8, from the same code.
AppMobi’s move comes a day after the launch of Windows Phone 8 – more coverage on Develop’s sister site Mobile Entertainment.
New app templates provide developers with code for supporting generic apps, web apps, accelerated games and Facebook apps. Developers can use these templates to create cross platform apps immediately by visiting AppMobi’s gallery.
AppMobi has also integrated Windows 8 and its mobile version into its appHub cross-platform build tool so that apps can be built into app store-ready files for iOS, Android, Facebook, Windows Phone, Amazon, Barnes & Noble and Mozilla app stores.
“Hundreds of thousands of developers who use AppMobi to build apps with JavaScript and HTML5 can now port them to the Windows 8 and Windows Phone 8 with a simple rebuild,” Dave Kennedy, CEO of AppMobi.

October 30th, 2012, 22:54 Posted By: wraggster
4G has finally become available in the UK. Well, parts of it at least.
The service, which is "set to offer a timely boost to the UK economy offering firms the opportunity to increase innovation, boost productivity and cut costs," has arrived.
Yet I've spend the majority of this morning grumbling about it to the ear of anyone who'll listen.
It's not the fact that the service has taken so long to hit UK shores. No, I'm perfectly happy with the fact that 4G was available in countries such as Angola, Tanzania and Kyrgyzstan (yes, really) before it was here.
I'm not overly upset with the pricing either. Don't get me wrong, 4G is expensive. But that's somewhat expected. Anytime a new service or product is launched, you expect to pay a premium for the chance to be one of the first to use it. It's unfortunate but something that we've all grown accustomed to.
What really annoys me with 4G, is the way it is being marketed by EE - or Everything Everywhere - within the UK and how the firm is effectively misleading customers.
Yes, 4G is fast. Yes, it allows users to stream more of their favourite media on the go. But something about EE's marketing campaign rubs me the wrong way.
Let's look at the firm's tariffs first.
Everything Everywhere's entry level tariff is priced at ÂŁ36 per month, which comes with just 500MB of data.
Now, bear that in mind as we look at what EE promises its customers with 4G.
- Access the web on the go in an instant
- Download large email attachments quicker than ever
- Watch live TV on the move without buffering
- Download high-definition movies in minutes
- Play live multiplayer games on the go
- Make high quality video calls on the move
I don't need to tell you that you won't be doing much of that with a measly 500MB of data. In fact, for a point of reference, just one hour of streaming content from BBC iPlayer will account for close to half of this data.
Of course, users can bolt on additional data to their package, but it certainly doesn't come cheap. How does ÂŁ3 for 50MB sound? Yeah, ouch.
EE's top tariff provides users with a meatier 8GB of data for ÂŁ56 per month, but again looking at the list from EE above, that still won't get users very far.
And with all of that in mind, it's clear that in order to actually experience the benefits of 4G, the only option for potential customers is to fork out for the top tariff.
Essentially, the firm is taking advantage of the UK's desperate need for a faster, more reliable data service, whilst luring in customers with the promise of HD streaming and multiplayer gaming.
Interested parties who don't necessarily need 4G may be forced to stick with 3G if they feel the costs outweigh the potential benefits.
Meanwhile, those users looking to reap the benefits as mentioned above will only be able to do so for an extreme premium and risk additional costs for something that the service is designed to offer. In effect, EE has trapped these users and marginalised others.
As it stands, nobody is set to benefit from the launch of 4G within the UK.
