"The team behind CyanogenMod, one of the most popular community-driven, Android-based operating systems for phones and tablets, has announced that they're moving to Cyanogenmod.org after their .com domain was held ransom by a community member. He had been in control of the .com domain name for some time, but the team found out he was impersonating Cyanogen to make deals with community sites. When they removed his access to other parts of the CM infrastructure, he demanded $10,000 to relinquish control of the domain and threatened to change the DNS entries. When they refused to pay, he went through with it. The team is now disputing control of the domain with ICANN. They said, 'We will continue to be open about the what, when, how, but unfortunately, we may never know the "why" – though greed comes to mind. The team itself has not made a profit off of CM and that is not our goal. But to have one of our own betray the community like this is beyond our comprehension.'"

New feature will allow users to make calls via wi-fi, providing businesses with 'enriched collaboration'.
It's no secret that RIM has suffered over the past year or thatBlackBerry users have become disenchanted with their devices, but the firm hoped to revive interest this week and announced its BB10 launch for January 30th 2013.
Now, RIM has launched BBM Voice, an integrated feature of its BlackBerry Messenger instant messaging service that will allow users to speak to their contacts and give their thumbs a rest when they're connected to wi-fi.
The move brings RIM a step forward but it's still behind, with the VoIP space dominated by Microsoft's Skype, while Apple already has a footprint in the market with Facetime.
As with BBM, BBM Voice will work globally, and the firm reckons it will provide businesses with 'enriched collaboration' while offering friends and family better comms over the Christmas season.
T.A. McCann, VP of BBM and social communities at RIM, said: "The new BBM Voice feature is for when you’re travelling and you want to call home without worrying about phone charges.
"It’s for when you have news you can’t wait to share, for quickly explaining complicated details, and collaborating with colleagues. Whenever your ideas are too big for text, there’s BBM Voice."
The service comes as part of the BBM version 7 update and is in beta for devices running the BlackBerry 6 or higher with support for BlackBerry 5 in the pipeline.

Certain iPhone and iPad applications from a Japanese company have broken software piracy detection mechanisms that are sending out tweets on the user's own Twitter account, saying, 'How about we all stop using pirated iOS apps? I promise to stop. I really will. #softwarepirateconfession.' The trouble is, it's sending these out on accounts of users who actually paid up to $50 or more for the software and who are legally using it. The app is asking for access to users' Twitter accounts, but does not give the reason why it is asking, so the author of the article concluded (rightly) that things were being done deliberately. Would you want your legally purchased software to send out messages to all of your contacts on Twitter or on other social networks saying that you were a software pirate? Would you excuse the writers of the software if it was just an error in their piracy detection measures?

Ranks as the UK's most commonly broken handset.
MobileInsurance.co.uk recently offered insight to the wildest insurance claims it's received, with the top spot going to a farmer who lodged his iPhone in his cow's anus.
The website now reveals that the iPhone 4 is the most commonly broken handset in the UK, though it's important to note that claims have soared since Apple unveiled the iPhone 5. Dropping the phone outdoors was the most used reason for breakage claims.
John Lamerton, co-founder of MobileInsurance.co.uk, said: "Cosmetic damage to iPhones is commonplace and most of the problems we see here are with cracked screens and water damage.
"Interestingly, the number of claims from iPhone 4 users has rocketed since the launch of the iPhone 5 - It would appear that once the thinner, lighter model with a bigger screen started appearing, owners of the previous version weren't quite as careful with their handsets anymore."
The full list of top ten most broken devices include:
1. iPhone 4
2. BlackBerry Torch 9800
3. iPhone 4S
4. iPhone 3GS
5. Samsung Galaxy S II
6. BlackBerry Bold 9900
7. Nokia Lumia 800
8. HTC One X
9. HTC Desire X
10. Sony Xperia S

The US firm will reportedly stop selling its extended warranty in Italian stores after being found to not be respecting EU-mandated guarantees.
Apple initially found itself in Italian court over the issue, after failing to make it clear to customers that its products come with a two-year warranty - as required by all electronics sold within Europe - as well as selling its own premium AppleCare service.
Whilst the firm has yet to make any formal announcements regarding the issue, the information was taken from a leaked email, which Apple sent out to retailers.
It details that whilst Apple stores will not longer offer AppleCare, customers will still be able to purchase the extended warranty service online via the company's website.
Italy may not be the only country to witness the withdrawal of AppleCare.
With the European Justice Minister writing to all member countries of the EU, it is possible that the firm may be forced to adopt a similar approach across Europe entirely.
As more customers become aware of the mandated two year warranty on products, less and less will be tempted to purchase AppleCare from the get-go, a trend that could cause the service to no longer be a viable option for Apple to offer.

Gartner’s latest report reveals that 169 million smartphones were sold in Q3.
The figures mean that smartphones accounted for around 40 per cent of all mobile devices sold in the quarter.
The report shows that Samsung was at the top of the worldwide mobile device sales table, taking 22.9 per cent of the market share with over 97 million units sold.
Nokia, LG, Motorola and HTC have all seen a drop in units sold since the last quarter, with Motorola and HTC taking a mere two per cent of the market share each.
Gartner also pointed out how operating systems fared in Q3, and it is no surprise to see that Android swamped the market with 72.4 per cent share – a rise of 20 per cent from Q2.
In second place was Apple’s iOS, which managed 13.9 per cent market share. RIM saw a decline in both handsets sales and market share, selling less than nine million units in Q3. With the recent announcement ofBlackBerry 10 plus two new handset in the pipeline, RIM could potentially claw back some of these figures in 2013.

Alan Sugar has stated that despite being an iPad owner, he’s not so keen on Apple hardware.
According to T3, the Amstrad founder praised the software ecosystem that Apple has built and admired its popularity with young people but said that he was less impressed with the quality of the devices themselves.
“I've got the iPad, though I'm not really an Apple fan, to be honest with you. I don't wish to say anything bad about them, but they're obviously very, very successful. They're a fashionable product, a cool product to have, and they've been very clever in tying up the apps and iStores and iTunes and all that stuff,” said Sugar.
However, he also noted that: “when it comes to technology, the quality of the reproduction on the telephone, the sensitivity and all that, there are others that are streets ahead of them.”

It's been a few months since UK TV operator Sky added remote control features to its iPad app, and now there's a similar refresh for the iPhone and iPod touch. The v4.2 update gives users brings remote control with support for gestures, DVR scheduling and management, a new guide as well as revamped navigation and search on the smaller screens, as long as they're connected to the same WiFi network as the box. The Android app is still without the new features, however they're promised to arrive there "in the coming months." As usual the update app is available at no charge via iTunes, hit the link below to check it out, or check out the press after the break for more details along with a demo video of the iPad version.

The very first CyanogenMod 10 builds surfaced while Jelly Bean was still extremely fresh in our memories. The passions around Google's new OS might have cooled months down the road, but that doesn't diminish the impact now that the first stable CM10 builds are here. Four (relatively) safe versions have arrived for devices that are either just getting their official Android 4.1 builds or were never destined to get one in the first place: support for the Samsung Galaxy S III in Sprint and Verizon editions is a natural fit, but both the LG Optimus Black and Samsung's Galaxy S II Skyrocket are making their own unofficial leaps. More devices should be coming down the road once any teething bugs are ironed out. You're still taking your own risks by going with a custom ROM, but it may be worthwhile for CM10 if perks like a root-friendly file manager or an expanded desktop are too tempting.

Good news for fans of Android alternatives: Google's just added binaries for Jelly Bean 4.2 to AOSP. Up until now, only the Nexus 10 and Nexus 4 had been privy to the company's latest OS version bump, but with the presence of these files on its developer portal and updates leaking out early, custom ROMs are just now a stone's skip away. Curiously, Mountain View has omitted the Nexus 4 from the list, but devs willing to get their hands dirty with the Nexuses 7 and 10, as well as both variants of the Galaxy Nexus -- yes, Verizon's model is on the list -- can have at it right now at the source link below.

Apple, Samsung, HTC and the like have been key drivers for the proliferation of touchscreen-only phones, with BlackBerry one of the only OEMs to continue sales of traditional QWERTY keypads.
Indeed, sales of touchscreen phones in the UK have grown by 25 per cent year-on-year, according to GfK, with the devices occupying almost 90 per cent of mobile contracts, rising from two-thirds in 2011.
Hussein Elsheibani, account executive, GfK, said: "Throughout 2012, touchscreen-only phones in this category have established clear dominance in the market, driven by the success of high end models.
"It is not only the touchscreen hardware, but also the software that comes with it that appeals to consumers. The touchscreen enables the consumer to use their handset for multiple purposes with the amount of applications being developed increasing immensely.
"This combination of a quality touchscreen and applications has been key to the uptake of touchscreens and will be key to the continuation of the uptake in the consumer market."
A prime example of touchscreens dominating the mobile market was demonstrated in Q3, with the Samsung Galaxy S III, iPhone 4S, and iPhone 5 ranking as the best-selling handsets.

November 13th, 2012, 23:16 Posted By: wraggster
Toys R Us has toys in the millions all under one roof, but the firm's in-store sales could be impacted this Christmas as more than half of mobile users plan to use their devices for shopping.
With that in mind, it's perhaps perfect timing that the retailer has revamped its mobile shopping apps and sites for Toys R Us and Babies R US, while launching a tablet-optimised site for both brands.
Customers will now have access to 'Buy Online, Pick up in Store' and 'Ship to Store' options through smartphones and tablets, something that was previously limited to desktop sites.
The apps and sites will also support product browsing, reviews, item info and video viewing, while searches can be completed based on a number of categories.
However, in-store shopping isn't dead just yet and there's a new barcode/QR code scanner for users to access extra product details when at the shop.
Of particular interest is the decision to embed location-based ads into the platform, which will allow users to find local deals based on their zip code. There's also a 'R Mobile Messaging' programme that provides registered users with coupons and events via text message twice a week.
Deals and favourites can also be shared across social networks Twitter, Facebook and Pinterest.
Milton Pappas, VP, e-commerce customer experience, Toys R Us, said: "As more and more customers use their mobile devices to browse and shop with us, we have worked to enhance this channel by redesigning our mobile site and apps, and have launched a tablet-optimised experience, making it even easier to shop Toys R Us and Babies R Us while on-the-go."

Even though 34 per cent think the Bring Your Own Device trend puts companies at risk.
We covered an infographic a few weeks ago that detailed the mobile elite, employees that embrace Bring Your Own Device (BYOD) schemes to stay connected to the business at all times.
However, Kaspersky Lab and B2B International report that a third of organisations give staff unmonitored access to company data from their smartphones, which puts them at risk of security attacks.
38 per cent of companies apply restrictions on smartphone use, such as bans to network content, while 19 per cent have a sweeping ban on the use of mobiles for work activities.
But just 11 per cent of companies actively use Mobile Device Management (MDM) software to keep phones and tablets in line with security policies, despite 34 per cent believing devices present a significant threat to the business.
Meanwhile, 23 per cent admitted to losing business data due to the loss or theft of mobile devices.
David Emm, senior security researcher at Kaspersky Lab, said; "BYOD is a tricky subject for organisations. Allowing employees the opportunity to use their own devices in the workplace can lead to enhanced productivity and creativity, but can also bring increased risk.
"Rather than applying a blanket ban on the use of personal devices, businesses should look to manage and secure the use of these devices, enabling them to reap the benefits of BYOD without the security worry."

An American woman has been tricked in to paying $200 for a mirror after being convinced it was an iPad.
Apparently, Jalonta Freeman of Arlington in Texas was at a petrol station when a man pulled up and offered her an iPad at a quarter of its retail price – a deal that she duly snatched up.
“He was, like, okay, I gotta hurry up and go and stuff and he drove off,” said Ms Freeman.
However, after he left, she found that the ‘iPad’ was in fact just a mirror with a picture of an iPad taped over the front.

RIM has officially announced that the next version of its mobile OS will be launched on Wednesday, January 30th 2013, along with two new handsets.
The new phones will demonstrate the new BB10 features, including BlackBerry Flow, which will allow for ‘seamless navigation’ between apps.
Other features include BlackBerry Hub – a central bank for messages, notifications and events, and BlackBerry Balance – designed to help the user keep their personal apps and info separate from their work-related data.
Thorsten Heins, president and CEO of RIM, commented: "In building BlackBerry 10, we set out to create a truly unique mobile computing experience that constantly adapts to your needs.
"Our team has been working tirelessly to bring our customers innovative features combined with a best in class browser, a rich application ecosystem, and cutting-edge multimedia capabilities.
"All of this will be integrated into a user experience – the BlackBerry Flow – that is unlike any smartphone on the market today.
"Thanks to our strong partnerships with global carriers and a growing ecosystem of developers, we believe our customers will have the best experience possible with BlackBerry 10. We are looking forward to getting BlackBerry 10 in the hands of our customers around the world."

It's a few months late, but at least it's hitting the streets for a few less dollars than expected. The Datawind-built Aakash 2 is finally a reality, launching in India on the nation's National Education Day. It's the second iteration of what amounts to a barebones, affordable Android slate, packing a 7-inch touch panel, 1GHz Cortex-A8 processor, 512MB of RAM, 4GB of Flash storage, Android 4.0.3, built-in WiFi and a front-facing VGA camera. Reportedly, this one's going to be shipped to Indian students for Rs 1,130 (around $21), while outsiders will be able to snag one for closer to $80. Of course, the difference now is that these kinds of projects aren't quite as novel. Indeed, Chinese megashops are hawking low-rate Android tablets right now for around the same amount, setting a new (low) bar when it comes to pricing on ho hum slates. Still, we're all for getting technology into the hands of students, and you can learn a bit more about what those very students can expect from VentureBeat's hands-on just below.

Rovio and Lucasfilm’s Angry Birds Star Wars collaboration has broken all previous Rovio records on its route to the top of Apple’s App Store downloads chart, topping the rankings just two and a half hours after its launch last Thursday (November 8th).
Launched across multiple platforms, including Apple, Android, Kindle Fire and Windows Phone 8, Angry Birds Star Wars has already proved to be hugely popular amongst customers, with 1,406 of the 1,547 user reviews currently posted rating the game five stars out of five.
The latest addition to Rovio’s Angry Birds franchise is the fifth instalment of the series, which topped the one billion cumulative download mark earlier this year.
