"iOS 6, by all appearances, has a streaming problem. This is separate from the network issues that led Verizon to state that it wouldn't bill people for overages that were caused by spotty Wi-Fi connectivity. The issue has been detailed at PRX.org with information on how the team saw a huge spike in bandwidth usage after the release of iOS 6, and then carefully tested the behavior of devices and its own app to narrow the possible cause. In one case, the playback of a single 30MB episode caused the transfer of over 100MB of data. It is believed that the issue was solved with the release of iOS 6.0.1, but anecdotal evidence from readers points to continued incidents of high data usage, even after updating. If you own an iPhone 5 or upgraded to iOS 6 on an older device, it is strongly recommend to check your usage over the past two months, update to iOS 6.0.1, and plan for a lengthy discussion with your carrier if it turns out your data use went through the roof."

If you want to know just how broken the patent system is, just look at patent D670,713, filed by Apple and approved this week by the United States Patent Office. This design patent, titled, 'Display screen or portion thereof with animated graphical user interface,' gives Apple the exclusive rights to the page turn in an e-reader application. ... Apple argued that its patented page turn was unique in that it had a special type of animation other page-turn applications had been unable to create."The article doesn't really make it clear, but this is for the UI design of showing a page being turned, not the actual function of moving from one page to another. That said, the patent itself cites similar animations in Flash from 2004.

Pokémon app is console giant's first paid-for title on iOS
Nintendo subsidiary The Pokémon Company has released a Pokédex app on the iOS App Store in Japan.
The title marks Nintendo’s first foray into paid-for apps on the App Store, and comes after The Pokemon Company released free Creatures Inc-developed mobile game Pokemon Say Tap? in July last year, which is also available on Android.
The latest app, also created by Creatures Inc, currently costs ¥170, and also features in-app purchases enabling users to expand and complete their Pokédex. It is compatible with the iPhone, iPod Touch and iPad.
The title allows users to search hundreds of Pokémon from the popular series, with information and images available on each entry. The Pokédex’s App Store page also appears to suggest there are small videos that can be played, as well as sounds for each pokémon.
Whilst not a traditional game, the release could mark a big shift in Nintendo’s development strategy, having previously been reticent to make titles for platforms other than its own. It should be noted however that any success will likely not result in the release of games based on Nintendo's other major franchises in the near future.

While Kevin Bacon is still bothering Brits the land over with news of 4G and a hefty dose of borrowed nostalgia for Corrie, Catchphrase and Frank Carson, UK telecoms regulator Ofcom is already outlining its plans for a 5G Spectrum to be rolled out over the next decade.
The announcement outlined the firm’s plans to enable the release of new airwaves in a bid to meet the growing demand for data on the move.
Ofcom has also released new data on the UK's communications infrastructure, revealing that the amount of data consumed over the past year via its mobile networks has more than doubled to 20 million Gigabytes, as opposed to nine million in 2011.
The regulator claims that demand for mobile data could be 80 times higher than today by 2030, and is therefore preparing plans now to support the release of spectrum for future mobile services, possibly '5G', when the spectrum becomes available.
The plans is to draw on the 700 MHz frequency band, which, at present, is currently used for digital terrestrial television as part of future harmonised international spectrum planning. Furthermore, the release of the new frequencies will be achievable with no need for another TV 'switchover'.
Ed Richards, chief executive, Ofcom, said: "Within the coming months we will hold the UK's largest-ever auction of mobile spectrum for 4G. However, that may not be enough to meet consumers' future data demands, which is why we are already making significant efforts to prepare to go beyond 4G.
"Our plans are designed to avoid a 'capacity crunch', ensuring that the UK's mobile infrastructure can continue to support the inescapable growth in consumer demand and economic growth more generally."

Thieves have taken $1.5 million worth of iPad Mini’s in a raid at JFK Airport.
According to the New York Post, the heist took place in the same cargo unit that was the target of the 1978 Lufthansa heist that was immortalised in the movie ‘Goodfellas’.
The criminals struck just before midnight and used one of the airport’s own forklift trucks to load two pallets of the devices on to a truck. However, they drove off leaving behind three more pallets after being challenged by an airport employee returning from break.
The iPads had apparently just arrived from China and were awaiting shipment across the US.

The firm's head of mobile sales and marketing has acknowledged that its Xperia smartphone fails to compete with both Apple and Samsung.
In an interview with the German edition of the Financial Times, Dennis Van Schie admitted that Sony's Xperia smartphone lacks behind both the iPhone 5 and Samsung Galaxy S III.
However, Van Schie took the opportunity to announce that Sony would be unveiling a new smartphone at next year's annual CES event held in Las Vegas.
"We will create in the near future a flagship Sony model that can compete with Apple's iPhone and Samsung's Galaxy S III," said the head of Sony Mobile's sales and marketing.
Van Schie also revealed that a new range of Sony tablets will be on show at the event too but they will be limited in number as "it has become very difficult to earn money with tablets."
That would certainly seem to be the case with the dominance of Apple within the market, as well as fierce competition from Microsoft's newly released Surface tablet.

Toshiba has spent a surprising amount of time at the high-end of the tablet world this year with devices like the Excite 7.7 and Excite 13. It's taking an opposite tack going into the all-important holiday season. The AT300SE spotted earlier this year (likely to be called the Excite 10SE in North America) has been made official for the UK, and it's all about catering to the starter audience without tarnishing the core experience. The 10.1-inch slate is slightly thicker and heavier than its regular AT300 (Excite 10) cousin and scales back the cameras to 3 megapixels at the back and 1.2 at the front, but it preserves the quad-core Tegra 3 and 1,280 x 800 IPS-based display that we know so well. There's even a slight advantage to having held out for the frugal model: the AT300SE ships with Jelly Bean from the outset, which could leave it feeling faster than its Ice Cream Sandwich-toting predecessors. At £300 ($476), the lone 16GB model due this fall isn't officially as cheap as the AT300 on the street, although we wouldn't be surprised to see the real-world cost drop lower. We're mostly left wondering if the as yet unconfirmed Excite 10SE could beat the slimmer original's $400 price in the US.

"When Steven Sinofsky stepped down as head of Microsoft's Windows division earlier this week, multiple publications cited friction with other executives as the primary reason behind the departure. Whether or not that's the case—neither Sinofsky nor Microsoft has offered an official explanation, aside from the usual platitudes—someone with connections to Microsoft is claiming that Sinofsky's departure stemmed from a failed attempt to bring additional parts of the company under his control. 'Steven had apparently lost recent battles to bring both Windows Phone and the Developer Division under his control,' Hal Berenson, president of consulting group True Mountain Group and a former Microsoft executive, wrote in a Nov. 13 blog posting. 'I suspect that he saw those [losses] both as a roadblock to where he wanted to take Windows over the next few years, and a clear indication that his political power within Microsoft had peaked.' The departure, he added, was the 'outgrowth of conflict.' Berenson's claim was enough to draw Sinofsky himself into the discussion. In the comments section below the posting, Sinofsky left a short note suggesting that rumors of a multi-product takeover were, frankly, malarkey."

The Gold version of the Blackberry 10 SDK will be released on December 11th, Research in Motion has announced.
The updated development kit will allow developers to complete final testing of their games and submit their apps to Blackberry App World ready for the launch of Blackberry 10 on January 30th.
The deadline to submit apps to the storefront and take advantage of the 10k developer commitment, which guarantees developers $10,000 revenue in the first year if they earn a minimum of $1,000, is on January 21st.
As well as the gold SDK, RIM will be updating the Blackbery 10 SDK on November 20th, which will include numerous bug fixes and increased functionality to the WebWorks HTML5 tools.
The mobile firm said it hoped the update would draw the WebWorks toolset closer to parity with its own Native tools.

New research by insights firm Nielsen reveals that over three quarters of the UK’s Android smartphone owners send internet data via Wi-Fi.
This compares to just 22 per cent who chose to transfer their data through 3G.
The average UK Android smartphone owner conducts most of their mobile data ‘offloading’ via Wi-Fi after 5pm, peaking between 11pm and midnight when 90 per cent commence transference, claims the research.
3G data, however, tends to peak just before the working day begins, again at lunchtime and finally during early evening, when users are unable to rely on a Wi-Fi connection.
Meanwhile, the research reveals that 3G mobile data usage drops by more than 55 per cent between 6pm and midnight, but when factoring in Wi-Fi, it actually increases by almost 30 per cent.
David Gosen, managing director for digital, Nielsen European, explained: "Wi-Fi is on average three-and-a-half times more dominant than 3G when it comes to delivering mobile internet data services. It peaks around midnight as users gravitate towards social networks, driven by their desire to stay connected through all waking hours.
"Previously, the main insight into the volume of mobile traffic came from the networks' own records,” he continued. “Now, with Nielsen Smartphone Analytics we can complete the whole consumer picture.
"The implications for all stakeholders in the industry are enormous in terms of being able to show the total level of demand for mobile data, the drivers of that usage, and how it varies by operator and application type."

The Wall Street journal has reported that Samsung is close to completing mobile devices with flexible OLED displays.
A source said the be close to the matter told WSJ that handsets are set to be released in the first half of 2013.
Samsung’s display unit is allegedly in the last phase of development of flexible OLEDs. They have been in the development phase for many years, and Sony and LG have already launched prototypes. So far, manufactures haven’t been able to commercialise them, but Samsung hopes to be the first to bring the product to market.
Using flexible plastic screens rather than glass could make mobile devices cheaper as well as lighter. If the rumours are to be believed, we could be seeing these devices very soon.

Bastion for iPad is now a universal app with support for iPads 2-4, iPhone 5, iPhone 4S and 5th generation iPod touch. Developer Supergiant announced the update on its site today, noting it includes upgrades such as full optimization for the iPhone 5 screen and iCloud support (to transfer saves).
The developer previously stated it "felt the game experience would not translate well to the iPhone's smaller screen," but the launch of the iPhone 5 had them take another look. Bastion is currently $4.99 and the update is free if you already own the game on iPad.

We didn't beat around the bush when calling the original Nexus 7 the best tablet your hard-earned $200 could buy, but those who wanted one with built-in mobile data were sadly left out in the cold. Today, Google's remedying that. The Nexus 7 tablet with WiFi + Mobile Data is shipping today in unlocked form, with a sole 32GB model available for $299. It's the same unit that passed through the FCC's database just weeks ago, offering Android 4.2 (Jelly Bean), a SIM slot with an AT&T SIM (for use with HSPA+ connections on over 200 GSM carriers around the world), and the same overall fit and finish from the original. We'll be spending a bit of time with this guy in the days to come, but those already sold can pass along their billing information in the source link below.
