Aside from the instant gratification of a hot beverage and jolt of caffeine, Starbucks is offering its patrons some free iOS gaming from Sega. Sonic the Hedgehog 4: Episode 2 is the Starbucks pick of the week, meaning that participating Starbucks locations across North America will have cards with codes printed on them available to patrons until November 27.
While the first episode of Sonic 4suffered from many problems, Sonic 4: Episode 2 showed marginal improvements over its predecessor but still failed to capture the series magic of yesteryear. Still, it's not a terrible game and would certainly pair well with that quad venti, sugar free, non-fat, no foam, extra whip caramel macchiato you're always ordering.

If you have any gadget junkies in your life, there's a good chance they're craving a new smartphone. Whether you're on a tight budget or have a fat wallet, simply look to our surefire list of the best and most unique mobile devices to place under the tree. But enough with the chatter... let's start shopping!
[h=2]On the cheap[/h][h=3]HTC ONE X[/h] As luck would have it, one of our favorite smartphones of the year is currently an outright steal. The HTC One X for AT&T combines excellent performance, a fantastic camera and one of the best displays on the market into one stunning handset. We've little doubt that any gadget fan in your life will love the One X, which is set to get even better with an upgrade to Android 4.1. The same is true for its alter ego on Sprint, the EVO 4G LTE, which features much of what we love from the One X and adds to it a dedicated camera button, a larger battery, removable storage and a handy kickstand.
Key specs: 4.7-inch HD (1,280 x 720) S-LCD 2 display, 1.5GHz dual-core Snapdragon S4, 8-MP rear / 1.3-MP front cameras, 16GB built-in storage, Android 4.0.
Price: $0.01 (AT&T) or $20 (Sprint) at Amazon Wireless
[h=4]YOU MIGHT ALSO LIKE...[/h][h=4]Motorola Droid RAZR M[/h]The Droid RAZR M is an outright budget superstar. The phone boasts a speedy dual-core processor, dependable battery life and a fantastic still camera. Yes, it sports a sub-premium qHD display and the video camera is lackluster, but for the price this is an incredibly well-rounded smartphone.
Price: $0.01 (Verizon) at Amazon Wireless
[h=4]Samsung Galaxy S Blaze 4G[/h]Don't expect it to go toe to toe with our other budget contenders, but the Galaxy S Blaze 4G is an excellent value for T-Mobile customers. The phone offers robust performance, long battery life and excellent call quality. It also features a truly respectable camera.
Price: $20 (T-Mobile) from Wirefly
[h=2]Mid-range[/h][h=3]GALAXY S III[/h] While most of us prefer HTC's high-end offerings at AT&T and Sprint, the Galaxy S III is an excellent smartphone in its own right. It also has the distinct advantage of being available for all of the major national carriers. The Galaxy S III boasts a spacious and beautiful display, an excellent camera, fantastic performance and solid battery life. Needless to say, it's certain to make any gadget lover giddy. Better yet, like the One X, the Galaxy S III is set to receive an upgrade to Jelly Bean in the near future.
Key specs: 4.8-inch HD (1,280 x 720) Super AMOLED display, 1.5GHz dual-core Snapdragon S4, 8-MP rear / 2-MP front cameras, 16GB or 32GB built-in storage, Android 4.0.
Price: $40 (Sprint), $100 (AT&T) or $60 (Verizon) at Amazon Wireless; $200 (T-Mobile) from Wirefly
[h=4]YOU MIGHT ALSO LIKE...[/h][h=4]Motorola Droid RAZR HD[/h]One of the most anticipated smartphones to debut this season is the Droid RAZR HD for Verizon Wireless. The device is a huge improvement over the original Droid RAZR, with excellent performance, a higher-res display and gobs of battery life.
Price: $150 at Amazon Wireless
[h=4]Nokia Lumia 920[/h]The Lumia 920 deserves special consideration for the shutterbug in your life, with a floating lens and sensor that bring unparalleled image stabilization and low-light performance. If the carrier is a deal-breaker, we're also big fans of the HTC 8X (on AT&T, T-Mobile and Verizon).
Price: $70 at Amazon Wireless
[h=2]Money's no object[/h][h=3]IPHONE 5[/h] If you're looking to make this holiday season truly memorable for someone, the iPhone 5 is your go-to device. Available for AT&T, Sprint, Verizon and a number of regional carriers, Cupertino's latest ranks among the most sought-after smartphones of the year. It boasts snappy performance, a top-notch display, commendable battery life and an excellent camera -- all wrapped in a truly beautiful enclosure. If you're really willing to splurge, be sure to grab either the 32GB or 64GB model, which will allow your loved ones to fill their phones to the brim with their favorite movies, music and photos.
Key specs: 4-inch Retina (1,136 x 640) IPS display, 1.3GHz dual-core A6 processor, 8-MP rear / 1.2-MP front cameras, 16GB / 32GB / 64GB built-in storage, iOS 6.

Price: $230 (Sprint), $250 (AT&T) at Amazon Wireless; $280 (Verizon), $300 (T-Mobile) at Wirefly
[h=4]Nexus 4[/h]For a pure Android experience, the Nexus 4 is tops. The unlocked phone's display and camera are miles ahead of the Galaxy Nexus. It costs a bit more than what you'd typically find on contract, but carriers like T-Mobile or Simple Mobile offer pricing incentives for bringing your own handset.
Price: $299 (8GB) or $349 (16GB) fromGoogle

Apple’s range of iDevices dominate the Christmas lists of kids aged 6-12 in the US.
Its success comes at the expense of Nintendo’s Wii U, which is forced into second place according to new data from Nielsen.
Apple’s iPad is the most sought after gift followed by Wii U, iPad Touch, iPad Mini and iPhone. Around half of the kids surveyed expressed interest in an iPad, up from 44 per cent the year before. 29 per cent will be asking for a Nintendo 3DS.
Xbox and PS3 also feature highly with 25 per cent and 26 per cent respectively. It’s bad news for Vita, though – Sony’s machine will feature on the Christmas lists of just 14 per cent of those questioned, which is lower than the 18 per cent who’d like a PSP.

A petition has recently been started to get the developer of the popular Android 'MIUI' ROM, Chinese based Xiaomi, to comply with the GPL. While Android itself is licensed under the Apache 2.0 License, and therefore does not actually require derivative works to be FOSS, the Linux kernel itself is GPL-licensed and needs to remain open. Unless Xiaomi intends to develop a replacement for the Linux kernel, they need to make their modifications public."

Having arrived on the market earlier this month, Windows Phone 8 devices are currently experiencing a variety of teething problems, with HTC and Nokia handset users reporting rebooting issues and low battery life.
A number of HTC 8X users have been left frustrated by their mobile randomly rebooting, while Nokia Lumia 920 users have also reported reboots and freezes, along with poor battery life. These battery issues have led some users to wipe their mobile in an attempt to achieve a quick solution. However, rather than yield the intended result, this move has only served to compound their misery, leaving some devices stuck on a Nokia splash screen.
In separate statements to The Verge, both Nokia and HTC stated that they are aware of the rebooting issues. "‘We are working with Microsoft to investigate these reports. We will provide an update as soon as more information is available," said a Nokia spokesperson, with HTC confirming that it is currently looking into the problem at call centres and within its labs.
Earlier this year, Nokia's Lumia 800 handset was also blighted with a variety of battery issues, leading to the manufacturer being inundated with complaints.

MacTechnology's Robert Peckham talks about the new-look Apple store design.
Every time I get a phone call from any of the IT industry journalists I know, it’s always to ask for my comments about some newly revealed negative aspect of working with Apple as a reseller, service provider or VAR. And I've had quite a number in the past few weeks, all about the same topic...
If you mention V2 to any Apple Premium Reseller (APR) in the UK, they'll either roll their eyes and tut, or hang their shaking head in desperation. What is V2? In a nutshell, it’s the new-look Apple store design that has been rolling out across Europe for almost two years, which is now being brought to the UK after some hesitation.
Why is this such a big thing? Because Apple is insisting all its APR retail partners must pay to refit their stores under V2, or lose their coveted APR status together with Apple’s support of their marketing, performance rebates and all the other margin enhancers that make APR stores in any way profitable. And Apple won't be paying for V2.

The "Smoked By Windows Phone" marketing drive has seen over 250,000 head-to-head handset battles so far, with many hits for Redmond and also a few embarrassing misses. The campaign is now changing tack to embrace a slightly safer, less physical tone, under the banner of "Meet your Match." The side-by-side comparisons with rival phones will remain, but the spotlight has been broadened to cover features like camera work and sharing, among others, instead of focusing only on speed. While it's likely the offer of free phones as prizes that will light up faces in the promo vids, regardless of the strengths of the OS itself, the overall pitch certainly feels more on-point than some others we've seen.

Apple was today granted a patent from the United States Patent and Trademark Office, filed as 8,316,046, which lays out the framework for a mobile device to "collect and store journal event data over a time span, the journal event data comprising data associated with a plurality of events, including a location and a timestamp of each event." Moreover, the first independent claim spells out that the system would utilize geotag data ("locations and timestamps") in order to parse events.
In layman's terms, the platform would be able to automatically separate check-ins, pit stops, photos, activities and movements based on when and where things happened. From here, it's anyone's guess as to what Apple would do with the information, but you don't have to gaze beyond the 'Events' section in the company's own iPhoto application to get a few solid ideas. One might even say that Apple's attempting to provide a Path-like experience within the iOS core, but who knows if it'll ever actually act on its earlier inclinations. Those who like to let their imaginations run wild can have at it in the source link below.

Windows Phone may not have the market share of Apple or Google, but it does appear to be winning in one key area for game developers: monetization. According to data from EEDAR's 2012 Mobile Syndicated Reports, sent to GamesIndustry International, Windows smartphone users "consistently outspend their peers" with almost 10 percent of Windows gamers classified as "Whales" (those who spend more than $25 a month) compared to just four percent on both iOS and Android.
EEDAR also noted that of the over 4.5 million smartphone gamers who use a Windows OS device, 28 percent are "Dolphins" - people who spend between $5 and $25 per month. The percentage of Dolphins drops to 19 percent among iOS users and 15 percent among Android users. Overall, Windows has the smallest percentage of non-payers at only 21 percent.
If Microsoft can keep these percentages while growing its total installed base for Windows devices, then developers will certainly have to think about supporting the platform. For now, though, audience size certainly still matters.

Ubisoft today launched the ZombiU iOS app to coincide with the arrival of the game at the end of the month.
The app contains an ‘infection simulator’ which provides information on the virus and gives consumers the chance to see what they would look like if riddled with the virus.
Users can also use the app to record emergency video messages and share their zombiefied images and panicky videos on Facebook and Twitter.
The new app will act as a promotional tool for the new survival horror game, which launches alongside the Wii U on November 30th.

The number of apps created for iOS has passed one million, says social app discoverability company Appsfire.
The company revealed the news in a tweet but have not given any further information surrounding the numbers and have not yet updated the figures to account for November.
The number represents that total that have been submitted, and since around one in four apps have since been taken off or replaced, the current number on the App Store sits at a few hundred thousand lower.
This milestone comes as Android begins to catch up with app numbers sitting at around 700,000 according to Google.

There are two Skylanders mobile games in the works, and one is even heading to the High Street.
The Skylanders Battlegrounds Starter Pack includes a special wireless Bluetooth Portal of Power that 'brings figures to life' on iOS, and three physical characters: Jet Vac, Series 2 Cynder and Double Trouble as well as a Platinum Treasure Chest, which features extra digital items to be used in Skylanders Battlegrounds.
The other game – Skylanders Lost Islands – can also use the physical toys. The title is a resource management game, challenging fans to rebuild and customize their own version of ‘Skylands’.
The two new titles joins the existing iOS title, Cloud Patrol, which has also received a significant update.

AT&T screwed up in 2010, serving up the e-mail addresses of over 110,000 of its iPad 3G customers online for anyone to find. But Andrew Auernheimer, an online activist who pointed out AT&T's blunder to Gawker Media, which went on to publicize the breach of private information, is the one in federal court this week. Groups like the Electronic Frontier Foundation worry that should that charge succeed it will become easy to criminalize many online activities, including work by well-intentioned activists looking for leaks of private information or other online security holes. [Auernheimer's] case hasn't received much attention so far, but should he be found guilty this week it will likely become well known, fast.

Forget the love of a good woman, I'd rather snuggle up to a curvaceous Galaxy S III.
The OnlinePsychologyDegree has delved into the minds of mobile device users to find that usage doesn't decline at bedtime, but rather the opposite as one in three users would rather give up sex than their phone.
With that in mind, 95 per cent of people say they watch TV, text, and browse the web in the hour before they hit the sack, while 90 per cent of 18-29 year-olds sleep with their phone in or right next to their bed.
What's more, 25 per cent of people don't silence their mobiles before bed, so it's probably unsurprising that one in ten say they're disturbed from their slumbers a few times a week by calls, texts and emails.

Outpaces Samsung despite Galaxy S III being the quarter's best-selling smartphone.
Mobile ad network Adfonic has released its Global AdMetrics Report for Q3 2012 to show that Apple and Samsung have increased their global share of ad impressions, powering nine of the global top ten ad served smartphones.
However, Apple managed to retain the top spot ahead of its Korean foe to power 37 per cent of impressions, up from 34 per cent in Q2. This was achieved despite Samsung's Galaxy S III being crowned the world's best-selling device during the quarter, with the firm generating 24 per cent of impressions up from 23 per cent.
Apple's growth looks set to further too, as the iPhone 5 and new iPads weren't included in the figures due to its late September and October releases, though its existing iPhone and iPod Touch still managed to rank as the top two devices by ad impression share.
Victor Malachard, CE of Adfonic, said: "It is significant that, even though Samsung is making huge inroads in device ownership and gaining mobile advertising share, it is still losing ground to Apple.
"And these results don’t take into account the impact of new Apple devices such as the iPhone 5, the iPad Mini and the new iPad, which will be felt during Q4. Meanwhile new Samsung products such as the Galaxy S3 Mini will also start to appear. It’ll be very interesting to see how the Apple v Samsung rivalry plays out during Q4."
The full report is available from the Adfonic website – http://adfonic.com/news/reports/

Mozilla has added support for millions more devices to its Firefox for Android web browser.
Until now, Firefox supported phones running Android version 2.2 and higher – if the phone had an ARMv7 processor. The browser is now compatible with a number of devices using ARMv6 processors. These include the HTC Status, HTC ChaCha, Samsung Galaxy Ace, Motorola Fire XT, and the LG Optimus Q.
“At Mozilla, our mission is to bring the Web to as many people as we can. Given that roughly half of the nearly 500 million Android phones in use today run on ARMv6 architecture, this is an important step toward making the open Web free to all,” reads the Mozilla blog.
New accessibility features have been added, which makes web browsing easier for the visually impaired. One of these, Explore by Touch, enables the user to browse to web using speech output, sounds and vibrations.

Would you like a little silicon gore to go with that Kindle Fire HD 8.9 review? Well, you're in luck as the folks over at PowerbookMedic have just posted a teardown of Amazon's high-end tablet. Despite sharing a physical similarity to its 7-inch sibling, there are a few surprises inside: like its predominant use ofSamsung-sourced components (display, processor and flash storage), in addition to a connected 6,000mAh dual battery setup. DIY types can hit up the source below for an illustrated how-to, but as always, we caution you to proceed at your own risk.

Strategy Analytics has released the App Ecosystem Opportunities report, which shows more than 350 billion smartphone and tablet app downloads will have taken place between 2008 and 2017.
Google Play will account for more than 45 per cent of phone downloads due to the vast reach of its Android OS, while Apple is set to command 56 per cent of tablet downloads in 2017 due to the iPad's market domination.
Interestingly, paid downloads will generate more than $57 billion globally over the same time period, but the average cost of a smartphone app will drop to eight cents in the next five years as free (with in-app ads) and freemium apps are set to account for 91 per cent of all downloads by 2017.
The change of direction will lead to a decline in revenue and increasing app store maintenance costs, such as marketing and app approval staff, which will prompt portals to devise new revenue generators.
Josh Martin, director of apps research at Strategy Analytics, said: "Paid downloads remain an essential component of the app ecosystem. Paid downloads will remain an important way for smaller developers to monetise their efforts. For developers committed to paid downloads transitioning to tablets may be the smartest way to preserve the business model over the long term.
"App Stores will also see a revenue crunch as more revenue is earned from advertising – revenue generated outside the bounds of the app store - and will need to prepare. Newer platforms such as Windows 8, BlackBerry 10, Tizen and Firefox are building their operating systems and storefronts with this knowledge which should go a long way to making them attractive to developers and end users."
