Amidst the fierce competition in the Chinese mobile market,Meizu has managed to keep up with its annual cycle to unveil its latest flagship device, the MX2. Announced at the launch event in Beijing earlier today, the MX2 comes with a Samsung-made 1.6GHz, Cortex-A9 quad-core SoC dubbed "MX5S," along with 2GB of RAM, a 30-percent faster GPU, a 4.4-inch 347ppi (1,280 x 800) gapless display with 3.15mm bezel and efficient "New Mode 2" technology (the description of which sounds like IGZO to us), an improved eight-megapixel BSI F/2.4 camera and a choice of 16GB, 32GB or 64GB of built-in memory. There's also a front-facing camera, dual-mic noise cancellation, MHL video output, S/PDIF audio output, a non-removable 1,800mAh battery, Bluetooth 4.0 and HSPA+ radio at 2,100MHz (2G at 900/1800). As before, the white double injection-molded back cover can be taken off to access the SIM card slot, but there should also be various color options in the near future. Read on for more info, and do also check out the official introduction video after the break.

BlackBerry 10 may be just around the bend, but it seems that's not going to stop RIM from launching a new handset. A leaked document posted by Crackberry has revealed the specs of theQWERTY-toting BlackBerry Patagonia 9620 -- there's BB OS 7.1 running the show with a 1.2GHz Qualcomm MSM8655processor under the hood, mated with 768MB RAM. Par for the course, the display is a 2.44-inch, 480 x 360 affair, and you can also find 2GB of storage augmentable via microSD, a 5-megapixel rear snapper, GPS, WiFi and PTT support along for the ride -- if the source is to be believed. Info on pricing and the exact release date of the apparently budget smartphone is MIA as yet, but Nextel Mexico has it pegged for a December outing. You can sign up for a release notification if you're covered and can't curb your buying itch before BB10's entry-level offeringsland.

Easy certification, updates and free-to-play support a must says Xbox co-creator
Ed Fries, who has been contracted as an advisor to the group producing the open-source Android console the Ouya, has said that he expects Nintendo, Microsoft and Sony to emulate some of the aspects of the Ouya - namely a streamlined certification process, relaxed licencing regulations and full support of free-to-play mechanics.
Speaking to GameInformer, Fries spoke about the changes in market forces which have come about since the launch of the first Xbox, which he played a major part in creating.
"It's getting harder and harder for the traditional consoles to ignore the Apple kind of experience," said Fries. "Anybody can develop for the platform, certification is a relatively cheap and painless thing, and in the old days of consoles there are all sorts of myths and legends that say that's a bad thing to do. That's why the game business melted down in '84, there was too much junk on the market, but now you've got guys who make games like Fez who can't do an update to their game because it costs too much, if that game was on iOS that wouldn't be a problem, but because it's on XBLA it's a problem.
"Those kinds of ideas have to go away in the next generation. They'll go away in Ouya, they'll go away if Apple brings some kind of product into this space, the console makers like Sony, Nintendo, Microsoft, they have to respond to that, it's just the future. Likewise they have to respond to the free-to-play game model, the world is changing, people want this free-to-play experience, game developers want to build free-to-play experiences and the console ecosystem has to adapt to that. It can't just be $50 product in a box all the time."
Ouya has been funded by a hugely successful Kickstarter program which initially aimed at raising under $1 million but closed with a bankroll of more than $8 million. The console itself will cost $99 and features development tools as standard, enabling any user to create their own free-to-play games. The only restriction being that any game launched for the machine must be free-to-play.

iPhone 5 propels Apple to take leading position over Android devices
New data from Kantar Worldpanel suggests that the launch of the iPhone 5 has propelled iOS back into the leading position in the US handheld market.
For the 12 weeks ending October 28th iOS claimed a 48.1 per cent share of US smartphone sales, leaving Android with 46.7 per cent.
62 per cent of Apple handset sales come from existing Apple owners upgrading to a newer device. 13 per cent are customers switching from Android. 92 per cent of existing Apple owners said they will choose an iPhone the next time they upgrade.
It’s a different story in Europe, however, with Android claiming an 81.7 per cent market share in Spain and 73.9 per cent in Germany. In the UK Android enjoys just 32.7 per cent of the market.

The new Nokia Asha 205 smartphone has become the first mobile device to feature a dedicated Facebook button, offering users quick access to the popular social network.
Following the launch of the dual SIM Nokia Asha 308 and single SIM Nokia Asha 309 earlier this year, Nokia’s latest addition to its more affordable smartphone range aims to keep users within one click of Facebook’s key features.
“People around the world use Facebook Mobile to connect and share with their friends," said Javier Olivan, head of growth, engagement and mobile for Facebook. "We are focused on delivering the best Facebook experience to as many people as possible and our partnership with Nokia perfectly complements our strategy of giving people around the world a rich Facebook experience for keeping in touch with their friends."
Timo Toikkanen, executive vice president, Mobile Phones, Nokia, also added: “Globally, young consumers have increasingly started using Facebook for socialising, keeping in touch and striking new friendships. The launch of the Nokia Asha 205 responds to this growing demand and gives them a unique option for accessing Facebook while on-the-go. We have seen that many people who use Nokia Asha devices are hyper-social and we are proud to partner with Facebook to improve the user experience of those consumers further with the introduction of the Facebook button.â€
The launch of the 205 follows last month’s reports that Nokia would be targeting the world’s emerging markets with its Asha smartphone series.

Sales on Amazon.co.uk up more than threefold.
Amazon EU says that Black Friday was the biggest sales day ever for the Kindle range of devices – Kindle, Kindle Fire, Kindle Fire HD,Kindle Paperwhite – with sales more than three times higher than any other day in the history of Amazon.co.uk.
The online retailer introduced the Kindle Fire to Stateside shoppers a year ago, but the device only reached the UK at the end of this October. However, neither the delay nor the fact Brits don't celebrate Thanksgiving prevented shoppers from buying the tablet, with customers snapping up the £99 Fire as it dropped from the usual £129.
Jorrit Van der Meulen, VP of Kindle EU, said: "In response to strong customer demand we included Kindle Fire in Black Friday deals week, dropping the price to just £99, and the reaction has been incredible.
"Customers purchased more than three times as many Kindle devices on Black Friday than on any other day in its history on Amazon.co.uk, and our previous record was impressive."
Amazon recently boasted that its Kindle Fire sales figures were up following the iPad mini unveiling, but remained cloak and dagger on hard figures just as it has this time around too. The company also claimed theKindle was its best-selling item on Cyber Monday 2011.

Google is now updating its Nexus 4 and Nexus 10 devices with Android 4.2.1 as an OTA (over the air) update, whilst also fixing the now infamous December bug.
With the month of December left out of the People app, users were unable to select the month as a birthday or anniversary on account of it not existing. This bug has however been remedied with the introduction of Android 4.2.1.
The OTA update is going to be deployed gradually, so users could be waiting weeks until the phone receives the new software.
Furthermore, it is thought that Google will also be bringing Android 4.2.1 to the Nexus 7 and Galaxy Nexus in the near future.

New research from bss digital highlights the fact that retailers need to make sure their websites are mobile friendly this Christmas.
The report reveals that nine per cent (approximately one in ten) of shoppers who used a PC to do their Christmas shopping last year will use their smartphones in 2012 instead. When applied to customers between the ages of 18 and 34, this figure becomes one in five.
Regional data reveals that Wales came up top with 93 per cent of people favouring their smartphone or PC to do their Christmas shopping.
James Southgate, client services director at bss digital says: "Our survey found that nearly 10 million people use a smartphone or tablet computer to do their Christmas shopping. In today's tough commercial climate, what company can afford to miss out on even a fraction of that business? But that's exactly what some businesses are doing by not having mobile friendly websites. If a website is not compatible on a handset, a competitor is just a click away."
PCR sister publication ME recently reported that ten per cent of all in-store UK sales will be influenced by smartphones this December, meaning the device could influence a staggering £3.5bn worth of sales.

Synthesizers are notoriously expensive, especially some vintage models, but how'd you like a Korg Polysix for the bargain price of $14.99? Well, as long as you've got an iPad (or a mini), that's now possible with the iPolysix app released today. The '80s-era analog polyphonic synth is "fully replicated," with plenty of additional tools for tablet composers -- the new Polyseq step sequencer, dual Kaoss Pads with chordal support, and a "production environment" with two synths, a drum machine and mixer. You can also publish your creations and remix tracks with other users via the SoundCloud-integrated Polyshare feature. If you're hemming and hawing about a purchase, make up your mind soon, as the app's price doubles on January 1st. You won't find it in the Play store, but the Android Polysix app we saw running on Miselu's Neiro prototype leads us to believe Google's OS won't be excluded from the jam session entirely. Advert / app demo after the break.
