Sony Mobileâs latest addition to its Xperia smartphone range will be making its way into consumersâ hands in Q1 2013.
Although Sony hasnât announced pricing yet, it has cited the Xperia E as an âaffordable additionâ to the range, with Calum MacDougall, director of Xperia marketing at Sony, calling it âperfect for those seeking affordable access to the quality and functionality more traditionally associated with high-end Android smartphones.â
Coming in black, white and pink, the Xperia E will be available in both single and dual SIM versions.
Launching on Android 4.1 jelly Bean, the smartphone comes equipped with a built-in âWALKMANâ application that includes xLOUD audio technology, 3D surround sound and a manual equaliser.
The Xperia E has been designed to help consumers stay on top of cost and power consumption. The data usage application monitors how much is being spent and the extended standby mode increases the standby time up to four times.
When the screen has been in sleep mode for a few minutes, Wi-Fi and data traffic will be disabled and most applications will be inactive to save battery life. However, calling and messaging will continue to work as normal. Once you touch the screen to wake the device up from standby, all functions are back to normal.

The second official beta of XBMC 12 "Frodo" is ready for testing, and if you've been waiting to move up from the nightlies you finally can -- as long as it meets a few requirements, like supporting Neon processor code (most HTC and Samsung devices do). There's a compatibility list of devices known to work, although there are known issues with Android 4.2 that won't be addressed until Beta 3. Also improved in this version is support for the Xbox 360 controller, no matter what platform you're using it on, along with some audio fixes and other tweaks. Hit the source link for the full list of updates or just go straight to the download page if your media device can't wait.

This iPhone 4s is charging without a dock connector because [Tanv28] .
The hack is not for the faint of heart. But if youâve got a precision soldering iron and a stead hand we bet you can pull it off. It starts with disassembly to get at the cable that connects the circuit board to the dock connector. [Tanv28] solders fine enameled wire to pins 16, 23, 25, and 27. The other end of these wires are soldered to the guts from a Powermat inductive charging system. After the connections are made thereâs not enough room under the back cover of the phone for this added bulk. But laminating a second plastic frame onto the assembly will correct for the 1mm difference in thickness. The clip after the break walks through the entire process.
You can see that [Tanv28] also built the charging station into a piece of furniture. We just saw a post last week that used this technique to add Powermat hardware to a shelf.

The company adds that its has a team specifically working on the console's UI as well.

Meanwhile, Apple secured the second place in October with a 17.8 per cent share that rose from 16.3 per cent in July. This was to the expense of LG, which only managed the third spot with a 17.6 per cent share, falling from 18.4 per cent.

With the launch of BlackBerry 10 edging ever closer, the company has rebranded its BlackBerry App World to, simply, BlackBerry World.
The BlackBerry App World web store will become the BlackBerry World web store prior to the BB10 launch event on January 30, 2013, while the BlackBerry World name change will be rolled out to all storefronts as of mid-January 2013.
BlackBerry PlayBook tablet customers will see the updated store name in a future build, while video and music content will still be only available via the separate Music Store and Video Store applications on the BlackBerry PlayBook tablet.
Customers on BlackBerry OS smartphones (OS 5, 6, 7 and 7.1) will also see the updated name and continue to benefit from new titles as they are developed for the BlackBerry OS platform. However the video and music content will not be available.
Developers from across the globe have been creating new apps and games for BlackBerry 10, while other teams at RIM have been meeting with content partners, music labels, networks, and studios to provide a comprehensive catalogue of music and video in one storefront with one login on the userâs BlackBerry 10 smartphone.
This is not the first rebranding story to make the headlines this year. In August it was revealed that Microsoft was in the process of rebranding the Windows Phone Marketplace, while Android Market was rebranded as Google Play in March.

The sense attachment felt by many towards their mobile phone these days is becoming a major contributing factor in the break-up of many relationships, a new study by the University of Maryland has found.
According to the survey, young adults can spend up to seven hours each day using their phone, with some experiencing feeling of withdrawal when separated from their mobile.
Dr James Roberts, of Baylor's Hankamer School of Business, in Texas, said that âinstant messagingâ addiction was driven by âmaterialism and impulsiveness.â He noted: "Mobile phones are a part of our consumer culture. They are not just a consumer tool, but are used as a status symbol. They're also eroding our personal relationships."
Previous studies have found that young adults aged 18-29 send an average of 109.5 texts every day, or around 3,200 messages a month. They receive an additional 113 texts and check their phones 60 times in a typical day, with students spend around seven hours per day interacting with information and communication technology.
It was also reported recently that half of Brits would rather check their tablet than talk to their partner, while a study from the University of Worcester revealed that smartphone users can suffer from hallucinations, stress and obsessions from their mobile, imagining phantom vibrations when they don't receive any activity such as calls or texts.

A report from iFixit has given the new ultra-thin iMac a score of three out of ten for repairs.
iFixit, which specialises in helping people repair their own devices, performed a teardown of the new iMac, calling it âan exercise in disappointmentâ after finding heavy use of adhesive, an LCD screen thatâs fused to the glass screen, and âuser replaceable RAMâ that requires the screen to be unglued and the logic board removed.
Although the new iMacâs won some praise for the fact that the RAM, hard drive and CPU can all be replaced, iFixit noted that: âMost replaceable components (like the RAM) are buried behind the logic board, meaning you'll have to take apart most of the iMac just to gain access to them.â

A village in the Indian state of Bihar has banned women from using mobile phones and imposed heavy fines for those who do.
According to NDTV, elders of the village of Sunderbadi in the staunchly Islamic district of Kishanganj issued a number of edicts in order to implement social reforms.
These include banning women from using mobile phones or from bathing by the roadside. The fine for an unmarried woman caught using a mobile phone is 10,000 rupees, while a married woman faces a fine of 2,000 rupees. The fine for bathing by the roadside has not been publicised.
âMobile phone is the cause of all evils in our society, including increasing love affairs and the incidents of elopement,â said Mohammad Manzoor Alam, who presided over the decisions.

Back in 1982, the video game hardware industry was an untamed, Wild West-esque madhouse of creativity and gimmicks, both of which often traveled hand in hand. One such example of pre-crash insanity was the Vectrex, a game console with a built-in CRT vector-graphics monitor and transparent screen overlays that faux-colorized the display.
Production of the Vectrex ceased in 1984, but mobile developer Rantmedia Games has resurrected the wonky thing as Vectrex Regeneration, an emulation platform for iOS devices. Available for free on the App Store, the app includes the original Vectrex's built-in game Minestorm, as well as indie games that have been developed for the platform since its demise.
Access to 18 further titles from the Vectrex's catalogue, as well as iCade support, can be purchased for $6.99. Eventually, all 29 games ever released for the system will be added as in-app purchases. Unfortunately, the app does notinclude flimsy plastic screen covers like the original did, but we guess you can't have everything.

The Washington Post reports that Apple has finally unveiled their new version of iTunes, overhauling its look and feel and integrating it more closely with the company's iCloud Internet- storage service with one of the biggest upgrades Apple has made to the program with 400 million potential users since its debut more than a decade ago. The new design of iTunes moves away from the spreadsheet format that Apple has featured since its debut and adds more art and information about musicians, movies and television shows. It also adds recommendation features so users can find new material. According to David Pogue of the NY Times Apple has fixed some of the dumber design elements that have always plagued iTunes. 'For years, the store was represented only as one item in the left-side list, lost among less important entries like Radio and Podcasts. Now a single button in the upper-right corner switches between iTunes's two personalities: Store (meaning Apple's stuff) and Library (meaning your stuff).' Unfortunately, Apple hasn't fixed the Search box. As before, you can't specify in advance what you're looking for: an app, a song, a TV show, a book. Whatever you type into the Search box finds everything that matches, and you can't filter it until after you search. It feels like a two-step process when one should do. 'Improvements in visual navigation and a more logical arrangement of tools are good, but for me the biggest positive within iTunes 11 remains its vastly improved performance on all three Macs I've tested it on, including a relatively ancient five-year-old MacBook,' writes Jonny Evans.

Apple claims that the company"wasn't aware during trial that the foreman of the jury that issued a $1.05 billion verdict against Samsung Electronics Co. was involved in a lawsuit with his former employer, Seagate Technology Inc. 'Samsung asked Apple to disclose when it first learned about the litigation between the jury foreman, Velvin Hogan, and Seagate. Apple responded in a filing yesterday in federal court in San Jose, California. Samsung is attempting to get the Aug. 24 verdict thrown out based on claims the trial was tainted by the foreman's failure during jury selection to tell U.S. District Judge Lucy H. Koh, who presided over the case, that he filed for bankruptcy in 1993 and was sued by Seagate."

Sega hasn't exactly had the smoothest of times while trying to launch its old-school (and very popular) Jet Set Radio title on novel platforms. Today, however, the Dreamcast maker announced that its fan-favorite game is now rolling to both iOS and Android. Jet Set Radio will, naturally, be compatible with Cupertino's iPhone, iPod and iPad as well as the majority of handsets and slates that are running some flavor of Google's OS (2.2 and up), with Sega pricing the game at about five bucks -- which, needless to say, is a pretty small amount to pay to virtually skate your way around Tokyo and, you know, graffiti mostly anything you deem worthy enough to tag. Eager to take it for a swirl? Then all you've got to do is hit either of the source links below to get started with the download.

Developer kits for the Ouya were given a ship date of December 28th today, alongside news that the system's software development kit ("ODK") will be available that same day. In case it wasn't already clear how small the Android-powered console is, the folks at Ouya included the picture you see above to further illustrate that point -- the thing is reallysmall. Ouya expects the dev kits to get into backers' hands "within a couple days" of the 28th. Final units are still intended to ship some time in March 2013, though no final date is available just yet.
How different are these dev units from the final run, though? Not that different, we'd guess, considering the company's continued promise that "every Ouya will be a dev console." The only hint given of their difference is a note in today's update calling them, "pretty special." Beyond just getting a jump on game development with the Ouya in mind, dev unit buyers will also be the first to try out Jelly Bean gaming. Of course, if you're a dev unit-level backer and you'd like to share your thoughts with us, we're all ears.

The HTC Windows Phone 8S was announced as a lower-end alternative to its bigger brother, the flagship Windows Phone 8X, but the company has remained relatively quiet about it since. While we're still awaiting official details on pricing and availability across the globe, HTC has filled us in on one crucial nugget of information: it won't be coming to the United States. While we've been suspicious that this might be the case, we had been holding out hope that it might have at least some amount of reach in the US market. Essentially, HTC is focusing all of its stateside efforts on the 8X, its signature device. With that said, we'll still likely see the 8S show up as an unlocked and unsubsidized smartphone on various etailers, so Windows Phone enthusiasts with a penchant for bright colors will want to keep their eyes peeled. Now that we know more about the markets that won't be graced by the presence of the 8S, all we need now is a confirmation on when we can expect it elsewhere. Stay tuned past the break for HTC's official statement.

Apple announced today the release dates for the iPad Mini, 4th-Gen iPad, and iPhone 5 in China. The Wi-Fi versions of the iPad Mini and iPad are expected on December 7, while the iPhone 5 is coming on December 14.
China has become one of Apple biggest markets, so the company has worked hard to get its products past the red tape that stymies many manufacturers.
"Our conversations during our meetings and casual consumer interactions during our China trips tell us that the iPad Mini will take off like wildfire in China," Topeka Capital Markets analyst Brian White wrote in a research report obtained by Mercury News. "The smaller form factor and lower price point, we believe Apple will be able to sell the iPad mini in meaningful volumes."
The 4G LTE versions of the iPad Mini and iPad were not mentioned, but carriers China Telecom and China Unicom will be selling the Wi-Fi device, so a further announcement could be forthcoming. China Mobile will be not stock the new iPhone at all, according to a report by The Next Web.

"Imagine treating your phone like a piece of paper. Roll it up. Drop it. Squish it in your backpack. Step on it â without any damage. Researchers are working on just such handsets â razor-thin, paper-like and bendable. There have already been prototypes, attracting crowds at gadget shows. But rumors abound that next year will see the launch of the first bendy phone. Numerous companies are working on the technology â LG, Philips, Sharp, Sony and Nokia among them â although reports suggest that South Korean phone manufacturer Samsung will be the first to deliver. Samsung flavors smartphones with so-called flexible OLED (Organic Light Emitting Diode) technology, and is confident that they will be 'very popular among consumers worldwide.' Their screens will be 'foldable, rollable, wearable and more, [and] will allow for a high degree of durability through their use of a plastic substrate that is thinner, lighter and more flexible than conventional LCD technology,' says a Samsung spokesperson.'

Appleâs iPhone 5 is now available in the US contract-free, besides the standard two-year contract option.
The unlocked iPhone 5 will be priced at $649 for the 16GB version, $749 for 32GB and $849 for 64GB. Both the black and the white model will be available.
Shipping time is currently estimated at one week, while consumers will be limited to a maximum of two purchases.
Meanwhile, Apple has acknowledged that unlocked iPhone 5s will be GSM-only, which means that they will support AT&T and T-Mobile in the US, but will not work on CDMA bands.
Furthermore, 9to5Macâs sources have hinted that Apple could begin selling the unlocked iPhone 5 at its retail stores within the next week.
