New Strategy Analytics data claims global tablet shipments reached 24.7m units in Q3, with Android powering 41 per cent – 10.2m – of the sales for the first time ever.
The Google OS's stronghold is up from 29 per cent in Q3 2011, though iOS tablet shipments slipped to 57 per cent – 14m – in Q3 2012 from 64 per cent last year.
Peter King, director at Strategy Analytics, said: "Global tablet shipments reached 24.7 million units in Q3 2012, rising a sluggish 43 percent from 17.2 million in Q3 2011.
"Demand for tablets slowed due to ongoing economic uncertainty and consumers holding off purchases in anticipation of multiple new models, like the iPad Mini, during the upcoming Q4 holiday season.
"Apple's slowdown allowed the Android community to make gains and Android's global share of the tablet market now stands at a record 41 percent."
Neil Mawston, executive director, Strategy Analytics, said: "No single Android vendor comes close to Apple in volume terms at the moment, but the collective weight of dozens of hardware partners, such as Asus, Samsung and Nook, is helping Google's Android platform to register a growing presence in tablets."
Other stats show that Microsoft secured a two per cent tablet share during the quarter, which is set to spike with the forthcoming release of the Surface tablet in Q4.

With Apple’s iPad mini set to hit shelves next month, US chat show host, comedian and all-round tech head Conan O’Brien has put his own spin on the company’s latest ad campaign with the following video.
It follows his recent mockery of the Samsung Apple patent disputesand Kindle Fire HD.
While the iPad mini is sure to cause yet another consumer frenzy upon its release, O’Brien seems far from convinced that Apple’s introduction of yet another mobile device to the market is entirely necessary.
So, clearly not enamoured with the brand’s “minute” product changes, O’Brien instead calls into question the purchasing motives of the products’ buyers…

World's richest company rakes in $8bn in profits as it sells 27 million iPhones
Apple has reported record profits and revenue for its fourth quarter after shifting just under 27 million iPhones in the last three months.
Quarterly revenue reached $36 billion, with a quarterly net profit hitting a hugely impressive $8.2 billion.
This means that revenue has risen by almost $8 billion compared to the same quarter last year, with revenue also up $2 billion.
Apple stated that internatinal sales accounted for 60 per cent of the revenue made in the last three months.
As well as selling 26.9 million iPhones, a 58 per cent growth on unit sales from last year, the company also sold 14 million iPads and 4.9 million Macs.

Samsung says its flagship Galaxy S3 smartphone has been a key driver in raising profit margins.
The South Korean firm’s net profit was 6.5tn won (£3.7bn), up a massive 91 per cent from a year earlier.
It wasn’t just the success of its Galaxy range that helped Samsung achieve this profit, its display panels were also a big factor.
“Samsung's solid performance is mainly attributed to increased sales of handheld phones and stronger demand for display panels,” read Samsung’s official statement.
“The Mobile Communications Business posted 26.25 trillion won in revenue for the quarter, accounting for more than half of Samsung's total revenue. As for the display panel segment, increased shipments of Organic Light-Emitting Diode (OLED) and Liquid Crystal Display panels used in tablets and smartphones, as well as TVs drove up profitability.”
It seems Samsung’s devices really are cool enough…

After losing its appeal against the recent UK ruling that Samsung did not copy the iPad’s design, Apple has published its apology…if you can call it that.
Back in July, Samsung won its case against Apple over the design of the Galaxy Tab 10. Apple appealed the verdict, which required the company to run adverts proclaiming that Samsung did not copy the iPad.
It has now posted the apology on its UK site, in which it focuses on the fact that the judge ruled Samsung’s Galaxy Tab 10 was ‘not as cool’ as the iPad.
“The design looks like an object the informed user would want to pick up and hold. It is an understated, smooth and simple product. It is a cool design," reads a quote from the judge on Apple’s site.
Talking about the Galaxy tablets the judges comment continues: “They do not have the same understated and extreme simplicity which is possessed by the Apple design. They are not as cool."
Although Apple states in the apology that there is no injunction in respect of the registered design in force anywhere in Europe, the tech giant couldn’t resist pointing out that a German court came to a different conclusion regarding the same patent.
The statement finishes with: “So while the U.K. court did not find Samsung guilty of infringement, other courts have recognised that in the course of creating its Galaxy tablet, Samsung wilfully copied Apple's far more popular iPad.”

October 26th, 2012, 23:37 Posted By: wraggster
With mobile users sharing an increasingly intimate relationship with their phones these days, it’s hardly surprsing to hear that mobile devices serve as an ideal host for all manner of germs, bacteria and diseases.
Among the most common bugs passed on as a result of the close proximity of mobiles to our person are flu, pinkeye and diarrhoea. And, while there are certain products on the market aimed at ridding our devices of any residual filth, they can also risk damaging the phone.
In a recent lab test by HML Labs of Muncie, eight phones were chosen at random from a Chicago office, revealing that while the mobiles showed no trace of E. coli or staphylococci bacteria, they all showed unusually high numbers of coliforms, a bacteria indicating fecal contamination.
However, of the eight phones selected, the lab detected around 2,700 and 4,200 units of coliform bacteria. To put that into perspective, in drinking water the limit is less than 1 unit per 100 ml.
Dr. Cain, of the American Academy of Family Physicians, explained: "People are just as likely to get sick from their phones as from handles of the bathroom. These are the unintended consequences of new technology that we haven't seen before so we don't know all the risks yet."
With regards to cleaning our mobiles, HML then tested four different cleaning methods, including water, alcohol, Windex Original glass cleaner and Nice 'N Clean electronic cleaning wipes. Results showed alcohol to be the best performer, cleaning almost 100 per cent of the bacteria. Plain water proved to be the least effective method.
Such consequences are in many ways an inevitability, after it was revealed last month that mobile phones carry ten times more germs than the average toilet, along with revelations that many are more than content to use their devices whilst on the toilet and during sex.

Whoa there! The next Nexus just got an early reveal over at UK retailer Carphone Warehouse. Delivery is currently pegged for October 30th and apparently it's got brand new Android 4.2 (or Android 4.1.2 -- the listing mixes in both). The preorder screen confirms plenty of details we've already heard, including that 4.7-inch 1,280 x 768 display, Snapdragon S4 processor and 8-megapixel camera. Unfortunately, at least according to the phone seller, there's only 8GB of storage and no microSD card slot. Other curious parts include a "360-degree camera", whatever that is, and an on-screen render that's been previously been identified as a custom ROM. Diving into the supposed feature list, we're intrigued to see whether "gesture typing" will form a part of Google's new Android build -- the Carphone Warehouse compares it to Swype's finger-dragging input method.
Price-wise, it looks like you could get the handset for free on contracts over £31 per month, with both O2 and Vodafone named as prospective networks for the device in the UK -- but no news here on whether the 4G-capable EE will offer an LTE iteration. Excited? Good, because we're going to hear plenty more on this next week.

Google's Android operating system will be used on more computing devices than Microsoft's Windowswithin four years, data from research firm Gartner showed on Wednesday, underlining the massive shift in the technology sector. At the end of 2016, there will be 2.3 billion computers, tablets and smartphones using Android software, compared with 2.28 billion Windows devices, Gartner data showed."The comparison would make less sense if Android was strictly for phones, and Windows was strictly for desktops-with-keyboards, but gets interesting as the devices on which each system runs overlap ever more.

Apple seems determined to achieve world domination this year, releasing the iPhone 5 last month and following it down with the iPad mini on Tuesday night.
That wasn't all the firm released though and surprisingly announced a 'fourth generation iPad', which comes just seven months after the (new) iPad 3 release.
The differences between the two are internal, with the iPad 4 sporting an A6X processor as opposed to the A5X found in the iPad 3 – a device consumers complained had overheating issues.
Toluna QuickSurveys quizzed 2,000 iPad to determine their thoughts on the new devices and found that 50 per cent of iPad 3 owners are unhappy with the iPad 4's arrival, which has consequently made their devices outdated in under a year.
Meanwhile, 45 per cent of iPad 2 owners and 40 per cent of original iPad owners are unimpressed with the news.
It seems Apple can't get away from complaints about its Apple Maps app, with 25 per cent of respondents believing the removal of Google Maps from iOS was a schoolboy error.
Opinions are slightly brighter about the 7.9-inch mini though, as 15 per cent are certain they'll buy one, with a third saying they'll probably buy one.
The Q4 launch also looks to work in favour for the mini, as one-fifth plan to buy a device as a Christmas gift.

AdaptiveMobile recently warned that a large number of battery-saving apps have actually been designed to scam users with premium texts and not conserve power.
Antivirus provider Bitdefender now supports the news with data that shows Android 'Battery Doctor' has come out on top as the most aggressive smartphone malware threat in the UK.
The firm conducted the research over a nine month period to find the battery optimisation app contains the Android.Trojan.FakeDoc virus, which intercepts Gmail messages and location info before broadcasting them to a server.
The virus was at its peak between April and May when it accounted for 76 per cent of all discovered malware.
It's not just battery apps to worry about though, as the 'Slot Machine' game on Google Play has been found to store malicious adware which can display a high level of pop ups and manipulate home screen shortcuts with unwanted promos.
Despite this, the app has achieved more than half a million downloads.
Alexandru Balan, chief security researcher at Bitdefender, said: "The mobile apps industry is facing a period of rapid evolution towards radically more aggressive and commercially-oriented attacks.
"Smartphones, our 24 hour connection to the internet, will become the first target for those looking to steal our banking credentials, credit card numbers and other personal information."

Just earlier today we reported that Android devices in the UK are coming under fire from shifty battery apps and games.
Of course, mobile malware and viruses are a worldwide issue, which is why T-Mobile USA has teamed up with security provider Lookout to install a native protection app on all of its devices out-of-the-box.
Automatic App Security will be preloaded on selected devices this year, though will be found on the majority of Android smartphones and tablets in 2013.
The fact the app is native means that the device will be protected once it's turned on, while there's no registration or setup required.
Ian McKerlich, VP of product management, T-Mobile USA, said: "T-Mobile wants our customers to enjoy the full benefits of the smartphone or tablet experience, including worry-free access to applications, which is why we are taking extra measures to protect their devices, privacy and data.
"Lookout already scans more than 36 million applications for T-Mobile customers every day. Preloading Automatic App Security on our devices allows even more customers to enjoy the security and peace of mind of knowing that they’re protected with the leading Android mobile security and antivirus app."

We noticed during the iPhone 5 launch that Apple had a big caveat with its Lightning to 30-pin adapter: no video or iPod out support. Now that the new iPads are here with that same connector, the problem's been partially rectified -- for a sum. Namely, you can grab the Lightning to VGA or digital AV (HDMI) adapters for a rather princely $49, though there's no sign of any iPod support yet. If you're still holding out for generic models instead, you may want to rethink that plan, as there's a control chip inside each, and so far only Apple holds the authentication keys. Also, a new $19 12W USB power adapter (which connects directly to the Lightning port) has also appeared for the 3rd and 4th generation iPads, bumping the previous version's 10W -- meaning your slate might get charged a bit quicker.

If you're one of the root-and-ROM brigade, it's also likely that you have a keen eye on what goes on under the hood of your mobile OS. It might, then, come as a surprise to users of CyanogenMod, that a line of code could have been logging your phone-unlock gestures and patterns. Gabriel Castro, a developer involved in the project, was surprised to spot the rogue logging, that seems to have been part of an update regarding grid sizes for screen locks in August. While there is no serious compromise to users (gaining access to the log file would involve a lot of work, and direct access to the phone) it will certainly be considered an unwelcome addition by many, and a reminder that open-source relies heavily on trust. The issue has been resolved in an update, so if you're at all unsettled at the thought, perhaps now is the time to get the latest build.

We were expecting just one new tablet launch, but in the event, we got two - one of which came out of nowhere. The reveal of the iPad Mini surprised nobody, but the unveiling of a fourth generation iPad just seven months after the reveal of its predecessor managed to escape the notice of the usually well-informed Apple rumour mill. As it happens, both launches proved to be rather controversial, each in their own way.
Pricing and positioning of the new iPad mini is curious to say the least. Just over a month ago in reaction to Apple's last event, I wondered whatever happened to the iPad Mini, suggesting that the £249/$299 iPod Touch was an excellent addition to a range that included the £329/$399 iPad 2 and the £399/$499 new iPad. Surely Apple wouldn't launch against itself with the iPad mini?
"iPad mini will undoubtedly expand Apple's market but it makes the new iPod Touch look even more pricey and the older more expensive iPad 2 now looks totally irrelevant. Meanwhile the Nexus 7 is still £80 cheaper"
In essence, that is exactly what it has done. At £269/$329, the gap between the new tablet and the fifth gen Touch is wafer-thin, and while Apple was keen to point out the advantages the mini has over the Nexus 7 during its conference, the fact is that it's £80 more expensive (£100 if you're happy with an 8GB Android). The iPad mini looks to be the superior product for all the reasons Apple came up with at the event, but the bottom line is that in acknowledging the cheap 7-inch tablets with their own version, the firm may well have helped to emphasise just how inexpensive they are in comparison - and how pricey the iPod Touch is too.
The fact that Apple is still selling the iPad 2 at £329/$399 when they have a more refined, more portable version that's significantly cheaper is equally mystifying. Looking at the specs for the new Mini, it is essentially identical to the iPad 2 in almost every way - specifically in its 1024x768 resolution display, driven by a dual-core A5 processor. Battery life is still at the signature iPad ten-hour level, storage is identical, and it features a number of other features that actually improve upon its older, more expensive counterpart - specifically the provision of the new Lightning connector and the option of a 4G LTE modem.

The new iPad Mini was launched last night – a device which, according to Apple's senior vice president of industrial design, Jonathan Ives, is a ‘concentrated version’ of the iPad.
Since doing such a sterling job at the launch of the original iPad, Ives seems to be the post-Jobs era stand-in for the great man. Apple calls upon Ives to wax lyrical about magic while CEO Tim Cook talks about how quickly their undersupplied retail partners sell out of stock. And then they wheel out the new product.
It’s a shame, then, that Apple has not been able to apply the magic of its launch events to the design process. With the iPad Mini, Apple is following the pack in every way.
There are already other players in the small screen tablet market and they’re all offering a far more compelling price point than Apple. This launch looks like Apple’s management had a meeting where they saw these form factors doing well and said “we need to get the top-end of this market”. That’s fine, but is it innovative? No.
The hardware is pretty much what was found in the iPad 2, only this time it’s in a much smaller packaging. Diminutive dimensions seemed to be the focus of this launch, and not just for the iPad. The new iMac and the new MacBook are super thin too. Shame Intel got there first.
Even the much vaunted ‘sharper’ screen is more of a workaround than an innovation. The display resolution is the same but the panel is smaller. That’s not a credit to Apple, it’s a credit to the manufacturers of Apple’s screens – Samsung.
Of course you can give them some credit for managing to get it out there ahead of the launch of Microsoft’s touch-specific operating system, Windows 8, and its flagship product, the Surface. But this perhaps indicates a new kind of cynicism within Apple. This coupled with the litigious activity lately, makes it look like a company that’s out of ideas.
I have no doubt that there are those who will disagree with me. But I don’t think anyone can really call this the kind of innovation that we’ve come to expect from a company like Apple.

Revealing the iPad mini wasn't enough for Apple, as the firm has also unveiled a 'fourth generation' iPad.
Why release another when there was a new iPad released back in March, you ask?
Well, Amazon souped up its original Kindle Fire at the Fire HD launch and Apple seems to have followed suit.
There's no difference in terms of size – it still measures at 9.7-inches – but this time comes with an A6X chip which is designed to double the graphics and processing performance of the A5X found in the iPad 3.
As with the iPad mini and iPhone 5, the fourth generation iPad sports Lightning connector support, while it has wi-fi only and wi-fi and cellular connectivity options.
Wi-fi models will be available from Friday, November 2nd priced at £399 for 16GB, £479 for 32GB and £559 for the 64GB.
Wi-fi and cellular models will ship a couple weeks after the wi-fi only, with pricing at £499 for the 16GB, £579 for the 32GB, £659 for the 64GB.
