Tablets are primarily game-playing devices, according to a new study by Flurry, a mobile analytics firm. Flurry looked at 6 billion application sessions across 500 million smart devices, and found that tablets were used for gaming much more than smartphones were, and for longer periods of time. "Further reinforcing that tablets are 'media machines' is the fact that consumers spend 71 percent more of their time using games on tablets they spend doing so on smartphones," said Peter Farago, vice president of marketing for Flurry.
Smartphone users skew younger than tablet users, on average, 30 versus 34 years of age. Smartphone users are more often male (56 percent to 44 percent) while tablet users are evenly divided by gender (51 percent male). Tablets show a higher usage in the from 7 pm to 10 pm than smart phones, and slightly lower usage during the day.

Apple has raised the prices on apps sold in the European version of the App Store, ostensibly due to currency differences.
According to Macworld UK, the minimum price for an app rose from €0.79 to €0.89 and the change was reflected across all pricing tiers with apps that were previously priced at €4.99 bumped up to €5.49.
The profit split between the app’s developers and Apple remains more or less the same, with the two parties getting 39 per cent and 61 per cent respectively.
Despite the fact that the Euro-Dollar exchange rate remains more or less as it was at the beginning of this year, Apple spokesman Alan Hely is reported to have justified the price hike by saying: “From time to time Apple adjusts prices of products in countries due to changes in exchange rates.”

This time last year, Rockstar Games announced an imminent mobile release of Grand Theft Auto III to mark the gritty mafia-based console game's 10th anniversary.
Now, the games publisher is giving the Scarface-inspired GTA: Vice City a mobile debut to mark the ten year milestone since original release, with a version to hit Android and iOS by the end of the year.
Sam Houser, founder of Rockstar Games, said: "Grand Theft Auto: Vice City gave players the freedom of a massive open-world in one of the most iconic and vibrant settings ever realised in a game.
"It was a defining moment in the series and we're delighted to be celebrating its 10th anniversary this year with a stunning, updated version for phones and tablets."
The 80s set game is set to bring high-res graphics and a number of enhancements exclusive to mobile.

Last month, there were a number of rumours about Apple taking a plunge into the music streaming pool, joining the likes of Pandora, Spotify, Rdio et al.
The whispers have resurfaced again, this time from Bloombergsaying that the iPad maker is in talks with 'major music labels' and could secure partnerships by the middle of November (2012) for an official Q1 2013 launch.
In particular, Apple's service would be a blow to market leader, Pandora, which experienced an 86 per cent mobile revenue growth year-on-year.
The Apple offering is expected to run on an ad-supported revenue model and the firm is said to be pushing for exclusive access to release songs early.

American mobile consumers can’t make their minds up.
A significant percentage of smartphone buyers in the US have a change of heart in-store before purchasing their mobiles, a recent research conducted by BDS Marketing has revealed.
The survey, which was undertaken by 900 consumers who had purchased a television, smartphone, or tablet PC in the past 60 days, showed that 26 per cent of smartphone buyers opted for a different brand once in the store. Similarly, TV buyers were almost equally influenced in store with 25 per cent changing their mind before parting with their cash. However, tablet consumers appear far less malleable, with only 11 per cent succumbing to the in-store influence.
50 per cent of the smartphone buyers that took part in the survey claimed that they had a specific product in mind before entering the store, while 44 per cent had a general idea of what they were looking for.
When revealing what had the greatest influence on their in store decisions, the largest percentage cited price. However, the research showed that the most significant factor on a one-to-five scale was seeing the product in store. And, in 13 per cent of cases, the consumer changed brands following a recommendation from a sales associate.
Sean Wargo, senior director of Business Intelligence for BDS, commented: "Nowadays, we often believe consumers do their research at home and then go to the store set on buying a given brand or model, but this isn't entirely the case. Sales and promotions in the store do have an impact, but so does the associate, making them a key component of the selling process and an important target for in-store marketing efforts."

A little over a year ago, an iPhone 4s prototype walked into a San Francisco bar, prompting acontroversial manhunt by a now-deceased Apple investigator and the SFPD. Now, Wired reports that a Nexus 4 prototype walked into a San Francisco bar last month, prompting Google to sic its security team on 'Sudsy,' a San Francisco bartender who notified Google that he'd found their phone, which was slated to make its debut at a since-cancelled Android event on Oct. 29. When the 'Google Police' showed up at the bar, Sudsy's co-worker sent the 'desperate' Google investigator on a wild goose chase which landed him in an under-siege SFPD Station, from which he and Sudsy's lawyer had to be escorted out of under the watch of police in full riot gear with automatic weapons so the pair could arrange a 1 a.m. pickup of the phone."

Assuming you were suitably impressed by Apple's show earlier this week, you can now begin queuing for one of its new iPads, whether regular or mini-sized. The WiFi-only versions start shipping November 2nd, with cellular equipped models due mid-month. If you need to see all the specs lined up next to each other we have comparisons between models old and new right here. Of course, if you need an alternative, Microsoft's Surface should start showing up on doorsteps today, and we're expecting to see some refreshed competition at Google's event next week. The choice is yours, hit the link below to see all of your options.

Unless we're looking at one of the most elaborately photographed fakes in the world, this is the Nexus 10. With the Nexus 7 apparently going over quite well at just $199, it was only ever a matter of time before the Nexus family expanded to house a 10-incher. With Google's own Vic Gundotra posting imagesfrom a unit that he's using at some exotic locale, it seems that another unit has slipped beneath the camera at BriefMobile. The site has managed to apprehend one of the 10.1-inch slates, and in turn has discovered quite the bounty of information.
Internally, there's (reportedly) a dual-core, Cortex-A15-based 1.7GHz Samsung Exynos 5250, a Mali-T604 GPU, 2GB of RAM, 16GB of internal storage (though no microSD expansion slot), a 5 megapixel rear-facing camera, NFC / WiFi, Bluetooth 4.0 and a Super AMOLED panel with a drool-worthy 2,560 x 1,600 screen resolution -- yeah, that's well into "Retina" territory at 298.9 pixels per inch. You may recognize that Exynos 5250 from Google's recently released $249 Chromebook, but here, it's being used to push Android 4.2. Those hungry for more can visit the source link, but don't go in hoping to extract an asking price.
Update: Well, if the pictures weren't enough, BriefMobile has just popped a five-second long video of the device, which you can glance at after the break. Don't get too excited, however, as it's merely just someone going from the home screen into Chrome.

Rockstar is to add to its Grand Theft Auto iOS library by releasing 10th Anniversary Edition of GTA Vice City.
The studio has already enjoyed success on Apple and Google’s mobile platforms with former DS and PSP hit GTA Chinatown Wars and PS2 classic GTA III.
The release will apparently boast “several enhancements unique to the iOS and Android platforms”.
Rockstar is also planning some wider activity to celebrate the game, which some still regard as the strongest release to date.
“To celebrate the 10th anniversary, there will be a series of commemorative assets released, including never-before-seen artwork and a brand new anniversary trailer highlighting some of the most iconic scenes and music from the game,” the studio stated.
“In addition, a limited run of collectable promotional items will be made available for purchase through the Rockstar Warehouse, with select items also available via online giveaways.”

We recently discussed news of a UK court ruling in which the judge decided Apple must publicly acknowledge that Samsung's Galaxy Tab did not infringe upon the iPad's design, both on the Apple website and in several publications. The acknowledgement has now been posted, and it's anything but apologetic. It states the court's ruling, helpfully referring to "Apple's registered design No. 000018607-0001," and quotes the judges words as an advertisement. The judge wrote, "The informed user's overall impression of each of the Samsung Galaxy Tablets is the following. From the front they belong to the family which includes the Apple design; but the Samsung products are very thin, almost insubstantial members of that family with unusual details on the back. They do not have the same understated and extreme simplicity which is possessed by the Apple design. They are not as cool." They go on to mention German and U.S. cases which found in Apple's favor. Apple's statement concludes, "So while the U.K. court did not find Samsung guilty of infringement, other courts have recognized that in the course of creating its Galaxy tablet, Samsung willfully copied Apple's far more popular iPad."

October 27th, 2012, 21:46 Posted By: wraggster
With mobile users sharing an increasingly intimate relationship with their phones these days, it’s hardly surprsing to hear that mobile devices serve as an ideal host for all manner of germs, bacteria and diseases.
Among the most common bugs passed on as a result of the close proximity of mobiles to our person are flu, pinkeye and diarrhoea. And, while there are certain products on the market aimed at ridding our devices of any residual filth, they can also risk damaging the phone.
In a recent lab test by HML Labs of Muncie, eight phones were chosen at random from a Chicago office, revealing that while the mobiles showed no trace of E. coli or staphylococci bacteria, they all showed unusually high numbers of coliforms, a bacteria indicating fecal contamination.
However, of the eight phones selected, the lab detected around 2,700 and 4,200 units of coliform bacteria. To put that into perspective, in drinking water the limit is less than 1 unit per 100 ml.
Dr. Cain, of the American Academy of Family Physicians, explained: "People are just as likely to get sick from their phones as from handles of the bathroom. These are the unintended consequences of new technology that we haven't seen before so we don't know all the risks yet."
With regards to cleaning our mobiles, HML then tested four different cleaning methods, including water, alcohol, Windex Original glass cleaner and Nice 'N Clean electronic cleaning wipes. Results showed alcohol to be the best performer, cleaning almost 100 per cent of the bacteria. Plain water proved to be the least effective method.
Such consequences are in many ways an inevitability, after it was revealed last month that mobile phones carry ten times more germs than the average toilet, along with revelations that many are more than content to use their devices whilst on the toilet and during sex.
