Valuation of world's richest company drops by 20 per cent despite impressive sales of iPhone 5 and iPad mini
Apple’s valuation has dropped by £80 billion in just two months.
As reported by MCV, the overall valuation of the world’s richest firm has dropped 20 per cent since the iPhone 5 was launched.
On September 21st, the company was worth approximately $660 billion, but this has now dropped to $530bn.
This is despite selling a hugely impressive five million iPhone 5’s in its opening weekend, which also shattered the number of pre-orders made for the iPhone 4S, as well as selling more than three million iPad Mini’s and iPad 4’s in the opening weekend.
It is unclear why shares in the company have fallen so far, although the increased competition from the likes of Google and Samsung are likely to be factors.

Samsung’s flagship smartphone beat Apple’s iPhone 4S to become the world’s bestselling handset in the last quarter.
18 million Galaxy S3s were shipped in Q3, iPhone 4S managed 16.2 million over the same period. Samsung’s smartphone accounted for 11 per cent of all smartphones shipped worldwide.
Although Apple’s iPhone 4S fell behind the S3, analysts estimate that six million iPhone 5’s where shipped in Q3. It is expected that the iPhone will overtake the Galaxy S3 once again in Q4.
Samsung announced last week that the Samsung Galaxy S3 hasmoved 30 million units in just five months, making it the company’s most successful phone to date.

The PlayPad and the PlayPad Pro controllers from Nyko have just reported for Android gaming duties, each carrying a $39.99 sticker. There's no sign of the multicolored options we saw back in June, but the PlayPad does come in black or white and is bundled with a carry case and a folding stand for phones and tablets, while its larger and apparently more ergonomic sibling is offered only in black and is a GameStopexclusive. The wireless duo latch on to Android (3.0 or greater) devices using Bluetooth and are optimized for those with a Tegra processor, such as the Nexus 7 and the HTC One X+. There's an app -- called Playground -- which lets either controller work with legacy titles that don't specifically support its Bluetooth instructions, along with a mouse mode, PC and Mac support, and even the option to play on iOS devices loaded with iCade games. Sure, these controllers may not have faux-recoil or venomous branding, but perhaps they don't need to -- especially since they're cheaper than some of the competition.

Apple was ordered to pay $368 million today to a software company named VirnetX over patents related to Apple's FaceTime technology. Apple engineers testified they didn't pay attention to any patents when building FaceTime. 'The jury, which had sat through the five-day trial, ruled that Apple infringed two patents: one for a method of creating a virtual private network (VPN) between computers, and another for solving DNS security issues. ... It's not the first time VirnetX has won a payout from a major tech firm: the company bagged $105.7m from Microsoft two years ago, and it may not be the last either. VirnetX has a separate case against Apple pending with the International Trade Commission and it has court cases against Cisco, Avaya and Siemens scheduled for trial next year.'"It's not all bad news for Apple today, though — according to Ars, they've won a new patent for a rounded rectangle (D670,286).

The new version of Epic’s Unreal Development Kit has support for iOS 6 and the latest range of Apple devices, including the iPhone 5 and iPad mini.
The development kit now supports Apple’s Retina display. There have also so been optimisations for the iPad mini and iPad 4, including the A6X processor. Current games can also be optimised to support the iPad 4 using UE3.
Feature-wise, Epic has added Unreal Landscape, a terrain editor, to UDK on mobile devices. It includes UE3 mobile material system, is compatible with the Emulate Mobile Features setting and the Mobile Previewer tool and has support for morphing LOD and PhysX collision.
There is a new tool, Mobile Shader Analyzer, which determines which materials are creating particular shaders, why they are different and includes other useful applications.
In addition to these primary features, there is a Perforce Setup Wizard for setting up a new Perforce server via the UDK installer. Develop can also start projects fro m scratch using bare minimum code and content.

ZTE's marketing chief, Lu Qian Hao, has tweeted out a picture to China's Weibo site of a previously unseen Windows Phone handset, along with a few telling specs: 5.9-inch display, 1920 x 1080 resolution and DTS audio tech. That would put it into flagship territory, and perhaps tempt buyers away from a smartphone and tablet combo in favor of one big daddy phablet like this -- if it ever came to be, of course. Considering the device is sporting a WP7 logo and that WP8 doesn't even support full HD yet, it could just be a ruse on ZTE's part, so don't put that Nexus 7 on eBay just yet.

Guitar Hero's time in the spotlight is long since over, but co-creator Charles Huang has his sights set on what he believes will be the next big phenomenon: mobile phones as full living room gaming experiences. With Green Throttle Games, a 12-person startup, Huang is looking to launch a special game controller next year that leverages Android smartphones and tablets. The controller connects wirelessly to your Android device, which can be plugged into an HDTV with a cable.
Green Throttle Games is the latest company, following Ouya and MOGA, to look to Android as a console alternative. “Mobile gaming is exploding, and new smart devices are becoming powerful alternatives to traditional consoles,” Huang toldGamesBeat. “We just need a simple and fun way for people to play games both on the go and on the couch. Our mission is to create great game experiences that bring people together - a big-screen experience where you can just start playing games on a television, as simple as that.”
Huang and company will be offering a software development kit to enable developers to adapt their games to work with the controller. Additionally, Green Throttle Games plans to partner with game companies to make its own first-party games that will allow for two-player action on the same TV screen.
“We want to change the phone into a full console experience so you can enjoy first-person shooter games and racing games,” Huang continued. “You don't need the game console for that. We are reimagining games for the living room.”
Ultimately, Huang sees his controller as something that could disrupt the traditional $60 console game business. “Publishers might have a vested interest in the $60 game, but developers might be able to see what is possible,” said Huang. “The television wars are coming. There is a global set of players.”
There are plenty of people who don't think phones can be used to replace consoles in this way, but Huang doesn't mind the skepticism at all.
“With Guitar Hero, there was a lot of skepticism,” he said. “I feel more comfortable with skepticism. If it were obvious, lots of people would do it. But the trends in the industry are moving this way. It is on an inevitable path. We are doing the next evolution.”

"Even though Apple's App Store has also been friendly enough to offer alternative mapping applications to ameliorate customers upset with Apple's new default Maps app, the Cupertino, Calif.-based company may not be so friendly as to approve a Maps app submission from Google, which used to be responsible for the Maps experience in iOS until the iPhone 5. On Monday, sources at Google familiar with its mapping plans said the chances of Apple approving a dedicated Google Maps app on iOS 6 are 'not optimistic.' Specifically, they pointed to the lack of any mapping app in the 'Find maps for your iPhone' section of the App Store — accessible only via iPhones or iPads — that use the Google Maps APIs to call wirelessly for location, routing or point-of-interest (POI) data."

For all of the clamour surrounding Siri, critics remain undecided whether the virtual assistant is up to scratch. Either way, Apple's move into voice has been echoed by China Mobile, Google, LG,Samsung, among others.
Now, 9to5Mac reports Siri will get a revamp on the iOS 6.1 update, sporting a new feature allowing users to book film tickets through movie bookings service, Fandango.
Interestingly, the news comes following the appointment ofAmazon's former search and navigation chief as the new head of Siri.
Developers claim the service, currently in beta trials, will be compatible for iPhone, iPad and iPod Touch.
Just tell Siri you want to see Breaking Dawn: Part Two and the app will get to work by providing nearby cinema information and show times. The user will then be redirected to the Fandango app to complete the transaction.
Of course, they could always just go straight to the Fandango app and buy a ticket in just a few swipes to bypass Siri altogether.
The feature will only be available to the US, so it seems Apple is still prioritising its American customers, something that was noted at the original launch of Siri when overseas customers couldn't make use of the location-based functionality.
Meanwhile, Fandango recently expanded its mobile ticketing platform on a massive scale to support 300 new cinemas.

Smartphone penetration breaks 50 per cent mark for the first time.
comScore’s MobiLens service has reported that Samsung is the handset manufacturer of choice among US mobile subscribers, taking 26 per cent of the current market share.
Reporting key trends in the US mobile phone industry during a three-month average period, which ended on September 2012, the study surveyed over 30,000 US mobile subscribers, showing Samsung to be the leading handset manufacturer overall with 26 per cent market share.
Meanwhile, the survey also revealed that smartphone penetration has broken the 50 per cent barrier for the very first time, with Android leading that segment of the market with 52.5 per cent of smartphone subscribers, while Apple accounted for 34.3 per cent.
For a full breakdown of the reports findings, please see the figures below.
OEM Market Share
For the three-month average period ending in September, 234 million Americans age 13 and older used mobile devices. Device manufacturer Samsung ranked as the top OEM with 26 per cent of US mobile subscribers (up 0.4 percentage points), followed by LG with 17.7 percent share. Apple continued to close in on the #2 OEM ranking with 17.5 per cent of mobile subscribers (up 2.1 percentage points), followed by Motorola with 10.9 per cent and HTC with 6.2 per cent.

With a production cost of $188 per unit and an RRP of $329, the odd cynic among us may well consider the iPad Mini just a tad overpriced.
The estimated figures, which were revealed this week by HIS iSuppli analysts, indicate that Apple stands to make a 43 per cent profit on each tablet sold.
To put that into perspective, iSuppli found that Google’s 8GB Nexus 7 has a build cost of around $151.75 and a retail price of $200, therefore yielding a gross margin of 24 per cent on each sale.
Apple’s iPad Mini came in for further criticism recently, after US comedian and chat show host Conan O’Brien questioned the need for yet another Apple product

Apple, Disney, Facebook, Google and eBay generate most downloads in the US.
An Interbrand 2012 Best Global Brands report has found that the vast majority of the world’s top 100 global brands have at least one application in the Apple App Store.
Only 12 of the top 100 brands are yet to introduce an app to the store; a figure that has dropped since September 2011, when a total of 18 brands lacked a presence in the Apple App Store.
The Interbrand report, which was published by Distimo, found Apple, Disney, Facebook, Google and eBay to be the most successful of the top 100 brands to feature in the store, having generated the most downloads in the US Apple App Store in September 2012. Unsurprisingly, the most successful of these five brands were Apple and Google.
Despite only being released for the iPhone on September 11th 2012, Google’s YouTube app is the most downloaded application from the app store in the US, while the IKEA Catalogue is the most downloaded promotion-only app.
Of the top 100 global brands, Sony had the most available apps in the Apple App Store with 141, followed closely by Disney with 139. Samsung had the third largest number of available apps with 117, while MTV and SAP each have 72 available.

The latest Kaspersky Lab research shows that Android 2.3.6 Gingerbread was the most popular target for cybercriminals in Q3, closely followed by the latest version Ice Cream Sandwich.
The rapid growth in the number of new mobile malicious programs for Android continued in the third quarter, prompting Kaspersky Lab to identify the platform versions most frequently targeted by cybercriminals.
Android 2.3.6 Gingerbread accounted for 28 per cent of all blocked attempts to install malware, while the second most commonly attacked version was the new 4.0.4 Ice Cream Sandwich, which accounted for 22 per cent of attempts.
“Although Gingerbread was released back in September 2011, due to the segmentation of the Android device market it still remains one of the most popular versions, which, in turn, attracts increased interest from cybercriminals,” commented Yuri Namestnikov, senior malware analyst at Kaspersky Lab.
“The popularity of the most recent version of the Android OS – Ice Cream Sandwich – among virus writers can be explained by the fact that the devices running the latest versions of the OS are more suitable for online activities. Unfortunately, users actively surfing the web often end up on malicious sites.”

Rumors have circulated for weeks that Microsoft intends to release a smartphone of its own design and manufacture, embracing the strategy that drove Apple's iPhone to such enormous success over the past few years. While releasing a branded smartphone offers several potential benefits—look at the revenue and brand recognition Apple's earned as a result of the iPhone—such a strategy also carries significant risks for Microsoft. First, it could alienate smartphone partners such as Nokia, which would find itself competing against a high-end device backed by Microsoft's sizable marketing dollars. (Given the Finnish phone-maker's already perilous situation, that could prove ruinous.) But a branded smartphone could also convince hardware manufacturers that Microsoft really is 'all in' on building its own devices, which could lead to all sorts of drama."

Double whammy attack by the wi-fi versions of iPad 4 and iPad mini.
The wi-fi only versions of the iPad 4 and iPad mini hit stores on Friday (November 2nd), and Apple says the devices have already notched up three million sales between them.
Comparatively, the figure doubles the 1.5m wi-fi only iPad 3 units sold over three days back in March.
Tim Cook, CEO, said: "Customers around the world love the new iPad mini and fourth generation iPad.
"We set a new launch weekend record and practically sold out of iPad minis. We're working hard to build more quickly to meet the incredible demand."
Demand for iPad mini exceeded initial supply and some pre-order customers will have to wait until later this month to receive their shiny 7.9-inch tablets.

Samsung's Galaxy Tab 2 10.1 retained a lot of the specs from its predecessor, with the company slashing the price to duck out of a straight fight with the iPad. In doing so, however, it found itself being bested by mid-range units from ASUS, Acer, and most damningly, the OG Galaxy Tab. Of course, if you've spent the last six months with this slate as your daily driver, then you might have found some other things to love and loathe about it. Let's imagine Samsung is listening, and tell them what you'd like to see in next year's version (aside from, perhaps, just buying a Nexus 10).http://www.engadget.com/2012/11/04/h...xy-tab-2-10.1/
