Following its launch event in San Francisco and the appearance of its first devices last week, the folks behind Windows Phone 8 is hoping for big things in the future. Microsoft's chief exec Steve Ballmer said that its work with Nokia, HTC and Samsung offered them the chance to create a "really strong third participant in the smartphone market." He admitted that they weren't there quite yet and told the audience at a Windows 8 launch event in Israel that Microsoft's mobile OS was "still relatively small", but that he expects "the volumes on Windows Phone to really ramp quickly." The company will be lavishing more on marketing and advertising around Windows 8, Window Phone 8 and Surface than it has on anything previous -- which sounds good, as its new mobile OS might need the help.

If you like your tablets of the Samsung persuasion, AT&T has just promised an abundance of riches. The carrier has confirmed that both the Android-toting Galaxy Tab 2 10.1 and the Windows 8-based ATIV Smart PC will reach its stores and LTE network by November 9th at respective contract-free prices of $500 and $800. Those who spring for the ATIV-badged hardware can deck it out with a $49 Stand Dock and a $40 VGA adapter, both available in late November, if they're keen to transform their 11.6-inch slates into tiny desktops. And if you'd really, really like to go all-in with Samsung, there's a promo running through the holidays that knocks as much as $100 off the tablet price if you're willing to buy a Samsung phone (and the matching two-year contract, naturally) at the same time.

Apple may have just learned a lesson about all-or-nothing gambles. Judge Crabb has dismissed the company's lawsuit against Motorola over fair royalties for standards-based patents after the firm said it would only accept court-dictated payouts to Motorola of less than $1 per iPhone. To say that Crabb isn't eager to be used as leverage for a discount is an understatement -- she flipped from leaning towards a trial just days earlier to preventing Apple from suing over the same dispute unless it wins an appeal. The decision doesn't represent the first time the Cupertino team has had a lawsuit tossed this year, although it comes as Motorola has faced its own share of legal setbacks; the two parties are still very much in a stalemate. All we know for certain is that any royalty decision will have to come through either a (currently unlikely) settlement or through a separate trial.

Publisher Square Enix has dismissed the notion that free-to-play is the only business model for mobile.
The firm says it has had success with its premium-priced iOS titles, including episodic title Final Fantasy Dimensions, which costs in total ÂŁ19.99.
“It’s actually done a lot more revenue than a lot of free-to-play with in-app purchases or advertising models,” said Square Enix’s mobile general manager Antony Douglas.
“You’ve got to sell 12 times that in some cases to get to one game on that £14.99/£20 model.
“Customer behaviour is changing all the time so it’s one of many business models that we have and we have all the others under scrutiny as well.
“What I will say about the business model is that it’s not fixed. Everyone says free-to-play is the future and that’s absolutely part of it, but that will change.
“If you’re playing a lengthy £20 RPG title, there will be an audience for that. Some people won’t go for it but those people could spend £30 on resource management games. We’re looking into it to see how people respond.
“We can’t show too much in the way of figures but it hasn’t had the negative sales response that some people would think.”

An altered version of Apple’s Samsung lawsuit acknowledgement has been published on the company’s website.
On October 18th Apple was ordered by the UK courts to publish an acknowledgement of the court’s ruling that Samsung was not guilty of the patent breaches Apple had accused it of.
A statement was published on October 26th but just days later the courts were back on Apple’s case again, demanding amendmentsto its statement that it described as “a plain breach” of its order.
Apple’s fresh statement is now live and reads:
On 9 July 2012 the High Court of Justice of England and Wales ruled that Samsung Electronic (UK) Limited's Galaxy Tablet Computers, namely the Galaxy Tab 10.1, Tab 8.9 and Tab 7.7 do not infringe Apple's Community registered design No. 0000181607–0001. A copy of the full judgment of the High Court is available [here]
That Judgment has effect throughout the European Union and was upheld by the Court of Appeal of England and Wales on 18 October 2012. A copy of the Court of Appeal's judgment is available [here]. There is no injunction in respect of the Community registered design in force anywhere in Europe.
However, PocketGamer reports that Reddit users have discovered a cheeky bit of code that has been added toApple's homepage. This effectively ensures that the link to the disclaimer is by default hidden beyond the fold at the bottom of the screen, regardless of a user’s screen resolution.
This way Apple complies with the court’s demands but still hides the text.

Samsung launched the Galaxy S III in May and must be grinning from ear to ear with the sales it's experiencing.
The 4.8-inch device has now crossed 30m sales in five months (157 days), rising from 20m in 100 days, and 10m in under two months.

Meeting this sales milestone in five months sets another record for Samsung, and we are extremely proud and yet motivated to continue to provide our customers with products that they love.
"On behalf of Samsung Mobile, I appreciate millions of customers around the world that have chosen the Samsung GALAXY S III."

A Microsoft branded smartphone could well be in the pipeline, after a report in the Wall Street Journal suggested that the company is currently testing a new handset design with component suppliers in Asia.
While Microsoft has thus far declined to comment on the rumours, a source cited in the report stated that the smartphone has a screen size of four inches, which is in the same range as top smartphones from Apple, Samsung, HTC and Motorola.
However, according to the report, officials at component suppliers did indicate that the Microsoft smartphone may not go into mass production.
Should Microsoft introduce a smartphone for commercial production, the company would move closer to the Apple business model, designing both the software and hardware for each of its marquee devices.

October was a busy month for the tablet space, with Apple revealing an iPad 4 and iPad mini, while Samsung and Google announced the Nexus 10.
Since the Apple unveilings, phone recycling site SellMyMobile.comhas reported a 500 per cent and 312.5 per cent spike of iPad and BlackBerry PlayBook trade-ins, respectively.
The iOS tablet now accounts for 76.1 per cent of tablet swaps, followed by the Playbook at 9.9 per cent and Samsung Galaxy Tab at 7.3 per cent.
The iPad 3 64GB (wi-fi and 4G) model is the most valuable device at ÂŁ380, which ism't surprising considering it was only released seven months ago. Indeed, the fact more iPads have arrived in such a short space of time has peeved a lot of existing owners.
Other devices that hold their value well include:
* iPad 2 64GB (WiFi + 3G) at ÂŁ259
* Samsung Galaxy Note at ÂŁ190
* Samsung Galaxy Tab at ÂŁ160
* Motorola Xoom 2 at ÂŁ139
Meanwhile, the iPad Mini also had an impact on the phone space, with the prices of the iPhone 5 and iPhone 4S dropping by 30 and 15 per cent, respectively.
Colin White, MD of SellMyMobile.com, said: "Over the past few years, we’ve seen a steady increase in the number of people looking to recycle their old mobiles – particularly when a new handset is released. But whereas before people would hang on to their tablets longer, high profile launches like the Apple iPad, Google Nexus 10 and Microsoft Surface mean that we’re now seeing this trend move to the tablet industry.
"We’ve become a nation of gadget lovers, and technology hungry Brits can’t even wait for Christmas to get their hands on the new devices – meaning they are trading up and recycling old tablets in favour of newer, flashier models."

November 5th, 2012, 19:07 Posted By: wraggster
According to a survey by API company Apigee, 96 per cent of American app users have been rendered sufficiently enraged by their apps as to take to the web and post a strong-worded negative review.
Among the major issues forcing people to submit their bad reviews were freezing (76 per cent of survey participants), crashes (71 per cent), slow responsiveness (59 per cent), heavy battery usage (55 per cent) and too many ads (53 per cent).
Meanwhile, 98 per cent of respondents insisted that performance matters, with 63 per cent stating that this was most critical in banking and mapping apps.
When an app fails to meet expectations, 99 per cent said that they would take some form of action. 44 per cent said they would delete an app immediately, while 38 per cent said they would delete an app if it froze for longer than 30 seconds, with 18 per cent saying they would do the same if it froze for five seconds. However, 27 per cent claimed they would keep an app longer if they had paid for it.
Word of mouth also appears to be a key method for disgruntled app consumers to voice their concerns, with 32 per cent of users saying they would tell their friends about the underperforming application, while 21 per cent would complain about the app on Facebook or Twitter.
Additionally, the most popular response (89 per cent) to an app issue is for app companies to fix the problem.
Other favoured responses included easy refunds (65 per cent), the provision of a customer service number (49 per cent) or a personal response (46 per cent), while 21 per cent believed that a public apology would be an appropriate response.

We've delved into just what we think of Windows Phone 8's interface, but not what led Microsoft to the final layout. The company isn't content to let us wonder -- a pair of new company blog posts explain some (though not all) of what was involved in that birthing process. Ignore the marketing spin and you'll learn that the wider, more densely packed home screen was chosen as much for balance as to stuff in more home tiles, and that it caused a momentary crisis for the app list as a result. The Redmond team goes on to justify choices behind the lock screen, such as why notifications are as customizable as they are, why the music controls fade and why there's a failsafe for PIN attempts. Don't expect to come out of the explanations suddenly craving a Lumia 920; just expect to make more sense of the OS inside.

According to a (paywalled) report in the Wall Street Journal, Microsoft is experimenting with its own smartphone design. "Officials at some of Microsoft's parts suppliers, who declined to be named, said the Redmond, Wash.-based company is testing a smartphone design but isn't sure if a product will go into mass production." The article continues:"If Microsoft pushes ahead with its mobile phone, it would underscore how far Microsoft has moved away from its long-standing practice of making software and leaving decisions about design, features and marketing of the computing hardware to partners such as Hewlett-Packard or Samsung Electronics. ... As it does so, Microsoft pulls from a modified playbook of Apple—whose hardware-plus-software approach Microsoft officials long have scorned. ... Smartphones running Microsoft's two-year-old Windows Phone operating software for cellphones haven't sold well, and Microsoft may want to leave itself an option to test whether its own phone would spur sales."

By using the same technology found in older modems, Thomas Tumino, vice president of the Hall of Science Amateur Radio Club, has invented an iPhone interface for ham radios. He told The Epoch Times, 'Today there are iPhone apps where you can use the systems in the phone — and its sound card, which is being used as a modem ... And then you connect that into your radio with an interface like this, that just isolates the telephone from the radio, and then you can do all sorts of things

Apple has launched the latest addition to its range of tablet devices, the iPad Mini.
The new device hit UK shelves this morning as early adopters of the device queued early ahead of the Mini's 8am release.
It's expected to prove popular amongst consumers who have long been fans of the iPad but have held out until now for a smaller device that fits their needs, much like the Google Nexus or Kindle Fire.
The iPad Mini measures in at just 7.9-inches and offers specifications similar to that of Apple's previous iPad 2 with a screen resolution of 1024x768, whilst being powered by a A5 processor and coming complete with LTE technology, which will allow the new device to be used on EE's recently launched 4G network.
However, the number of those in attendance at the new device's launch pales in comparison to the crowds that camped out for a week ahead of the firm's iPhone 5.
Apple has come under fire for its new iPad device, with many highlighting its costly price tag when compared to similar devices on the market, along with the firm's decision to release the new product so soon after it launched its previous, third-generation iPad and new iPhone.
It's likely that these factors, matched with the prospect of queuing on a particularly cold November morning put a number of potential customers off, who may prefer to get their hands on the device in less-demanding fashion. Pre-ordering online, maybe?
