However, Apple has managed to squeeze these high performance components in to a housing that’s just 5mm thick. In addition the redesigned widescreen display apparently offer 75 per cent less glare than previous models.
It also utilises a hybrid model of storage, which Apple ostentatiously calls the Fusion Drive, which is a 128GB solid state drive running alongside a one or three TB spindle drive.
The 21.5-inch version of the new iMac is priced at £1,099 and the 27-inch model is priced at £1,499.

After a successful showcase at Gadget Show Birmingham earlier this year, BubblePix is back to offer up its new Samsung-friendly 360 degree BubbleScope camera.
Back in August we spoke to inventor Tom Lawson about his unique smartphone accessory, and at the time it was just getting ready to launch on the iPhone 4/4S. Skip to a few months later and the BubbleScope range is going strong and expanding.
Now available for the iPhone 5, the BubbleScope claims to be better than any smartphone camera.
The new iPhone 5 case is available with a BubbleScope pack, or separately, so that existing 4/4S users can upgrade their case without needing a new camera.
A Samsung Galaxy S3 case, as well as a BlackBerry BB10 solution, is also on the way, but not content with only appealing to the smartphone market, BubblePix is also planning to release a case for the iPad 3 in 2013.
"The higher capability of the cameras in these handsets, paired with our high quality glass optics, simply mean better pictures for our customers," said Lawson.
"We also now have a retail price below £50 and we hope that as a result, even more people will be able to discover the magic of personal 360 imaging."

It’s not often that you get to see the Activision logo on your iDevice screen.
Last night Activision Mobile Publishing released free-to-play title The Bowling Dead onto the Apple App Store.
As the name might suggest, the release combines two fan favourites – zombies and bowling. Players have to manage their resources, with bowling balls in limited supply and power-ups very much advised for progression.
The campaign mode includes 40 levels and an additional survival mode sees players competing for online high scores.
And being free-to-play, there are lots of ways of forking out real-world cash for in-game help.

Smartphone owners in the UK seem more than a little reluctant to part with cash for their mobile apps, after a survey by MyVoucherCodes showed that 40 per cent of Brits never download paid-for apps.
The survey of 2,600 smartphone owners also revealed that 32 per cent occasionally pay for apps, while 27 per cent claim that they do so on a regular basis.
When those who never pay for apps were asked to explain why, 53 per cent said that they ‘didn’t think they were worth it’. 29 per cent, however, insisted that they ‘couldn’t afford’ to pay for apps.
Those who claimed that they would occasionally pay for apps said that they would be most likely to pay for social networking apps (71 per cent). The second most popular choice was new apps with 64 per cent, while 59 per cent stated that they would be most likely to spend on game apps. Sports/fitness apps came in at fourth with 57 per cent and food/recipe apps took fifth with 51 per cent.
Meanwhile, regular app buyers revealed that the average amount they would spend on apps each month was around £5.20.
Mark Pearson, chairman of MyVoucherCodes, said of the results: "It was quite interesting to see how many people don't actually pay for apps. They can seem quite expensive at the time, but when you consider that some are just 69p, it's not all that much in the grand scheme of things!"

A warning for brands not to miss their target audience by pushing to iOS.
Orange has released the Orange Exposure 2012/2013 study, which analyses mobile trends adopted by teens aged 11-18 in the UK, France and Spain. The respondents consider mobiles their primary device screen, with 83 per cent and 95 per cent of those in the UK and Spain owning a smartphone.
Reasons for favouring mobile included:
* 92 per cent of Brits say it's a "way to always have a media device at hand"
* 55 per cent of Brits say it's "mine and no one else’s" so “I can access what I want, when I want."
However, the report makes a key note for advertisers not to miss out on the opportunities presented by BlackBerry, even though 56 per cent of adult users want an iPhone 5. It shows that BB penetration among UK and Spain teens is two and three times higher than other mobile device, while iPhone's is low because of the high price tags.
Meanwhile, one in two Spanish respondents owns an Android device, with 38 per cent of Brits also owning one – a 14 per cent year-on-year increase.
Social media is also a big player with youngsters as Brit kids admitting to spending an average of ten hours a week using networks, while three-quarters of teens across the UK, France and Spain discussing watch they're watching on TV view social networks accessed from their mobile.
The figure supports the ever-growing trend of second-screen use, and PacketVideo's prediction that tablets will replace TV remotes in the future.
Stephanie Hospital, exec VP of Orange Digital Audience and Advertising Division, said: "The question that every advertiser and brand should be asking themselves is 'am I on top of this new consumer usage and am I using mobile marketing to its full potential?'
"The research lays bare the significant opportunities for advertisers to monetise and engage with their audience in a responsible manner – with teenagers so firmly adopting the mobile as their key device; and adults using multiple screens interchangeably as second nature - advertisers must sit up and harness its potential."

After its untimely demise, WebOS showed some resilience by coming back in open source form and popping up in various devices hither and yon. On the vanguard of that resurrection isPhoenix International Communications, a team of volunteers who've managed to port the orphaned OS to a Samsung Nexus S device, running as an app inside Android. So far, the reborn OS app is displaying decidedly zombie-like slowness, but it's still an early pre-alpha build. If all goes well, you might one day be able to seamlessly switch between WebOS and Android without rebooting, letting you run apps from both systems. So, if you've been carrying a torch for the fallen system, check the video after the break.

With all the hubbub surrounding Windows Phone 8, it's easy to forget that Microsoft has another new OS in the pipeline: a refresh known as Windows Phone 7.8. One group hasn't forgotten about the update, however, and that's all the current users of Windows Phone 7.5. Now, Microsoft is issuing a reminder that, yes, the update really is coming -- just not this year. The folks in Redmond assert that they're currently working with hardware manufacturers and carriers to deploy Windows Phone 7.8 to "as many devices as possible" in early 2013. So, it seems that Christmas will come a bit later for owners of older hardware, but at least Microsoft has a New Year's resolution worth sticking to.

The ITworld article reads: 'Nokia has asked a California court to enforce an arbitration award that wouldprevent Research In Motion from selling products with wireless LAN capabilities until the companies can agree on patent royalty rates. Nokia and RIM both declined to comment on Nokia's request, a copy of which was obtained by IDG News Service, but such a filing is typically made after two parties settle a dispute through arbitration but one party does not follow through on the agreement.'"Also from the article: "The patents in question are U.S. patents 5,479,476, which covers user-adjustable modes for phones; 5,845,219, which covers call alert during silent mode; 6,049,796, which covers real-time search on a personal digital assistant; 6,055,439, which covers a cellphone user interface; 6,253,075, which covers call rejection; and 6,427,078, which covers a small, handheld workstation.

Amazon EU has only just announced that Amazon.co.uk sold more Kindles on Black Friday (November 23rd) than any other day in history. However, Cyber Monday has broke records on a global scale as Amazon claims the shopping holiday has become the "biggest day ever for Kindle sales worldwide".
Numbers weren't revealed, but the retailer assures 2012 sales doubled the results of Cyber Monday 2011, while highlighting that its Kindle e-readers and Kindle Fires have been the top four best-selling items globally for almost three months.
Meanwhile, the Kindle Fire HD has been the most gifted and most wished for product on Amazon worldwide since launch.
Dave Limp, VP of Amazon Kindle, said: "We’re excited that customers made this Black Friday and Cyber Monday the best ever for Kindle worldwide—Cyber Monday was the biggest day ever for Kindle sales, and we’re looking forward to millions of customers opening a new Kindle this holiday season."

Android drops to second place as iOS takes 48.1 per cent of smartphone market share.
Apple has overtaken Android to reclaim top spot in the US smartphone market, as iPhone 5 sales begin to soar.
New smartphone sales data from Kantar Worldpanel ComTech show that iOS has a 48.1 per cent share of US smartphone sales, with Android taking 46.7 per cent of the market. This is in no small part due to the growing uptake of Apple’s iPhone five over the past 12 weeks.
Dominic Sunnebo, global consumer insight director at Kantar Worldpanel ComTech, commented: “The last time we saw iOS overtake Android in the US was when the iPhone 4S was released and Apple managed to retain its lead for three consecutive periods. This time we predict that Apple will beat its previous high of 49.3 per cent and achieve its highest ever share of the US smartphone market within the next two periods.”
Despite Apple’s lead in the US, it continues to chase Android in the European smartphone market, whose dominance is represented by 73.9 per cent of sales in Germany and 81.7 per cent in Spain. However, Apple now has share gains in four of Europe’s five major countries, most notably in Britain, where it holds a share of 32.7 per cent.
Sunnebo continued: “Germany remains a tough market for Apple with its share falling by 5.1 per centage points over the past year. The Samsung Galaxy S3 has taken almost a quarter of the country’s smartphone sales over the past 12 weeks to boost Android yet further. In Italy, strong sales of the Nokia Lumia 610, the fourth best selling handset over the past 12 weeks, and the Nokia Lumia 800, the seventh best selling, have helped drive Windows’ share up to 11.7 per cent – the highest across Europe.”
The majority of iPhone 5 sales in the US have come from existing Apple owners, with 62 per cent upgrading to the new device. However, Apple has also benefitted from consumers switching from Android devices (13 per cent), people switching from BlackBerry devices (six per cent) and a small number of first time smartphone owners.
“Apple has always managed to maintain loyalty levels far above the competition, and this has clearly played a part in driving sales of its new device,” Sunnebo added. “An impressive 92 per cent of existing Apple owners in the US said they will choose an iPhone the next time they upgrade. While loyalty is clearly key, it is also important to make sure that new customers are attracted to your brand. With roughly 60 per cent of US iPhone 5 sales coming from existing customers and 40 per cent from new consumers, Apple is achieving this at the moment – a clear sign of the strength of the brand in the US marketplace.”

November 28th, 2012, 23:20 Posted By: wraggster
Microsoft has reportedly signed a deal with iPhone manufacturer Foxconn to begin production of its own smartphone device.
First reported by rumour site Digitimes, the firm is extending the Surface brand into the smartphone market as a potential competitor for Apple's iPhone, which currently dominates the market.
It would signify Microsoft's further efforts to combat Apple and its dominance of the mobile device market, by producing a range of Surface branded products to compete with both the iPhone and iPad devices.
The report should be taken with a pinch of salt, however, as Digitimes has a mixed history on reporting such rumours.
Whilst predicting that consumers would be using Nokia tablets and iPhone 5 foldout keyboards by Christmas, the site did correctly predict the release of the iPad mini and upgraded screen size of the iPhone 5 ahead of its launch.
If true, the news would have massive implications for those firms partnered with Microsoft, particularly Nokia, who recently launched the Lumina range, which is based around the Windows Phone operating system.
It's hard to believe that Microsoft would overshadow the release of Nokia's Windows Phone with its own branded device so soon after its launch,
However, it wouldn't be the first time Microsoft did something similar, considering it launched the original Surface tablet as a direct competitor against its partnership with Acer and its own range of Windows 8 RT based tablets.

Although the iPad is still leader of the pack, its market share has dropped significantly since 2010, leaving everyone wondering how long until Android takes over.
Early predictions favoured 2015 or 2016 as the crossover point, but Sameer Singh from Finvista Advisors believes the narrowing gap between Apple and Android suggests 2013 could be the year that consumers finally get over the iPad.
“That trend will continue as the share collectively owned by Android tablets surpasses that of the iPad in the first half of next year,” said Singh.
Rumours of the iPad mini throughout the year caused many consumers to refrain from buying the New iPad in Q3, preferring to wait for Apple’s first ever 7-inch tablet. But rather than make up the numbers with the iPad mini, the tablet’s high starting price left some wondering why they should chose this device when a 7-inch Android tablet was so much cheaper.
This slowdown put a sizeable dent in Apple's commanding worldwide market tablet share, which slipped from 65.5 per cent in Q2 to 50.4 per cent in Q3 2012. Compare this to 2010, when iPad had 87 per cent market share (reports IDC), and Android dominating the tablet market in 2013 doesn’t sound too far fetched.
“With the introduction of a smaller, lower-cost iPad mini, Apple has acknowledged Android’s beachhead of 7-inch-class tablets, though at the same time, it has failed to deliver a knock-out punch through innovation, pricing, and availability during the most critical selling period of the year,” commented ABI Research senior practice director Jeff Orr.
“As the OS of choice for the majority of device OEMs, we expect the Android ecosystem to continue growing in numbers – new manufacturers, better device choices for reaching more markets, and more developers finding value from apps and content,” adds Orr.
IDC program manager Ryan Reith believes Windows 8 has also made an impact on the tablet market, but predicts its price could hold it back: "With the recent introduction of a number of Windows 8 and Windows RT tablets, consumers now have a third viable tablet platform from which to choose. However, price points are critical in tablets, and Microsoft and its partners will have a tough time winning a share of consumer wallet with price points starting at $500."
ABI reports that Android now powers more than 44 per cent of tablet shipments. This figure suggests that it won’t take long for Android to potentially overtake Apple, as more and more manufacturers and developers get on board.
