Richard Williamson, a member of Apple’s original iPhone team, has joined Facebook to manage its mobile-software group.
Williamson lead the development of Apple’s widely criticised Maps application and after a huge number of user complaints, was fired by Eddy Cue, Apple’s senior vice-president of internet software and services.
Apple Maps appeared to have a number of major bugs, including missing directions and incomplete 3D views. In December, the Australian police warned motorists off Apple’s own mapping system after some people were lead into dangerous terrain.
Williamson has now taken the role of director of engineering at the Facebook’s mobile-software department as the social network ramps up its focus on reaching customers on mobile devices.

Taiwanese fair-trade officials are to investigate claims that Samsung paid to have negative reviews of rival HTC posted online.
It is believed the South-Korean firm hired students to post poor reviews of HTC's phone products online.
Fair trade officials have launched the probe following multiple complaints highlighting the issue. If found guilty of 'false advertising', Samsung could face fines of up to 25m Taiwanese dollars (£547,000).
The claims were fuelled by PC Advisor, which published documents, which appear to show Samsung hiring students to praise the firm and its products, whilst criticising HTC.
Whilst initially unaware of the investigation, Samsung Taiwan has since posted a statement in response to the claims on its Facebook page, stating it had "ceased all marketing activities that involve the posting of anonymous comments".
"The recent incident was unfortunate, and occurred due to insufficient understanding of these fundamental principles," the statement continued.

We saw AT&T open up a registration page for the Galaxy S 4 almost as soon as Samsung's presentation was over, but now that link is exposing a bit more information. Several tipsters let us know that for customers in certain areas, the website is now showing the 16GB GS 4 available for pre-order in White Frost or Black Mist. Some of the details are visible to all, including that the phone is promised to ship April 30th and has an off-contract price tag of $639 ($199 w/ two-year agreement). Those who can get further in the ordering process report it's expected to arrive at their homes on or before May 3rd, with two-day shipping. Hit the link below if you're moved to get your pre-order for Samsung's latest standard-bearer in as soon as possible.

Rumors of an upcoming iPad sporting a similar design as the iPad mini go as far back as late January this year, when our reliable friends at 9to5Mac shared some clear photos of a leaked chassis (check them out at the "More Coverage" link below). This was followed by an alleged photo of the front panel sent around earlier this month. But as before, cases for this unreleased "iPad 5" have also been making the rounds in China, and we've managed to get our hands on one at the Hong Kong Electronics Fair earlier today. It's the same old story according to a staff at the booth: the case is based on a leaked mold. Oops!
Compared to a similar case made for the two latest generations of the bigger iPad, this case again suggests a slimmer and narrower iPad is in the works, which would mean that this mysterious tablet is likely to have the same screen size but thinner left and right-side bezels -- just like the iPad mini. Similarly, the straighter edges support 9to5Mac's earlier leak of the iPad mini-like body. Let's just hope that Apple will still have a few surprises up its sleeves then, eh?

There's a Google exec speaking at a tech conference, and that means one thing: more Android statistics. AtDive Into Mobile today, Executive Chairman Eric Schmidt confirmed that the company is now seeing 1.5 million Android activations per day, which is up from 1.3 million per day last fall and 1.4 million as of last month (seemingly an uptick after a short period of slower growth). Schmidt also says that the company remains on track for one billion total devices by the end of the year, which would be a sizeable increase from the 750 million that CEO Larry Page confirmed in his most recent statement last month. Schmidt further notes that the key to that future growth -- or reaching the "next five billion people looking to get connected," as he puts it -- will be the $100 price point, something he suggests they'll quickly get to.

Sony has been friendlier than many of its mobile rivals toward outside code, backingAOSP efforts even when it has had to shoulder most of the responsibilities. It's only fitting, then, that five of its more recent smartphones just received their first nightlyCyanogenMod 10.1 builds, all in one fell swoop. Support for the Xperia Z and ZL is no doubt the highlight, although experimenters who stand just short of the cutting edge can get CyanogenMod releases for the Xperia T, TX and V. As always, nightlies of custom OS code redefine risky -- but those who can't wait for Sony to push a safe Android 4.2 release can now do more than just twiddle their thumbs.

First, the bad news. Facebook Home isn't coming to iOS anytime soon due to the underlying technologies that restrict the way apps interact with the iPhone's operating system. Now, the good news: Facebook is pushing an update to its iOS app right nowthat'll add support for chat heads. Mike Schroepfer, CTO and vice president of engineering at Facebook, just announced the news here at D: Dive Into Mobile, and if all goes well, you should see the update hit your own device later in the day.
According to Schroepfer: "The goal from the beginning was to get this experience into everyone's hands. As part of that, we're shortly going to announce an update to our iOS app that'll add chat heads. Multiple messages, multiple threads, same design, etc. You have to be within the app -- that's a limitation of iOS. You can't draw across other apps when you aren't in the app."

Most of us who've followed the history of Android tend to presume that it was a single-minded effort to open up the smartphone world. Not so, ex-Android chief Andy Rubin says. The OS co-creator just mentioned at a Tokyo summit that Android was first pitched in April 2004 as the foundation for connected cameras that would store photos online. When it became clear that the digital photography market was relatively small, the fledgling team shifted its attention to cellphones within the space of five months. We know how history played out after that fateful decision, and arguably smartphones are richer for it -- that said, it's amusing to discover that smart shooters like the Galaxy Camera just represent Android's original strategy come full circle.

When Samsung said it was having a little soiree to celebrate the launch of the Galaxy S 4, we took the company on its word. At the end, when the execs present warned us of something new, we thought a Mini might be in the cards, but in fact it was the exact opposite. It turns out that Samsung brought another friend along to the party, the recently announced Galaxy Mega. The largest of the two, to be precise. So, while everyone wanted to play with the latest flagship, we thought we'd take some time to get the know the 6.3-inch Galaxy Mega a little better. Head past the break for our impressions.

Facebook promised that other countries would be getting Home for Android sometime after the US rollout, but it didn't have much more to offer in the way of specifics at its launch event earlier this month. It turns out the wait wasn't too long for some countries, though, as the Home app is now available for download in at least Canada and the UK. Of course, you'll still need one of the phones already approved for use to actually run it -- namely, the Samsung Galaxy Note II, Galaxy S III, HTC One X+, One X or One. As for the one phone that Home actually ships pre-installed on, the HTC First, it remains a US-exclusive on AT&T; EE and Orange have confirmed that they'll be carrying it across the pond, but there's still no word on Canadian availability.

Check out this 20″ iMac. Notice anything peculiar? Look closely at the branding above the Apple logo. The only thing that tips you off that this iMac is a hacked together unit is that Acer logo on the replacement screen.
As we’ve so often been caught doing, [Flippy] was browsing eBay for deals. It’s a dangerous activity because you end up falling into purchases like an Aluminum iMac for $35. That led to the purchase of a very slim LED LCD monitor to use as the display. It fits perfectly behind the iMac’s glass bezel, which has a tiny chip in the upper right corner that doesn’t bother [Flippy]. It’s thin enough that this actually left room for him to add in the guts of a MacBook Pro which he had sitting in his unused parts pile. With all of the main components accounted for the rest is really just logistics like routing all of the cable connectors and adding openings for USB ports. What he ended up with is a high-end computer for a low-end price.

The tech housed in the upcoming Android console Ouya lags significantly behind many other modern Andorid devices.
VentureBeat reports that results using benchmarking software Futuremark suggested that Ouya ranks 73rd in the Android power league table. That’s ahead of the likes of Google’s Nexus 7 tablet but behind devices such as LG’s Nexus 4 smartphone, which more than doubled Ouya’s Futuremark score.
Rivals such as the HTC One and Samsung Galaxy S IV rate even higher.
The Nexus 7 or Galaxy S III are regarded by many as ‘the industry standard’. They score just over 5,000 on Futuremark. Ouya, by contrast, scored just over 4,000.
GameInformer magazine concluded from the numbers that “Ouya’s tech is a generation old”.
It should be noted, of course, that Ouya will retail for $99 – a fraction of the price of the aforementioned smartphones. And of course it’s hardly as if graphical clout will be the driving force behind Ouya’s market pitch.

The public survey element of the OFT's investigation into in-app purchases has been revealed.
The OFT last week launched an investigation into whether children are being unfairly pressured or encouraged to buy additional content in ‘free’ web and app-based games. The move follows repeated incidents where children have paid for virtual items or access with real money.
The questionnaire is specifically about children and their use of these apps, and tends to be directed at parents.
The full questionnaire is listed below:
1. How old is your child? (Please complete one of these forms for each of your children, if you have more than one.)
2. Which web and/or app games has your child played in the last two months?
3. Have any of those games invited your child to make a purchase?
4. When you first downloaded those games – or allowed your child to create an account to play them – did you expect that in - game purchases might be a feature of the game? Did you expect the game would invite your child to make a purchase?
5. Have you, your child or another adult made an in - game purchase for your child? Or made any other form of purchase to allow your child to progress further in the game or access additional content?
6. If you answered yes to question 5, how many of those purchases have been made in the last two months?
7. Thinking about the most recent of the purchases mentioned in question 5, what was the value of that purchase and how was it made (for example, by credit/debit card, gift card, iTunes account or similar, etc)?
8. Is there any other information you would like us to consider as part of our investigation?

The Tap Paradise Cove studio talks working with the new iOS porting tech
Tap Paradise Cove developer Pocket Gems has moved to praise the power of the new Marmalade Juice porting solution, which lets developers take iOS games to other platforms with minimal effort.
Pocket Gems worked with software company Marmalade as the latter put the final touches on Marmalade Juice, which lets iOS developers looking to target other platforms do so by allowing them to recompile Objective-C and native OS APIs, previously only usable on iOS and Mac, all within the Marmalade SDK. Thereafter users can take their applications and deploy them directly to Android, as well as numerous other Marmalade-supported platforms such as Mac desktop, BlackBerry and selected smart TVs, all while using their original iOS code.
“Pocket Gems worked closely with the Marmalade team to build, test, and release the first version of Tap Paradise Cove on Google Play and the Amazon Appstore,” stated Arjun Dayal, Pocket Gems Android product lead, talking to Develop for a feature published today that focuses on what Marmalade Juice brings to the table.
“The ability to manage a single code base and deploy to multiple platforms is very powerful,” Dayal later added. “It saves engineering time, debugging time, and allows developers to focus more on the overall player experience instead of bug and feature differences between the platforms. Cross-platform development is an important step for the industry.”
Marmalade hopes its tech can contribute to freeing developers from the often prohibitive cost and effort of porting a game from iOS, which before Marmalade Juice often meant wholly rewriting a given game.

Social network admits to mobile software discussions with the companies.
The Facebook phone was finally unveiled earlier this month, and arrived as downloadable social interface,Facebook Home. Available for selected Android devices – or a standard for the HTC first – Home enhances content interactions and messaging.
And while CEO Mark Zuckerberg praised the openness of Google's OS at the recent launch, Bloomberg reportsFacebook Home may not remain an Android exclusive for long.
The social network's director of product Adam Mosseri admitted that there are continuing talks with Apple and Microsoft about expanding Home to their respective iOS and Windows Phone operating systems.
Mosseri, said: "We’ve shown them what we’ve built and we’re just in an ongoing conversation," adding that Home for iPhone would be modified to suit Apple's needs, potentially looking hugely different to the Android design.
He continued: "It may or may not be Home. "We could also just bring some of the design values to the iOS app. That might be how it ends up. Or we could build just the lock screen. Maybe then it’s not called Home, it’s called something else."

According to a forecast by IHS iSuppli, netbooks are in their final days and will be extinct by 2015, thanks to the popularity of tablets.
For 2013, netbook shipments are expected to fall to 3.97 million units, down 72 per cent from 2012.
“The market for the small, inexpensive notebooks had steadily climbed for three years from the time the devices were first introduced in 2007, peaking in 2010 when shipments hit a high of 32.14 million units. Since then, however, the netbook space has imploded and gone into decline – fast,” noted IHS iSuppli.
The researcher seems to point the finger at Apple’s iPad when trying to explain the downfall of the netbook.
As netbooks hit their peak of 32.14 million in 2010, along came the iPad and it's at that point sales started to dip. Just one year later and there were over ten million less netbooks being sold.
"Initially intended for light productivity tasks such as web browsing and email, netbooks eventually became more powerful, taking advantage of a mature PC technology that allowed cost-effective implementation of various functionalities. And though never equaling the performance of full-fledged notebooks and lacking full notebook features like an optical drive, netbooks at one point began taking market share away from their more powerful cousins.
“However, netbooks began their descent to oblivion with the introduction in 2010 of Apple's iPad."

App discovery platform pulled by Apple gets 400,000 emails of support
The French company behind AppGratis, a discovery platform that was pulled by Apple from its App Store, has launched a petition to contest the removal and convince the distributor to change its mind.
Apple reported removed the title on April 6th for violating two of its App Store guidelines. The app direct user to free and paid-for apps, help developers reach users they may not have otherwise.
Now its makers have called on the apps’ user base to save it.
Speaking to PocketGamer.biz, CEO Simon Dawlat said the decision to involve the AppGratis community was made because the platform’s foundations are in its user base.
“We reached out to our users and asked for their public support because it's important everybody understands AppGratis is first and foremost a community, a consumer service, an iOS app loved and used by millions in the world,” said Dawlat.

lekiosk, the most successfully monetised iPad app in France – already on one in four iPads, no less - has now launched on Android, bringing the digital newsstand out of beta and into the Google Play store.
The lekiosk app allows users to browse, sample and purchase titles from a rotating, 3D rendered British-style newsstand.
Publishers, including the likes of the BBC, Condè Nast, and Dennis, have already signed up to lekiosk’s offering, meaning that around 100 titles are available to consumers at the time of launch.
lekiosk’s huge success in France is grounded in its use of tablet technology, as well as its innovative model, which allows users to subscribe to a monthly bundle of ten magazines for €10.
The announcement of lekiosk’s arrival on Android follows the firm’s partnership with ASUS, and a successful Series B funding round, which raised $7.1 million from CM-CIC and FSN PME CDC Enterprises in November 2012.
The partnership with ASUS’ line of tablets includes the Nexus 7, the Transformer Pad Infinity TF700, the Transformer Pad TF300 and the MeMO Pad.
lekiosk is now available on both Google Play and the Apple App Store.
