Despite enduring a notably torrid time of late, HTC has followed in the footsteps of BlackBerry by publicly dissing one of its far more successful rivals.
The manufacturer’s chief marketing officer Benjamin Ho accused Samsung of serving up ‘more of the same’ with its new Galaxy S 4 device in an email to The Wall Street Journal. It said: “With a continuation of a plastic body, and a larger screen being the most obvious physical change, Samsung’s new Galaxy pales in comparison to the all-aluminum unibody HTC One. This is more of the same. HTC remains the best option for those people looking for the best technology wrapped in premium design.”
In what appears to be a somewhat misguided attempt at reversing its own poor fortunes, it was also reported by Mobile Magazine that HTC set up shop outside the venue of the Galaxy S 4 launch – New York’s Radio City Music Hall - to give demonstrations of its new HTC One smartphone along with $100 coupons for the device.
Elsewhere, it was reported yesterday that BlackBerry CEO Thorsten Heins has also been on the offensive, telling the Australian Financial Review that Apple’s time as a dominant force is over.
He said: "Apple did a fantastic job in bringing touch devices to market ... They did a fantastic job with the user interface, they are a design icon. There is a reason why they were so successful, and we actually have to admit this and respect that."

Lee Young Hee, executive vice president of Samsung’s mobile business, has confirmed that a ‘smart watch’ has been in development for some time.
Lee revealed the news to Bloomberg in a recent interview, saying: “We’ve been preparing the watch product for so long. We are working very hard to get ready for it. We are preparing products for the future, and the watch is definitely one of them.”
Samsung mobile’s VP was keeping tightlipped about any specific features, prices or release dates, but there's been some rumours and mockups floating around the internet suggesting that Samsung’s ‘smart watch’ would be named the Galaxy Altius.
Last month PCR reported that a new patent filed by Apple shows off a device strongly mirroring the firm’s highly rumoured iWatch. With Apple and Samsung battling it out in the smartphone arena, it would be no surprise to see these two tech watches come to market around the same time.

The days of the new Sony Mobile are now long past. Two years in, and the company appears to have hit a stride with its smartphone portfolio, churning out new Xperias on a consistent basis. And today is no different with the unveiling of the Xperia L, a mid- to low-end effort that places a heavy emphasis on the camera experience. Carrying on the Arc's legacy, this 4.3-inch handset packs an FWVGA display, dual-core 1GHz Qualcomm Snapdragon S4, 1,700mAh battery, 8GB of internal storage (expandable via microSD), NFC and an 8-megapixel rear shooter with Exmor RS sensor into a conspicuously curved body rounded off with that signature Xperia power key.
Though it lacks the greater resolution and screen size of its 720p sibling the SP, this more budget-friendly device does enjoy an exclusive perk: HDR stills and video. A feature Sony's included to make the L an attractive point-and-shoot option for budget-minded consumers concerned with style points and not LTE or raw performance. Unsurprisingly, it comes pre-loaded with a trio of Sony's own media apps -- Walkman, Movies and Album -- a precedent it set at IFA last year.

Starting next month, Sprint loyalists will likely be able to get their paws around theGalaxy S 4. Or, if the budget has been a bit tight, a brand new Galaxy S III. The image above has been posted by the typically-reliable evleaks, showing off a heretofore unannounced purple edition of one of Samsung's cash cows. We aren't given too many details beyond a proposed April ship date, but one can only expect it to be offered for a song given the imminent arrival of its successor. To date, the GS III has been issued in red, white, grey, brown and black -- clearly, the only thing missing is a version that Willy Wonka himself would endorse.

Electronic Arts will have 16 titles available on the Google Play store when the Samsung Galaxy S4 launches this April. Titles include the recently announced Tetris Blitz and existing Android game titles, including Real Racing 3, The Sims, Simpsons: Tapped Out, Plants vs. Zombies, Need for Speed: Most Wanted, Monopoly, and Bejeweled Blitz.
"We're delighted to be partnered with Samsung to bring some of our fans' favorite mobile gaming titles to the Samsung Galaxy S4 in time for launch," said EA vice president of new platforms Glenn Roland. "The device's higher resolution, larger screen and increased processing power will give our games an opportunity to look even more beautiful for Samsung consumers."
Samsung also has an official controller planned for the Galaxy S4. The peripheral points to a Samsung more serious about mobile gaming, which could lead to more support for the platform in the future.
The Samsung Galaxy S4 sports a 5-inch, 1080p screen, 2GB of RAM, and 16 to 64 GB of storage, all powered by Samsung Exynos 5 or Qualcomm's Snapdragon 600 depending on your region. Pre-orders have begun at certain carriers, with a planned launch on April 26.

Free-to-play model pulls in the punters despite 'vocal minority'
EA has been vindicated by its free-to-play strategy for Real Racing 3, in the wake of positive sales of its in-app purchases.
When Real Racing 3 was released, it was attacked by consumers for having excessive microtransactions.
Electronic Arts vice president of mobile and social Nick Earl told CNet that despite the fact that a “vocal minority lashed out at freemium”, the game is doing relatively well.
Although he didn’t detail the profitability of the game or the exact number of downloads, Earl added that he felt “vindicated” by the finances.
EA has also released an infographic (see below) showing what Real Racing has managed to achieve so far. The game was the number one free app on the App Store in 90 countries, and downloads for its first week exceeded those of the previous two titles combined.

Xperia SP and Xperia L to be made available by the end of June.
Sony Mobile has today (March 18th) announced that it is adding two new, more affordable smartphones to its Xperia range – the Xperia SP and Xperia L.
The 4G LTE-enabled Xperia SP features a 4.6-inch HD Reality Display and comes with an eight-megapixel camera, a 1.7GHz dual-core processor and runs on Android’s Jelly Bean operating system.
Meanwhile, the Xperia L also runs on Android Jelly Bean but with a 1GHz dual-core processor. Its screen measures up at 4.3-inches, while its camera technology provides HDR for both photos and videos.
"Xperia SP and Xperia L are ideally suited for those seeking stylish class-leading smartphones that don’t compromise on features", said Calum MacDougall, director of Xperia Marketing at Sony Mobile Communications. "Both of our new models benefit from Sony’s proven innovation and engineering expertise – whether you want to enjoy premium HD quality entertainment over 4G LTE on our mid-range Xperia SP or capture every moment in perfect detail with our more affordable Xperia L."

Ooooooo, are you going to take that, Cook? FIGHT! FIGHT!
BlackBerry 10 is about to debut in Australia, and BlackBerry CEO Thorsten Heins – a man seemingly exhilarated from the Z10 release – has spoke to theAustralian Financial Review to explain that Apple's time as a dominant force is over.
Of course, his comments are ridiculously premature, given that BlackBerry has been suffering from declining sales, signal failures and overall bad juju for more than a year, while BB10 was only revealed in January.
He said: "Apple did a fantastic job in bringing touch devices to market ... They did a fantastic job with the user interface, they are a design icon. There is a reason why they were so successful, and we actually have to admit this and respect that."
Now get ready for him to deliver a kick to ribs.
He continued, saying: "History repeats itself again I guess ... the rate of innovation is so high in our industry that if you don’t innovate at that speed you can be replaced pretty quickly. The user interface on the iPhone, with all due respect for what this invention was all about is now five years old. The point is that you can never stand still."
Let's face it, this is a pot, kettle, and black scenario, but Heins clearly has high hopes for his firm's new OS, and adds a further blow by claiming BB beats the iPhone with its multi-tasking ability. There's some truth to what he says, with the iPhone 5 failing to set the smartphone world alight in terms of creativity, though it's still managed to achieve impressive sales.

A Microsoft support document reveals that Windows Phone 8 support will end in July 2014, meaning it is already past its ‘lifecycle start date’.
So is this a good sign or a bad sign for Windows Phone 8? Well, some may be having second thoughts on buying a Windows 8 smartphone knowing that they will have to undergo an OS upgrade or face using a handset that’s not supported half way through their contract.
This could be taken as a sign that the firm is backing away from mobile phones to focus on its Surface tablet, although this could actually be a sign of ongoing support for the mobile OS.
With support ending in just 16 months, Microsoft could be ready to unveil a newer version pretty soon. Increasing its OS releases to a near-annual schedule would put it at a similar pace to the likes of Apple, and a little ahead of major Android releases. If this is the case, Microsoft could be sending out a message to its competitors that it’s ready to start running a little faster in the OS race.

If you’re a follower of Apple hardware the upcoming Google Glass release probably doesn’t interest you much. But the concept is universally cool. If you want to have your own one-eyed voice-activated computer running iOS, then this is the hack for you. [John] calls it the Beady-i, and posted a step-by-step article on how he put it together.
The headpiece is shown on the left. It’s a combination of a pair of glasses with projection screens built-in, and a gaming headset. [John] cut off one of the lenses, and removed the remaining arm of the glasses. That arm was replaced with the frame of a gaming headset, which now wraps around the back of his neck to make sure the lopsided display isn’t going to fall off.
By combining the electronics from both the glasses and the headset, and terminating the connections with a docking plug he’s got what he was after. The lens displays what is shown on the screen, and the gaming headset lets him hear the device’s sound in one ear and register input using the microphone.

Nothing much has happened on the ax86 front during the past couple of weeks, as I have been focusing on getting rpix86 released. I have now submitted rpix86 to the Raspberry Pi Store Community Approval Process, so I should be able to get back to working on ax86, or at least on features that are needed in both. Currently the Sound Blaster digital audio features are implemented only in rpix86, so I need to add those to ax86 next. After that I will need to add a configuration page to ax86, as it can not use a similar command line parameter system as I made for rpix86.

First version of Sony PSP emulator for Android/Windows has been updated. Changes:
- PPSSPP has once again improved by leaps and bounds, thanks to plenty of hard work from everyone involved! Compatibility has gone up dramatically, speed has increased drastically (especially on mobile) and everything is just better. There's even horizontal tilt control! Some newly playable games are God of War (very slow though, but this will probably be fixed in the near future), Virtua Tennis, Megaman: Maverick Hunter X, Saint Seiya and games like Ace Combat X go in game. Enjoy!
