T-Mobile already let its new "UnCarrier" plans loose on its website without much fanfare this past weekend, but it's now finally talking a bit more about them at its biglaunch event in NYC. Dubbed Simple Choice, the new plans all of course do away with the traditional two-year contracts, and they all start with both unlimited talk and text. The differences come with the data options: the basic $50 a month plan will get you 500MB of high-speed data with rates throttled down to 2G speeds after you hit that limit. Heavier data users can opt for 2GB of unthrottled data for an extra $10 per month, while fully unlimited 4G data will set you back an extra $20 a month (or $70 total). A second line will run another $30 on top of that, with each additional line costing $10 apiece. Not surprisingly, the carrier is also making a big marketing push to promote its new approach. You see its first commercial after the break, and find a full breakdown of the plans at the source link below.
Update: As Android Central notes, there's also some changes to the way T-Mobile is handling plans for tablets, hotspots and other devices. Basically, if you have a standalone device on its own account, your options start at $20 a month for 500MB of unthrottled data and go up to $80 for 12.5GB. If you're adding that device to your existing account, though, it simply counts as an extra line, costing the same $10 for 500MB or an extra $20 for unlimited data.

Here at T-Mobile's "UnCarrier" press conference, we've heard loads of pricing andavailability details for the company's new LTE-enabled handsets. Well, here's one more tidbit: the Galaxy S4 is expected to hit T-Mo on May 1st. If that sounds like soft, tentative language on our part, it's because the carrier said the phone will arrive "about May 1st," so it's possible it could arrive, you know, on May 3rd instead. That said, it's coming, and soon. As for pricing, nothing's been confirmed, but we already know T-Mobile's other LTE phones (the iPhone 5, HTC One, etc.) will go for $100 plus monthly payments of $20 for two years, so we wouldn't be surprised if the same were true here.

A big part of T-Mobile's UnCarrier plan revolves around the iPhone 5, and it turns out that T-Mo's offering the Apple flagship at a previously unheard-of price: $579. As CEO John Legere announced today, his company will be offering its AWS-equipped version of the iPhone 5 for $99, plus 24 monthly payments of $20. That's contract-free, but the device is locked until it's fully paid for, and the cheapest monthly plan to go with it is$50 for 500MB of data and unlimited voice and texting a month. By contrast, the same 16GB phone unlocked direct from Apple costs $649, while AT&T offers a locked model for $199 -- if you sign a 24-month contract -- and the cheapest possible plan to go with it provides a mere 300MB of data, 450 minutes and no texting at a cost of $60 a month. So, T-Mo seems to be winning the iPhone price war, and doing so handily.

For jetsetters hoping to utilize T-Mobile's iPhone for all of their international jaunts, we've a bit of bad news for you: WiFi Calling isn't going to hit the carrier's iPhoneinitially. Here at today's T-Mobile UnCarrier event in New York City, the company's chief marketing officer Michael Sievert told me that "it's not coming" at launch, but when pressed, he confessed that T-Mob "loves its WiFi Calling feature, and I'll have to leave it at that." I then asked if it's on the roadmap, and if the company would like to have it included in an ideal world, which garnered a smile that I can safely assume means something positive for the future.
Of course, WiFi Calling -- which enables travelers to make and receive calls from their US phone number while latched onto a WiFi hotspot anywhere in the known universe -- works today on Android, but iOS fanatics aren't being given a clear date as to when they'll be brought up to speed. That said, at least T-Mob will sell you an iPhone unlocked, assuming you pay the full MSRP up front. Sievert affirmed to me that if a customer rolls into a T-Mobile store and pays the full price for iPhone, the reps onsite will be empowered to unlock it "on the spot." Oh, and as for that MSRP? It'll be the one(s) set by Apple, so you won't be facing any carrier-induced premiums either.
In fact, you could actually come out a bit cheaper if you're willing to wait a month. Sievert explained to me that if you picked up a baseline iPhone 5 for $99 with a new T-Mobile agreement, and then paid the first $20 towards its total cost after your first month of service, you could then pay the thing off in full at the amortized rate... meaning that a $649 phone would cost you just $579. And it'd be unlocked for use on any carrier in the world after just a month with T-Mob. Not bad!

March 27th, 2013, 11:42 Posted By: wraggster
Starting April 12th, Apple retail shops as well as Apple's online store will begin selling the new and gently tweaked A1428 model of the iPhone 5. For those paying attention, that's the same model number as AT&T sells today, but Apple's enabling support of the AWS bands from the factory on the new guy -- and sadly, Apple affirmed to us that it's not something that can be enabled via a simple software update for A1428 iPhone units already in circulation. To say that another way, existing iPhone 5 owners on AT&T cannot simply apply a software patch to have AWS support added. You'll need to buy a new phone next month.
That said, the A1428 edition of the iPhone 5 that Apple will start hawking on April 12th (in lockstep with T-Mobile's launch date) will arrive unlocked out of the box. By default, Apple will sell these at full MSRP in a "SIM-in unlocked fashion," as confirmed to us by an Apple representative here at T-Mobile's event in New York City. Of course, those wishing to pay T-Mob's advertised $99.99 up front price will also be able to do so right at an Apple store, but eager jetsetters that are simply looking for a frictionless way to purchase an unlocked iPhone 5 that works on both AT&T and T-Mobile's LTE bands have but a few weeks to wait.
Oh, and yes, we confirmed with Apple that the new A1428 will indeed support AT&T's LTE network. In other words, your T-Mobile iPhone 5 will run uninhibited on AT&T's LTE network if it's unlocked. To boot, Apple is quickly phasing out the existing A1428 hardware, and will soon replace all of them with the new, AWS-enabled model. In theory, that would mean that iPhones purchased through AT&T (after April 12th) would also ship with the appropriate firmware to let AWS support run free, but of course, then you're up against AT&T's far less friendly unlocking policy. For US users anxious to snag a truly unlocked iPhone 5 that'll hum along on pretty much every LTE band in the developed world, Apple informed us that its 24-hour locations will begin selling these promptly at 12:01AM on 4/12. For those who order from Apple's online site, you'll need to phone up T-Mobile to have the unlock applied.

An iPhone native to T-Mobile USA has been the stuff of legend for so long that we still have a hard time believing it's real, even after the carrier confirmed it in no uncertain terms. We're a little more credulous now that Apple has run the iPhone 5 through some class permission changes at the FCC. True to the words of Apple and T-Mobile, theupdated A1428 is now clear to use 42Mbps HSPA+ data on the AWS frequencies that the UnCarrier uses (along with smaller Canadian providers, we'd add). The refreshed iPhone doesn't have any surprises lurking underneath -- the LTE was already in place -- although that in itself isn't surprising. It's a mid-cycle tweak meant chiefly to expand Apple's market reach, and we wouldn't expect much more iPhone-related FCC action for awhile.

Android attacks have become all the rage in the last year or two, and targeted attacks against political activists in Tibet, Iran and other countries have been bubbling up to the surface more and more often. Now, those two trends have converged with the discovery of a targeted attack campaign that's going after Tibetan and Uyghur activists with a spear-phishing message containing a malicious APK file. Researchers say the attack appears to be coming from Chinese sources. The new campaign began a few days ago when unknown attackers were able to compromise the email account of a well-known Tibetan activist. The attackers then used that account to begin sending a series of spear-phishing messages to other activists in the victim's contact list. One of the messages referred to a human rights conference in Geneva in March, using the recipients' legitimate interest in the conference as bait to get them to open the attachment. The malicious attachment in the emails is named 'WUC's Conference.apk.'"

As Apple readies its next-generation iPad tablets to launch later this year, reports from Korea indicate the devices will no longer feature Samsung displays.
Initially reported by ETNews, Apple has issued its part estimates to the firm's component suppliers over its upcoming iPad and iPad mini devices and it is understood that Samsung's display department were absent from the list.
Previously, Samsung had provided displays for the iOS devices, along with bit Sharp and LG. However, it true, the reports would indicate that Samsung has been ditched.
In addition to providing displays for the iPad, Samsung has also traditionally produced processors for the devices too, but the report makes no mention as to whether the firm will continue to provide chips for Apple's flagship tablet.
Previous reports have indicated that Apple had contacted Intel with regards to the firm taking over as the chip manufacturer for the firm's iOS devices. Given the tested relationship between Apple and Samsung, word of a potential break up between the firms would be too much of a surprise.
Despite the report, Samsung has reportedly brushed off the claims.
ETNews quotes Samsung's vice chairman, Oh-hyun Kwon, as saying: "The orders [for components] can go up and down in the course of any business – some are sensitive about the issue, but I am not worried about it."
For now the report remains pure speculation, but the end of the Samsung-Apple relationship is inevitable, and could happen sooner rather than later.

BubblePix has released its BubbleScope camera for Samsung’s flagship Galaxy S3 smartphone.
Previously only available for iPhone 4, 4S and 5, the 360-degree camera can capture video and images and works in conjunction with the BubblePix app, enabling users to share their ‘bubbles’ with friends and other devices via a free online account.
Key features of the BubbleScope and BubblePix app include real time 360- degree previews, social media integration, library management, fully retractable glass optics, and neoprene protection case with cleaning cloth.
Each BubbleScope also comes with a connection case for the specified handset model. Cases are also sold separately, at a cost of £11.99, so users can take pictures across multiple devices if desired.
The BubbleScope works by using a precision engineered hemi-spherical glass mirror to capture the 360-degree environment around the device. An arrangement of corrective optics and an angled mirror then re-directs the light into the camera’s standard lens and produces a ‘doughnut’ shaped 360- degree image. The BubblePix App then ‘unwraps’ this doughnut into an immersive 360-degree image in real time, which can then be previewed and captured as a still image or a video.
The pocket-sized device operates in standard vertical screen position to enable users to view the screen and operate the app whilst capturing a level horizon image. The phone case is also discreet and thin so when the BubbleScope is not in use it has minimal affect to the feel and function of the smartphone.
The BubbleScope will also be available for BlackBerry Z10 from spring 2013, with a BubblePix app being available on the BlackBerry World storefront. It will be one of the first applications designed for the new BlackBerry 10 platform.
BubblePix will also be releasing a SDK for their solution for the BlackBerry 10 platform to allow third party application developers to create BubbleScope compatible applications and solutions The Galaxy S3 BubbleScope is available via Kondor and carries a price of £49.99.

A father whose 13-year-old son went on an app store spending spree could see the boy arrested in an attempt to "embarrass" Apple.
Local paper, This is Bristol, reports that Doug Crossan adopted an unique strategy when dealing with an excessive app store bill, by filing the incident with local police, which accuses the boy of committing fraud.
It is understood that Crossan's 13-year-old son Cameron spent over £3,700 on in-app content across a three-month period, with one purchase in particular costing upwards of £80.
Having witnessed similar incidents, where parents have been refunded the costs incurred over unauthorised app-purchases, Crossan had hoped to receive similar treatment.
But whilst Apple has recently clarified its position on app purchase refunds, the firm has reportedly dismissed Crossan's case, stating that all iTunes sales are final.
"We have asked Apple to consider our case in the same light, as the case is mirrored by him playing exactly the same free games, but Apple have refused by saying the sale on iTunes is final and no refund," claimed Crossan.
"Apple iTunes are now refusing to speak to me or give me an idea of why they will not refund. They sent me a copy of the terms and conditions stating that all purchases are final and further contact should be by way of a solicitor. None of us had any knowledge of what was happening as there was no indication in the game that he was being charged for any of the clicks made within the game."
Following Apple's dismissal of the case, Crossan hopes that filing the incident with local police will lead Apple to have a change of heart.
The father is even willing to see his teenage son arrested over the incident, if it will lead to a refund from Apple.
"I just wanted to call Apple's bluff... I am sure Cameron had no intention to do it but I had to have a crime reference number if there was any chance of getting any credit card payments refunded," said Crossan.
"In theory the local police station would contact me and ask for Cameron to come in to be interviewed. I could make it difficult of course and refuse to bring him in and they would have to come and arrest him. Really I just want to embarrass Apple as much as possible."

Pac-Man was always sort of like a free-to-play game – you had to pay into an arcade machine each time you wanted to try. Now, 32 years later, it's free-to-play for real on Android, with Pac-Man + Tournaments.
The game includes the original Pac-Man for free, along with a new "Tournaments" mode that offers power-up items and weekly tournaments with chances to win plush toys and other Pac-Man swag. This mode includes new downloadable mazes, which is where the extra costs come in. But if you just want some Pac-Man, that's free.

via http://ax86.patrickaalto.com/ablog.html
During the past couple of weeks I have been mainly fixing issues in the Raspberry Pi version rpix86 of my emulator. I just today released version 0.03 of it, and I hope that this version will now be able to support most of the possible keyboard/mouse input devices. My plan is to now move my main focus back to ax86, as I have been neglecting it for a while now. Of course all the changes and fixes I have made to rpix86 in the core emulation features will also affect ax86, but I have also spent quite some time working on the rpix86-specific features.
I did spend some time last week working on ax86, though. I started by first implementing the same audio features as what I did for rpix86. Currently they both can play SB digital audio and PC speaker sounds in addition to the AdLib support that has been working for a while already. I also noticed that Doom kept crashing randomly after I added the digital audio features to ax86. Since the addition of digital audio should not have caused any changes to the core emulation besides sending interrupts more frequently, I took a closer look at the interrupt synchronization, and noticed that I did not have proper mutex locks in one part of the interrupt handling system. I added the mutex locking and Doom stopped crashing. It is now quite nice to play Doom on my Android tablet, as it runs pretty fast and now also plays all the audio properly.
I had (somewhat stupidly) named my Android project "ax86Test" instead of "ax86" when I created it, so next I decided to rename it to the proper name. I don't need to keep it as a "test" project any more, as I am pretty sure it will actually work. :-) However, I made a mistake when renaming it, so that the whole project got lost from Eclipse. It took me a while to get it loaded and fixed again, but now after the renaming I noticed that it crashes if it does not find the 4DOS.COM command interpreter. Since my plan is to have ax86 automatically download 4DOS.COM if it is missing, I think this is now a good time to work on that feature. In rpix86 this was easy to do, I can simply call system("wget ftp://ftp.jpsoft.com/4dos/files/4dos.com"), but I think I will need to do this somewhat differently in Android. I will also need to let the user determine what directory to use as the C:\ root directory, what sort of a keyboard emulation to use, and so on. Quite a bit of work that is specific to the Android environment.

Yesterday on the unofficial Ouya console forums, forum administrator Ed Krassenstein announced that several emulators will officially be available on or near the launch (March 28) of the Android-based console. The additions of said emulators to the upcoming console have been in discussion since as early as July of last year (here, here and here). When released, these emulators can technically run classic Nintendo titles.
Wait, rewind. Is that something the creators of the moddable console can do? There's some legal grey area here. The hope, I imagine, is that Ouya owners will be able to play SNES, NES, N64 and other older Nintendo titles (like potentially N-Gage games, according to the forum and this tweet) through legal means, aka the proper IP licensing, or that they can play homebrew games made for those platforms.
This isn't necessarily new, as we've seen the Google Android store flooded with all sorts of emulators. But to have a representative of a rival console promote emulators for Nintendo's tech—the kind of emulators that traditionally are associated with piracy as much as they might be with homebrew—is strange.
When I reached out to an Ouya representative to figure out exactly what the boundaries and legality of these emulators are, they had this to say:OUYA will accept emulators as long as they adhere to our content guidelines and are not submitted with any games. Meaning, if they have games they would be breaking our IP infringement guidelines.
Here are those guidelines. But what happens when people start submitting games for those emulators? The response:They would have to have a legitimate license to the IP to submit content. Also the content would have to come in an .apk.
When asked to elaborate, I was told:We only accept .apks - ROM's won't be available / accepted in the OUYA store.
It's not clear if that .apk format requirement will effectively block users from figuring out a way to run pirated Nintendo games on the emulators. Especially when we've already seen the Ouya running an emulated game, likely not exactly legally.
In terms of Nintendo actually selling their games on the Ouya? Also not likely. I imagine Nintendo wouldn't easily give up access to their games, especially when their own console is capable of running their classics. Of course, there are ways to use an emulator legally. Like submitting content through the proper checkpoints.
I reached out to Nintendo but haven't heard back yet. I'll update as soon as I do.

Less than two years after the CyanogenMod founder was scooped up by Samsung to improve Android's veneer, Steve Kondik has decided to depart for greener pastures. In a Google Plus posting, the software engineer shared his mostly positive impressions forSamsung's Galaxy S 4, casually mentioning that he'd departed the Korean behemoth's embrace. The one thing that came in for a bashing was TouchWiz's updated UI, that he says "feels like it has been sent back a few years in time to the Froyo days." Responding to a comment, Mr. Kondik said that nothing in particular had prompted his departure beyond a desire to "do something new," but given the man's pedigree, we can only assume it'll be somehow related to the little green droid that could.
