Claims to be the only third party to offer cross-platform support to Microsoft's latest operating systems.
Barnes & Noble's Nook division recently announced it wasentering the freemium market by supporting developers with one-click in-app payments, with mobile payments provider Fortumo powering the move.
Now, Fortumo has announced in-app payments support for Microsoft, claiming it's the only third party solution to allow cross-platform integration for WinPho, Windows 8 and Windows RT.
It will enable developers add payments to apps and games across all desktops, laptops, tablets and smartphones running the relevant Microsoft OS via a single SDK. Consumers will be able to buy virtual currency and new features in two-clicks.
Martin Koppel, co-founder and chief revenue officer of Fortumo, said: "With Windows Phone we are seeing a repetition of what happened when Android launched – developers who were initially cautious in porting their apps to the new operating system are starting to see Windows Phone as a viable source of revenue.
"Our goal is to help developers who are making the move to Windows Phone easily monetise their users globally and with a more broadly accessible, higher converting payment method than credit cards."
While credit cards may be common in developing countries, Fortumo notes that emerging markets can have as many as ten times more mobile phone users than credit card owners.
John Richards, senior director Windows App Marketing for Microsoft , added: "Windows Store has already seen great traction with developers due to its unprecedented reach in over 200 markets. Microsoft’s flexibility in monetisation and industry-leading revenue sharing gives Windows 8 developers greater potential and more control over their revenue."
Fortumo will process payments for free when developers integrate in-app payments for Windows 8 or Windows Phone by May 31st, 2013. More info here: http://fortumo.com/windows8

Hardlight Studio’s endless runner Sonic Dash has ditched its price tag, and is now free to download on Apple’s App Store.
The change in price arrives alongside an update that adds daily challenges to the game, as well as improved performance for certain iOS devices.
The game was announced and subsequently released last month for $1.99, despite also including in-app purchases – a move that’s generally considered to be having your cake and eating it too with a mobile title.
Seems Sega has seen the light though, matching the game’s monetization methods with other mobile endless runners such as the popular Temple Run franchise.
Hardlight announced on Twitter that those who did purchase the title prior to the switch will find 10 free revive tokens as a way to make up for the sudden change in price.

Every year, AMD and NVIDIA re-brand their GPU product lines, regardless of whether the underlying hardware has changed. This annual maneuver is a sop to OEMs, who like yearly refreshes and higher numbers. The big introduction NVIDIA is making this year is what it calls GPU Boost 2.0. When NVIDIA launched the GTX Titan in February, it discussed a new iteration of GPU Boost technology that measured GPU temperature rather than estimating TDP. This new approach gave NVIDIA finer-grained control over clock speeds and thermal thresholds, thereby allowing for better dynamic overclocking. That technology is coming to the GeForce 700M mobile family. In notebooks, GPU Boost 2.0 is a combination of thermal and application monitoring. GPU Boost 2.0 is designed to reflect an important fact of 3D gaming — no two applications use the same amount of power. The variance can be significant, even within the same game. It's therefore possible for the GPU to adjust clocks dynamically in order to maximize frame rates. Put the two together, and NVIDIA believes it can substantially improve FPS speeds without compromising thermals or electrical safe operating margins.

An anonymous reader sends this quote from Forbes:"... it is an almost certainty that within the next few years, three biometric options will become standard features in every new phone: a fingerprint scanner built into the screen, facial recognition powered by high-definition cameras, and voice recognitionbased off a large collection of your vocal samples. ... We store an enormous amount of our most intimate and personal information on cell phones. Businesses today are already struggling with policies regarding bringing devices from home, and it’s only going to get more difficult. A study by Symantec highlighted the depth of the problem – around the world, all different types of companies consider enterprise mobile device security to be one of their largest challenges. ... Ever since Apple purchased Authentec Inc in July of last year, there has been an endless stream of news stories obsessing over whether Apple will include a fingerprint scanner in their next release. In reality, Apple is one among many players, and whether they include a biometric sensor in the 5S or wait till the 6 is largely irrelevant, the entire mobile industry has been headed this way for years now. ... There are separate questions as to whether these technologies are ready for such a wide-scale deployment."

ReadWrite has posted a thought-provoking piece on how mobile devices killing our boredom may also be killing our creativity. Quoting: 'Numerous studies and much accepted wisdom suggest that time spent doing nothing, being bored, is beneficial for sparking and sustaining creativity. With our iPhone in hand — or any smartphone, really — our minds, always engaged, always fixed on that tiny screen, may simply never get bored. And our creativity suffers. ... For example, psychology professor Gary Marcus distinguishes between the two primary types of pursuits we use to defeat boredom. "Boredom is the brain's way to tell you you should be doing something else. But the brain doesn't always know the most appropriate thing to do. If you're bored and use that energy to play guitar and cook, it will make you happy. But if you watch TV, it may make you happy in the short term, but not in the long term." So much of what we do on our smartphones, however, is decidedly short-term: a few moments playing a game while we stand in line, a minute to scan Instagram as the person in front of us at the grocery store pulls out their checkbook. ' Of course, you'll probably be reading this on a smartphone

Ouya, the open Android-based console designed by Yves Behar, is being shipped to its Kickstarter backers today, and the company officially announced this week at GDC that it will hit retailers in the US, UK and Canada on June 4. Ouya is promising "hundreds" of titles for the June 4 release and the $99 console will be available at Amazon, Best Buy, GAME, GameStop, Target, and the store on OUYA.tv. Additional controllers will be sold for $49.99. And for digital purchases, consumers will be able to get pre-paid cards with redeemable codes at retail if they wish.
The company said that over 8,000 game developers worldwide are currently developing games, including both up-and-comers and more well known game makers like Square Enix, Double Fine Productions, Tripwire Interactive, Vlambeer, Phil Fish's Polytron Corporation, and Kim Swift's Airtight Games. "The majority of devs so far are experienced devs who've never built an Android game before. About 1 out of 5 have never even built a game before," Ouya CEO Julie Uhrman toldGamesIndustry International at a GDC unveiling. She boasted that Ouya "already has more titles a couple months before launch than any console has ever launched with."
The Ouya hardware itself is even smaller than we had previously thought (think Rubik's Cube or smaller), and its sleek design and brushed aluminum is pleasing to the eye. Uhrman, however, stressed the controller more than anything else. "What we spent the most amount of time on is the controller. We really want this to be our love letter to gamers," she said, adding that Ouya focused on the ergonomics, the weight, the feel, and wanted it to be a precise, accurate controller. "This is one of the pieces of Ouya that evolved a lot based on early supporter feedback," she continued.

Pre-orders for micro-console now open at £79.99 as development kits land at studios
UK retailer GAME has snapped up the exclusive rights to sell PlayJam’s tiny Android TV console GameStick when it launches in June.
Pre-orders for the micro-games system have begun today, and can be purchased from the website for £79.99. The console will be available for pre-order in-store from June.
The news follows the announcement that Madfinger and Hutch Games will be bringing Shadowgun and Smash Cops to the console as launch titles, available for free.
Development kits meanwhile are expected to have begun shipping to developers this week, with pre-production prototypes containing different components for de-bugging and loading apps as well as extra features specifically for game development.
“We're really excited to be the only UK retailer to offer this product to the gaming community,” said GAME category director Charlotte Knight.

This isn't quite the BlackBerry earnings story you're waiting for -- after all, the US figures covering the success (or otherwise) of the Z10 won't arrive until the next quarter. Instead, we're looking at the company's results from the end of the fiscal year to March 2nd, which shows that the smartphone maker made $94 million in GAAP income on revenues of $2.7 billion -- in contrast with the $125 million net loss it made in the same quarter last year. More importantly, however, it shipped out almost one million BlackBerry 10 devices during the three weeks of the quarter that they were available. In addition, it managed to push five million of its older smartphones and 370,000 PlayBook tablets out of the door, but saw user numbers fall from 79 millionlast quarter to 76 million now.
As revenue has remained relatively flat, the surge in profits can only be attributed to Thorsten Heins' aggressive cost-cutting measures, with the CEO remarking that the "numerous changes" he has implemented at the company have "resulted in [BlackBerry] returning to profitability." At the same time, Mike Lazaridis has announced that he'll retire from his position as vice-chair and director of the outfit he founded the better part of three decades ago. He'll exit the business on May 1st so that he can concentrate on his new enterprise, Quantum Valley Investments.
Update: During the conference call, Thorsten Heins has revealed that around two-thirds or three-quarters of the one million BB10 devices shipped have been sold.

Behold, the iPhone 6. Nah, we're only joking -- what you see above is a diagram lifted from an Apple patent application that popped up at the USPTO today, which describes a "consumer electronic product" that's nothing but screen. The patent involves building a device from an open-ended transparent body (of glass, for example) that becomes a full wrap-around display when a flexible AMOLED screen is unfurled within it. It doesn't imagine all that real-estate will necessarily be used at once, though, and includes details of a "detection mechanism," such as a camera and facial recognition software, which would determine how much of the screen you can see, so that power is only sent to the parts that are in view. It's important to note that, apart frommentioning some real-world applications, the concept and method of constructing a wrap-around display are all the application covers. In other words, this patent does not describe anything close to a complete device. Apologies if we've killed your buzz, but we're just managing expectations before we move onto some interesting spitballing from Apple about what other design features such a device could carry -- read on after the break for more.

Not too long after the Samsung Galaxy S 4 was announced, we started hearing whispers of a "miniature" version of the device -- which makes sense, given the Galaxy S III had a smaller sidekick of its own. Today, however, Bloomberg reported the unannounced device is indeed coming soon after the flagship makes its appearance at the end of April. If it follows a similar pattern to its bite-sized predecessor, it likely will be offered in Europe as a lower-cost alternative to the Galaxy S 4. The device is rumored to offer a dual-core 1.6GHz processor, a 4.3-inch display and 8MP camera. Sadly, no official details were given, but we've reached out to Samsung officials for comment and will update when we receive word.
Update: Samsung pinged back with the following comment, which doesn't do much towards confirming or denying whether or not the GS 4 mini is indeed on the horizon. A spokesperson informed us: "We have not announced the product mentioned in the Bloomberg story."

Android micro-console could become destination for classic gaming
The forthcoming Ouya console may become a destination for emulation of classic games.
According to a post on the Ouya forums, the leading Android emulator developer Robert Broglia is bringing "all" of his work to the platform.
Broglia's work includes emulators for GameBoy Advance, GameBoy Color, Sega Genesis/Mega Drive, Sega Master System, Sega Saturn, NES, SNES, N64, Neogeo and Atari 2600. The first to launch will be Snes9x EX+, which promises , "near complete game compatibility."
Broglia's interest in the Ouya helps to answer one of the major outstanding questions around the validity of the platform: the availability of games. In February, former thatgamecompany exec Kellee Santiago was hired as head of developer relations for Ouya.
"Ouya gets it," said Santiago at the time. "This is the first console company that really understands how important it is to remove the barriers to development. By freeing up the development process, Ouya is opening up new doors in console gaming."
Portal developer Kim Swift was also confirmed to be developing a game for the platform.

Much-loved fighting game coming to tablets, phones from ex-Lionhead team
Another Place, the team formed of some of the top talent who worked on the Fable series at Lionhead, has revealed that they're working on an ambitious reboot of fighting title Rag Doll Kung-Fu for iPad, iPhone and iPod touch.
The team, which consists of Jeremie Texier, Guillaume Portes and John McCormack, all have a shared history at Lionhead with Mark Healy, the creator of the original Rag Doll Kung-Fu. Whilst searching for a first project for their new studio to work on, they spoke to Mark who revealed that Sony's lease on the IP, from PSN sequel Fists of Plastic, had expired and that he'd be more than happy to see his ex colleagues revitalise the game.
What's resulted is a game rebuilt for touch controls from the ground up, which the team says feels like it has found its natural home on touchscreen devices.
In fact, having spent so long working at a AAA studio with 100+ colleagues, restraining their natural ambition has actually proven to be the team's biggest challenge yet.
"When we started, we came at it with a console mind. We had a load of ideas, but they we're all a bit grand. We've had to retrain our brains," said artist John McCormack. "But we realised that the best thing to do would be something quick, to really polish a little game and get it out there. Then strangely enough this opportunity comes along."
With plans for multi-layered monetisation based around customisation, upgrade trees, multiplayer online leaderboards and tournaments, single-player survival modes, bullet-time and a mode which offers a nod to Shaolin Soccer, it's clear that the three developers have yet to fully shake off the ambition which saw them reach such success at Lionhead, but they've also learned a lot of lessons about project creep.
"We can't wait to get started on all these other modes," continues McCormack, "but we really want to get the basics solid first. Hopefully we're currently looking at late June or July for submission."

With a lot of fanfare the Indian Government had launched a $35 tablet named Aakash (The Sky). Despite skepticism, the government went ahead with the project. But delays in production and deployment of the tablet have left the project in risk of failure. The manufacturer has been unable to supply the required 100,000 units, and a deadline of March 31has been set. The new minister Pallam Raju says: 'Aakash is only a tablet... there are other such devices as well. While work will continue to develop it and increase its productivity, manufacturing is obviously a problem.'"For what it's worth, they did manage to ship 17,000 of them. It looks like meeting the deadline is impossible and the $35 tablet is dead.

Microsoft mobile OS still only holds around three per cent market share.
While Windows Phone devices may only account for around three per cent market share, it was announced this week that smartphones on the Microsoft mobile OS outstripped iPhone in seven countries during Q4,Mashable has reported.
The announcement was made via a blog post from Frank Shaw, Microsoft’s head of public relations.
However, after The New York Times asked IDC – the research company that provided the data – which countries saw Windows Phone outsell iPhone, it emerged that one of the seven countries was, in fact, a group of smaller countries categorised as ‘the rest of central and Eastern Europe’.
The other six countries proper were Argentina, India, Poland, Russia, South Africa and Ukraine.
To contextualise the stats, IDC analyst Kevin Restivo pointed out that Windows Phone sold less than 100,000 units during Q4 2012 in Ukraine, South Africa and ‘the rest of central and eastern Europe’.
He also noted that Windows Phone performs expecially well in nations that are renowned strongholds for Nokia.
