Remember how yesterday's release of iOS 6.1.3 was supposed to fix a security hole that allowed one to bypass the lock screen? Well, turns out Apple's got a bit more work to do. Today, a new lock screen sidestep was revealed by YouTube user VideosdeBarraquito, and this time around, running iOS 6.1.3 won't do you any good. The bypass involves invoking a telephone call by voice command and then ejecting the SIM card at a specific event. After a few steps, access to a users contact list and photo gallery becomes easily accessible. The upside? If you're genuinely concerned about your security, you can plug this hole yourself by disabling the voice dial option from the Password Lock screen within system settings. You can view the complete exploit after the break. As for Apple, looks like it's back to the drawing board.

Samsung's Neil Sharma has warned the console companies to start regarding mobile devices as their "first screens" to avoid financial calamity.
During a panel at SXSW Interactive, attended by Polygon, Sharma said that the console gaming industry still considers smartphones and tablets as "second screens" in terms of importance.
"I would posit that it is the first screen," said Sharma, vice president and general manager of Samsung Telecommunications. "I would also posit that it's an inflection point that, if it's not looked at carefully, the gaming industry's going to move by and miss it, and there are going to be companies that go out of business."
According to Sharma, the rapid rate of progress in mobile hardware - and the number of emerging solutions that will allow smartphones to communicate seamlessly with connected TVs - will leave consoles at a clear disadvantage in the near future.
"That's the state of that industry," he told Polygon. "Outpace, out-innovate. We have so much technology on tablets and smartphones today. Doesn't matter which company it is, it's just, that's the level of innovation. Quad-core processor? It's in all of them. Two years ago, it's, 'quad-core processor? Are you kidding me?'"
Sharma also drew parallels to his time as business development manager for Microsoft, where he attempted to make Windows Media Player a platform for streaming video. Microsoft and other big companies focused on quality and brands, but YouTube stole a march by pushing social integration and community.
"When you use the word quality, you've actually plateaued," Sharma said. "You've come to an area where you can't bounce further. It's a good touch-point to say, 'What else is going on out there?' I feel it as I walk around the gaming industry. I hear that a lot: 'Look at the graphics! Look at the quality!' I say, 'Okay, I've been through this in my lifetime. I've got to step back.'"

Up iOS update that closes a lockscreen security loophole has also put a stop to a popular iPhone jailbreak.
Gizmodo reports that update 6.1 has killed the exploits used by the Evasi0n jailbreak – a hassle free method of freeing iPhones and iPads from Apple’s closed-wall operating system.
Users who update their jailbroken handset to 6.1 will find that their modifications will have vanished after reboot. Gizmodo speculates that it could be a fair while until iOS is cracked again.
In today’s day an age of Android smartphones, however, the hunger to crack iPhones and iPads has lessened with the community instead shifting to Google’s far more open platform.

Apple has released a new update for iOS that prevents the jailbreak evasi0n released last month. But that hacking tool has already become the most popular jailbreak ever: It's been used to remove the software restrictions on 18.2 million devices in the 43 days between its release and the patch, according to data from Cydia, the app store for jailbroken devices. In its announcement of the update, Apple says it has fixed six bugs and was polite enough to credit the hackers behind evasi0n with finding four of them. At least one of the bugs used by evasi0n remains unpatched, according to David Wang, one of evasi0n's creators. And Wang says that he and his fellow hackers still have bugs in reserve for a new jailbreak, although they plan to keep them secret until the next major release."

March 20th, 2013, 23:44 Posted By: wraggster
Why did Apple hire former Adobe CTO Kevin Lynch as vice president of technology? Adobe and Apple spent years fighting a much-publicized battle over the latter's decision to ban Adobe Flash from iOS devices. Former Apple CEO Steve Jobs was very public in his condemnation of Flash as a tool for rich-content playback, denigrating it in an April 2010 letter posted on Apple's Website as flawed with regard to battery life, security, reliability and performance. Lynch was very much the public face of Adobe's public-relations pushback to Apple's criticism; in a corporate video shot for an Adobe developer conference in 2009, (Hat tip to Daring Fireball's John Gruber for digging that video up.) As recently as 2010, he was still arguing that Flash was superior to HTML5, which eventually surpassed it to become the virtual industry standard for Web-based rich content. It's interesting to speculate whether Steve Jobs would have hired someone who so publicly denigrated Apple's flagship product. But Jobs is dead, and his corporate successors in Cupertino—tasked with leading Apple through a period of fierce competition — obviously looked at Lynch and decided he'd make a perfect fit as an executive."

Smartphone trade-ins up 35 per cent after last week’s launch.
Last week’s launch of the Samsung Galaxy S 4 has led to a significant increase in the number of HTC and BlackBerry trade-ins, SellMyMobile.com has revealed.
The company’s data shows that overall smartphone trade-ins have risen by 35 per cent since the Galaxy S 4 was officially announced.
Yet, it appears to be HTC and BlackBerry users who are most enamoured by the new Samsung handset, with respective trade-in spikes of 82 per cent and 56 per cent recorded within days of the launch.
However, the unveiling of the Galaxy S 4 doesn’t seem to have convinced too many Apple fans to jump into bed with the enemy, with only a five per cent increase in iPhone trade-ins. This is in contrast to a 61 per cent rise in Apple trade-ins after the launch of the iPhone 5 last year.
While the official price of the Samsung Galaxy S 4 has yet to be confirmed, one recycler has already given the device a £300 trade-in price on SellMyMobile.com if people register to trade-in early, compared to £242 for a Samsung Galaxy S3.
The data from SellMyMobile.com also shows that Apple devices tend to be the best investment in terms of holding value over a long period of time, with Apple handsets accounting for three out of the top five most valuable phones.
Elsewhere, the value of Samsung’s Galaxy S2 has plummeted by 16 per cent over the past four weeks, and the Galaxy S3 has also dropped from £260 to £250 following last month’s MWC event.
In stark contrast, the iPhone 5 16GB has retained its trade in-value of £311, despite the arrival of a raft of new devices since.
Colin White, managing director at SellMyMobile.com, commented: “The rise in trade-ins of HTC and BlackBerry devices highlights the increasing rivalry between handset giants as consumers cash-in on the old in exchange for the new. But it’s interesting to see that despite the hype, we haven’t seen the same surge in trade-ins that we do with most Apple device launches.â€
“With new devices launching so regularly, we often see tech-savvy consumers trading in their old handsets even before the new device hits the shops, as this is when trade-in values are at their highest. But with so many devices launching every month, prices fluctuate according to supply and demand. So if you’re looking to trade-in your old device, make sure you use a price comparison recycling site to guarantee you get the best deal, no matter which device you have.â€

Some developers claim they're too busy to consider it as an option.
Kids Best iPad Apps is a reviews site that offers parents and teachers guidance on the top children's apps available for Apple's tablet. During a survey of 440 apps, the company found that just 24 per cent (104) of apps offer a privacy policy option on their App Store promotional pages.
That said, while the option was available for 24 per cent, a common result of clicking the link was being redirected to a website without a privacy policy anywhere in sight.
Mitchell Cogert, CEO of Kids Best iPad Apps, said: "Given the importance of this issue, our site has stopped reviewing apps without a published privacy policy. Parents need reassurance that developers are not taking advantage of an app's access to their children. Parents can visit our site today and find out if an app is collecting information from their kids.
"When I contacted developers about this issue, I found they are so busy creating the next great kids app, they haven't even thought about a privacy policy. This seems especially true with developers outside the US."

Is Samsung’s latest arrival really that much better than its predecessor?
Today’s Dialaphone article takes a look at the recently unveiled Samsung Galaxy S 4 to see just how different it is to the manufacturer’s enormously successful Galaxy S 3...
The hugely-anticipated Samsung Galaxy S4 was finally unveiled to the world last week, and early benchmark results reveal that the handset is already powering ahead of its rivals in terms of performance.
Benchmark figures calculated using Geekbench 2, which measures the processor and memory performance of devices, shows that Samsung’s new flagship is far more powerful than the HTC One, iPhone 5, BlackBerry Z10 and its predecessor, the Galaxy S 3.
Yet, despite its premium specs and raft of new features, the Galaxy S4 has seen only a few minor tweaks to its design (which follows on from the Galaxy S 3), and this has led to a bout of criticism, particularly from rival smartphone manufacturers.
But will Samsung’s latest offering have what it takes to reach the same level of success achieved by the multi-million selling Galaxy S 3?

Despite 90 per cent saying data allowance is highly important when choosing a contract.
Mobile VoIP provider Rebtel has surveyed smartphone users to determine their data knowledge to find that while consumers like the idea of data, they don't really know what it means.
90 per cent of respondents said data played a big part in choosing their phone contracts, though 23.1 per cent say they didn't know app usage can swallow their allowance, and 15.7 per cent said they were unsure.
Just 30.4 per cent of respondents have an all you can eat data package, which means the opportunity to encounter a bill shock could happen very easily. Indeed, a third of consumers thought that 1GB of data would allow ten hours of mobile video viewing, so they'll likely be disappointed to hear they'd only receive around two hours worth.
41.5 per cent added that they'd be ‘likely’ or ‘very likely’ to consider only buying data from operators in the future to use VoIP apps like Rebtel and Skype to make voice calls.
Andreas Bernstrom, CEO at Rebtel, says: "One of the key factors in the dizzying rise of the smartphone in recent years is the mainstream adoption of apps into our daily lives. Despite this, our research hints that many mobile users still lack a basic understanding of data and how it works.
"With the advent of 4G networks we are seeing an end to operators offering ‘all you can eat’ data packages and a return to complex and often expensive tiered access offerings. With such a large number of users unaware that apps can drain their data it does raise concern that many consumers will find themselves facing unnecessarily large mobile bills."

March 20th, 2013, 23:31 Posted By: wraggster
Despite focusing on security with the new operating system, BlackBerry 10 devices have been deemed not secure enough for use with sensitive government work.
Initially reported by The Guardian, it is understood that the UK's Computer Experts Security Group tested the new devices but found them to be vulnerable to threats.
The decision is a huge blow to BlackBerry, which recently partnered with security firm Secusmart in order to boost the new range of devices' protection.
Balance, a new feature for BB10, which resulted from the partnership between the two firms, allowed users to partition their data on the BlackBerry device, whilst letting them send encrypted communications such as voice calls, text messages, web browsing and emails.
BlackBerry had previously been the preferred devices for government workers, with the firm's previous handiest passing the CESG's security guidelines as a result of their tight security.
However, officials throughout the past year have increasingly turned to Apple's iPhone and Android devices.
The news comes as BlackBerry launches its BB10 devices in the US. Whilst the Z10 handset launched here in the UK back in January, there is yet to be any word on the firm's upcoming Q10 device.
Whilst there has been no official word from BlackBerry over a potential release date or pricing, online retailer eCrater has been spotted offering the device with a price tag of £357. Additionally, Carphone Warehouse also hinted that it would begin selling the device later this month.
UPDATE: GCHQ has issued a further statement to PCR, clarifying that initial reports surrounding BlackBerry 10 devices are incorrect and that the firm is yet to perform an evaluation of the devices security.
"Discussions with BlackBerry are ongoing about the use of the BlackBerry 10 platform in government. We have not yet performed an evaluation of the security of that platform, but we expect to be issuing Platform Guidance in the summer," said a GCHQ spokesperson, "This will cover a number of platforms including Blackberry 10 and the use of Balance."
"We have a long standing security partnership with BlackBerry and this gives us confidence that the BlackBerry 10 platform is likely to represent a viable solution for UK Government."

March 20th, 2013, 23:29 Posted By: wraggster
After suffering a number of delays, the firm behind the Wikipad gaming tablet has announced it is set to launch the device later this spring.
Originally launched at CES in 2010, a number of delays pushed its release date back into the following year. Then scheduled to launch last October, the Wikipad suffered a further setback after the company stated it required “minor refinementâ€.
Initially a ten-inch tablet device, the Wikipad has undergone a number of changes since its postponed release. Most notably, the new device now packs a smaller seven-inch screen and is to be available for $249 – seeing its original price tag of $500 halved.
Discussing the decision to scale down the device, the firm’s president of sales, Fraser Townley emphasised the desire to maintain a competitive price point.
“We wanted to get Wikipad into our community’s hands and what we found was that the smaller seven-inch form factor just seemed right,†said Townley. “The smaller frame delivers an aggressive price while keeping the same specs.†On the inside the Wikipad remains entirely unchanged. The device is powered by an Nvidia Tegra 3 processor and runs on Google’s Android 4.1 Jelly Bean operating system, whilst offering 1GB of RAM, up to 32GB of on-board storage and a battery life of roughly eight hours.
The Wikipad is designed as a cloud gaming device and is compatible with services such as OnLive, PlayStation Mobile and Google Play.
What makes the device different from rival seven-inch tablets is its inclusion of a detachable gaming controller capable of housing the device, one that closely resembles the controller offered by rival Razer’s gaming tablet, the Edge.
The Wikipad lacks the specs of rival gaming devices such as the Edge or perhaps even Windows’ Surface Pro device – but also lacks the high price tag, costing half of both rival devices.
Scheduled for a spring US launch, Townley assured European consumers the device’s launch won’t be far off: “We’ve had great feedback on the seven-inch version and everyone who’s been hands-on with it can’t wait. As soon as we have street dates and prices we’ll be the first to let everyone know.â€

The XBMC crew hasn't been distracted by its early work on XBMC 13 Gotham -- it's more than willing to share the love with those who are still busy with Frodo's adventures. A just-launched XBMC 12.1 update improves the experience in several ways on Apple platforms, rolling up iOS 6 support for second-generation Apple TVboxes, making full use of the iPhone 5's expanded screen and bringing support in OS X for both the default audio device and playback acceleration from Intel GPUs. There's a number of upgrades elsewhere as well: XBMC no longer monopolizes audio in Linux, runs more reliably on the Raspberry Pi and supports more Xbox 360 controllers and HDMI-CEC devices. Android has received an audio control tweak of its own and the software is available in seven new languages We'd say 12.1 is a near-automatic download if XBMC is the cornerstone of your living room, hit the source to find out everything new that awaits, or check out the Github link.

Samsung's Galaxy S 4 isn't even available yet, but already it's being eyed for possible patent infringement. According to a report from Korea's Yonhap News, LG suspects the S 4 might violate eye-tracking patents used in the Optimus G Pro. At the crux of this squabble is Samsung's Smart Pause feature, which LG finds similar to its Smart Videotechnology. Chiefly, LG is focusing on a patent it applied for in 2009, though the company also plans to investigate whether Samsung infringed other eye-tracking patents dating back to 2005. So far, of course, Samsung has denied any wrongdoing, saying its eye-tracking tech is implemented differently and is based on proprietary technology. Given that the phone isn't even out yet, we'll leave it to LG to do its due diligence before accusing Samsung in court.

In 2011 Apple found itself in some hot water for failing to provide the legally required two-year warranty to European consumers. But, since being slapped with a €900,000 fine by Italy in December of that year, few other countries have taken any signifcant action. That's led European Justice Commissioner Viviane Reding to call on the nations of the European Union to step up their enforcement efforts and to cooperate more on consumer protection issues. She also said that the Justice Commission should take a more prominent role in helping various state institutions work together. The call for stricter enforcement comes after only five EU members took any action against Apple for openly flouting the Union's Warranty laws -- and just two (Italy and Bulgaria) imposed any financial penalties. Denmark, Finland, Luxembourg and Belgium are still investigating the company, but it's not clear what consequences if any remain to be faced. The company has begun to alter its warranty policies to fall more inline with local laws, but there are still concerns about the specific wording that leave room for abuse.

A month to the day after Apple issued iOS 6.1.2 in order to patch an Exchange bug, the company has pushed out iOS 6.1.3 today to seal up a security hole that allowed a complex combination of finagling to bypass one's lock screen. Moreover, it's said to add Maps updates for the nation of Japan, while also adding a variety of undisclosed "security patches." It looks as if all modern iOS devices (iPad and iPod touch included) are eligible, so feel free to hit up the Settings menu on your device or plug it into iTunes. If you aren't seeing it right away (as is the case with this particular editor's iPhone 4S), just keep trying. And trying. And trying.

Who would've thought that letting consumers pay what they think is fair for quality games would prove popular? That's the concept behind Humble Bundle, and so far, it's been rather good to developers and charities alike. Now, deals from the company are set to get a whole lot more frequent, as it's just announced weekly game sales that'll supplement the monthly bundle offers. You'll find a new game from Humble Bundle go up for sale each Tuesday, and to kick things off, the company is starting with Bastion, an RPG from Supergiant Games. Just $1 nets you a Steam key to the game, but if common decency isn't enough of a reason to pay more, you'll find bonus content and merchandise up for grabs, too. This week's charities include the EFF and Child's Play, but you've only got seven days to act before another game takes its place.

A pre-production version of the Android console is coming
The company behind the Android-powered GameStick console has announced that the developer's unit will be shipping out later this month. According to today's update on Kickstarter, the dev unit is slightly larger than the final production unit to accommodate a Type A USB slot for keyboard/mouse input.
The team is finalizing the software development kit for the GameStick, adding support for a wide variety of code bases. On day one, the GameStick team expects to support C++, Java, Marmalade, and Unity. The SDK will be released during GDC.
The Kickstarter update revealed that the final production GameStick Controller is almost ready for prime time.
"The final controller maps are done, the 3D drawings complete and with the tooling shop for development of the molds for the injection molding machines. Making this controller almost gave the lead mechanical engineer a heart attack but he has worked wonders to fit everything into such a small space," said the update.
The update goes on to say that GameStick has been "overwhelmed by the interest from pretty much every major retailer in the world".

Awesome Baby Names may seem like an innocuous app at first glance, but it hides dark things under the surface.
That is, dark things if you’re one of those who is opposed to retro game emulation. Of which Apple is certainly is, so expect this app to be pulled very shortly.
Pocket Gamer has translated a story from iPhoneBlog.dewhich explains how owners of the app can with just a few well placed taps access a Game Boy Advance emulator hidden within Awesome Baby Names.
Furthermore, users won’t need to jailbreak their iOS device to play the games. All they will need is a free bit of firmware with which they can dump GBA ROMs downloaded from the internet directly into their phone’s directories.
The site reckons the emulator itself is of rather poor quality. And with an abundance of emulators already available on Google’s Android, this development is unlikely to ruffle too many feathers

Samsung's Galaxy S 4 might not offer much in the way of an exciting new exterior design, but inside, it's a completely different story. The retooled internals on the U.S. version of the Galaxy S 4 were put to the test by benchmark specialists Primate Labs and the results are impressive, to say the least. The Galaxy S 4 scored a 3,163 on the standard Geekbench 2 speed test, just shy of twice the iPhone 5's score of 1,596. That score was also good enough to top the upcoming HTC One, the Nexus 4 and the previous-generation Galaxy S III."
