We never used to take the speakers in phones or tablets very seriously. Frankly, we're not sure manufacturers did either. But the old assumption that tiny = tinny is starting to seem a bit unfair. Last year, Dutch chip-maker NXP released a new type of mobile audio component -- the TFA9887 -- that allowed a mobile device to monitor its speaker system in real-time in order to max out volume without risking damage to the driver. Although NXP is way too modest to confirm it, we happen to know that this chip made its way into a number of HTC devices, including the new One, One X+ and 8X, where it's been described as "feedback" speaker technology.
The extra voltage delivered to speakers by this generation of component hasn't been especially wild -- just a couple of volts above the industry norm of around 3V. But what you're about to hear after the break is the next-gen TFA9890, which is expected to appear in devices around the middle of this year, and which racks things all the way up to 9.5V. This promises to be a much more audible leap relative to traditional no-feedback speaker systems, and you should be able to spot the difference for yourself after the break.

Android is quickly becoming the dominant mobile force in China, with the platform reportedly expected to seize an estimated 80 per cent of the Chinese market’s mobile game revenue in 2013.
In a guest post on Venturebeat, US General Manager of china-based international developer CocoaChina Lei Zhang pointed to several key reasons that has Google outfoxing Apple for the vast majority of the nation’s market.
The developer’s most successful franchise, Fishing Joy, is currently generating $4m gross revenue each month, driven heavily by in-app purchases on Android devices with ultra-broad coverage and carrier-billing.
“These numbers are not unique — other developers have reported revenue on a similar scale from Android games,” Zhang said.
The developer believes while the rest of the world is enamored with the image of iOS, China is going a different route.
“Experts have long assumed that it was only a matter of time before Apple conquered China’s mobile phone market, predicting in January of 2012 that key partnerships could lead to sales of 40m units. As of the second half of 2012, however, some reports showed that iPhones accounted for only 7.5 per cent of the Chinese smartphone market. The prevalence of third-party Android stores alone (at last count there are at least 200) demonstrates Android’s market dominance.”
Zhang added that in contrast, rival Samsung alone accounted for more than 20 per cent of the superior Android market.
China surpassed the US in iOS and Android device activation last June, with the market still very much on the rise. In 2013, the total Chinese smart device gaming market is expected to come in at $793m.

Apple shifts 27.4m units.
Strategy Analytics has released smartphone shipment figures for the final quarter of 2012, and it was Apple's iPhone 5 that the captured the hearts of the public, bagging a 12.6 per cent market share, equivalent to 27.4m handsets.
The Cupertino firm continued its stronghold with the iPhone 4S in second place having sold 17.4m devices, while Samsung's Galaxy S III moved 15.4m units. It's a flip reverse from Q3 when the S III was the top dog, the 4S was still second, the the 5 was in third position.
Neil Shah, senior analyst at Strategy Analytics, said: "The iPhone 5 captured an impressive 13 per cent share of all smartphones shipped globally and it has become the world's best-selling smartphone model for the first time ever. A rich touchscreen design, extensive distribution across dozens of countries, and generous operator subsidies have been among the main causes of the iPhone 5's success."
Neil Mawston, executive director at Strategy Analytics, added: "Samsung's Galaxy S3 has long proven wildly popular with consumers and operators across North America, Europe and Asia. However, global demand for the Galaxy S3 appears to have peaked and Samsung will surely be keen to introduce its rumored Galaxy S4 upgrade in the coming weeks to fight back against Apple's popular iPhone range."

As BlackBerry hopes to force its way into the smartphone market with its new operating system BB10, its attempt will no doubt be damaged by its lack of one of the world's most popular apps.
It is reported that Instagram has no plans to produce a native version of its photo-sharing app for the BB10 operating system.
Tech site AllThingsD first broke the news, quoting an unnamed source familiar with the situation as saying: "There will be no [native] Instagram for BB10 for now. Frankly, I'm not sure there will ever be."
Despite launching just last month, BB10 has already seen its issues over its app store and the number of apps on offer.
Following the launch of the firm's new OS, BlackBerry's VP of global alliances and business development, Martyn Mallick, told reporters: "40 per cent of BB10 apps are wrapped Android applications."
Today's news will serve a further blow to BlackBerry as consumers look for reasons as to why they should adopt the new OS and one of the firm's newly released smartphones.
Whilst Instagram will likely make its way to the OS as a port of the Android app, these are typically less user-friendly than native apps and can often lead to a number of additional bugs and issues.
However, whistle lacking the support of Instagram, BlackBerry has managed to get its hands on a number of other popular apps, including the likes of Facebook, Twitter and LinkedIn.

Sony's now obsolete PS3 may be the Netflix streaming deviceof choice, but that doesn't mean the popular streaming service will ignore other platforms. The Netflix app on iOS, which saw its last big refresh back in September last year, has just been bumped up to v3.0 -- bringing with it a slew of UI changes aimed towards improving your movie-watching experience. The zoom icon that was removed previously is now back for easier access to full-screen viewing, while a tap displays video titles if you're using the app on the iPad. The three-point change log also includes a relocation of the playback controls. Nothing profound, but hey -- could be worth your while if it keeps you away from reality just a little longer.

The mobile gaming space has been trendier than the dedicated handheld gaming world for a while, but it's now bigger, to boot. According to the inaugural Portable Gaming Report from analytics firm App Annie and International Data Corporation, consumers spent more on iOS App Store and Google Play games than on software for dedicated gaming handhelds like the 3DS and PlayStation Vita in 2012.
The report also drove home the significance of gaming to the mobile marketplaces. While roughly one-third of the downloaded apps were games, those efforts accounted for more than 60 percent of iOS spending, and close to 80 percent of Google Play consumer spending. In all, more than 20 billion games were downloaded to smartphones and tablets in 2012. As for underlying operating systems, Android "significantly outpaced" iOS adoption rates last year, claiming a 54 percent share of the market compared to Apple's 18 percent.
App Annie and IDC are planning to release quarterly Portable Gaming Reports to chart the cell phone and tablet gaming market alongside worldwide software shipments for traditional gaming handhelds.

A 29-year-old woman discovered her iPad had been stolen following a commute on the Eurostar from Paris to Kings Cross St Pancras. She swiftly alerted the police of her missing tablet, who then proceeded to track it via the Find My iPad app.
It turns out the pinched ÂŁ800 Apple gadget was being held hostage in Bromley-by-Bow by two men aged 27 and 28, who were arrested by officers on arrival. The crooks are currently out on bail pending further investigation, while the victim will be reunited with the device.
PC Michael Richman, of British Transport Police, said: "Thanks to the victim activating the tracking app, officers were able to recover the iPad and arrest two men in connection with the theft.
"These applications, available on many smartphones and tablets, can help owners protect their belongings and can also be very useful in helping us narrow down an item’s location, increasing the chance that a potential thief will be caught."
A similar scenario happened a year ago when the boys in blue used 'Find My iPhone' to locate robbers that attacked a 15-year-old.

Largest retail and entertainment complex in the US makes switch due to close integration with Microsoft services.
Mall of America, the US’ largest retail and entertainment complex, is to provide its management team with Nokia Lumia 920s, having previously provided its staff with BlackBerry devices.
The switch was made on account of the device’s tight integration with Microsoft services and Microsoft Office suite.
It was also announced earlier this week that Foxtons had struck a business deal with Nokia to provide around 900 employees with Lumia 820 handsets.
Built on the Microsoft Windows Phone 8 platform, the Lumia 920 allows out-of-the-box access to Microsoft apps and services, including Outlook, Word, Excel, PowerPoint, OneNote and SkyDrive.
These apps integrate with the mall's existing Microsoft services, enabling Mall of America’s management team to review and edit Outlook emails and Microsoft Office documents on the go via their smartphones.
"Switching to the Nokia Lumia 920 has increased productivity for key team members. The combination of a great smartphone with built-in Microsoft Office suite enables our team to work collaboratively, and SkyDrive ensures we can back up and access our work, wherever we are and whenever we want," said Janette Smrcka, IT director at Mall of America.
"With more than 400 events every year, from music acts to celebrity book signings, the ability to capture, edit and share images from the Nokia Lumia 920's PureView camera enables team members to provide instant high-quality imagery and real time updates to social media fans and our business customers. When you combine this with all of the Windows Phone 8 platform's business capabilities, at a price we can afford, we've got a device we're really proud to use," she added.
The Nokia Lumia 920's Live Tiles is designed to offer intelligent, interactive apps, displaying the latest emails, news, documents and people updates as and when they happen. Meanwhile the People Hub in Windows Phone 8 helps organise teams, allowing staff to set-up groups and stay in touch with co-workers across text, Facebook, Twitter, instant messaging and email.
"Mall of America is a great example of how all the business features of the Nokia Lumia 920, combined with its social capabilities, can make a great work device," said Stephanie Mosticchio, enterprise sales manager for North America at Nokia. "The Windows Phone 8 platform has meant the company's employees have been able to transition quickly, due to its built-in and familiar Microsoft Outlook and Office Mobile applications. From the intuitive integration with Microsoft services, to Live Tiles and People Hub making it easy to stay close to what matters, all wrapped in the beautiful polycarbonate body of the Nokia Lumia 920, it offers everything a mobile workforce could ask for."

Users of Android-based Samsung phones may be forced to perform factory resets due to copy-paste bug.
Samsung devices running TouchWiz and Android 3.0 or higher have a fatal clipboard bug that can completely brick up the device, making it permanently unusable until a hard reset is issued.
Whenever a user tries to copy something, the following error occurs in the system ClipboardManager class:
java.lang.NullPointerException at android.content.ClipboardManager.
setPrimaryClip(ClipboardManager.java:146)
The fault seems to lie within the Samsung software and there has been a number of complaints onSamsung’s forum going as far back as October.
It is reported that the Jelly Bean 4.1.2 update will fix the problem, unfortunately it is not yet available for all devices.
If you do end up with a bricked phone, hard-reset.com has a detailed list of hard resets for Samsung devices.

A new patent filed by Apple shows off a device, which strongly mirrors the firm's highly rumoured iWatch device.
Patent applications includes what appears to be the recently showcased flexible screen technology, in addition to a "bi-table spring"
To you and I, that's code for one of those slap-on bracelets you wore as a kid. Still, the drawings of the device certainly look impressive.

CyanogenMod 10.1-toting photography fans are in for a treat: the latest version of the modified Android OS now packs anHDR mode, which was in development for three months, within its stock camera app. When a user snaps a photo with the function, a total of three pictures (one at minimal, neutral and maximum exposures) are taken and combined into a single HDR image with the help of an algorithm. Differences in shutter speed, sensors and optics means quality will vary across smartphones, but the CyanogenMod team says that mid- to high-end devices outfitted with decent imaging hardware -- especially those with zero shutter lag -- should perform admirably. Of course, the group also recommends using a stand or tripod to thwart movement and vibration from fouling
up photos. Android Central points out that a few handset builds haven't received the update, so a handful of CyanogenMod-wielding photogs will still have to get their HDR fix elsewhere.

Nvidia brings the fight to Qualcomm's Snapdragon
[h=3]NVIDIA[/h]nvidia.co.uk
Nvidia has announced the Tegra 4i, the company's first integrated 4G LTE mobile processor. While the Tegra 3 processor found success in Android tablets, the lack of LTE prevented hardware manufacturers from using it in smartphones. With the Tegra 4i, Nvidia can compete with Qualcomm's Snapdragon processor series.
The Tegra 4i is based on ARM's R4 Cortex-A9 CPU combined with Nvidia's i500 LTE modem. The company also revealed its Phoenix reference platform for Tegra 4i-based mobile devices.
"Nvidia is delivering for the first time a single, integrated processor that powers all the major functions of a smartphone," said Phil Carmack, senior vice president of the Mobile business at Nvidia. "Tegra 4i phones will provide amazing computing power, world-class phone capabilities, and exceptionally long battery life."
"Tegra 4i is the very latest SoC solution based on the ARM Cortex-A9 processor and demonstrates the ability of ARM and our partners to continue to push the performance of technology and create exciting user experiences," says Tom Cronk, executive vice president and general manager, processor division, ARM.
"ARM and NVIDIA worked closely to further optimize the Cortex-A9 processor to drive performance and efficiency in areas such as streaming and responsiveness. This is an example of the collaboration and innovation that enables ARM technology-based solutions to be market drivers through multiple generations of SoC solutions."
The Tegra 4i mobile processor will be shown at the 2013 Mobile World Congress in Barcelona, Spain, on February 25 to 28.
