Microsoft just announced today's release of the Windows Phone 7.8 SDK, which should be a wee bit helpful for developers wanting to test their apps and Live Tiles with the revised OS. The new SDK includes two software images (build 8858), one that simulates devices with 512MB of RAM and another for 256MB handsets. The primary purpose of this release is to let developers test their Live Tiles with Windows Phone 7.8, which supports resizable Live Tiles. While it's not much of a surprise, the new SDK includes no new APIs over the Windows Phone 7.5 SDK, which further reinforces the impression of Windows Phone 7.8 as a largely cosmetic update. On the plus side, legacy support is alive and kicking, as Microsoft promises the SDK update won't alter existing Windows Phone 7.1 emulator images. For more details of this release, be sure to hit up the source link.

Nokia Drive+ is still in beta but, starting today, more people can take part in the navigational fun. The app has been freed from its Lumia exclusive bonds and is now available in the US, Canada and the UK on any Windows Phone 8 device. The download is free, but it's important to keep in mind that this is still a beta product -- so we can't make any guarantees about stability or compatibility. Still, the turn-by-turn navigation and offline maps are likely a huge improvement over whatever carrier-branded substitute you've been saddled with until now. Hit up the source for a few more details and to dig up a download link.

Last time Apple bragged about the number of iOS devices it's sold, the number was 400 million. On the company earnings call today, however, Tim Cook revealed that the number of iPhones, iPads and iPods sold has surpassed the half a billion mark. To be clear, that's over 500,000,000 devices, and it means that Apple's moved a hundred million devices total since June 2012. Of those, 75 million were moved in this quarter alone. Not bad, eh?

This cheap and easy hack will let you . [Xobmo] built the connector for just 55 cents. Apart from our concerns about scratching the lens when inserting the phone in the bracket we love the idea.
He was given the Celestron Powerseeker 70AZ as a gift from his wife last Christmas. He looked around the Internet and saw that there are already some solutions for recording video using an iPhone 3GS. This design on Thingiverse would be perfect, but he doesn’t have access to a 3D printer and ordering it form a service would cost almost $50. But when he got to thinking about it, all he needed was a ring to fit on the telescope and a way to connected the iPhone to it. He headed down to the hardware store and picked up a PVC coupler. After working with a hack saw and drill he ended up with a slot with two wings on it. Just slip the phone in and slide the ring on the eyepiece. You can see some action shots, and get a look at the mount itself, in the clip after the break.

More than 435,000 apps are set to hit the App Store in 2013, but will anyone notice them? Based on new research from mobile marketing firm Surikate and GfK, probably not. The report says that 52.2 million visits are made to the App Store every week, yet 81 per cent of UK visitors fail to browse past the 50 first apps.
Despite being mobile, 86 per cent of users search for new apps while at home, with just 23 per cent browsing on the move, though 22 per cent also browse at work. Meanwhile, 11 per cent of iPhone users search for apps while perched on the loo.
In terms of app discovery, 82 per cent of iPhone users usually browse the top 25 on the App Store. Beyond that, two-thirds of users have found apps via recommendations from friends and family, showing the genuine importance of producing a word-of-mouth-worthy title.
Apps must have a strong presence to secure loyalty among users, with 85 per cent of App Store visitors desiring strong reviews, images, and a reasonable price before they're persuaded to download.
Jules Minvielle, Surikate’s founder and CEO, said: "Our research shows that getting an app ranked among the Top 25 or higher in the App Store Charts is crucial, as just over half of iPhone users (57 per cent) will not browse beyond the first 25 applications."
Key stats:
* 6: is the average number of times a user accesses the App Store every week
* 6 to 9 pm: is the peak time for visitors on the App Store
* Top 25: is the place to be if you want your app to be discovered
* 75% of iPhone users claim they download apps they did not previously know about having discovered them in the Top 25 / Top Charts
* 11.5 minutes: average length of a user’s visit
* 30 or less: the number of apps an average user has on their phone (excluding those pre-installed on their iPhone)

Mobile platform engineer Chris Lord has revealed that Mozilla is working on a version of its Firefox browser for the Ouya Android gaming console.
Lord tweeted a screenshot of the browser running on Ouya, saying: “#Firefox on #Ouya – kinda unusable atm.”
The engineer elaborated on this when speaking to OuyaForum.com, commenting: “It already works and we have some preliminary patches for gamepad support, but there’s still quite a bit of work to be done to make it really usable.”
Ouya is an android-based gaming system that plugs into a television set, enabling the user to play Android games and apps.
The gaming console runs on a Tegra 3 quad-core processor and is set to launch in April.

Despite all the nightly builds of CyanogenMod 10.1, there hasn't been much of anything definitive to hang our hats on. There's at last some sense of reliability now that Milestone 1 versions have hit the servers. Most Nexus devices, as well as swaths of Samsung's Galaxy S and Galaxy Tab 2 ranges, can get the unofficial Android 4.2 build for themselves. The M1 code is deemed "mostly stable" and good enough for daily use, although that's relative -- it's not yet to the level of a fully stable build, let alone factory firmware. If you only needed fewer risks than before, though, the downloads and details await at the source links.

An unofficial, but fully functional release of XBMC should make the uber-popular media center software work with almost all Android devices. About six months ago the developers of XBMC announced that it had been ported for Android. That was true, but there was one caveat. The port was made functional on one specific Android device. The hardware company Pivos paid for the devs to add support for their Xios DS device. Although that build could be run on other Android devices, the hardware video acceleration could only be use if it was the same as the Xios. When not using the hardware acceleration many common video formats would only play at a few frames per second, if at all.
This build is a workaround and is not officially supported. What it brings to the table is the ability to use an external media player with XBMC. This way any video format which your Android device is capable of playing (with hardware acceleration) can be launched from XBMC but will be played by the native video application. We haven’t tried it for ourselves. If you have we’d love to hear about your experience in the comments.

For quite some time Mozilla has been working on Firefox OS, a lightweight mobile OS built in HTML5. Now it's whipped the curtain back from the first developer preview phones. The developer preview phones are unlocked, requiring the user insert their own SIM card. If those specs seem a little underpowered compared to other smartphones on the market, it's because Firefox OS is intended for lower-end smartphones; target markets include developing countries such as Brazil and China. (The first developer preview phones will be available in February.) The Firefox OS (once known as 'Boot to Gecko') is based on a handful of open APIs. The actual interface is highly reminiscent of Google Android and Apple iOS, with grids of icons linked to applications."The specs really aren't that bad; reader sfcrazy points out that they include the usual features baked into medium- and high-end phones these days: Wifi N, light and proximity sensors, and an accelerometer (though no mention of NFC).

Pocket Edition downloaded 7.3m times on iOS and Android
The Minecraft craze shows little signs of slowing as total sales for the title have now surpassed 20 million.
Revealing the news on Twitter, Mojang developer Jens Bergensten said that the PC version of the world-building title alone had sold nine million copies.
Sales of Minecraft Pocket Edition for Android and iOS meanwhile have risen to 7.3m, having been downloaded 5,899,727 since it was released.
This means that since the start of January, the game has been downloaded around 1.4 million times.
Mojang recently also revealed impressive 2012 sales of 15 million, selling 1.2 during the Christmas week alone.

2012 saw 359,764 new apps released into the App Store.
2013 can expect to see more than 435,000 new apps reach Apple’s App Store, mobile analytics and ad verification firm adeven has predicted.
Figures made available via adeven’s free online tool – apptrace.com – revealed that 559,764 new apps were released into the App Store last year, with November boasting the biggest number of new releases (39,313) and July being the slowest with just 22,483.
Elsewhere, adeven’s review of 2012 revealed that pricey apps in the region of $999 doubled, with 16 of the currently available 38 hitting the market last year.
Meanwhile, ‘zombie apps’ were also on the rise last year, particularly in December, with 64 per cent of apps not securing a ranking for most of the month. This represents a significant rise on June’s 60 per cent, indicating a growing competitive element in the App Store for an app to rank and be noticed.
Via apptrace’s sentiment analysis, Work Seek HD by Idealix was crowned as the all time most addictive app, with a rating of 54.5 per cent across all versions and a current version rating of 46 per cent.
The most positively reviewed app was Zulily by Zulily, which won with a positive rating of 85.6 per cent across all versions, with a current version rating of 90 per cent.
“We reviewed App Store results over the past five years and noticed a steady linear increase in the number of App Store apps, indicating that there will be over 435,000 new apps in the App Store by the end of 2013,” said Christian Henschel, CEO, adeven. “Naturally anything could happen to the industry, but we think these numbers are a fair prediction and an indication of the continued growth in the industry.”

The Windows Phone 8 operating system has shown encouraging signs of growth over the past 12 months, having trebled its market share in the UK.
Sales of Nokia and HTC devices have played a significant role in boosting the uptake for Windows Phone 8. HTC’s 8S and 8X smartphones have proved to be particularly popular, with initial supplies unable to meet demand.
However, the Windows phone 8 OS still runs on just 5.9 per cent of smartphones in the UK, according to figures from Kantar Worldpanel ComTech.
The crown for the UK’s most popular operating system continues to sit with Android, with 54.4 per cent market share, while Apple comes in at second with 32.4 per cent market share.
Dominic Sunnebo, global consumer insight director at Kantar, said: :Among the handset manufacturers, Samsung has held onto the number one spot in Britain, claiming 35% of smartphone sales, although Apple is now biting at its heels with 32%. Nokia is experiencing something of a turnaround in Britain with its smartphone share at 6.2% and actual sales growing by over 50% compared with last year. Meanwhile, BlackBerry continues to find trading tough in the run up to the BlackBerry 10 release; however, its 9320 handset gave it a boost over Christmas with two-thirds bought as gifts.”

Samsung could be set to unveil a new eight-inch version of its Galaxy Note tablet at next month’s MWC 2013 in Barcelona.
Mobile Magazine reported that Samsung’s IT and mobile communications chief JK Shin confirmed the mid-sized device in an interview with Korean publication iNews24.
The tablet, which is likely to include Samsung’s S Pen stylus, would go head to head in the market with Apple’s 7.9-inch iPad Mini.
However, while the latest version of the Galaxy Note looks certain to make an appearance at MWC 2013, the Korean manufacturer is set to forgo the Barcelona show for the release of its Galaxy S IV, which is rumoured to be launched on March 4th.

After announcing its flagship Xperia Z smartphone at CES, Sony has unveiled a new tablet sharing some of the features of its smaller counterpart.
Sony’s new super-slim, 6.9mm thick tablet is both waterproof and dust-proof, just like the smartphone, and shares the same design scheme as well.
The Sony Xperia Z tablet has a 10.1-inch 1920 x 1200 screen, Android 4.1, Qualcomm 1.5GHz quad-core APQ8064 processor, 2GB RAM and 32GB of storage.
Supporting both NFC and LTE, the tablet comes with an 8.1MP Exmor R camera with (according to Sony) the first ever backside illuminated sensor to be put in a tablet.
At 6.9mm thick and weight just 945g, the Xperia Z seems to be the thinnest tablet made so far, beating the iPad mini by around 3mm.
