As usual, the bimonthly gap separating the release of Apple's latest devices has been filled with – that's right – leaked images of rumoured devices.
Let's get all of the buzzwords out of the way.
The latest images leaked to veteran Apple gossip site 9to5Macshowcase potential back plates for the heavily rumoured fifth-generation editions of both the iPad and iPad mini.
However, with most 'leaked' images, the legitimacy of the images is unclear. The only information known of the images is their origin from an accessory maker in China.

Analyst Context has revealed that RIM’s BlackBerry PlayBook tablet has outsold Apple’s latest iPad model in the UK’s IT distribution channel.
More than 802,000 tablets were sold in November and December, with Apple accounting for just a quarter of the market.
"Sub-£300 devices accounted for 76 per cent of shipments," said Context mobile guru Salman Chaudhry. "A year ago it was 43 per cent. There has been a complete shift in the channel.
"It's a price-driven market, but never was before. The quality of many tablets is as good as the iPad but half the price, and they have a decent software ecosystem too. It's come a long way in a year."
Context’s report says that RIM shifted 160,000 PlayBook’s in the last two months of 2012, with Apple’s fourth-gen iPad selling 113,000 units.
The Nexus 7 was in third place, selling 105,000 and following that was Samsung’s Galaxy Tab 2 10.1-inch device, which shifted 85,000 units.

Turns out the rumours were true, Apple has officially announced that it will release a 128GB version of the fourth-gen iPad with Retina Display.
The new 128GB tablet will come in both WiFi and WiFi + Cellular versions, and will be available from February 5th from Apple’s stores and online, as well as Apple authorised resellers.
Earlier this week, PCR reported that a code in the latest iOS 6.1 beta 5 referenced compatibility with 128GB iOS devices.
“With more than 120 million iPads sold, it’s clear that customers around the world love their iPads, and everyday they are finding more great reasons to work, learn and play on their iPads rather than their old PCs,” said Philip Schiller, Apple’s senior vice president of Worldwide Marketing.
“With twice the storage capacity and an unparalleled selection of over 300,000 native iPad apps, enterprises, educators and artists have even more reasons to use iPad for all their business and personal needs.”
Available in both Black and White, the new larger-capacity iPad will cost $799 for the WiFi version and $929 for the WiFi + Cellular model.

That’s right folks, Samsung has added another smartphone to its Galaxy range.
The Korean firm is calling the Galaxy Express a ‘value-driven’ 4G LTE smartphone ‘designed for the young social explorer'.
Boasting faster multimedia streaming and downloads, super-fast internet browsing and unique device-to-device sharing capabilities, the Express looks pretty much like the Galaxy S3.
With its 4.5-inch display, the new smartphone fits neatly in between the Galaxy S3 Mini (4-inches) and the regular 4.8-inch Galaxy S3.
Running on Android 4.1 Jelly Bean, the Express features a 5mp rear camera, a 1.3mp front camera, 8GB of user memory, 1GB RAM and a microSD slot offering up another 32GB of storage.
S Beam, Samsung Hub and Samsung AllShare Play all feature on the device, which will be available to purchase in the UK in the first half of 2013.

Still waiting for a 128GB iPad? One could come sooner than you think. According to 9to5Mac, Cupertino is preparing to add a new SKU to its fourth-generation tablet line up, slotting next to the existing 16GB, 32GB and 64GB configurations as a premium model. A source at a well known US retailer shared the devices' SKU information with the outlet, marked up with internal Apple terminology that described both WiFi-only and cellular-capable slates in black and white facades. The devices' description column features a lone adjective, too: ultimate.
9to5Mac couldn't confirm that the description meant a 128GB model was inbound, but the assumption seems reasonable enough -- developers are finding references to 128GB iOS devices in iOS 6.1 beta code, and icons for the size were found in iTunes 11. Moreover, "good," "better" and "best" have all been used to describe different iPad configurations in the past -- ultimate seems like the next logical step. Strong evidence, to be sure, but we'll hedge our bets until we see something official. Read on to see the leaked SKU information for yourself.

The AAA Foundation for Traffic Safety has presented some disconcerting figures that show 69 per cent of licensed American drivers admitting to mobile phone use while behind the wheel within the past month. Despite that, 89 per cent of drivers believe those combining mobile use with driving pose a threat to the personal safety.
There's good reason to be fearful, as the mobile users admit to engaging in other reckless behaviours too, with 65 per cent speeding, 44 per cent driving while drowsy, 53 per cent sending a text or email, and 29 per cent neglecting a seatbelt.
Comparatively, drivers that hadn't used a mobile on the move in the past month are less likely to report maniacal motoring, with 31 per cent speeding, 14 per cent driving drowsy, three per cent sending a text or email and 16 per cent drove without a safety belt.
Peter Kissinger, president and CEO of the AAA Foundation for Traffic Safety, said: "Ninety per cent of respondents believe that distracted driving is a somewhat or much bigger problem today than it was three years ago, yet they themselves continue to engage in the same activities.
"More work clearly is needed to educate motorists on the risks associated with using a cell phone while driving, especially given that most Americans believe this problem is becoming worse."
Although 95 per cent of respondents claim to disapprove of texting and emailing, 27 per cent admit to having done so in the past 30 days, spiking to 61 per cent for 16-24 year-olds.

RIM reveals a bundle of huge media partners including 20th Century Fox, Disney, Paramount, National Geographic and Sony Music.
Following a string of setbacks, there's now just two more sleeps until RIM reveals its new BlackBerry 10 operating system.
Seemingly unable to wait another 48 hours, the Canadian OEM has released big news that BlackBerry World for BlackBerry 10 will come supercharged with music and video content via a number of major partnerships with studios and broadcasters.
This will bring the BlackBerry app store much closer to market leaders Google Play and Apple's App Store, which both offer a variety of movies and songs for rent and purchase. In fact, RIM is so confident, it claims the platform will offer 'one of the most robust music and video catalogues in mobile today'.
A number of payment options will be made available on the service, while films will be made available on the service on the same day they're released on DVD.
Frank Boulben, chief marketing officer at RIM, said: "Music and video content is an integral part of a rich mobile experience. People want easy and convenient access to their favourite music, movies and TV shows wherever they are.
"RIM is committed to working with content providers to bring the best, most up-to-date content to our customers with BlackBerry 10, and to make it easy for them to get what they want."
Initially, video downloads and rentals will be made available in the US, the UK, and Canada, while the music section will debut in 18 countries at launch. The announcement follows news that 15,000 BB10 apps were submitted by developers in less than two days.

French tech blog NoWhereElse.fr claims to have pictures showing components for the iPhone 5S and the iPhone 6.
The blog says the photos come from a source connected to an Apple supplier and depict the loud speaker modules that will be used in the two new iPhones.
Believing that Apple will deviate from its usual release schedule,NoWhereElse.fr says there could be as many as three iPhones unveiled during 2013.
Apparently Apple is going to enter the ‘phablet’ market with a new iPhone model rumoured to be called either the iPhone Math or iPhone +. This sounds a bit ridiculous and not really in keeping with Apple at all, but then again, that’s what I said about the iPad mini…
Back to the leaked images, although fuzzy, they appear to show a similar module design to one ones used in the iPhone 5. Both appear to be smaller, with the iPhone 6 module the smallest. So could there be some super-thin iPhones on the way this autumn.

Another report from Apple regarding Chinese labor practices surfaces. After conducting its 2011 audits to 339 sites, the company found that cases of underage labor had jumped from 6 to 74 in one year. It was concentrated in a single circuit board manufacturer, which Apple says was willfully conspiring with families to forge age-verification documents. According to a new report, Apple didn't find any cases of underage workers at its final assembly suppliers in 2012, but it plans to continue going deeper into the supply chain to ferret out violators. We are talking about Guangdong Real Faith Pingzhou Electronics Co., with which Apple has now terminated its relationship.

An iPhone case with a built-in cup holder? The designers were looking for $25,000 to make it on the crowdsourcing site Indiegogo. One look at the contraption should have been enough to convince anyone that the thing was a joke, or a publicity stunt, but a number of mainstream press outlets (LA Times, UPI) and bloggers took the bait with little or no realization that that they might be on the wrong end of the hook. Today the Dutch marketing firm behind the effort acknowledged that it was 'a joke.'

Tech site 9to5Mac has quoted an anonymous source at a US retailer, who has stated that the rumoured model, known as "premium SKU" and "Ultimate" will be offered alongside the range of iPad models currently available.
At present, the largest capacity iPad available offers 64GB of storage space, but as users increasingly store more of their favourite media on the devices, the firm has identified the need for a higher capacity device.

Data compiled by research firm Strategy Analytics revealed Samsung's success as it eclipsed its closest rival Apple, which sold just 135.8 million devices, whilst still managing to grow its own phone shipments by 46 per cent.
It follows the news that Samsung products were found to be the most recommended devices by UK retailers, as revealed by Informa Telecoms and Media.
A survey conducted by the firm over the Christmas period found that retailers in the UK recommended Samsung more than any other brand, with Apple lagging behind in second place.
The most recommended smartphones were found to be the Samsung Galaxy S3 and Galaxy Note 2.
In light of Samsung's ascent to the leading phone provider, Nokia suffered another setback as its own shipments fell by 20 per cent to 335.6 million handsets worldwide.
Overall, the total shipments within the mobile phone market grew by 2 per cent, as a total of 1.6 billion devices were sold in 2012.
Neil Shah, senior analyst at Strategy Analytics, told the BBC: "Fuelled by robust demand for its popular Galaxy models, Samsung was the star performer, shipping a record 396.5 million mobile phones worldwide and capturing 25 per cent market share to solidify its first-place lead."

While RIM throws checks at developers, and Steve Ballmerinvades other people's press conferences to shout about apps, the folks behind the Ubuntu smartphone project are taking a very different tack. According to Richard Collins, product manager at Canonical, the first device -- expected by early next year -- will target basic users and only run pre-installed software:"In terms of our first go-to-market product strategy, the intention is not to have an application store full of ready-made applications that are there to download. We have a very definite approach in terms of addressing a very important part of the market where users are primarily interested in being able to use a core set of applications."
Let's be clear, though: this entry-level phone will be capable of accessing a storefront for third-party apps at some point in the future. A huge part of Canonical's long-term plan is to capitalize on its relationships with developers and the fact that existing Ubuntu desktop apps should be relatively easy to port to the new breed of phones and tablets. It's just that this isn't going to be the priority to begin with. Check out our full interview with Richard Collins for more.

Apple is on the ropes as customers flock from iOS to Android, right? Perhaps not.
The tech company last night reported record Q1 sales of 47.8m iPhones and 22.9m iPads. That’s up on last year’s sales of 37m and 15.4m respectively. That works out as over 800,000 iOS device sales per day.
Profit for the period hit a mind-boggling $13.1bn which is flat, although note that its Q1 last year contained an extra week. Revenue was up year-on-year from $46.3bn to $54.5bn.
As well as quashing rumours of slowing sales of iOS devices, Apple CEO Tim Cook also shot down talk of an imminent reveal for a large-screen iPhone, affirming: "Without sacrificing the one-handed ease of use, we've put a lot of thought into screen size, and we believe we've picked the right one."
Meanwhile, a bit of number-crunching from Business Insider suggests that the iPad Mini is eating into sales of the regular iPad. The average iPad selling price has for the first time dipped below $499 – the entry-price for full-sized iPads.
Cook admitted to investors that there has been “some cannibalization” between the pair, but insisted that the lion’s share of cannibalisation is tablets stealing from Macs and PCs.

Now that unlocking a new phone is under many circumstances illegal in the U.S. (!), Digital Trends has collected a useful set of answers outlining just what that means. As they put it, "quick guide to answer all your why, how, and WTF questions." Among them, some explanation of the rule-making process, the reasoning that led to the end to the unlocking exception to the DMCA (including the Ninth Circuit's 2010 Vernor v. Autodesk decision), and illustrations of situations in which it is not illegal to unlock your phone.

Well known iOS security researcher Pod2g has confirmed that a working untethered iOS 6 jailbreak is ready and would be released as soon as iOS 6.1 GM is released. In an interview with iDigitalTimes, the security researcher has revealed that they are already in possession of a functional untethered iOS 6 and iOS 6.1 beta 4 jailbreak and majority of the work has been done by @planetbeing and @pimskeks. "6.0 is jailbroken, 6.1 beta 4 also. Now we are waiting 6.1 to confirm and release," said the researcher. He said that the jailbreak would have been possible without him as he came into the iOS 6 jailbreak scene at a later stage and provided pointers that pushed the other researchers to the maximum.
