Ten day competition to be judged by Phil Fish, Ed Fries, Adam Saltsman, Zach Gage, Felicia Day and others
Supporters of the Ouya console have contributed $45,000 in prizes to be awarded in the upcoming CREATE game jam.
The ten-day competition will challenge developers who backed the Ouya Kickstarter campaign to build an original game, which will then be submitted to Kill Screen for review.
The panel of judges includes Phil Fish, Adam Saltsman, Zach Gage, Ed Fries, Felicia Day, and others.
An interesting feature of the competition is that games will be judged in part by the social media support they drum up.
This is obviously of huge benefit to Ouya, which will get a great deal of free advertising, and one more potential hit for every submitted prototype that turns into a full game.

After unveiling its Tegra 4 powered handheld on stage at CES yesterday, the hardware firm has announced the device won't be sold at a loss.
The firm took to its company blog in order to address discussion surrounding the device's yet to be announced price point and how it plans to differ itself from traditional consoles.
Previously, most handheld games devices have entered the market selling for a loss, as firms initially attract gamers and move to secure steady income from them through future titles and games releases.
With this in mind, it's difficult to imagine NVIDIA following this business model with Project Shield, given its business as a hardware manufacturer.
However, the firm used its blog to highlight how the likes of Nintendo and Sony do business, and how it would differ from this with its hardware.
"We'll make our money by selling the device to gamers," the post reads.
"This time-honoured approach isn't one we're taking with Project Shield... our goal with it is to design and sell a truly great piece of hardware, one that fits comfortably in your hand, delights your eyes and blows out your ears."

Supply-chain sources reveal Apple is set to roll out a budget version of the iPhone.
Digitimes reports that sources close to the matter have seen samples of the low-cost iPhone, saying it will have a brand new exterior design and a 5-inch screen.
The budget iPhone is said to be initially aimed at China and other emerging markets, apparently this reason Apple will target China is because a large number of 5-inch displays are sold there.
Digitimes also reports that other sources claim the recent release of Qualcomm’s Snapdragon chipsets will pave the way for Apple to bring out a budget smartphone. The new handsets are apparently intended to release in the second half of 2013.
It seems out of character for Apple to release a budget version of anything, but then again, and while I would be very surprised if Apple decided to release an iPhone with a larger screen, yet charge less for it, there have a been a number of analysts predicting that an ‘iPhone mini’ will be entering the smartphone market in the next few years.
"The iPhone 5 is growing fast and profitably right now, so there is little incentive for Apple to launch an 'iPhone Mini' this year. We expect the iPhone Mini to be more likely next year, in 2014 when Apple will be forced to discover fresh growth streams," commented Neil Mawston, executive director at Strategy Analytics.
"For Apple to be effective in this segment it needs to come to market soon with a Mini or other similar type product," suggested Foad Fadaghi, research director at Telsyte.

Adding further evidence to the theory that 2013 is the year of Android gaming devices, PowerA has revealed a new version of the Moga Android controller. Cleverly titled the Moga Pro, the device is a full-size Bluetooth controller styled in the same fashion as an Xbox 360 pad. The unit features two analog sticks, a D-pad, four face buttons, two shoulder buttons and two triggers.
Just like its smaller predecessor, the Moga Pro features an integrated folding grip that secures Android phones (up to 3.2 inches wide) directly to the controller. The controller also comes with a stand for larger phones and tablets. The Moga Pivot App, meanwhile, helps players find and download compatible Android games from Google Play.
The Moga Pro will launch this spring, and our friends at Engadget should go hands-on with device this week at CES.

Videogame hardware manufacturer, Nvidia, have announced their own portable console, tentatively named “Project Shield” at the Consumer Electronics Show, which kicked off in Las Vegas this week.
Project Shield looks kind of like an Xbox controller with a 5” screen attached to it, and it runs on the Android OS. It includes two analog sticks, has a Micro-SD card slot for memory, and an HDMI port for video output. Nvidia say the device is powered by their Tegra 4 processor and will provide 5-10 hours of gaming time on a single charge.
In addition to running its own games, Project Shield will also be able to stream games running on a PC, according to a separate report by the Wall Street Journal. Streaming will reportedly be enabled by a variant of Wi-Fi technology.
Nvidia have not yet announced a release date or price for Project Shield, or details regarding software support.

Pate the coder of the x86 Emulator for Nintendo DS has started his new project which is the first x86 Emulator for Android:
Since my previous DSx86 blog post at dsx86.patrickaalto.com, I have begun working on ax86. I have been on a two-week Xmas vacation which is just ending, and I have been able to work on ax86 several hours per day during my vacation. It has progressed quite nicely, although there is still a huge amount of work remaining, so do not expect a public release version for a while yet. :-)
I spent the first couple of days of my vacation simply getting a "Hello, World" -style Android application running. Even this first "Hello world" application did however already contain my 386 emulation sources from Raiden Legacy, but the problem was that I did not know how best to interface to them from Java. I am reasonably familiar with Java, but not with the Android specialities, so I began searching for tutorials on the net. I found a blog post by Richard Quirk, which seemed to be exactly what I was after. He also moved on to Android programming after coding for Nintendo DS, so it was easy to follow and understand his code and techniques. On the 26th of December I got my "Hello world" application (which was mostly based on his example code) working on my Asus Nexus 7 Android tablet, so I was in business!
The next couple of days were spent studying the example code and figuring out ways to add my own code to it, porting the BIOS and DOS emulation stuff (which had not been needed in Raiden Legacy) from Nintendo DS to Android, and such. I also needed to code the text screen blitting code, so that it converts the PC text mode screen character buffer to RGB565 format used by the Android OpenGL system. Then finally on the 29th of December I got 4DOS.COM starting up in Android!

utunnels a coder over at LavaLit has ported the Beats of Rage game over to the Android OS. Heres what the coder posted:
I've ported OpenBOR to android last week.
This actually my first android app (besides hello word), so perhaps I need more time to figure out how to optimize it and how to apply proper control logic.
Current progress: it works, better if you have a joystick and map the keys to default pc control layout (that is a=attack, d=jump, f=special, etc). On my LG-p705 it runs at around 25-30fps under 32bit mode, for some reason, it's much slower under 16bit mode.

PPSSPP is using the GCCE version 4.6.3 for builds, and I wanted to see if there’s anything that I could do to help, so I ended up setting up the development environment. Here’s short instructions how you can configure the GCCE 4.6.3 for Nokia QT SDK.

As neat as the Kindle Fire HD already is, just a few dinky tweaks could turn it into so much more -- a platform for true physics-based gaming, for example, or even for surprisingly fast photo manipulation. How come? Because both the 8.9-inch and 7-inch versions of the Android-based slate come with a graphics engine that can handle OpenCL acceleration. It certainly won't work out of the box, but Amazon has been working quietly with Imagination Technologies -- the folks behind the tablet's PowerVR GPU -- to try it out. The demo after the break is subtle, perhaps, but it's fluid, detailed and goes far beyond anything that a stock device can achieve. It also proves that, in certain circumstances, OpenCL has the power to boost frame rates by 50 percent while simultaneouslylowering power consumption by the same proportion. Read on for more.

[Lambgx02] got tired of his Android device getting bogged down and decided to dig down to the cause of the issue. His investigation led him to believe that entropy is causing the slowdown. He believes that his workaround reduces 90% of the lag on the average Android device.
So how is it possible that entropy is causing the problem? It seems there is a bottleneck when an app requests a random number from the Linux kernel running at the lowest level of the device. Android is set up to use /dev/random for all random number requests, but [Lambgx02] says that location has a very shallow pool of numbers available. When they run out the kernel has to reload with a new seed and this is blocking the app that requested the data from continuing.
His solution was to write his own app that seeds /dev/random once every second using a number from /dev/urandom. He mentions that this might cause a security vulnerability as seeding the random data in this way is not quite as random. There may also be issues with battery life, so make sure to monitor performance if you give it a try.

Android console newcomer GameStick is off to a flying start after hitting its Kickstarter funding target on just its second day.
The project was after $100,000 and currently sits on $142,000 with 27 days still to run.
The hardware is the brainchild of casual games firm PlayJam. It comes in the form of a joypad with a USB-like drive that can be removed from the underside and plugged directly into a TV’s HDMI slot.
“The response from the Kickstarter community has been truly overwhelming,” PlayJam CEO Anthony Johnson stated. “We are confident in our product and what we hope it will mean for gaming but we were taken aback at how quickly the message was adopted.
“There is no better feeling than having hundreds if not thousands of people endorse your idea.
“While we are shipping as a dedicated games console, we are keen to ensure that users have the ability to hack the device if they so wish and will be providing support for XBMC & DNLA via an optional firmware update in September. We encourage users to hack the device – the time for closed, proprietary systems is ending which bodes well for true innovation.”
While its design is unique, GameStick is of course not the first Android console to call for funding – the machine’s most notable rival being the crowd-funded Ouya. But UK firm PlayJam is confident GameStick can hold its own.
PlayJam already works with a network of over 250 developers to bring games to Smart TVs, including Disney, Relentless and First Star Software.

The new terms for the Android SDK now include phrases such as 'you may not: (a) copy (except for backup purposes), modify, adapt, redistribute, decompile, reverse engineer, disassemble, or create derivative works of the SDK or any part of the SDK' among other non-Free-software-friendly terms, as noted by FSF Europe's Torsten Grote. Replicant, a free fork of Android, announced the release of Replicant SDK 4.0 based on the latest sources of the Android SDK without the new terms

New hacks surface, while Hunted Cow shuts down its pirated game after one week
Newly emerged hacks that make iPhone piracy more straightforward threaten to make life harder for game developers on the platform.
Zeusmos and Kuaiyong are two newly launched services that allow one-tap, instant installs of pirated apps on any iOS device, TNW reports.
No jailbreak is required for these apps to work, which makes them a significant threat to Apple and its development community.
The unnamed 15-year-old creator of Zeusmos claimed it’s just a way to enable homebrew apps without having to buy an annual Apple developer licence, but doesn’t acknowledge that what it does is enable piracy.
Zeusmos and Kuaiyong could make game piracy more accessible, which would be especially dangerous for developers who solely create titles for iOS devices.
