The Internet is awash with rumours today that Korean handset manufacturer Samsung is set to bypass MWC (Mobile World Congress) and launch its Galaxy S IV smartphone on March 4th.
An allegedly leaked image has surfaced on SamMobile.com of an invite to Samsung Mobile Unpacked 2013 from one of its Korean members. It also says that the Galaxy S IV will be introduced in Pyeongchang, South Korea.
The website also claimed that it had been given a tip-off from a Samsung insider, stating that the Galaxy S IV will feature a 2GHz quad-core processor and run Android’s 4.2 OS. Furthermore, the source suggests that it will come with a 4.99-inch Super AMOLED HD touchscreen, 13-megapixel rear camera and two-megapixel front camera.
While the reports are thus far unconfirmed, they do echo last year’s launch of the Galaxy S III, which saw the firm snub MWC in favour of launching the device at its own event on May 3rd 2012

Whilst rival firms continue to showcase an array of budget smartphones at this year's CES event, Apple has dismissed claims it is working on an entry-level iPhone.
Earlier rumours suggested that Apple was developing a cheaper version of its flagship handset in order to cut into the budget market as it worked to increase its presence within the Chinese market.
However, the firm's senior Vice President of worldwide marketing, Phil Schiller, has dispelled such rumours, stating that Apple is not working on a new budget device.
Schiller confirmed to Chinese publication Shanghai Evening Newsthat a budget iPhone is not part of Apple's immediate plans, moving on to state that market share is not the company's primary concern.
Whilst it may not be Apple's primary concern, it's no doubt a major concern for the firm, which now holds a 21 per cent share of global smartphone shipments, lacking behind its closest rival Samsung, which continues to sit pretty with its 33 per cent share.
Schiller emphasised that rather than producing a number of different versions of its highest-selling product in order to gain market share, Apple remains focused on producing the best quality product it can, which the VP believes the latest iPhone 5 to be.

RIM has announced that it will release six new handsets over the next 12 months, in a bid to cover all areas of the mobile market.
With the BlackBerry 10 launch now just a number of weeks away, the handsets will all run on the new operating system.
Details of the devices are expected to be announced in full at the BlackBerry 10 press conference on January 30th, but for now it’s safe to say the range will cover low, medium and high-end mobile options.
Rumours surfacing on the Internet have suggested that one of the devices will be labelled as the Z10, featuring a full touch screen, while unconfirmed reports also tell of a device branded as the X10, featuring BlackBerry’s QWERTY keyboard.
The new devices will be the first that BlackBerry has brought to the market since the Curve 9320 in May 2012.

The year is barely a week old, and yet already something momentous has happened. While many of us are expecting it to be the year when Microsoft and Sony bring out new machines and try to get their platform stories moving toward perihelion, it seems that other companies were thinking differently. We already knew about the Ouya, of course, and the rumours about Valve making a dedicated machine for Steam have been circulating for a while.

New chips to be fitted in future high-end smartphones and tablets.
Samsung president Dr Stephen Woo delivered a keynote at CES yesterday, explaining how central mobile is to the tech industry and how processors and memory developments are integral to enhancing devices.
This opened the door for him to unmask the firm's new Exynos 5 Octa eight-core processor. The joint venture from Samsung and ARM is made up of two quad-core chips and will be fitted in new 'high-end' smartphones and tablets.
Woo, said: "Our industry’s centre of gravity is mobile devices and it is the components that are driving this; it’s deep inside the devices where the magic happens."
The Octa will, of course, increase processing power, but use of ARM's big/little tech, which automatically switches between chips based on the task being performed, will conserve battery life.
Meanwhile, Samsung's existing Exynos 5 processor is currently used in 53m devices.

Handset manufacturer boasts of strong sales for its Lumia and Asha smartphones.
Nokia has revealed that its Q4 mobile sales have “exceeded expectations” as a result of strong sales of its Lumia and Asha smartphone lines.
The company announced that sales of its Lumia series almost doubled during the last quarter to 4.4 million units, whilst also noting that its operating expenses have dropped during the same period. These factors are expected to see the company’s operating margins arrive between breaking even and positive two per cent, representing a significant improvement on previous quarters, whereby it warned the market that it would not be able to meet initial forecasts. Nokia had originally estimated that its operating margin for Q4 would be in the region of negative six per cent.
Nokia also stated that its Nokia Siemens Networks performed better than expected in Q4. And, while it didn’t release revenue figures for the division, the company claimed that the “strong” performance of higher margin product categories was one of the key driving forces behind the Q4 improvement.
“We are pleased that Q4 2012 was a solid quarter where we exceeded expectations and delivered underlying profitability in Devices & Services and record underlying profitability in Nokia Siemens Networks,” said CEO Stephen Elop in a statement. “We focused on our priorities and as a result we sold a total of 14 million Asha smartphones and Lumia smartphones while managing our costs efficiently, and Nokia Siemens Networks delivered yet another very good quarter.”
With regards to its Q4 net sales, Nokia estimates that its devices and services division was at €3.9 billion ($5.1 billion), with total device volumes of 86.3 million units. Its mobile phone sales accounted for €2.5 billion ($3.3 billion) of that, at 79.6 million units, of which 9.3 million were part of its budget Asha range.
Meanwhile, smartphones net sales hit €1.2 billion ($1.6 billion) with 6.6 million units sold, 4.4 million of there were from its Lumia range.
However, in spite of its successful Q4 performance, Q1 is expected to see Nokia’s operating margin drop to negative two per cent due to “competitive industry dynamics.” In other words, competition from the likes of Samsung and Apple.

Developers will now be limited on how often they're able to update screenshots for their products within the App Store as Apple cracks down on fake software and scams.
Apple has prohibited the ability to change app screenshots unless a relevant software update is released in conjunction with the images.
The App Store has long suffered from issues involving fraudulent software, with many users being scammed into downloading malicious content that, which has been disguised as a variety of the store's most popular titles.
Before the changes were introduced, app developers were able to change the screenshots for their products as often as they wished, provided that Apple had initially given the app its approval.
The new system is being introduced to limit the number of fake apps on the store and effectively reduce the number of its users mistakenly downloading malicious content to their device.
Within a statement detailing the changes, Apple said: "Beginning January 9, app screenshots will be locked in iTunes Connect once your app has been approved. New screenshots may be uploaded when you submit a binary for an update to an existing app or a new app."
Whilst limiting the number of scammers within the App Store, the changes are also likely to affect genuine developers looking to simply upload new screenshots of their product to their app's listing.

Announced today at CES 2013, Samsung has updated its Galaxy S II smartphone.
Running on Android 4.1.2 Jelly Bean, the smartphone features a 1.2GHz dual core processor, 4.3-inch WVGA AMOLED Plus display, 8MP rear camera and a 2MP front-facing camera.
While the specs seem pretty much the same as the Galaxy S II, the new smartphone does feature the ability to simultaneously play a video in a pop-up window while using another app. This function also features on the Galaxy S III as well as the Galaxy Note II. And apart from the updated OS, that seems to be pretty much it.
Oh, and if you live in the UK, don’t expect to get your hands on the Galaxy S II Plus any time soon as a spokeswoman has confirmed to ZDNet that the smartphone will not be available over here.

As the next generation of consoles looms, we've seen a growing trend towards low price, compact alternatives such as the Ouya and GameStick, many of which run on the Android mobile platform. But this article on the trend raises a very good point: through the use of cloud computing and game streaming technology, it's entirely possible these machines will be able to keep pace with the powerhouse technology inside the Sony PS4 and Microsoft Xbox 720, and perhaps even overtake them. After all, if these little boxes can simply stream from powerful servers, how can the stalwarts of gaming keep up?"

6.1-inch device is either the biggest smartphone yet or the most compact tablet.
Huawei appears to have broken some kind of record at CES 2012, as its new 6.1-inch Ascend Mate becomes either the most whopping smartphone or the most modest tablet to hit the market to date.
The new phablet is primed for use primarily as a smartphone, boasting a 1.5 GHz Hi-Silicon quad-core processor and a 4050 mAh battery. Furthermore, it features an eight-megapixel camera on its rear and a one-megapixel front-facing camera. It is also running Android’s Jelly Bean OS.
However, while size is seemingly the number one concern with the Ascend Mate, its screen resolution only comes in at more modest 1,280 x 720 pixels.
Commenting on the launch, Richard Yu, chief executive of consumer business at Huawei, said: “The Huawei Ascend Mate breaks barriers to deliver a supercharged entertainment, communication and creative experience for all your personal and professional needs.”
Huawei has announced that the Ascend Mate will only be available in China and will hit shelves in February.

Microsoft handset movements to rise from 30m in 2012 to 138m in 2016.
Portio Research has forecast more dark times for ailing RIM, with Microsoft set to ship more Windows Phone-powered smartphones than BlackBerry in 2014, while they will overtake Nokia's Symbian this year. Of course, the latter is perhaps unsurprising, given that Nokia has adopted WinPho for its flagship Lumia line.
WinPho smartphone shipments are estimated to have reached 30m last year, and are expected to hit 138m for 2016, which will see the OS in third place behind Android and iOS from 2014 onwards.
Android secured a 54 per cent share of Western European shipments by OS in 2012, rising slightly from 50 per cent, while iOS increased from 23 per cent to 24 per cent. Meanwhile, BlackBerry declined from 14 per cent to ten per cent year-on-year, as WinPho grew from one per cent to seven per cent.
When observing Eastern Europe, Android leads again to rise from 53 per cent in 2011 to 61 per cent in 2012, while Symbian fell significantly from 23 per cent to seven per cent.
iOS repeated the Western European performance in the East with a marginal climb from 12 to 13 per cent, though BlackBerry dropped from 11 to seven per cent as WinPho leapt from one to 11 per cent.
Huawei earlier debuted its first Windows Phone handset at CES, which boasts 20 days of standby time, whileRIM is set to release its BlackBerry 10 OS at the end of the month, something of a last stand against the competition.

Cupertino firm falls victim to rumour again, with low end device expected for late 2013.
The iPad Mini was once a product of conjecture, though soon became very real, with Apple launching the 7.9-inch tablet to appease consumers on a lower budget while competing with the likes of Amazon's Kindle Fire line.
Apple is now thought to be working on a low end iPhone, which is expected to be priced at between $99 to $149, according toBloomberg. Cheaper components like plastic are thought to be used in order to achieve the price cut, rather than costly metal and glass materials.
The move would see the firm branch away from its traditional $500+ handsets, while the entry-level device could be released in late 2013, which has become the usual time Apple chooses to launch new products.
The Cupertino firm has been accused of lacking innovation since the passing of Steve Jobs, but the company still sold 5m handsets in its debut weekend and shifted more than two million in the same period when the device hit China.
Meanwhile, the Apple App Store crossed 40bn downloads and 500m active user accounts this week, while paying iOS developers more than $7bn.

Flagship Grand S handset is the world's thinnest smartphone with a five-inch screen.
ZTE has become the latest handset manufacturer to introduce a new smartphone at CES 2013, with its new flagship 4G Grand S model debuting in Las Vegas.
Due to go on sale during the first quarter of 2013, the Grand S has only been confirmed for release in China.
The 4G handset, which runs Android Jelly Bean, boasts a five-inch screen and features a Qualcomm Snapdragon S4 Pro 1.7GHz quad-core processor. It also comes with a 13-megapixel camera and 2-megapixel front facing camera.
Meanwhile, at just 6.9mm thick, ZTE claims that the Grand S is the world's thinnest quad-core smartphone with a five-inch screen.
Kan Yulun, corporate vice president of ZTE and chief technical officer of its mobile device division, said: “The ZTE Grand S gives our customers the latest in technology, functionality and style. We understand that today’s consumers call for advanced features and state-of-the-art multimedia options in their handsets. The ZTE Grand S confidently addresses those demands. It is fitting that we can announce the world debut of the ZTE Grand S at CES 2013, the world’s largest annual innovation event.”
