The threat of mobile viruses could be set to increase significantly in 2013, Cambridge-based security firm Trend Micro has warned.
According to Trend Micro, the third quarter of 2012 saw malware targeting Android grow from approximately 30,000 âmaliciousâ applications to over 175,000.
One of the major concerns mooted by the security firm is the ability of viruses to put consumersâ finances at risk by accessing information from banking apps, while the risk to customersâ private data in general is also a serious issue.
Rik Ferguson, director of security research at Trend Micro, believes that the key problem facing mobile users in the UK is a lack of awareness, with many failing to fully address the threat posed to their device. âIn terms of mobile malware, what weâve seen in 2011 and 2012 is a period of experimentation,â he commented. âWe havenât seen a mobile malware âtool kitâ as weâve seen on PCs. But I think we will begin to see it on mobile.
âI think we will see the establishment of a leading kind of banking malware tool. And a leading kind of information theft toll, which will be commoditised and for sale on the underground market. Criminals will be adding plug-ins and additional functionality but the tool kit will be the root.â
Furthermore, Ferguson believes that âBlack Holeâ exploit kits â the biggest threat to computer security - are currently amassing data on mobile OSâ. âWe will soon see the first exploit kits capable of targeting mobile devices, where your phone can be infected just by accessing a web page,â he said. âWhen that happens it will be a game changer, as criminals break out of the need to go through the app store â Apple will be targeted.
âFunctionally, technologically, we have got what we need from a security point of view but the places where we need to see change and advancement is from smartphone operating system manufacturers, namely Google, Apple, Microsoft and RIM, they need to make sure they partner more closely with the security industry in general to make their operating system more securable.â

Supermarket giant trials shops within two of its superstores as part of 2013 mobile push.
In a bid to catapult itself to the top of the UK supermarket pile, Sainsburyâs has announced that it is trialling mobile phone shops in two of its superstores in conjunction with A1 Comms and 20:20 mobile.
Both shops, which are located at Sainsburyâs superstores in Kingâs Lynn and Letchworth, will sell pay as you phones, SIM-only deals and contract deals with EE, O2, Vodafone and Three, along with a range of mobile accessories.
Meanwhile, handsets available will include a selection of feature phones and smartphones from most major manufacturers, such as Samsung, HTC, Nokia, LG and Huawei. However, the iPhone will not be available as yet, although sources have suggested that it will be given the go ahead in the near future.
The new own-branded mobile shops, which will be staffed by trained Sainsburyâs staff, go someway to furthering the supermarketâs reputation as a brand continuing to embrace new technology, particularly in the mobile realm. Last year, Sainsburyâs began testing a new âMobile Scan & Goâ platform in three of its stores, as well as featuring Aurasma powered AR-enhanced content in its magazine.
A Sainsburyâs spokesman said: âWeâre always looking at ways to serve our customers better and we are trialling moving our mobile phone offering into a new dedicated location within our Letchworth and Kingâs Lynn stores.â

Strategy Analytics has predicted that Samsung will increase its lead of Apple by growing its smartphone sales by 35 per cent throughout 2013.
The analyst firm estimates Samsung will sell 290 million smartphones as worldwide smartphone sales increase by 27 per cent in 2013, reaching an impressive 875 million units.
"We expect Samsung to slightly extend its lead over Apple this year because of its larger multitier product portfolio," Neil Mawston, executive director at Strategy Analytics, told Reuters.
Appleâs smartphone sales are projected to reach 180 million this year. These figures suggest that Apple will hold 21 per cent of the smartphone market throughout 2013, while Samsung will hold 33 per cent.
Although there has been rumours of Apple releasing an iPhone mini in 2013, Mawston believes it will not happen this year: "The iPhone 5 is growing fast and profitably right now, so there is little incentive for Apple to launch an 'iPhone Mini' this year. We expect the iPhone Mini to be more likely next year, in 2014 when Apple will be forced to discover fresh growth streams."

December 2012 saw Amazonâs Kindle Fire almost double its web usage market share.
According to research conducted by Chitika, Kindle Fireâs share of traffic increased by around 7.5 per cent. Is it coincidence that the iPadâs share of tablet web traffic decline by just over seven per cent? Hmmm
Samsungâs Galaxy tablet saw its web traffic jump by more than a per cent, and even Microsoftâs Surface saw a boost. It was very slight, but a boost is a boost.
Despite all this shifting around, iPad is still crushing its opponents with nearly 79 per cent of the market. But even so, losing over seven per cent to its rival in one month will leave Apple a little concerned.
"We expect that the iPad's share of traffic will return to the 80 per cent range, albeit lower than pre-holiday levels, as users return from vacation and browse with their new devices less frequently," noted Chitika.
The last week of 2012 saw the most device activations and app downloads in a single day, with at least 17.4 million iOS and Android devices activated on Christmas Day.

Joe Danger Touch is set for release this month on iPhone and iPad, developer Hello Games has confirmed to CVG.
We've also taken exclusive screens from a near-final build which we obtained this morning, which can be found below.Joe Danger Touch has been made by just two men at Hello Games, and is the iOS-exclusive follow up to its duo of Joe Danger games on PSN and XBLA. It has been built from scratch for iOS and features new stages and characters - Hello Games' Sean Murray is keen to stress that it's not a port.
Players will be able to send their friends challenges through Game Center and players can also buy new characters via in-app purchases, though they are also unlockable simply by playing through the game.
"I don't think Joe Danger Touch feels like anything else I've played," Sean Murray told CVG. "I want it to feel like it could only work on iOS, because we've built it specifically for the device. Towards the end of the game, it gets super difficult, probably more so than the console version. I'm amazed what levels I can handle sometimes, and the subtlety possible with just a touch interface."
"Playtesters keep telling me it's a nice blend of their other favorite games on iPhone - Bike Baron, Jetpack Joyride and Rayman Jungle Run," he continued. "Usually that would really wind me up, but I kind of see it as a compliment here, that Joe Danger feels at home on iOS, and is being compared to some of the best games on the device."

There are plenty of ways to get Android on your TV -- from smartphone docks, to dongles and even the officially sanctioned Google TV. But most of them are missing something, be it a simple way to control them or access to the full Play store. Archos is aiming to solve those conundrums with its new TV Connect, an Android computer, complete with HD camera and a handheld remote with a pair pointer sticks used to simulate a multitouch screen. Under the hood is a 1.5GHz "multi core" CPU, 1GB of RAM and 8GB of expandable storage. For networking you can go old school and plug in an Ethernet line or lose the cables and rely on WiFi. The remote has more control options than you could possibly desire crammed in a form factor that's more than a little reminiscent of a certain failed Atari console. In addition to the pair of pointer sticks, there's a full QWERTY keypad, a directional pad, four game buttons, the standard Android keys and volume controls -- not to mention you can move an onscreen cursor simply by pointing the remote at your TV.
The strongest selling point of the TV Connect, however, is its unfettered access to the Google Play store. That means its vast repositories of music, movies and TV shows are available to you but, more importantly, so are the hundreds of thousands of apps like Netflix, Google Talk and Skype. The Jelly Bean running set top box will be hitting shelves in February for $130.

In a bit of delicious irony, Microsoft laments Google is not playing fair by excluding access to meta-data on YouTube, preventing the development of the kind of powerful app readily available on Android. From the article: 'In a blog post on Wednesday, Microsoft VP and deputy general counsel Dave Heiner said the software giant has spent two years trying to get a first-class YouTube app running on Windows Phone, but to no avail, thanks to the Chocolate Factory's stonewalling. "YouTube apps on the Android and Apple platforms were two of the most downloaded mobile applications in 2012, according to recent news reports," Heiner wrote. "Yet Google still refuses to allow Windows Phone users to have the same access to YouTube that Android and Apple customers enjoy.

Eighteen months ago, Nokia announced a smartphone unlike any other it has produced before. It was a proper smartphone, one that looked miles away from previous Nokia phones: it was sleek, modern and simple at the same time. The hardware was pretty modern, too; no underpowered processors with severely limited RAM issues to be seen here. And, it runs on an operating system that Nokia had announced dead months before the phone's announcement. This, ladies and gentlemen, is the Nokia N9.

Samsung has reportedly set a target of shipping 510 million handsets in 2013, representing a 20 per cent increase on its 2012 shipments.
Reports emerging from Korea say that Samsung is aiming to ship 390 million smartphones over the next 12 months, with the bulk belonging to the firmâs Galaxy range.
76 per cent of the 2013 target will be comprised of smartphones, while the remaining 24 per cent will be made up of feature phones, a Samsung supplier is thought to have told The Korean Times.
Furthermore, the reports suggests that Samsung is preparing to introduce a series of smartphones powered by the open source OS Tizen, with the company teaming up with Japanese mobile operator NTT Docomo to launch Tizen handsets in the country at some point in 2013.
In November 2012, Samsung revealed that its Galaxy S III smartphone had surpassed 30 million units just five months after its launch in May.

Flurry has reported that during the Christmas week from December 25th-31st, a record-breaking 1.76 billion Android and iOS apps were downloaded.
This figure beats last yearâs record week by more than half a billion downloads.
That wasnât the only record broken, the last week of 2012 also saw the most device activations and app downloads in a single day. Flurry estimates that at least 17.4 million iOS and Android devices were activated on Christmas Day, while 328 million apps were downloaded from both mobile platforms.
When the figures are broken down by country the results reveal that the US downloaded the most during the week with 604 million. China was in second place, having downloaded a total of 183 million and the UK closely followed with 132 million downloads.
The firm predicts that one-billion-download weeks will become the norm in 2013 and break past a two-billion download week during Q4.
