Analysts have said that Apple is likely to move to refreshing its iPad line-up twice per year instead of just once.
According to Digital Spy, Brian White of analyst firm Topeka Capital Markets said he was told by industry sources at CES that the fifth gen iPad and the second gen iPad Mini would both be launched in March this year.
He added that his sources said that there would still be another product launch in October, as there was last year, leading him to speculate at a twice-yearly refresh.
However, it is debateable whether or not this strategy will pay off, as the double launch seen last year angered a large number of Apple fans, many of whom like to be seen as having the latest device.

Microsoft has filed a patent for a mobile technology called Inconspicuous Mode, aimed at helping you not be 'that guy' who disrupts movies, meals, or meetings with noisy, bright-screened phone alerts. It's a setting that would effectively put your phone in stealth mode when the device sensed it was in a movie theater (thanks to location information) and that the lights had gone down. The idea is, you could still receive alerts if a call or text came in, but no one around you would be disturb by phone sounds or screen flashes.

Europe’s iPhone 5 users have developed an almost insatiable appetite for data, with many gorging on up to four-times the amount consumed by those still using an iPhone on a 3G network.
A new study by data analysis company Arieso saw over one million smartphone users on European 3G networks monitored over 24 hours to measure the demand for data. Its results showed that iPhone 5 users sought 50 per cent more data than iPhone 4S users.
"One iPhone 5 user is effectively worth about 4 iPhone 3G users," said report author Michael Flanagan.
The study also showed an increase in the amount of data uploaded to social networking sites, with Flanagan stating that this data now represented one sixth of the amount of data downloaded as opposed to one seventh last year.
With regard to the average amount of data generated and uploaded by a device, Samsung’s Galaxy S III was placed just ahead of the iPhone.

Developers recently submitted 15,000 BlackBerry 10 apps in less than two days during a virtual Community Port-a-Thon event, RIM (Research In Motion) has reported.
The event, which began on January 11th, saw developers rewarded with $100 for each eligible mobile game or app approved for the new BlackBerry 10. Those who successfully put forward between five and ten apps received a BlackBerry 10 Dev Alpha device.
Meanwhile, the first ten developers to submit ten approved apps were rewarded with a paid trip to BlackBerry Jam Europe, which will be held in Amsterdam in February.
"37.5 hours in, we hit 15,000 apps for this portathon," tweeted BlackBerry Development Head Alec Saunders. "Feel like I've run a marathon."
The BlackBerry 10, which runs on the same QNX-based software that powers RIM's BlackBerry PlayBook tablet, will be officially unveiled on January 30th.

Apple has cut its iPhone 5 component orders by half due to ‘weaker-than-expected’ demand, reports WSJ.
People ‘familiar with the situation’ told WSJ that Apple’s orders of iPhone 5 screens for the January-March quarter dropped by half of what the company had previously planned to order.
Also the company has cut orders for a number of other iPhone 5 components, which have not been specified yet, suggesting that the sales of the firm’s latest smartphone haven’t been as strong as expected.
Released back in September, the iPhone 5 has been in direct competition with Samsung’s flagship Galaxy S3 device. Analysts predict that Samsung will increase its lead of Apple by growing its smartphone sales by 35 per cent this year. In Q3 2012, Apple held 14.6 per cent of worldwide smartphone shipments, down from a peak of 23 per cent in Q4 2011 and Q1 of 2012.

Samsung has announced that its flagship Galaxy S series has sold more than 100 million units in just over two years.
The announcement was made in typical Samsung fashion, with a photograph depicting staff displaying the record sales figure across a number of Samsung smartphones.
With the Galaxy S3 having average daily sales of 190,000 units, the smartphone has helped drive Samsung to the top of the global smartphone market.

New rumours about Apple devices have surfaced which indicate there may be a fifth gen iPad as well as an iPad mini 2 released in March.
Analyst Brian White claims the iPad 5 will be lighter and thinner than the iPad 4, while a mini 2 is expected to sport the same frame but with updated components.
The news will likely incense those that have recently purchased an Apple tablet, what with half of iPad 3 owners left fuming about the October iPad 4 release – just seven months after its predecessor.
Apple recently dismissed claims that it is working on a budget iPhone, but White believes that Apple will launch new iPhones in different sizes and colours in May or June.

It's no secret that iOS mobile gaming leaves us wanting when it comes to physical controls. Fortunately, at CES 2013, iFrogzis out to fill that void with the Caliber Advantage iPhone case-gone-console. The Caliber Advantage, an iPhone 5 and fifth-generation iPod touch accessory, uses Bluetooth 4.0 to connect to the corresponding enabled application rather than the phone itself. iFrogz mentions that a deal with Epic Games and Chair Entertainment to build the basis for the Caliber software powered by the Unreal Engine is in the works. In fact, later this April the company will host its own developer conference aimed at seriously expanding the platform and hopefully adding support for previously released titles. Marrying a case with a full-fledged controller certainly adds some bulk, but after handling the prototype, the approximate half inch of added girth honestly didn't incite any ill feelings. The chassis, while clearly heavy on the plastic, felt more sturdy than anticipated, and fairly natural to our hands. As for the buttons? Crisp and responsive, hard though that may be to believe. The unit is set to retail at $70, and curious iOS gamers can feel free to take a closer look in the gallery below.

Google has a tendency to post minor Android updates on devices and timetables we wouldn't entirely expect. We might just be witnessing a repeat: both Brazil's Adrenaline and Malaysia's Lowyat.net claim to have seen newly shippingNexus 4s with an as yet unannounced Android 4.2.2. What's new in the extra 0.0.1's worth of code isn't immediately evident, although the update (if real) isn't known to be rolling out as a separate upgrade for existing devices. We've reached out to Google for comment; let us know if you see any 4.2.2-based surprises in the interim.

Electronic Arts' mobile-focused All Play label saw out 2012 on a four-month high. After buckling under the weight of demand on its initial release, The Simpsons: Tapped Out relaunched on the iOS App Store in August, made a dash for the upper reaches of the top-grossing charts, and has since refused to budge. In October, it was the highest grossing game in the world for four straight weeks, attracting 2.8 million DAUs at its peak, and rounding out the month with a Treehouse of Terror pack that was played by more people than watched the TV series' own Halloween special. It's in the top-grossing chart right now, in fact, sandwiched between Clash of Clans and Hay Day in third place.
Popcap's admirable back-catalogue aside, The Simpsons: Tapped Out is one of EA's most significant mobile hits since its very public transition to digital began. Other EA products can be found among the App Store's most lucrative games - FIFA Soccer 13 is in fifth place, for example - but Tapped Out is particularly important because it is free. According to Nick Earl, senior vice president and general manager of All Play, from here on the £2.99 being charged for FIFA will be a rarity.
"EA sees mobile as the tip of the spear, the key growth area for our digital strategy"
"EA sees mobile as the tip of the spear," Earl says, "the key growth area for our digital strategy.
"For the most part [it will be free-to-play]. There will be some exceptions here and there, where it just makes sense to offer a one-time paid download, but for all intents and purposes freemium is what we're doing going forward. From here, you'll really see freemium rule the day.
"Freemium games are really driving our direction from a business model perspective. We're huge believers in the model. Not only is it here to stay, it's also really going to power the spread of mobile devices."
Successes like All Play's Tapped Out and The Sims Free Play have strengthened that resolve. In relative terms, EA entered the mobile gaming market during its pre-history, acquiring Jamdat for $680 million several years before the existence of either iOS or the App Store. It was a lot of money back then, and it still sounds like a lot of money now, but it enabled EA to become what Earl terms "king of the hill" of premium priced mobile games. What we now know is that there was another, much bigger hill just beyond premium, and EA was slow in staking a new claim. According to Earl, that changed in 2012.

During the fourth quarter of 2012, Nokia sold 4.4 million Lumia smartphones—a significant rise from the previous quarter, which featured sales of 2.9 million Lumia devices. The Lumia line runs Microsoft's Windows Phone operating system, which largely replaced Symbian as Nokia's smartphone software of choice. Despite that shift and Nokia's emphasis on Windows Phone, however, the company still sold 2.2 million Symbian smartphones during the quarter. The question remains whether Nokia should have gone with Windows Phone in the first place, or embraced an alternate platform such as Android; an anti-Elop camp has emerged in recent months, arguing that Symbian was still a viable platform before Elop consigned it to the dustbin of tech history. For now at least, both sides seem to be right: Symbian still sells despite Nokia's attempts to take it increasingly offline, and Lumia phones are selling well. It'll take more time—perhaps a lot more time—before the ramifications of Elop's bet become clear.

Following news that a Java 0-day has been rolled into exploit kits, without any patch to fix the vulnerability, Mozilla and Apple have blocked the latest versions of Java on Firefox and Mac OS X respectively. Mozilla has taken steps to protect its user base from the yet-unpatched vulnerability. Mozilla has added to its Firefox add-on block-list: Java 7 Update 10, Java 7 Update 9, Java 6 Update 38 and Java 6 Update 37. Similar steps have also been taken by Apple; it has updated its anti-malware system to only allow version 1.7.10.19 or higher, thereby automatically blocking the vulnerable version, 1.7.10.18."Here are some ways to disable Java, if you're not sure how.

Game based on sequel to Christmas classic also manages to top app store charts
The Snowman and the Snowdog game for mobiles has been downloaded over one million times in the UK between its launch on December 9th and the end of 2012.
The game, which was developed to celebrate the new sequel to Channel 4’s Christmas classic The Snowman, also topped some of app store charts over Christmas, including reaching number one in all free iPad and iPhone games. It was also released on Android.
The Snowman and The Snowdog game was created for Channel 4 by East Midlands based developer Crash Lab, which was founded by the industry veterans involved in creating TimeSplitters at Free Radical Design and Goldeneye 007 and Jet Force Gemini at Rare.
“We set out to make a game that both kids and adults would enjoy, and we got our first inkling that we may have succeeded when we heard that Raymond Briggs himself had played and enjoyed it. But for the game to go on to hit this milestone in the UK alone is just incredible,” said Crash Lab managing director Steve Ellis.
Channel 4’s commissioning editor for games Colin Macdonald added: “We wanted a beautiful game to accompany a beautiful film and I’m absolutely delighted so many people have enjoyed the experience of both. I’ve been genuinely moved by many of the 6,000+ reviews players have posted of the game in app stores.”
