You still can't touch an OUYA. Not until March, at the earliest, and that's only if you're a Kickstarter backer. However, one lucky group of folks already has access: game developers. Those among us who shelled out $700 -- as well as the 10 lucky studios who won that contest -- got an early jump on a pre-rooted OUYA dev kit, while those of us who dropped $95 (or more) are left in the lurch. Of course, those early units aren't exactly the couch-friendly consoles we expect to arrive in a few months, but they are representative of the final hardware.
And let's face it -- the OUYA is important. A crowdfunded, extremely inexpensive, open-source game console? That's not exactly the standard (heck, Sony's PlayStation 3 debuted with a $500 baseline). The OUYA is essentially taking the low-cost / high-performance aspect of mobile gaming and moving it into a TV-friendly space, and that concept has even spawned some imitators (the likes of which we'll assuredly see more).
But what do we know about actually using the OUYA? Beyond basic specs and a sporadic showering of images, we've never actually touched the thing. With that in mind, we asked a trio of developers who've spent the last month with their dev kits how they feel about the console thus far, and we've compiled their thoughts below. One month out, how does the OUYA dev kit stack up for developers? Let's find out!

PlayJam's Android-powered portable console successfully funded more than six times over
The GameStick Kickstarter campaign wrapped up today, as PlayJam's proposal for an Android-powered console garnered a total of $647,658 in funding from 5,691 backers. When it launched January 2, the GameStick goal was to raise $100,000.
Like the similarly Kickstarted Ouya, GameStick is an Android-powered console intended to bring the Google operating system to the TV console market in an open fashion. It also features an Amlogic 8726-MXS processor, WiFi and Bluetooth functionality, 1GB of DDR3 memory, 8GB of NAND Flash memory, and its own wireless controller, which also houses the diminutive GameStick itself when not in use.
GameStick is expected to ship in April. The basic console and controller combo will sell for $79.

To give the Mars Rover Curiosity the brains she needs to operate took 5 million lines of code. And while the Mars Science Laboratory team froze the code a year before the roaming laboratory landed on August 5, they kept sending software updates to the spacecraft during its 253-day, 352 million-mile flight. In its belly, Curiosity has two computers, a primary and a backup. Fun fact: Apple'siPhone 5 has more processing power than this one-eyed explorer. 'You're carrying more processing power in your pocket than Curiosity,' Ben Cichy, chief flight software engineer, told an audience at this year's MacWorld.

Data from Q4 2012 has revealed that for the first time ever, Apple overtook Samsung as the top US mobile phone maker.
Strategy Analytics stated that following its debut of the iPhone 5 in September last year, Apple shipped an estimated 17.7 million handsets in the US, scoring a market share of 34 per cent.
Meanwhile, Samsung slipped into second place, shipping 16.8 million devices with a market share just shy of its arch rival, managing 32 per cent.
Both firms showed healthy gains on the previous year however, with Apple building from the 25 per cent market share it held in 2011.

In light of Wednesday's BlackBerry 10 launch, new data from ABI Research predicts that more than 20 million of the avant-garde devices will be in active use by the end of 2013, with Windows Phone handsets reaching more than twice the usage at 45m actives.
The global total of installed smartphones will hit 1.4bn by the end of the year, with Android securing a 57 per cent market share and iOS bagging 21 per cent.
In terms of tablets, the market is expected to 268m actives, as iPad continues to lead with a 62 per cent share compared to 28 per cent for Android. The annual growth rate on 2012, however, will be 125 per cent for tablets ahead of 44 per cent for smartphones.
Aapo Markkanen, senior analyst, said: "2013 should be seen as relative success for both Microsoft and BlackBerry. For the end of the year, we expect there to be 45 million Windows Phone handsets in use, with BlackBerry 10 holding an installed base of close to 20 million. Microsoft will also have 5.5 million Windows-powered tablets to show for it.
"The greatest fear for both Microsoft and BlackBerry is that the initial sales of their smartphones will disappoint and thereby kill off the developer interest, which then would effectively close the window of opportunity on further sales success. Our view is that the installed bases of this scale would be large enough to keep these two in the game. It will definitely also help that both firms have actively kept the developers’ interest in mind while designing and rolling out their platforms."

The Simpsons: Tapped Out game generated over $23m.
EA has released non-GAAP financials for its fiscal Q3 ending December 31st 2012, claiming it was the number one global iOS games publisher last year. Indeed, The Simpson: Tapped Out generated revenues of $23m, making it one of the highest grossing games on the Apple platform in the period.
Revenue for the studio's mobile games and services – including handheld consoles – hit $100m, an 18 per cent year-on-year increase.
Over the past year the firm has reiterated its focus on mobile and digital games, saying freemium will become 'the norm' and that 'mobile will push console gaming into a niche'. With that in mind, EA will likely be pleased that the Origin digital games portal now has more than 39m registered users, with 17m from mobile devices.

For the ninth consecutive month, Samsung has held on to its crown as the UK’s most popular smartphone, after claiming top spot in uSwitch’s January top ten with its Galaxy S III handset.
Based on sales and web searches, uSwitch found that Samsung not only occupied first place for the month of January, but also second and third with the Galaxy Ace and Galaxy S II respectively.
Elsewhere, Nokia found four of its smartphones in the top ten, with its Nokia 100 and C2-01 completing the top five and its Lumia 800 and 610 taking eighth and ninth place.
The final two spots were taken by Apple, with the 16GB version of its iPhone 5 in seventh and the 16GB iPhone 4S in tenth.
Ernest Doku from uSwitch, said: “After December’s mobile top ten, which read like a smartphone Santa wish-list, it’s been all-change in January. The UK’s loyalty to brand Samsung is unwavering, but beyond that we’ve seen customers shaking-up the rankings, leaving Apple’s 4S for dust in favour of offerings from LG and Nokia.
“With the launch of a revamped BlackBerry in the full-touch flagship Z10 and Nokia’s Lumia 620 looking to disrupt the affordable end of the spectrum, expect some significant movement in the coming weeks – not to mention major smartphone announcements amidst February’s Mobile World Congress.”

Brits who ground their fingers to stumps hammering their Lumia's update button will finally be able to rest, as Nokia UK has confirmed that Windows 7.8 is rolling out today. The company has also revealed O2's pricing for the Lumia 620, the handset that'll bring Windows Phone 8 to the cash-strapped masses. It's available from today on the oxygen-themed network, setting you back £149.99 or free on contracts priced over £18.50. Normally, the interchangeable back plates would cost around £20, but O2 is offering buyers a choice of a yellow, orange, green, white or cyan model for free.
You'll also be able to pick up the quirky handset from ThreeUKand Virgin Media today, although neither has opened up about pricing just yet. Vodafone has announced that it'll launch the phone on February 6th with a choice of white or black covers, while EE has yet to commit to carrying the handset. If you saw removable covers and hoped that the 620 would benefit from the same wireless charging plates we saw in the 820, we've got some bad news -- Nokia has said it's not likely to happen.

British Windows Phone owners won't have to let their TV viewing habits slip while they're on the move. TVCatchup has just posted the promised Windows Phone 8 version of its streaming app, giving locals access to live programming from the BBC, ITV and others. OS-specific optimizations aren't extensive, but they exist -- it's possible to pin a favorite network to the Start screen, and to use voice commands to jump directly to a channel or guide. Viewers just need to hit the Windows Phone Store to stay on top of the latest shows with their Lumias.

Imangi Studios' Temple Run 2 reached 50 million downloads in its first two weeks, setting a new record for a mobile game.
Angry Birds Space was the previous fastest game to hit 50 million downloads across all platforms, but it took 35 days to reach that target. Temple Run 2 managed it in just 13 days.
"Temple Run has evolved into something so much bigger than us," said Imangi co-founder Keith Shepherd. "The game has performed beyond our wildest dreams, and we are thrilled that gamers and fans have embraced Temple Run 2 in such a short period of time."
Temple Run 2 is free-to-play, and was downloaded more than 6 million times within 24 hours of being launched on the iOS App Store. However, subsequent releases on Google Play and the Amazon Marketplace pushed the game to new heights of popularity, though it is still some way short of Temple Run's 170 million downloads.

EA has reported a decline in revenues for FY13 Q3 with a surge in digital sales unable to offset a decline in physical games sales.
Digital net revenue for the quarter ending December 31stclimbed from $274m last year to $321m, but revenue from packaged goods fell from $738m to $568m.
GAAP net loss was reduced from $205m to $45m.

COO Peter Moore added: "EA had six of the top twenty titles in Western markets in 2012, compared to four in 2011. EA was also the No.1 publisher on iOS worldwide for the year."
FIFA 13 was one of the star performers, shifting 12m units up to and including the period – a 23 per cent increase over FIFA 12. FIFA 13’s digital revenues climbed an incredible 98 per cent, passing $100m. Total FIFA series digital revenue stands at over $230m year-to-date
The Battlefield 3 Premium service has now generated over $108m.

A new discovered malware is potentially one of the most costly viruses yet discovered. Uncovered by NQ Mobile, the 'Bill Shocker' (a.expense.Extension.a) virus has already impacted 620,000 users in China and poses a threat to unprotected Android devices worldwide. Bill Shocker downloads in the background, without arousing the mobile device owner's suspicion. The infection can then take remote control of the device, including the contact list, Internet connections and dialing and texting functions. Once the malware has turned the phone into a "zombie," the infection uses the device to send text message to the profit of advertisers. In many cases, the threat will overrun the user's bundling quota, which subjects the user to additional charges.

The company formerly known as Research In Motion—which decided to cut right to the proverbial chase and rename itself 'BlackBerry'—launched its much-anticipated BlackBerry 10 operating system at a high-profile event in New York City Jan. 30. Meanwhile, Microsoft is still dumping tons of money and effort into Windows Phone. But can either smartphone OS — or another player, for that matter — successfully challenge Apple iOS and Google Android, which one research firm estimated as running on 92 percent of smartphonesshipped in the fourth quarter of 2012? What would it take for any company to launch that sort of successful effort?

As BlackBerry launched its newest operating system, the firm claimed it would feature over 70,000 bespoke apps. Turns out, they may have told a little porkie.
Following the event, a number of Android's own employees spoke of the frantic process behind producing the apps, many of which have been revealed to be rushed ports of Android applications.
BlackBerry's vice president of global alliances and business development, Martyn Mallick, confessed to reporters following the event that "40 per cent of BB10 apps are wrapped Android applications".
Mallick also revealed that the firm's recent Port-a-thin initiative played a big role in the app creation process, with individuals with any functional app being able to sell it to the firm by producing a version compatible with BB10 using the firm's own porting tools.
Outside of these rehashed applications, a number of 'apps' available on the OS are simply portals to mobile versions of web sites.
Obviously, given that BB10 only launched last night, it's only natural for there to be a number of hastily converted and sparsely featured apps.
But still, BlackBerry's claim of 70,000 'bespoke apps' is a very tall one indeed.
