Talk of Microsoft finally deploying Windows Phone 7.8 has been building to a crescendo -- and we're glad to confirm it's more than just noise. The more customizable home and lock screens, Marketplace improvements and numerous under-the-hood upgrades are rolling out to all of Nokia's Windows Phone 7.5 devices, starting today and continuing through February. The company hasn't confirmed who goes first, althoughAT&T's Lumia 900 is believed to be part of the earliest wave. Other upgrades will depend on carrier timing, if you're using a locked phone, but the plan to push 7.8 is still good news for those who've wanted to keep their early Lumias as current as possible.

This pass through audio modulator lets you playback stereo audio on two Tesla coils. But donât fret, you can just use mono files if you only have one coil on hand. On one side there are inputs that connect to the audio source. The other side drives the Tesla coil, switching it on and off based on the relationship between a reference voltage and the audio signal. As you can hear in the video after the break this sounds great as long as you have the right kind of source audio.
The song played in that clip is the Duke Nukem 3D theme. [Daniel] started with a MIDI file and removed the chimes and drums to make the playback a little cleaner. The demo uses just one coil because the other was destroyed during testing when feedback between the two became a problem.
For some reason this reminds us of that singing Tesla coil hat. If youâre already on ourmailing list (sign up in the sidebar) you know weâre getting pretty close to unveiling our own awesome Tesla coil project. It doesnât sing⊠yet.

New benchmarking mode and updated visuals added in latest version
Epic Games has released its free technical demonstration of Unreal Engine 3 on Googleâs Android operating system.
A new benchmarking mode and updated visuals have been added giving users more to experience in this version of the app.
In addition to this Andriod announcement, Epic has also released an update for the app on iOS, which now available for iPad, iPhone and iPod touch. The tech demo first appeared on iOS in 2010.
In Epic Citadel, players navigate the dynamic fantasy setting of the award-winning smartphone game, Infinity Blade. Users can wander between the circus bazaar, the sweeping cathedral, among other elements in a medieval township.
âWhile weâve licensed our engine to help developers build and ship many fantastic games for Android, Epic Citadel is our first internally developed product to be released to Android users,â said Jay Wilbur, vice president of Epic Games.

A US court judge has handed down a number of post-trial rulings from last year's Apple vs Samsung patent case.
Within a 32 page order, district court judge Lucy Koh said she agreed with the jury's final decision, which ruled that Samsung did ultimately infringe on a number of Apple's patents.
However, Koh made it clear within the report that she disagreed with the jury's decision to find that Samsung "wilfully" infringed Apple's patents.
Within the ruling, the judge stated that in order for Samsung to have wllfully infringed on Apple's patents, Apple would need to prove "by clear and convincing evidence that the infringer acted despite an objectively high likelihood that its actions constituted infringement of a valid patent."
Apple will no doubt be reeling from the decision, given that if the decision had rules in the company's favour, it would have been able to collect triple the amount of damages it is set to receive from Samsung.
The length trial between the two giants was well publicised, ending in August last year as a jury ruled in favour of Apple, subsequently awarding them $1.05 million in damages.
While the trial ended last year, the firms have continued to take shots at each other as Apple tried to add on an additional $500 million, whilst Samsung battled to reduce the damages by $600 million.

Surprise, surprise. A new report has revealed that iPhone users are responsible for the highest phone bills, beating users of rival smartphones by a large margin.
The report compiled by Consumer Intelligence Research Partners found that 60 per cent of iPhone users polled spent over $100 per month on their mobile plans, whilst ten per cent admitted to running up bills over $200.
Just six per cent of iPhone users spent under $50 on their services. In comparison, twelve per cent of Android users queried spent below the $50 mark.
The findings of the report will be unsurprising to most, iPhone owners especially.
Whilst the report failed to mention what caused the increased costs for iPhone users, the devices are typically sold on higher priced cellular plans to begin with, without factoring in subsided costs of the handset itself per month.
So, are Android users more mindful of their data plans than their iPhone using neighbours, or is it safe to
Whether its the notion that Android are more mindful of their data plans than their iPhone using neighbours, or the idea that Android is simply viewed as the cheaper brand, it would seem that prospective smartphone buyers on a budget should stick with Android.

BlackBerry, formerly known as Research in Motion, has officially announced its BlackBerry Z10 smartphone.
The Z10 will be the first device to run the firm's latest operating system, BlackBerry 10.
BlackBerry unveiled the Z10, along with the new operating system at today's BlackBerry experience event, which was streamed live around the world.
UK users will be able to get their hands on the device from Thursday 31st January from a number of carriers, including EE, O2 and Vodafone.
The Z10 is pegged as BlackBerry's new class of products, which have been produced to go head-to-head with the likes of Apple's iPhone and Samsung's Galaxy devices.
BlackBerry's bullish approach was apparent as CEO Thorstein Heins revealed the device and highlighted its rightful place amongst its rival firms' flagship devices.
A key feature of the device highlighted by the CEO was the device's trademark BlackBerry keyboard, which boasts a range of features, such as the ability to recognise finger swipes whilst in sleep mode.
"BlackBerry 10 devices are absolutely the best typing experience in the industry. Period," said Heins.
The Z10 packs a 4.2-inch screen, offering up a resolution of up to 1,280 x 768 and 356 pixels per inch â which, in terms of ppi actually provides a sharper picture than the iPhone 5 and its 326 ppi display.
Additional specs include a 1.5GHz dual-core Qualcomm Snapdragon processor, 2GB RAM, 4G LTE connectivity, dual-band Wi-Fi, Bluetooth 4.0 and built-in storage of 16GB, which is expandable to 64GB via microSD card.
Completing the device is an eight-megapixel rear camera and two-megapixel front-facing camera, which are equipped with a new feature known as Time Shift, allowing users to "go back in time" and decide on the optimal image, say, if a friend blinks or moves.
All of this is packed into a 0.35-inch thin frame that weighs 4.78 ounces, and offers strong a resemblance to Apple's iPhone 5.
Battery life is said to offer ten hours of talk time, video playback of up to 11 hours and standby time of 305 hours.

The new highly anticipated operating system from BlackBerry has finally arrived, and it heavily focuses on making you as lazy as possible.
BlackBerry 10 is hell bent on making moving between apps, programs and files as quick and simple as possible, all by using BlackBerry Flow.
BB Flow enables users to swipe between apps, that are all running in real time on a device. For instance, if youâre watching a video on YouTube and you receive an email, you donât have to exit the video and open up your email application to view your new message, you can simply swipe the screen across and have a peek at BlackBerry Hub â the place on your new phone that collects all the real-time data thatâs currently coming in, including emails, tweets, Facebook interactions and so on.
The Hub not only collates all the usual information coming in, it also allows you to email and tweet straight from it, meaning you donât have to enter yet another app. You can look at a friend's profile from the Hub too, which pulls in info from said friend's social network profiles and linkedIn account.
âDonât search anymore, the device adapts to you,â commented BlackBerry CEO Thorsten Heins as the launch event as attendees wooed over this feature.
As well as reducing your need to Google your acquaintances, the new BB keyboard is designed let you become a lot less trigger happy with the space bar.
Canâtbebotheredtoputspacesinbetweenwords? It doesnât matter, just give the space bar a tap at the end of a sentence and BB10 will fill them in for you. Also, you no longer need to actually type most of the words ever again, as important and frequent words appear above certain letters on the QWERTY keyboard, so you can just flick them into a text message.
Multilingual users will be happy to hear that you can now type in a number of different languages and the keyboard will recognise this and change the automatic words to coincide with the language.
BBM has been given a nice update as well, you can now move back and forth from messaging and video calling, all within the same app. The addition of BBM ScreenShare means you can send your screen to another users and show them pics, books, documents and more. Your whole screen and movements will appear on their device.
A few other interesting features include BB Remember â an app to create folders for shopping lists, vacations, and anything else you can possibly think of. You can add reminders and voice notes as well, AND it is all integrated with Outlook notes and tasks as well as Evernote notebook. Thereâs also a built-in photo editor featuring effects, styles and enhancements, and the Story Maker app brings all your media together and automatically makes videos out of it.
As well as the operating system, BlackBerry also unveiled two new devices - the BlackBerry Z10 and the BlackBerry Q10.

Along with its new OS and the Z10 smartphone, BlackBerry also announced its first BB10 smartphone with a physical keyboard at its launch event today.
Designed to provide what CEO Thorsten Heins called âthe best typing experience in the industryâ, the Q10 has a touchscreen AND that infamous BlackBerry physical keyboard.
So whether youâve got fat thumb issues or hate the feel of a real keyboard, every BB fan should be satisfied with typing on the Q10.
On the inside, the Q10 features BB10, obviously, and you can check out all the juicy OS features here. On the outside, the smartphone is encased in a material that has been specially designed for BlackBerry and is apparently thinner, lighter and stronger than plastic.
Whilst the BlackBerry Z10 will be available in the UK from tomorrow (Jan 31st), BlackBerry provided few details about the release of the Q10.

XBMC 12 Frodo has spent enough time in beta that you'd think it was walking to Mordor. Whatever prompted the long trek, it's at last over: the finished version of XBMC 12 is hitting the servers. As promised, the completed edition significantly expands the media center app's universe to include initial support for Android and Raspberry Pi, as well as live TV and DVR functionality. Sticklers for quality may like the upgrade as well, as there's new support for Dolby TrueHD and DTS HD Master Audio processing on top of 10-bit H.264 video decoding. There's considerably more on tap with the completed Frodo build than what we can list here, so hit the download link if you want to see what two months of testing delivers.

PlayJam has unveiled a new pad design and docking station for its forthcoming portable Android console, GameStick. At the time of writing, GameStick has raised $517,199, having originally sought $100,000 worth of backing. Its deadline is on Friday 1st February. The console is playable by inserting the GameStick into the HDMI slot of any television.Since PlayJam published concept images, it has incorporated community feedback into the final design of the controller and hardware by modifying the grips and moving the housing for the HDMI stick to the rear of the controller. The GameStick itself now supports an expandable 32GB MicroSD card slot and a docking station has been announced in order to support peripherals and more storage.âThe Kickstarter campaign has been a roller coaster of a ride and one which has given us more feedback than we could ever have possibly imagined.â said PlayJam CMO Anthony Johnson. âWe have been able to take that input and literally better shape our product to give our backers a truly bespoke creation â one which has been designed by the Kickstarter community that backed it.â

With the BlackBerry 10 launch just around the corner, there is a lot of pressure on RIM's CEO to provide a 'Steve Jobs Moment.' However, given BlackBerry's 1.1% percent market share compared to the combined 92% share between rivals Android and iOS, it's a long road back. To add to the struggle, no other first-generation smartphone leader has been able to pull off this kind of rebirth. Palm and Symbian are dead and Microsoft is struggling. But, as one mobile analyst explains, RIM has a chance to carve out its own market with tomorrow's launch of BlackBerry 10 given that they get a few things right. They need to heavily promote their devices to CEOs, heavily promote the top apps to users, and most of all, they need to be able to explain why people should give it a look.

Apple has been touting iOS 6 as 'the world's most advanced operating system,' and has now released the iOS 6.1 update, which may call for the firm to think up an even more ostentatious slogan for the software.
To date, Apple claims iOS users have uploaded over nine billion photos to Photo Stream, sent over 450 billion iMessages and received over four trillion notifications, while almost 300m iOS devices are running on iOS 6.
6.1 will expand LTE support to 36 and 23 new iPhone and iPad carriers, respectively, enabling 4G to iPhone 5, iPad Mini and Retina Display iPad users. This comes after Apple's LTE-enabled iPad 3 was hit with false advertising complaints in a number of countries, overlooking the fact that not all regions had 4G at the time of release.
A partnership with Fandango will allow US-based iOS 6.1 users to book cinema tickets through Siri, while iTunes Match subscribers able to download individual songs to their iOS devices from iCloud.
Philip Schiller, SVP of worldwide marketing, Apple, said: "With nearly 300 million iPhone, iPad and iPod touch devices on iOS 6 in just five months, it may be the most popular new version of an OS in history.
"iOS 6.1 brings LTE support to more markets around the world, so even more users can enjoy ultrafast Safari browsing, FaceTime video calls, iCloud services, and iTunes and App Store downloads."
The 6.1 update is available for iPhone 5, iPhone 4S, iPhone 4, iPhone 3GS, iPad (third and fourth generation), iPad mini, iPad 2 and iPod touch (fourth and fifth generation).

91.5 million mobile phones collecting dust all over the UK.
UK mobile phone users are currently sitting atop a proverbial goldmine, after a new report from mobile phone and tablet recycling price comparison site SellMyMobile.com revealed that there are 91.5 million unused phones lying around British homes, worth over ÂŁ6.86 billion.
The study shows that the average UK mobile phone user has 2.06 phones at home, while 78 per cent have at least one unused device at home, and over a third (33.7 per cent) are holding on to three or more devices.
According to SellMyMobile.com, the average handset is now worth around ÂŁ75 when recycled online. This means that British consumers are missing out on a potential ÂŁ154.40 in old devices.
When asked why they have been unable to part with their old handsets, almost one in five (19.26 per cent) said that they are just âtoo lazyâ, while 18.7 per cent said that they âdonât know what to doâ with them.
However, the report also shows that privacy plays a key role when it comes to deciding whether or not to part with an old phone. Figures show that 14.9 per cent will hold on to their device as they are âafraid that personal data will be jeopardisedâ and 11.8 per cent arenât sure how to wipe data before selling it on.
Colin White, managing director at SellMyMobile.com, commented: âIn todayâs tough economic climate, some extra cash can make all the difference. So itâs surprising that we are literally sitting on a potential goldmine stashed away in boxes at home. There are so many companies willing to pay good money for consumers looking to recycle their old phone, and they all offer tips and advice if you are unsure about how to send it off, or how to wipe old data from your phone.
âSo if youâre looking to make some cash, either to help treat yourself to help beat the January blues, or pay off those dreaded Christmas credit card debts, make sure you search your old drawers to see how much you could have stashed at home. But once youâve found your old phones, make sure you use a recycling service to get the best deal, as cash back can vary by an average of ÂŁ59.58 between sites for the same phone.â
According to the latest data from January trade-ins via SellMyMobile.com, Appleâs iPhone 4 16GB has been the most traded in handset in January 2013, fetching ÂŁ139, followed by the BlackBerry Curve 8520 for ÂŁ54.
The most valuable device to be traded online is currently the BlackBerry Porsche Design worth up to ÂŁ547, followed by the Apple iPhone 5 64GB at ÂŁ400.

4GEE customers can get service set up in any EE store.
iPhone 5 customers on 4GEE tariffs can now receive visual voicemail on their devices, allowing them to see all voicemail messages at the same time.
EE launched the service yesterday (January 28th), which also allows iPhone 5 users to listen to voicemail messages in any order, as well as enabling them to use play and pause buttons to control playback.
Furthermore, the service allows users skim through and replay parts of their messages via the scrubber bar on their handset.
Current iPhone 5 customers with EE can receive the new service via text, while new iPhone 5 users on 4GEE contracts can get visual voicemail activated by visiting any EE store.
