US retailers, including Amazon and GameStop, line up to stock console
The $100 games console, Ouya, is headed to retail, its maker has confirmed today.
US retailers including Amazon, GameStop, Best Buy and Target will stock the Android-powered console, thanks to the consumer response to the device.
Ouya is due to launch publically in June, but Kickstarter backers are still expected to receive their console before it hits stores.
Ouya can be pre-ordered from its official website for $99.99. For that price, users get the console, one wireless Bluetooth controller, a power adopter (region specific), two AA batteries and a HDMI cable. Additional controllers can be purchased for $49.99.
Recently, Ouya’s controller was redesigned with some tweaks to improve its quality and responsiveness.

Developers will receive free BB10 smartphones as a sweetener to produce titles for new OS.
Games publishing platform Unity currently offers multi-channel development tools for desktop, web, consoles, and mobile, with the latter portion comprising Android and iOS.
Unity is now looking to strengthen its mobile division and has started work on a BlackBerry 10 plug-in. This will enable more than 1.5m Unity developers to publish games for smartphones running the OS, and also the PlayBook tablet once it can support BB10.
BlackBerry will provide Unity developers with BB10 smartphones to support the testing of games, while the two firms will run regular developer events in Europe and North America to stimulate solidarity.
David Helgason, CEO, Unity Technologies, said: "Unity developers have an extensive catalogue of incredible mobile games, many of which are award-winning.
"We’re excited to offer Unity developers easy access to the new powerful and rich BlackBerry 10 platform. We’re eager to provide them with another exciting avenue to have their games devoured by an audience hungry for entertainment."
A free beta version of the Unity BB10 add-on and free smartphone will be provided to a limited number of developers in spring, with a final release expected in summer.

New smartphone released in partnership with Microsoft.
Chinese manufacturer Huawei has joined forces with Microsoft to introduce a customised version of the Ascend W1 smartphone exclusive to Africa.
The two firms have teamed up in a bid to offer cost-effective smartphones to the continent, with the Huawei handset available for just $150.
Initially, the phone will only be on sale in seven countries – South Africa, Egypt, Nigeria, Kenya, Ivory Coast, Angola and Morocco. “Our aim is to be the most affordable Windows phone in Africa," said Gustavo Fuchs, director of Microsoft Windows Phone division in the Middle East & Africa.
Africa is now the world's fastest-growing region for smartphones, with an average sales growth of 43 per cent a year since 2000.
"Africa's mobile market continues to grow robustly, driven by competition among mobile operators, the availability of new data services and strong economic growth on the continent," said Matthew Reed, principal analyst for Africa and the Middle East at Informa Telecoms & Media.
"And substantial opportunities for further growth remain, because the rate of mobile penetration in Africa is the lowest among major world regions and fixed networks are under-developed or absent across much of the continent."

Samsung has unveiled more handsets in its flagship Galaxy range. This time it's two new dual-SIM budget phones aimed at the youth market.
First up is the Galaxy Young, which has a 3.27-inch 480 x 320 resolution LCD, 1GHz processor, 768MB or RAM, 4GB internal memory, microSD card slot, 3MP camera, and Android 4.1 Jelly Bean.
The Galaxy Fame features a lot of the same specs, but has a slightly bigger display of 3.5-inches, a 5MP camera, and oddly, only 512MB of RAM.
“Completing the smartphone experience, the Galaxy Young and Galaxy Fame come preloaded with Samsung Game Hub Lite, which allows easy access to fully optimised, best in class games for these devices. Samsung’s device management software, S Cloud, provides safe and simple syncing, back-up and storage options for information such as contacts, bookmarks, and SMS,” said Samsung.
Pricing and availability for both handsets has yet to be confirmed, but it is expected that they won’t arrive until after MWC at the end of the month.
It seems Samsung is covering every single market it can think of with its Galaxy range. The firm recently announced the Galaxy Express – aimed at ‘young social explorers’, as well as the Galaxy Xcover 2 – a phone designed to endure harsh weather conditions.

Robert Peckham takes a look at whether the current roster of Apple products is still capable of dominating the competition – with surprising results.
My last column raised some points about how Apple’s current management might not be steering the future path of the technology giant. Nothing I said was new, or particularly different to what other commentators have already written about, but it certainly generated some feedback.
So, I decided that instead of just hearing from everyone about the viable alternatives to Apple’s products, I thought I’d take a closer look and feel for myself.
The iPod Touch is still pretty unbeatable for features and sheer gorgeous design, but the new raft of Android-powered MP3 players from Samsung, Archos, and most recently Sony, make the conformity of Apple’s iTunes look very constricting indeed.
How about iPhone? The latest Android phones compete admirably against Apple and iOS. The number and variety of apps still has a long way to go to match Apple’s armoury, but each passing day sees Google edging closer to surpassing Apple’s domination of the smartphone market, and having used a Samsung Galaxy for a week, I can now see why Apple is worried.
iPad? I was so impressed with the Samsung phone that I borrowed a Galaxy tablet, and was loaned a Google Nexus 10. Apps apart, I really wonder why so many people are spending all that extra money on iPads.
Mac? Well this is where Apple should really be concerned. The MacBook hardware designs are gorgeous, but Sony, Toshiba, ASUS and Samsung all have very credible and far cheaper models. Is there an alternative to Apple’s iMac? Well, yes, from Dell primarily, but what used to set Apple apart was the Mac OS, and this is where Apple needs to really start worrying, because Microsoft is fighting back.
With Windows 7, Microsoft came pretty close to catching up with Mac OS X, but Windows 8 has stunned me, as I know it has for many other Apple users who were convinced that Microsoft would never have a truly viable alternative to the Mac OS.
Microsoft has achieved what Apple have been working towards for the past three years – a totally integrated operating system that works the same way on full-size computers, portable devices and mobile phones.
What follows is a sentence that I never believed I would see myself ever typing, but the extraordinary redesign of Windows that Microsoft has now unleashed really puts it into Apple’s league for ease of use, logic and simplicity.
Apple has announced the next release of Mac OS X, v10.9, will be called Lynx, and will be released sometime next spring; whether it will put it back ahead of Microsoft Windows, we’re going to have to wait and see.

What's black and white and pink all over? Well, not too long ago, the answer to that was the Droid RAZR M. As of today, however, Motorola's nearly bezel-less Jelly Bean handset will also be pretty in platinum. Available as a special edition for Best Buy, the Verizon-locked device has been given a steely makeover, but that's not to say the M's been scrubbed of all its flair. Turn the phone on its side and you'll note its hardware keys now pop with a blue hue. Apart from the cosmetic overhaul, not much else on the 4.3-inch device has changed. So, if you're still game for a solid Android mid-ranger, you can snag this freshly embellished phone for $50 on a two-year contract at the source below.

[Adam Outler] tipped us off about a cross-platform Android hacking suite he’s been working on. The project, which is called CASUAL, brings several things to the table. First and foremost it breaks down the OS requirements seen on some hacks. It can perform pretty much any Android hack out there and it doesn’t care if you’re using Linux, OS X, or Windows.
We’ve embedded two videos after the break. The screenshot seen above is from the first clip where [Adam] demonstrates the package rooting the Oppo Find5 Android phone. He then goes on to show off the scripting language CASUAL uses. This layer of abstraction should make it easier to deploy hacking packages, as CASUAL handles all of the underlying tools like the Android Debug Bridge, fastboot, and Heimdall (an open source Odin replacement which brings the low level tool to all OS platforms) . The second video demonstrates a Galaxy Note II being rooted, and having a new recovery image flashed.

Vodafone's British division has been shy to embrace Windows Phone much at all in recent months. There'll be no such reservation as of February 6th, when the carrier starts offering a wide array of Windows Phone 8 devices. HTC's Windows Phone 8X and 8S will ship in subdued colors, while the (partlyexpected) Lumia 620, 820 and 920 will be available in livelier hues. We've yet to hear about pricing -- and there's no mention of Samsung's ATIV S, for completists -- but the launch remains good news for UK residents who want to try Microsoft's approach to smartphones without leaving the Red Dot network.

Software originally developed for Linux in development for phones, tablets
Wine, an emulator which was designed to allow the use of Windows programs in a Linux environment, is coming to Android - with an early build of the code being given a public airing at FOSDEM (Free and Open source Software Developers' European Meeting) in Brussels.
According to Phoronix, which ran the original story, Wine for Android is still very much in the early stages and was shown running on a Mac emulating an Android environment itself, which had a very limiting effect on performance.
Nonetheless, the project is being worked on by Alexandre Julliard, who created the original Wine, so is in good hands. Should the project come to fruition, it could have wide-ranging ramifications for devices running any version of Android, such as smartphones or the coming Ouya micro-console.

This time last year Nokia was rumoured to be selling its luxury phone brand Vertu. The hearsay turned out to be true some six months later, though the Finnish firm retained a ten per cent share.
Vertu tells Android Authority that it will make an official press announcement on February 12th regarding its 'strong product road map,' but we've got some good old-fashioned conjecture for you to sink your teeth into in the meantime.
The word from Blog of Mobile is that Vertu will launch its first ever Android-powered smartphone this month, the Vertu Ti, moving on from Nokia's defunct Symbian OS.
The Ti is expected to run on Ice Cream Sandwich, and sport a dual-core Snapdragon S4, 800 x 480 pixel display, and 1,250 mAh battery.

Apple's flagship smartphone recorded a disappointing January in UK sales, whilst Samsung dominated the top three.
Data released from price comparison site uSwitch revealed that Samsung's Galaxy S3, S2 and the mid-range Galaxy Ace took the UK's top three spots – all outselling the iPhone 5.
Even more surprising is the positioning of Nokia's Symbian-based Nokia 100 and C2-01 handsets, which placed at fourth and fifth respectively in UK sales.
Both of the entry-level devices outsold Nokia's flagship devices, the Windows Phones based Lumina 800 and 610, which placed down in the list at eighth and ninth.
Apple's iPhone 5 placed at just seventh on the list, suffering a steep decline from the third place it managed back in October when the list initially launched.
Whilst sales of the iPhone have continued to decline, Samsung's Galaxy S3 has continued to see strong demand in the UK, fighting off competition and maintaining the top spot of the list since October.
Apple will no doubt be concerned to see it's flagship device outsold by its closest rival – not just by Samsung's own flagship Galaxy device, but both its older and budget devices too.
Even more troublesome for the US firm is the similar decline of its iPhone 4S, which has tumbled from being the UK's second highest selling device in October 2012, down to tenth on last month's list.
"The UK's loyalty to brand Samsung is unwavering, but beyond that we've seen customers shaking-up the rankings, leaving Apple's 4S for dust in favour of offerings from LG and Nokia," said Ernest Doku, telecoms expert at uSwitch.

via http://ax86.patrickaalto.com/ablog.html
I have managed to work quite a bit on ax86 during the past two weeks. Here is a list of the more inportant changes I have managed to implement:
- Better file system support. Since the EXT3 file system used in linux is case-sensitive, my file routines from DSx86 (which only supported FAT file system) had problems handling files that were not in all capital letters. I improved my file routines so that if a requested file (which in the internal DOS routines is always in all upper case) is not found from the file system, ax86 scans the directory, converts each found file to upper case, and then checks if this is the correct file. This will of course take much more time than directly accessing the file, so it is still a good idea to actually have all file names in all upper case.
I still have a problem with the directory scanning routines. Currently I re-open the directory and skip a number of files for every DOS FindNext call, when I think that a better and faster approach would be to open the directory once on the FindFirst call, read all the files into a memory buffer (perhaps a linked list), and then use this linked list when DOS calls the FindNext routine. The current system is very slow with directories that contain hundreds of files, and also causes problems when deleting files. Every time you do a DEL *.*, the current system deletes only HALF of the files (because a file that the routine skips over has already been deleted, it skips over the NEXT file instead of the CURRENT file). So this still needs to be changed, but still the new file system support now allows me to test much more games.
- AdLib audio support. This is what I spent the previous weekend on. I was able to mostly use the AdLib emulation routines from DSx86 (where the emulation runs on the ARM7 processor), but instead of using 9 separate hardware audio channels (with 9 separate sample buffers) I needed to change my code so that it mixes the output of the 9 AdLib channels to a single buffer which is then sent to the Android OpenSL system for output. This was relatively easy to do, and I managed to get audio out pretty soon, but the quality was very poor.
It turned out that in order to get rid of the clicks and stuttering of the audio, I needed to increase the buffer size to 2048 samples! In DSx86 I had a buffer size of 64 samples, so this was a major change to the code. In DSx86 the small buffer allowed me to handle the AdLib note commands between buffer fills and still not cause any audible problems with the note timing. The audio latency caused by the AdLib buffer filling was only around 2ms, while now with the 2048-sample buffer the latency is 64ms. Such a high latency causes very audible problems when handling note events only at 64ms intervals. Thus I needed to add a time stamp for every AdLib note event, and then interleave the buffer filling and note event handling so that the notes get handled at their correct relative times. This fixed most of the audio problems, but of course does not get rid of the actual latency, which is quite noticeable when a game plays sound effects with AdLib audio. I don't think there is much that can be done about this, though.
- Last weekend I also ordered an IVSO® Wireless Bluetooth Keyboard Case For Google Nexus 7 Tablet from Amazon, which then arrived already on Tuesday via DHL (quite a fast delivery considering I ordered it via Free SuperSaver Delivery option)! Some reviews on Amazon mention that it does not have a Tab key, but at least my version does, so it is quite a good match to ax86. I spent Tuesday and Wednesday evenings coding support for a Bluetooth keyboard into ax86, so now controlling games is much easier and simpler than using the on-screen virtual touch keyboard. This also meant that my improving the inbuilt touchpad keyboard went down in my TODO list priority order. :-)
- On last Thursday I then decided to order a Raspberry Pi computer, as I have been toying with the idea of porting DSx86 to it as well as to Android. It arrived on Friday, and I could not resist the temptation to start working on it immediately. Thus I began to experiment with porting my current ax86 version to it. The Friday evening was spent in an attempt to create my own Makefile system to compile ax86 (or rpix86 as I decided to call it), but after miserable failures and considerable frustration (it turns out I am really NOT a Makefile guru!) I decided to copy the Makefile system from Nintendo DS DevKitARM pretty much as-is, as it seems to work nicely and I am familiar with it. Using that I got practically all the code to compile on Friday, but the hardware-specific stuff was still missing, so it did not actually run yet.
I continued this work on Saturday, and finally by Saturday evening I was able to get 4DOS to start up inside rpix86 on Raspberry Pi! I still don't have any input (like keyboard) support on the Raspberry Pi side, so I just adedd a frame counter that exits the program after a few seconds, but still it was nice to see that I can use pretty much the same code for both Android and Raspberry Pi. From now on I think I will work on those two versions side by side, as I added some compile defines to places where I need to do things differently between those two, and most of those places are in a single source code module which contains the native interface.
It also looks like I will be able to do some development things (like using a cycle counter to help me optimize some routines) more easily on the Raspberry Pi than on Android. Eventually I will probably want to add some processor-specific optimizations to my code, so that will cause differences between the versions (since RPi has ARMv6 and modern Android devices have ARMv7 processors), but for now I can work on both at the same time.
Next I will probably spend some more time on the Raspberry Pi side to get it at the same level with the Android version (namely to get keyboard and AdLib support working), after that I need to add mouse support and floating point support to both, as those are the things that currently limit the number of games I can test on ax86/rpix86. Then I will need to add SoundBlaster digital audio support, implement the missing graphics features, and so on, so there is still quite a bit of work ahead before the eventual public release.

Whenever one of the big console manufacturers comes up with a new design idea, you can bet your bottom dollar that a Chinese clone will appear shortly afterwards. Just as the PlayStation Vita was shamelessly copied by the catastrophically poor Droid X360, the Nintendo Wii U GamePad has been shamelessly ripped off by Shenzhen-based JXD.The result is the S7300 Gamepad 2, an Android 4.1-powered 7-inch tablet device running an ARM-based Amlogic 1.5GHz chipset, packed with 8GB of internal storage and - most importantly - armed with an array of dedicated gaming controls which make the product look like the Wii U GamePad's slightly thinner cousin.JXD isn't the first company to hit upon the idea of physical gaming inputs on an Android device, of course - Sony Ericsson's Xperia Play was the early trend-setter, and since then we've also seen the disappointing Archos GamePad and the aforementioned Droid X360, while JXD itself seems to have an entire range of its own Vita/PSP knock-offs. The undesirable reputation of Chinese hardware may lead you to assume the worst, but amazingly the S7300 is a long way off being a complete disaster - although it does comes with a few unfortunate shortcomings which sully the experience ever so slightly. From the front, the S7300 certainly looks awfully similar to Nintendo's revolutionary controller. The arrangement of the buttons is practically identical, but the larger 7-inch screen (which is capacitive rather than resistive) is a welcome change. Around the edge of the unit there's a faux-metal plastic strip, calling to mind the white iPhone 4. The back of the device is practically flat, and eschews the ergonomic bulges present on the Wii U GamePad - something which ensures that the S7300 remains as portable as possible. Overall, build quality is pleasing - everything is fashioned out of plastic as you might expect, but aside from a little movement on the front of the tablet, nothing feels as if it's going to fall apart.

"It has been over six years since Apple introduced the iPhone. Millions of apps have been written for the platform in that time, with collective downloads into the billions. Apple's App Store is a thriving marketplace with a huge amount of software available, except Microsoft Office. There's a version of Office for iOS supposedly in the works, but Microsoft CEO Steve Ballmer threw cold water on the idea when asked about upcoming events for the Office suite after launching the new Office 2013 / Office 365 products earlier this week. Revenue sharing is reportedly a major sticking point. Microsoft is trying to push people towards yearly subscriptions with Office 2013 and Office 365, but Apple requires a 30 percent profit share on sales of any app in their store. Microsoft reportedly isn't thrilled at the idea of sharing that much revenue. It's ironic — when Bill Gates agreed to port Office to the Mac nearly 20 years ago, it was seen as a lifeline for the beleaguered manufacturer. Now, Microsoft is knocking on the door of Apple's business and Cupertino seems disinclined to answer."
