Apple was recently attacked by hackers who infected the Macintosh computers of some employees, the company said on Tuesday in an unprecedented disclosure that described the widest known cyber attacks against Apple-made computers to date, Reuters reports. 'The same software, which infected Macs by exploiting a flaw in a version of Oracle Corp's Java software used as a plug-in on Web browsers, was used to launch attacks against Facebook, which the social network disclosed on Friday. ... A person briefed on the investigation into the attacks said that hundreds of companies, including defense contractors, had been infected with the same malicious software, or malware. The attacks mark the highest-profile cyber attacks to date on businesses running Mac computers.'

Free-to-play title Puzzle & Dragons estimated to have generated around $65 million during January
Japanese developer and publisher GungHo Online Entertainment is estimated to be earning around $2 million a day from just one free-to-play mobile game.
As reported by Japanese industry consultantSerkan Toto, puzzle and RPG hybrid title Puzzle & Dragons is thought to have generated around $65 million in sales on iOS and Android in Japan last month.
Players are tasked with collecting monsters, exploring dungeons and battling enemies by sliding and connecting three orbs across the screen.
The title has been out since last February on iOS and last September on Android in Japan, the title was also released in the US and Europe in November.
It is believed most of the game's success is derived from the Japanese market, having dominated the charts in Japan on both the App Store and Google Play.

YouGov survey shows significant increase in customer advocacy and loyalty.
Nokia certainly appears to be making significant strides in rebuilding its reputation, after a YouGov survey conducted between September and December 2012 found that the number of its consumers that would recommend the brand grew by 13 per cent to 45 per cent.
During the same period, the Finnish manufacturer’s detractors dropped from 37 per cent to 33 per cent.
Despite its market share falling from a high of 30 per cent back in December 2009 to just six per cent in September 2012, the number of Nokia customers using its Lumia smartphone has leaped from just one per cent to 40 per cent since December 2011. The same period also saw the number of those using the Symbian operating system fall from 99 per cent to 60 per cent.
The growing uptake for Lumia devices among Nokia’s consumers has led to a substantial rise in its customer satisfaction ratings. This increased level of satisfaction spans across the entire range of the Lumia’s attributes, such as battery life and camera quality, through to Internet connection speeds, reliability and ease of use.
Meanwhile, the launch of the Lumia on Windows Phone 7 and 8 in the run-up to Christmas saw Nokia achieve the biggest improvement in customer loyalty among handset manufacturers. The number of Nokia customers saying that they would stay with the brand for their next handset grew by 12 per cent to 42 per cent between September and December 2012.
However, YouGov’s survey revealed Apple continues to boast the highest loyalty ratings, with 80 per cent of its consumers claiming that they would stick with the brand for their next smartphone.

Taiwanese manufacturer looks to reclaim lost market share with new Android device.
HTC has today (February 19th) unveiled its new flagship smartphone in the form of the HTC One, as the Taiwanese firm launches its bid to win back its lost market share.
Running on the latest Android Jelly Bean OS, the HTC One is made entirely out of aluminium and features a 4.7-inch 1080p high display. It also introduces three new HTC Sense innovations – HTC BlinkFeed, HTC Zoe and HTC BoomSound.
The HTC BlinkFeed feature is designed to turn the home screen into a live stream of user-relevant information, such as social updates, news and photos, meaning that users will no longer have to open separate apps to keep abreast of what’s going on.
Meanwhile, the HTC Zoe function comes as part of the HTC UltraPixel Camera. This feature allows the user to capture three-second video clips from which they can select the best still image.
Furthermore, HTC Zoe can also transform a series of still images into short movies, which can be set to a variety of different themes and shared on social media and email.
Designed to offer optimised audio, the HTC BoomSound feature represents something of a smartphone first, with front-facing stereo speakers, a dedicated amplifier and a full HD display aimed at delivering optimised audio when listening to music, playing games or watching videos.
Elsewhere, the HTC One offers the latest LTE technology and is available in silver and black versions.
“People today immerse themselves in a constant stream of updates, news and information. Although smartphones are one of the main ways we stay in touch with the people and information we care about, conventional designs have failed to keep pace with how people are actually using them,” said Peter Chou, CEO of HTC Corporation. “A new, exciting approach to the smartphone is needed and with the new HTC One, we have re-imagined the mobile experience from the ground up to reflect this new reality.”
The HTC One will be available globally through more than 185 mobile operators and major retailers in more than 80 regions and countries, beginning in March. For more information and to pre-register for the new HTC One, visit www.htc.com.

Kill Screen wanted to jumpstart OUYA game development with its Create Game Jam, and it turns out that there were more than a few takers -- 165, to be exact. That makes the grand prize winner, FreeLives' Strange Happenings on Murder Island, something special. Thetop-down action game's dinosaur rampages and Minecraft-like art were wild enough to earn the developer $20,000 and a head start in what's increasingly becoming a crowded field. Other developers weren't entirely left out, as winners in specialized categories still received $5,000 each. There's no guarantee that the results of Create will resonate with gamers in the long run; if they lead to a better selection for an untested console, though, they'll have been worth the effort.

Pussy Flip is no more, having undergone a name change.
UK casual game outfit Kwalee has renamed its puzzle title Pussy Flip to the altogether less risqué Flip the Cats. It was worried that some of its international audience might have kittens when confronted with the name.
The official line is that the new moniker “will work better in global markets and better describes what the game is about”.
The move comes as the game is expanded to offer a number of new languages – French, German, Italian, Japanese, Korean, Spanish, Russian, Turkish, Simplified Chinese, Thai, Greek and Portuguese.
The game is now available to download for free complete with its new name on the Apple App Store, including a brand new update bringing a host of new features to the title.

The Apple Shop, in Norfolk, UK is a little corner store that sells apple products. Not Apple products, but apple products, in this case, cider. However, it's been forced to change its name to the Norfolk Cider Shop. However, the name change did not come from any lawsuit from Apple (the Cupertino one, that is), nor has there been any evidence that Apple (Cupertino) knew about them. Instead, they're changing their name because their phones have been ringing constantly from people seeking help with their Apple (Cupertino) products. Apple (Cupertino) opened an Apple store in 2009 in the nearby (larger) town of Norwich.

It's a rite of passage of sorts -- Apple's "skinny" iMac has nowspent enough time on Earth to be deemed an appropriate addition to the company's refurb ranks. The base late-2012 configuration, which sports a 21.5-inch 1080p IPS screen, a 2.7GHz quad-core Intel Core i5 processor, 8 gigs of RAM, a 1TB hard drive and that new super-svelte housing can now be had at a $200 discount, priced at $1,099. As with many Apple refurbished products, you likely won't be the device's very first owner, but it will arrive in tip-top condition, with a one-year warranty to boot. As always, "supplies are limited," so if you don't mind having a second-hand system on your desk, in exchange for a slightly thicker wallet, you best make your way over to the source link to snag your very own discounted machine today.

This is a simple project. It uses an Android device to switch an LED driven by the Arduino. Connectivity is provided by the Bluetooth module inserted in the breadboard. But one look at the UI on the Android device and you might think this is anything but simple. The truth is that [Kerimil] didn’t spend forever learning Java and programming the app. Instead he’s showing off the power of App Inventor to get your Android controls up and running fast.
Check out the third button down; when was the last time you added voice commands to your project? It’s worth clicking through to see just how simple that portion was. App Inventor — a Google cast-out that is now maintained by MIT — is a graphical tool that unlocks the power of an Android handset to those with the most basic of programming understanding. For instance, the voice controls shown off after the break are provided by a single bracket which uses conditional statements to â€listen’ for the words on, off, and blink. You’ll find the voice recognition diagram after the break as well.
You could try to go completely graphical with this project. There’s the option ofprogramming the Arduino side of the project in a similar way.

Microsoft is leaving billions of dollars on the table by not porting Office to the iPad, according to a new analyst report. That analyst, Morgan Stanley's Adam Holt, believes that Office for iOS would sell to approximately 30 percent of all iPad users; priced at $60 per copy, that comes to a grand total of $2.5 billion per year — minus Apple's cut of the revenues, of course. But does Microsoft actually want Office for iOS out there? It's not necessarily in the company's best interest to rush such a platform to market, even if billions of dollars potentially hang in the balance — it's too busy pushing Office as a cloud-based, OS-agnostic platform. And Microsoft has another reason, aside from pushing the cloud version of Office, to de-emphasize the prospect of its productivity software on iOS: In a bid to draw more customers to its new hardware, Microsoft preloaded its Surface RT tablets with Office; offering the software on a rival touch-screen would take a major selling point off the table.

A new report from IDC reveals that Android and iOS combined for 91.1 per cent of all smartphone shipments in Q4 2012.
Last year over 497 million Android phones were shipped, an increase of over 100 per cent on 2011. Apple managed to shift 135.9 million handsets.
"The dominance of Android and Apple reached a new watermark in the fourth quarter," said Ramon Llamas, research manager with IDC's Mobile Phone team. "Android boasted a broad selection of smartphones, and an equally deep list of smartphone vendor partners. Finding an Android smartphone for nearly any budget, taste, size, and price was all but guaranteed during 2012. As a result, Android was rewarded with market-beating growth."
"Likewise, demand for Apple's iPhone 5 kept iOS out in front and in the hands of many smartphone users," added Llamas. "At the same time, lower prices on the iPhone 4 and the iPhone 4S brought iOS within reach of more users and sustained volume success of older models. Even with the Apple Maps debacle, iPhone owners were not deterred from purchasing new iPhones."
So can Microsoft and BlackBerry realistically make any sort of impact on these two OS giants? IDC’s Ryan Reith believes people do actually want diversity, but it’s not going to be easy to make a dent: "There is no question the road ahead is uphill for both Microsoft and BlackBerry, but history shows us consumers are open to change. Platform diversity is something not only the consumers have asked for, but also the operators."

You can sometimes gauge a game console's short-term success based on its launch lineup; many of us know the pain of having to choose the least terrible game of a small bunch while we're waiting for a better selection. While we can't vouch for how the OUYA will fare for quality, Eddie at OUYA Forumhas done the legwork to prove that there won't be any problems with the Android console's quantity. He's checked with both OUYA and developers to confirm that there are at least 481 games headed to the fledgling system, as of this writing. The clear majority of these are smaller indie titles that won't dampen Sony's enthusiasm for next week, but that's not necessarily a problem -- the abundance mostly hints that there could be a few gems for early adopters, even if there's a lot of fluff.

Claims it's going to snatch a 'bigger piece of the smartphone market pie'.
Opera has crossed the 300 million monthly user milestone, inclusive of all browsers across mobile phones, tablets, TVs, and PCs. It comes following last month'spartnership with Neomobile to introduce one-click operator billing to Opera Mini.
The browser firm says it will continue focusing on mobile and aims to become a leading service for Android and iOS, which will be achieved by moving to the open source WebKit engine that's currently used by its Apple and Google competitors.
Lars Boilesen, CEO of Opera Software, said: "300 million marks the first lap, but the race goes on. On the final stretch up to 300 million users, we have experienced the fastest acceleration in user growth we have ever seen. Now, we are shifting into the next gear to claim a bigger piece of the pie in the smartphone market."
HĂĄkon Wium Lie, CTO of Opera Software, added: "The WebKit engine is already very good, and we aim to take part in making it even better. It supports the standards we care about, and it has the performance we need. It makes more sense to have our experts working with the open source communities to further improve WebKit and Chromium, rather than developing our own rendering engine further."
The 300m user base is up from reaching 200m back in July.
