Analyst Context has revealed that RIM’s BlackBerry PlayBook tablet has outsold Apple’s latest iPad model in the UK’s IT distribution channel.
More than 802,000 tablets were sold in November and December, with Apple accounting for just a quarter of the market.
"Sub-£300 devices accounted for 76 per cent of shipments," said Context mobile guru Salman Chaudhry. "A year ago it was 43 per cent. There has been a complete shift in the channel.
"It's a price-driven market, but never was before. The quality of many tablets is as good as the iPad but half the price, and they have a decent software ecosystem too. It's come a long way in a year."
Context’s report says that RIM shifted 160,000 PlayBook’s in the last two months of 2012, with Apple’s fourth-gen iPad selling 113,000 units.
The Nexus 7 was in third place, selling 105,000 and following that was Samsung’s Galaxy Tab 2 10.1-inch device, which shifted 85,000 units.
