Despite the recent launch of the Z10, and the upcoming debut of the Q10, BlackBerry's CEO has confirmed that another new device is on the way in 2013.
Talking to CNET, Thorsten Heins stated that a new flagship device for Blackberry was on the way; one that the firm's CEO is "very excited about."
"There's one new product I'm really excited about, but I can't really share it," said Heins, "It takes BlackBerry 10 to another level in terms of the user experience."
Whilst expected towards the end of 2013, Heins wouldn't guarantee a release for the device this side of the New Year. Heins also hinted that an additional BlackBerry device should be expected by mid-2013.
The news comes as the firm released its Z10 handset in the US today, whilst also celebrating the 100,000 milestone for the firm's app store, which users can now browse and download from.
BlackBerry also reports that in just seven weeks, the store added over 30,000 apps to its available catalogue.
With the Z10 already on sale, and rumours swirling over the firm's yet to be announced devices, the Q10 handset, which was revealed simultaneously with the Z10, has yet to make an appearance. However, as consumers await the device's release, the handset finally received an unlocked price tag of £529.98.
The firm has somewhat fallen behind in the smartphone game as of late, trailing to the likes of Samsung and Apple, whom have both released yearly updates to their flagship Galaxy and iPhone ranges.
With Samsung having lifted the lid on its Galaxy S4, whilst Apple readies its new iPhone device later this year, it seems that BlackBerry is making up for lost time in attempt to catch up by releasing a bevy of its own new devices.

Slated for release in April, Sony has begun accepting pre-orders for its Xperia Tablet Z device.
Available now from Sony's online store, the 16GB Wi-Fi only edition of the new tablet is available for £399, whilst consumers can bump up to the 32GB version for £449.
The site also details the 16GB LTE equipped edition of the Xperia Tablet Z. However, the model lacks any form of pricing or release date information, indicating the device will be offered later in the year.
Sony has stated that it will work to ship all of the pre-ordered devices by April 15th, which remains the only release information released by the firm.
O2 has too begun listing the device in its own online store, with potential buyers able to purchase the device as part of a contract. However, O2 remains tight-lipped on both pricing and release date information for the tablet.
Initially showcased at this year's Mobile World Congress show in Barcelona, the Xperia Tablet Z tablet boasts a 1.5GHz quad-core processor and Android's 4.1 operating system – which will be updateable to 4.2 following the device's release, says Sony.
The device also incorporated a 8.1MP rear-facing camera, 2MP front-facing camera and a 10.1-inch retina display.

Thankfully, Google Chairman Eric Schmidt has announced that 'Android and Chrome will remain separate.' Rumors that the products would be combined emerged last week when leadership of Android and Chrome were consolidated under Google Senior Vice President Sundar Pichai. Schmidt stated the obvious, but if you are a developer and you took the bait and thought the rumors might be true, you already read enough of Google Chrome or Google Android documentation before Schmidt's clarification and confirmed that consolidating the two products would be, well, stupid

Apple has been weaning app developers away from UDID and its privacy concerns formore than a year, but it looks like the company's about to put its foot down -- and up the hardware support requirements in the process. As of May 1st, the company will stop accepting new app submissions that demand a UDID to single out individual devices; creators will have to use the ad and vendor identifiers that came with iOS 6. They'll also have to develop apps for Retina displays as a matter of course, including the talleriPhone 5 screen. We can't imagine that the news will please those who have a need for legacy UDID support, or can't easily update a long-serving app for Retina screens, but Apple clearly feels it's time to move on.

At October's Windows Phone 8 launch event, Microsoft's Joe Belfiore stood on stage and eagerly announced a laundry list of popular apps that were confirmed to be coming to the platform in the coming months. To the delight of many, Pandora was on the list -- and to top it all off, the music streaming service would come ad-free for the first year. The question then shifted to when it would actually make it to the Windows Phone Store, and we finally have an answer: today.
The free app will take advantage of a Live Tile in all three possible sizes, the two largest showing which song is currently playing, along with its album cover art. Pandora's arrival also marks another milestone: not only will it be available on Kids Corner, it's also the first app capable of automatically filtering out explicit content when the feature is activated. The service will only be available for Windows Phone 8 devices, but anyone accessing Pandora through alternate apps on Windows Phone 7.x can continue to do so.

One way to protect a delicate device like a smartphone is to wrap it in layers of shock-absorbing rubber and plastic. Now, that can mean a case or you can simply build the handset out of those materials in the first place. Obviously, Apple is kind of attached to the premium feel of glass and metal, so the company is proposing another solution. A patent application discovered today suggests using a mechanism to shift the center of gravity or orientation of a device if sensors on board indicate it is falling.
The sensors in question are pretty standard fare: accelerometers, gyroscopes, etc... but some of the countermeasures are quite unique. Shifting weights could be hidden under the hood, but other proposals include a locking headphone jack that would prevent the phone from hitting the ground, airfoils and even a reserve of gas for thrust. Many of the solutions are more than just a little impractical, especially when trying to design the sleekest smartphone possible. The concept could also be used in laptops and tablets, but it would certainly be most useful in shatter-prone mobile devices like the iPhone. If you really like digging through patent minutia check out the source link.

It's been a strong selling point from Google for security-minded users, and now Apple has finally come on board with a two-step verification process for Apple ID and iCloud users. Not surprisingly, the system works much the same as with Google and others: you first need to enable it on the Apple ID website, then you can use your mobile device to receive verification codes as needed (either via text message or the Find my iPhone app) to sign into various Apple services. You can also stash a recovery key away in the event you lose or are locked out of your phone.
In our testing, it appears that the functionality is slowly rolling out to US-based users, but in practice, the changes aren't actually sticking. We're hitting plenty of time-outs, and even after registering a device, we're noticing that the verifications aren't sticking within the Apple ID account. If you're running into issues, you may want to just wait as Apple irons out the kinks.

Based on the latest reports, the company once chided for making too large an impacton Mother Earth is now claiming that a full 75 percent of its energy is being sourced from renewables. Apple's chief financial officer, Peter Oppenheimer, informed Reutersthis week that all of its data centers -- including the gargantuan facility in Maiden, North Carolina -- are now fully powered by renewable energy from onsite and local sources, while three-fourths of the energy used by the whole company is pulled from green sources. For those wondering, that includes solar, wind, hydro and geothermal, and the 75 percent mark is a stark 40 percent uptick from just two years ago. As for what the future holds? According to Apple: "We won't stop working until we achieve 100 percent throughout Apple." Alrighty then.

"Nothing says fun like a speech demo." Those are the words of Microsoft's CTSO Eric Rudder, not ours -- although we do have to agree. As you'll see for yourself in the video after the break, Microsoft held a private event for its employees a few weeks ago showcasing some of the advancements it's achieved with Bing's voice search for Windows Phone. Thanks to the work of MS' Research arm and the folks at Advanced Technology Group, voice recognition accuracy on a prototype build has now been improved by up to 15-percent on the back end and should even see a further 10- to 15-percent performance boost. In addition to this decreased error rate, the team's also greatly enhanced the speed at which the app delivers relevant results. So when can you expect this new and improved Bing app for WP? That part's unclear, but it appears Microsoft's already implementing changes on the back end to bolster current use.

New research from PlaySpan and Magid points to some interesting data on consoles, mobile and free-to-play
The mobile gaming world has exploded in the last few years, and with the rise of free-to-play games and cheap apps people may be giving less attention to consoles. Whether or not the rapid mobile adoption will take away from consoles in the long-term remains to be seen, but according to new research from Frank N. Magid Associates and Visa-owned PlaySpan, at the very least, more and more gamers in America view the smartphone as their preferred platform of choice.
According to Magid's online survey conducted in December, roughly 80 percent of all consumers in the US are now gamers, and the research firm attributes the growth in the gaming population to the increase in smartphone ownership. The survey found that 35 percent of respondents said consoles were their top gaming platform, but right there with consoles were smartphones, as 34 percent said that mobile was their preferred platform to game on. This was followed by tablets at 11 percent and computers at six percent. Dedicated handhelds like the 3DS or PS Vita barely got any attention at three percent.
Interestingly, the real discrepancy here is one of gender. Smartphones may have caught up overall, but for males consoles are far and away the top platform still. 49 percent of men said they prefer consoles, compared to 18 percent of women, while 45 percent of women said they prefer smartphones compared to 25 percent of men.
One of the big allures of mobile is free-to-play, and in fact, Magid found that 110 million Americans prefer free-to-play than pay-to-play (77 percent of gamers are spending more time with free-to-play). And the gender differences once again were pretty significant, especially in terms of how gamers spend money.
Importantly for publishers and developers looking to optimize their games, the study found men were nearly three times more likely than women to cite pay-to-play or subscription based games as their favorite. Furthermore, among individuals playing free-to-play titles, men were three times more likely than women to make in-game purchases, averaging $13.38 and $4.84 per month, respectively. The most lucrative demographic was the 18-24 age group where men were paying an average of $30.59 a month on in-game purchases.
"The shift in free-to-play games is becoming the norm in the gaming industry and this survey reinforces that trend," said Robert Crawford, vice president of Frank N. Magid Associates. "We're seeing free-to-play game revenue outpacing pay-to-play games when looking at the long-term average spend per year. It's important that game developers recognize this change and be able to monetize it through new free-to-play gaming platforms."

Marmalade Juice promises to replace the need for traditional porting from Apple portable platforms
Game tech outfit Marmalade has today released iOS porting tool Juice.
The middleware promises to break down the barriers that face developers looking to port their iOS projects to Android and other platforms. It does so by letting games makers recompile Objective-C and native OS APIs, formerly only usable on iOS and Mac, all within the Marmalade SDK.
Converted apps can subsequently be deployed directly to Android, as well as many other Marmalade-supported platforms such as BlackBerry, Mac, and a number of smart TVs.
Developer's optimisations for each target platform can, with Marmalade Juice, be made within the existing Objective-C codebase, while source-level debugging with the Marmalade simulator is also supported.
“With our mantra of ‘More Platforms, More Possibilities’ we were frustrated by how many great games are locked exclusively into the iOS ecosystem," said Harvey Elliott, MD and COO of Marmalade. "Historically, porting games from iOS to other platforms has involved a large amount of resource-heavy recoding from Objective-C to other languages. Marmalade Juice entirely removes this stage, making it more cost-effective for developers to reach even more consumers.”

New technology to break down barriers for iOS developers.
Cross-platform development tool Marmalade is set to replace the need to port iOS games to Android and other platforms with the launch of Marmalade Juice.
The Marmalade Juice technology is designed to break down barriers for iOS developers looking to target other ecosystems by allowing them to recompile Objective-C and native OS APIs, formerly only usable on iOS and Mac within the Marmalade SDK.
Apps can then be deployed directly to Android, along with a host of other Marmalade-supported platforms, including BlackBerry, Mac, desktop and selected smart TVs.
Furthermore, optimisations for the target platforms can be made within the original Objective-C codebase, and source-level debugging with the Marmalade simulator is also supported.
This new cross-platform SDK is the only one of its kind for taking Objective-C to multiple other platforms, including Android. By using Marmalade Juice’s technology, existing apps on iOS can be brought quickly to a vast range of additional devices.
The SDK has already been put to the test by delivering the iOS game Tap Paradise Cove (Pocket Gems) to Google Play and the Amazon Appstore. Written entirely in Objective-C, the Android version was created using Marmalade Juice without requiring a difficult code porting exercise. iOS API calls remained intact and Xcode UI files were able to adapt to address Android screen resolutions.
Arjun Dayal, Android Product Lead, Pocket Gems, said: “Tap Paradise Cove is already a major hit on iOS, so the opportunity through Marmalade Juice to deploy to additional platforms without rewriting the game was extremely valuable to us. Since launch, we have reached over 1 million additional players on Google Play and Amazon Appstore.”
Harvey Elliott, MD and COO, Marmalade, added: “With our mantra of ‘More Platforms, More Possibilities’ we were frustrated by how many great games are locked exclusively into the iOS ecosystem. Historically, porting games from iOS to other platforms has involved a large amount of resource-heavy recoding from Objective-C to other languages. Marmalade Juice entirely removes this stage, making it more cost-effective for developers to reach even more consumers.”

HP Labs has been developing a new kind of 3D display that plays hologram-like videos and images without the need for moving parts or glasses.
Viewers can walk around the videos and images, which hover just above the screen, and experience them from as many as 200 different viewpoints.
This new screen is made by modifying a conventional LCD, the same kind of display found in most smartphones, tablets, laptops and televisions. Researchers at HP Labs believe these 3D systems could enable new kinds of user interfaces for portable electronic devices.
The display uses nanopatterned grooves, which HP researcher David Fattal, who led the work, calls ‘directional pixels’. Theses pixels send light off in different directions meaning no new moving parts are required. This also means the patterns are built into the backlight of an existing display component.
Leading up to the announcement of the iPhone 5 last year, there was a host of rumours revolving around holograms and laser keyboards, in fact someone even made a mock iPhone 5 advert showing the made up tech. It was so well done that Fox 5 News reported it as fact. D’oh.

Renowned game designer Ron Gilbert has released details and screenshots of his first game since quitting developer Double Fine earlier this month. The Monkey Island creator has teamed up with Clayton Kauzlaric, co-creator of DeathSpank, to construct a "musical Match-3 pirate RPG" called Scurvy Scallywags in The Voyage to Discover the Ultimate Sea Shanty. The puzzle RPG is in development for iPhone, iPad and the pair "might" also create an Android port, Gilbert wrote on his blog. The designer behind The Cave said he's wanted to create a match-3 RPG game for a few years, but publishers indicated little demand for the genre."Of course, a year later Puzzle Quest comes out and sells a billion copies," Gilbert notes. He goes on to explain how his own interpretation of the Bejewelled formula will work in Sea Shanty:"Unlike Puzzle Quest - and just about every other match-3 RPG that sprang up after it - in Scurvy Scallywags you actually move your hero/pirate around the board and position her/him next to enemies to do battle. It creates this new layer to the matching that is a lot of fun."We have close to one hundred different hats, shirts, heads, swords, etc you find and use to dress up your pirate. There are also ten different ships to build, plus a sea shanty you collect that is sung by real life pirate singers (they work for grog, quite inexpensive)."Gilbert says that "with any luck" Scurvy Scallywags will release within "the next month or so."

The Google Keep note taking service that leaked out a few days ago has officially launched. There's a website and an Android app for now, and a post on the Google Drive blog it's intended for users to quickly jot down ideas. They're saved on Google Drive -- which probably explains why this exists instead of the axed Google Notebook service -- and on Android 4.2.2 there's a lock screen widget available for even easier access. Check after the break for a trailer explaining the new service's features, or just hit the links below to try it out for yourself to see if it can best alternatives likeEvernote. That is, is if you can get in. While it was working for us initially, many are seeing "error encountered" messages now as the masses flood the service.
