Interesting timing, AT&T: just a day after the HTC One pricing was announced, the carrier has clarified its launch plans for the Samsung Galaxy S 4. We already knew the phone would be available on pre-order for $250 on April 16th, but AT&T has now specified that this will be for the 32GB model; the 16GB flavor will actually be $200, both with two-year commitments. This certainly doesn't help HTC's hopes of conquering the world, though the $200 One will hold twice as much internal storage as the GS 4 (although Samsung's flagship at least offers expandable memory, whereas the One does not). AT&T still hasn't announced an official release date, so that's the last remaining piece of the puzzle yet to be revealed.

Most modern gaming consoles are big, heavy and power-thirsty. They dominate the entertainment centers into which they're placed and suck down hundreds of watts of electricity when they're running. They've evolved this way, growing larger and more powerful to deliver better graphics and more comprehensive gameplay experiences. So too have their talents expanded. It's no longer good enough for a gaming console to simply play games: modern systems have to be complete home entertainment devices.
Or do they? When the OUYA was announced in July of 2012, its $99 cost was low and its processing power as simple as its premise: a tiny little box designed to be a haven for those who want to play (or develop) good, original games. Many gamers connected with this idea immediately, helping to drive the system to an $8 million run on Kickstarter. Plenty of others didn't, saying this would be just a cheap distraction on which to play mediocre Android games. The truth, as it turns out, lies somewhere in between.

It's been quite a few months since Microsoft touched the SkyDrive application on Apple's mobile platform, but today, after some well-documented delays, the company's finally delivering an update to its iOS offering -- a pretty hefty one, no less. Included in this new version is, most notably, added support for the iPhone 5 and iPad mini, while a refreshed overall user experience, new app icons and enhanced saving options are also in tow with this release. In addition to these tidbits, SkyDrive will now allow iDevice users to easily grab their full-res photos from within the app, as well as determine the size of uploaded and downloaded picture files. Better yet, the long-overdue update just went live in the App Store, so it's about that time for Redmond's cloud surfers to savor what they'd been patiently waiting for.

Mozilla and Samsung on Wednesday announced a new partnership to build a 'next generation' web browser engine called Servo. The ultimate goal is to bring the technology to Android and ARM, though the two companies have not shared a timeframe for a possible launch. With the help of Samsung, Mozilla is bringing both the Rust programming language as well as Servo to Android and ARM. Samsung's contribution so far has been an ARM backend to Rust as well as the build infrastructure necessary to cross-compile to Android. In fact, the code is available now on GitHub, as is the source for Rust and Servo."For those unfamiliar, Rust is Mozilla's new safe systems programming language (kind of like BitC), and Servo is their general project to write a brand new engine using Rust. Rust has an interesting memory model that eliminates much difficulty in reasoning about threaded programs. If you know what you're doing, they claim you cancross compile the code for Android, but no functionality guarantees have been made.

The angry whining of teens on the internet should not be mistaken for actual, real-world opinion.
That much is certainly true. Whether it can be applied to arguments surrounding free-to-play gaming is probably slightly more debatable.
There’s no confusion as to which side of the fence EA sits on, however. EA All Play senior VP Nick Earl says that there’s no disputing free-to-play’s victory in the modern games market.
"The market has spoken very loudly that that's the model they like," Earl told GamesIndustry. "Even though there's some vocal minority that don't like it, ultimately the numbers would show that they and others all support the freemium model better.
"At the end of the day you kind of have to look at real numbers. The old proverb, 'You can't please all the people all the time' is just so true."
The comments reiterated Earl’s statements last month following the release of Real Racing 3.
The iOS title shunned an upfront free in favour of going free-to-play. The move was decried by the Angry Internet Men, although the game went on to become the most downloaded title in the series.
"There's no question that going freemium was the right way to go," he said at the time. "The vocal minority lashed out at freemium. We respect them and understand, but the market has spoken. That's just where things are going."

Mozilla on Tuesday officially launched Firefox 20 for Windows, Mac, Linux, and Android. The improvements include per-window private browsing, a new download manager in the Firefox toolbar, and the ability to close hanging plugins without the browser hanging. The new desktop version was available as of yesterday on the organization's FTP servers, but that was just the initial release of the installers. Firefox 20 has now officially been made available over on Firefox.com and all users of old Firefox versions should be able to upgrade to it automatically. As always, the Android version is trickling out slowly on the official Google Play Store. The changelogs are here: desktop and Android."

Intel Developer Blog: Softtalkblog recommends tools and resources for porting apps
If you already have an app that you’ve developed for iOS, there are several good reasons to port it to Windows 8.
If your app is paid-for, a presence on more platforms enables you to tap into more markets, and also enables you to block any competitors who might move in on platforms you’ve overlooked.
If your app is free, a presence across multiple platforms means you can build up brand awareness, loyalty and stickiness across more platforms. Apps that use cloud-based data or synchronisation can benefit in particular from cross-platform availability, because they enable users to switch between the devices they own at any time, and continue their work or play seamlessly.
There are lots of ways to distribute Windows 8 apps, including through the Windows Store and through the Intel AppUp Center.
Porting apps from iOS to Windows 8 has its challenges, though. Here are some resources that can help you meet them:

It's a 'Boots to Asses style app'. Get ready to lay the smack down.
Dwayne 'The Rock' Johnson goes by many names; The People's Champion, The Brahma Bull, The Great One, and The Most Electrifying Man in Sports Entertainment, to name but a few, so it seems about time he joined the app world.
The wrestler-cum-Hollywood film star has teamed with WWE for the launch of 3D action mobile game, WWE Presents: Rockpocalyspe. The player, of course, steps into the shoes of the 6'5 man mountain, while the game takes place on a movie set.
Sounds pretty glamourous, right? Not quite. The Rock finds that his crew and cast members have been infected with a disease that gives them violent tendencies, which prompts him to lay the smack down and unravel the cause of the outbreak.
Perkins Miller, EVP of digital media for WWE, said: "This is WWE’s first ‘action strategy’ game and we’re thrilled that WWE Champion The Rock is right at the center of it. Our fans have come to expect compelling content from WWE on every platform and this high energy game with customisable experiences will once again deliver."
Johnson, said: "I am excited to partner with WWE and some of the best game developers in the world to bring something cool for fans to play. Boots to Asses style app…this will be fun!"

Cupertino is rumoured to be finalising plans to begin production of the iPhone 5S, the newest addition to Apple's flagship smartphone range.
The Wall Street Journal reports that Apple is begin work on a new device, which would likely be a refreshed model of the current iPhone 5, similar in both size and shape.
Whilst it's no secret that Apple is working on the next iPhone behind the scenes, the firm is traditionally remaining tight-lipped over the device.
However, this latest report indicates that the next iPhone could appear by as early as this summer.
The timing would make sense as Apple will no doubt be looking to compete with Samsung's recently released Galaxy S 4 with a device of its own.
A mid-year release of the iPhone 5S would also pave the way for the long-rumoured budget iPhone to make an appearance towards the end of the year.
Despite initially dismissing the claims, Apple is reportedly working closely with Asian manufacturing partners on a budget iPhone, which is likely to appear in the second half of the year.
Whilst little is known of the device as of right now, the budget iPhone is widely believed to feature a four-inch screen and a different casting from other iPhones, which would work to reduce costs and offer a variety of coloured shells.

Forty years ago today, inventor and pioneer Martin Cooper called a competitor, stating, "I'm calling you from a cell phone, a real handheld portable cell phone."
This first call was on a Motorola DynaTAC device - capable of a mere 35 minutes of talktime at most.
On April 3rd, 1973 Motorola held a press conference in New York to show off the first mobile phone call, giving Cooper a fantastic opportunity to ring competitor Dr Joel S Engel, head of Bell Labs.
Since then, the mobile phone has evolved - just a little. From handhelds to folding phones to folding keyboards to touchscreens and now, essentially, mobile computers that just happen to make phone calls as well.
Happy birthday mobile phones - we expect a lot more from you in the years to come.

Alright, so Microsoft is in no danger of toppling iOS or Android anytime soon. But the analytics firm Kantar has seen significant growth for Windows Phone, largely at the expense of BlackBerry. In practically every major market WP8 has started to chip away at its competitors, growing from 6.2 percent to 6.7 percent share in the UK in justone month. Twelve months ago it was at only three percent in the country. The most dramatic ascent has taken place in Italy where it accounted for just 5.4 percent of handsets sold in February of 2012, and now makes up 13.1 percent of sales. Even in the US Windows Phone is seeing steady, if hardly eye-popping growth.
Symbian and BlackBerry are obviously the biggest losers. In Mexico, both platforms have seen double digit drops in their share of sales over the last year. While in the UK, the company formerly known as RIM has gone from a seemingly secure third place with 16.8 percent of the market to a quickly fading fourth with 5.1 percent is just 12 months. Meanwhile, Apple is sitting pretty with hardly a change to its position and Android continues its juggernaut-like assault on all markets. To see the complete global figures check out the images after the break.

We might have spent a few hours toying with Samsung's new mobile hardware, but some tinkerers over at XDA-Developers claim have had enough time to root the Galaxy S 4, already. This means those (very) early adopters might be able to peruse the inner workings as soon as it arrives on store shelves. There's a video of the process after the break and you can pick up all the necessary custom ROM files (and warnings ofnot to meddle with what you do not understand) at the source. There is one tiny caveat to the news, however, as the rooting magic is focused squarely on the Exynos 5 Octamodel for now. According to SAM Mobile, several batches of the new Galaxy phone are rumored to be packing Qualcomm's Snapdragon 600 instead of Samsung's homemade chip series. An official spokesperson from the UK branch has confirmed that it'll arrive in the there with the Snapdragon processor.
Update: Perhaps we were a little too zealous. Notable smartphone tinkerer Chainfirehas taken to Google Plus to note that this would be a pretty huge accomplishment given the limited number of handsets currently out there. Most of the XDA-Developersthread details custom ROMs, while the Galaxy S 4 apparently has a few extra tricks to slow down the rooting process. Read Chainfire's full breakdown in More Coverage. Apologies for any confusion.

We first encountered Ergo Electronics at last year's Gadget Show Live, and since then the Birmingham-based tablet maker has graduated from its humble back-of-the-hall origins to become a major player. Its product range has swelled beyond its originalbudget ICS slates with a range of AIO PCs, thin-and-light laptops and even a Windows 8 tablet that has more than a few strong hints of a KIRF Surface about it. Now it's launched the GoNote Mini, a scaled down 7-inch version of the education-ready tablet / netbook hybrid that's been doing the rounds since last summer. We got to spend a few minutes playing around with the first production prototype and if you'd like to know more, after the break is where you want to be.

It might not have the trademark, but that hasn't stopped Apple shaving the cost of its entry-level iPhone 4 and 4S' to something closer to its price tag in North America. The 16GB iPhone 4S is now R$1,699 ($840), down from R$1,999, while the 8GB flavor of the iPhone 4 now rings in at R$1,099 ($544), reduced from R$1,499. According to O Globo, if you're willing to pay upfront in full (and by phone) you can even snatch an extra 10 percent off both. Otherwise, Brazilians will need to visit the online store to lay claim to the heavily-discounted handsets.

Your current smartphone just took another spin backwards on the obsolescence cycle thanks to a new landmark from ARM and TSMC: the first Cortex-A57 has reached the "tape out" stage, meaning it's ready for mass production. The new chip will use TSMC's 16nm FinFET technology (though the transistors will be 20nm for the A57) and will bring up to three times the CPU power of current chips for the same battery life -- or a maximum of five times the battery life at the same speed. The companies said they ramped the chip from design to tape out in a mere six months, though there's no timetable for its arrival in specific devices. When it does start hitting next gen phones and slates though, expect the performance charts to get singed.

Andrew Busey-led developer releases collectible card game for iOS
The former general manager of Zynga Austin Andrew Busey has opened a new mobile studio focused on free-to-play titles.
As reported by Gamesindustry, Team Chaos’ first game will be free-to-play collectable card game Elements: Broken Lands, which has already been released on the App Store.
Busey has also teamed up with Chaotic Moon Studios to form the new studio.
"The rise of CCGs on mobile has been incredible," said Busey.
"One of our objectives in crafting Elements has been evolving the ease of use and raising the quality level of this genre on mobile. Our past experience building these types of games combined with the amazing advancement in mobile technology has allowed us to build a visually stunning game that is both accessible and deeply strategic.

Calls the Google OS its 'new home' and moves in on April 4th.
Facebook last announced an unveiling back in January, inviting press to 'come and see what we're building.' Therumour mill suggested the product was the long-expected Facebook phone or OS, but instead, we were treated to the underwhelming unmasking of Graph Search.
Well, it's a new quarter, and Facebook has again requested the presence of the industry, this time to 'come and see our new home on Android' on Thursday, April 4th.
Conjecture has churned up talk of the Facebook phone (again), an Android OS laced with Facebook functionality, and some reports have gone as far as to say that the unveiling will be in partnership with HTC, while the product tagline is 'more than just an app'.
John Strand of Strand Consult, said:0 "It doesn’t matter that the concept will be launched with an Android operating system on an HTC smartphone. If Facebook's new concept works, it will become the standard for phones and operating systems. Not only are OTT companies such as Facebook rendering mobile operators into dumb pipes, but they are making all smartphones into dumb terminals. If all users want is Facebook, then there are few ways that operators and phone manufacturers can differentiate with services or hardware.
"Facebook announcement is an important milestone for investors, for it demonstrates that the gold mine for Facebook is not advertising, operating systems or hardware. The key for Facebook is to monetize its users for the very communication it offers: SMS, voice, and data enabled services."

We’ve seen a fair number of hacks like this one that reuse a Kindle basically just for its ePaper display. [HaHaBird] has this device hanging on his refrigerator to display the weather and remind him about recycling day. It kind of make us wonder why we’re not seeing cheap ePaper modules on the hobby market?
The concept isn’t new, but [HaHaBird] does move it along just a little bit. He started by following the guide which [Matt] wrote after pulling off the original Kindle weather display hack. It uses a separate computer running a script that polls the Internet for weather data and generates a vector graphic like the one seen above. The Kindle then loads the image once every five minutes thanks to a cron job on the rooted device. But why stop there? [HaHaBird] tweaked the script to include a reminder about his municipality’s irregular recycling schedule.
Don’t overlook the quality of the hardware side of this hack. With its prominent place in the kitchen he wanted a nicely finished look. This was achieved by building a frame out of cherry and routing passages on the back to make room for the extension cable (so it could hang in landscape orientation) and a toggle to hold the Kindle firmly in place. Additional information on the build is available here.

Over at TIME.com, we've published David Greelish's interview with Alan Kay, the famously quotable visionary whose Dynabook proposal has provided much of the inspiration for advances in mobile computing for over 40 years now. Kay talks about his work, laments that the computer has failed to live up to its potential as an educational tool, and says that the iPad betrays the vision that he and others created at Xerox PARC and elsewhere in the 1970s
