The world's leading app stores have combined to reveal a total of 13.4 billion apps were downloaded worldwide in the first quarter for 2013.
Data from Canalys showed Apple's App Store, Google Play, BlackBerry World and Windows Phone Store to have hit the target – an increase of 11 per cent over 2012 in its entirety.
Similarly, app revenue grew by nine per cent to a total of $2.2 billion in the first quarter alone.
"Apps have had a huge impact on the way consumers use mobile devices, what they value, and what they expect from smart phones and tablets," said Adam Daum, chief analyst for Canalys.
"They are now central to how consumers engage with content and connected services, and how they personalise their devices around the app-enabled features that are important to them," continues the statement.
Google Play was found to have generated the most downloads, as the store accounted for 51 per cent of all apps downloaded.
However, Apple continues to rake in the most revenue, as the firm's store maintained a 74 per cent of the market share.
"Apple's App Store and Google Play remain the heavyweights in the app store world. In comparison, BlackBerry World and the Windows Phone Store remain distant challengers today, though they still should not be ignored," said Tim Shepherd, senior analyst at Canalys.
"Each of these four stores represents a different market proposition for developers, and remains the primary outlet to reach users on the platforms they serve."

St John’s Church in Mickleover has decided to replace hymn books with Android tablets, further proving that God does not like Apples.
The Register reports that the C of E congregation, the first of its kind to replace hymn books with tablets, were donated Archos tablets by The Cloud – a BSkyB company which provides Wi-Fi for the church’s on-site internet café.
"A couple of members of the congregation have used their own devices during Sunday service before," said the church.
Connected by desktop sharing software, each tablet follows the service taking place on the church’s projection screen.

Reports indicate that Microsoft's development of Windows Blue could see the firm merge its Windows 8 and Windows Phone operating systems together.
Digitimes indicates that Microsoft is developing Windows Blue – which will be released publicly via a different name – in order to merge its Windows 8 OS and mobile platform together in a bid to rival the likes of Google's Android and Chrome platforms.
It follows the news that a preliminarily dubbed "Androidbook" could be released by the end of 2013, which would see Google partner with PC makers to release Android-based notebooks and Chromebooks.
Details on Blue remain scarce, and it remains unknown if the product will be merely the first step towards integrating the two platforms, or if it will unify them both on its release.
Digitimes' report also hints at a next-gen Windows operating system, which is reportedly set for an October release. However, it's unclear whether this refers to the release of Blue or a new product in itself, potentially Windows 9.
All should become clear surrounding Windows Blue come June 26th, as Microsoft holds its annual Build developers conference, which the firm has confirmed via an official blog post will showcase "a set of plans referred to internally as Blue."

A number of rumours suggest Samsung has a giant ‘phablet’ in the works that will be even bigger than the Galaxy Note II.
Allegedly called the Galaxy Mega, ET News reports that the handset will sport a huge 6.3-inch screen, come with a dual-core Exynos processor, 8MP rear-facing camera, and a 2MP forward-facing one.
SamMobile seems to think the new device will only be 5.8-inches in size, which would still make it bigger than the Galaxy Note II. SamMobile also reports that the Mega will have a 960 x 540 display, 1.4GHz Exynos processor, and 1GB of RAM.
If the rumours are true, Samsung’s next device could contend with the smaller tablets on the market such as the Nexus 7 or even the iPad mini, but obviously with the addition of being able to make phone calls. But who wants to walk about talking on a giant over-sized phone?

EE has announced it is to double the speed of its 4G internet service to over 20Mbps in a number of UK cities.
Amongst those cities set to benefit from the improved network are London, Birmingham, Manchester, Bristol, Leeds, Liverpool, Sheffield, Cardiff, Edinburgh and Glasgow.
The firm's 4G network already offers average speeds of between 8Mbps and 12Mbps in over 50 UK cities, but today's new locations will experience the new cap of over 20Mbps.
However, analysts have issued a warning to consumers that EE's latest rollout could see 4G data bills soar.
As devices are increasingly granted access to higher internet speeds, users are more likely to consumer larger quantities of content such as HD video, music streaming and data-heavy sat nav services, which could result in expensive data bills.

Edinburgh-based tech retailer and repairer SimplyFixIt has stepped in to replace a stolen iPad after it was taken from a blind user at a library.
The thief seems to have specifically targeted a computer class for partially sighted and blind users at the Central Library, and took the iPad from a student's lap.
Class leader Jim McKenzie used the device in conjunction with an app called Supernova that enables users to increase the font size or listen to what's been displayed on a PC screen.
McKenzie told The Edinburgh Reporter: ”I’m absolutely delighted that SimplyFixIt have offered to give me a replacement iPad – it’s restored my faith in humanity! The iPad had proved really popular with the Resource Centre users and it’s great that we’ll be able to continue to run these sessions. Although it was my own device, I mainly used it for working with the blind and visually impaired people who would come in to the library. I decided to get one after the RNIB hailed the technology as the way forward. It’s been a huge success and we’re getting more and more people asking to use it. I’m very grateful that we’ll be able to continue these sessions.”
SimplyFixIt's Scott Wilkinson commented:”The perpetrator of this cowardly act was obviously the lowest type of human being imaginable. To target a vulnerable individual without consideration of his circumstances is reprehensible. We felt, as a local business, that we could not stand by without doing something.
“If for the sake of a few hundred pounds we could reinstate the continuation of the class then it is a no brainer on our part. Hopefully, this should send a lesson to anyone else who tries to steal from the vulnerable.”

April 9th, 2013, 23:22 Posted By: wraggster
Apple has offered a further hint that the firm is looking to incorporate fingerprint technology within its future iPhone and iPad devices.
A recent job posting from the firm details its search for a software engineer to join its new team at the Melbourne Design Centre, Florida. Interestingly, this is the same location as that of the AuthenTech, which Apple bought out last year.
Bought by Apple in a deal worth $356m, AuthenTech specialises in fingerprint sensors and identity management.
The acquisition and job posting have fuelled further speculation that Apple is working on fingerprint technology, which would feature in its future iOS devices.
Rumours surrounding the new technology have circled for a while now, as Apple revealed it would feature new technology in its upcoming devices in reaction to Samsung, which recently revealed its Galaxy S 4 smartphone and the device's eye recognition tech.
Following Samsung's unveiling of the Galaxy S 4 – which is largely regarded as the iPhone's closest competitor – the inclusion of new technology such as fingerprint recognition seems like an increasingly likely one.
Additional reports have indicated that Apple is looking to replace the iconic Home button of the iPhone with its rumoured finger recognition feature.
Whilst Samsung's Galaxy S 4 is set to launch this month, consumers will have to wait a while longer to see if the rumours are true, as the iPhone 5S is reportedly set for a June lauch.

* Buildfix for iOS. Fixes #1220.
* Merge pull request #1217 from unknownbrackets/fbo-flicker
Adjust FBO decimation to optimize for creation
* Change FBO age back to 5, gets in a create loop...
* Adjust FBO decimation to optimize for creation.
But, keep aggressively decimating for a few frames.
* Merge pull request #1219 from unknownbrackets/mpeg-fix
Initial sceMpegGetUserdataAu() from JPCSP
* Initial sceMpegGetUserdataAu() from JPCSP.
Because I got the stub wrong, so now it does something.
* Merge pull request #1214 from unknownbrackets/pad-fix
Treat the keyboard and pads differently
* Treat the keyboard and pads differently.
We basically never want two pads active at once, but keyboard is
different. So, they need to be treated differently.
Fixes #1212.
* Merge pull request #1213 from unknownbrackets/dlist-cycles
Try to match GPU cycles to the CPU
* Use regular events for GPU for now, quicker.
There's too much latency in threadsafe events, causing tests to fail.
Might break games too. I guess they need to execute more often...
* Don't allow two drawsyncs to be in play at once.
* Slow down the GPU clock estimate.
This makes Fat Princess for example much faster.
* Make sure lists aren't reused before they complete.
* Delay GPU signals and waits to simulate cycles.
* Merge pull request #1215 from raven02/patch-1
Add "Use Media Engine" to pause screen as well
* Keep Fast Memory as unstable
* Add "Use Media Engine" to pause screen as well
* Merge pull request #1216 from unknownbrackets/alloc-func
Initial stab at implementing some new memory funcs
* Initial stab at implementing some new memory funcs.
Borrowed from JPCSP, kept simple. Need to do tests.
* Don't "DirtyShader" at the end of frame, instead just "stop". Fixes issues caused by vertex arrays left enabled still hanging around.
* Bigger stack buffer for gpu stats (yes need to do something better here).
* Don't use PPGe for debug overlays. Fixes fps counter in games where it didn't work before.
* Merge pull request #1209 from unknownbrackets/threadqueue-perf
Don't save/restore VFPU regs for threads that don't use them
* Don't save vregs for threads that don't use them.
* Optimize resched with a running thread.
Esp. if it would go back to itself.
* fragment shader: RGBA DECAL does make more sense this way
* Merge pull request #1200 from unknownbrackets/threadqueue-perf
Improve threadqueue performance
* Fix crash if queue is empty during savestate.
On load it would then crash.
* Dynamically size the thread queue, explicitly alloc.
* Replace the thread ready queue with non-STL.
It seems much faster.
* Centralize the thread ready queue logic.
This makes it slower for now, but should make it easier to optimize correctly.
* Merge pull request #1203 from raven02/patch-10
Show upto 8 recent item for Android/iOS

On Sony's upcoming Xperia SP mobile handset, you'll be able to control variousPlayStation Mobile titles using the PlayStation 3's ubiquitous DualShock 3 controller. Sure, it seems a bit strange to us that you'd want to carry a full game console controller with you, but then it's also a much better option for games with virtual buttons. And hey, Sony's not the only one employing such strange logic, so who are we to judge?
Anyway, the controller functionality seems locked to Sony's Xperia SP phone for now, but it's likely to head elsewhere before too long (at very least to the rest of Sony's Xperia line, if not all PlayStation Mobile-enabled devices) -- we've asked the company for more info, but have yet to hear back. Since the DualShock 3 connects via Bluetooth, pairing the DualShock 3 with the Xperia SP is a snap; simply connect via USB, pair the devices, and you're off the races (or the shooting, or whatever game you're playing). After doing so, you'll be able to reconnect without wires in subsequent uses by holding down the PlayStation button in the middle of the DualShock 3. For a quick walkthrough of how it works, head past the break for a snazzy video showing off just that.

We knew good and well that HTC's One would be arriving on T-Mobile USA at some point, and for those uninterested in tying themselves to Sprint or AT&T, here's some news that matters: Best Buy has just confirmed to us that it'll begin shipping T-Mobile's flavor of the aforementioned phone on April 19th. The "Glacier Silver" kit will be on sale for as little at $249.99 on a two-year deal, whereas you'll be forced to pay $699.99 for the blessing of having no strings attached. Granted, T-Mob's Simple Choice suggests that no contracts will be involved, but if you take the bait on the subsidized price, you'll either be hanging with the carrier long enough to pay it off, or you'll be forking out the difference on the way to some other operator.

Remember 1980s ZX Spectrum and Commodore 64 IP Footballer of the Year? It’s coming back.
As is the way nowadays, White Room Games will this afternoon launch a Kickstarter appeal for the project. The game is being developed by Birmingham studio Flaming Pumpkin.
The plan is to first release iOS and Android versions and eventually expand onto other platforms.
“We are looking for donations (£1 and upwards) and in return you can get either real world items or in game bonuses,” White Room director Luiz Ferreira told MCV. “We also have some exciting in game sponsorship and advertising opportunities, which includes advertisements behind the goal and sponsored items.
“As you know making video games is extremely expensive and given the economic situation it is almost impossible to get investment for projects. Therefore we have decided to turn to a crowd funding website, Kickstarter, to get our project off the ground.”
