The new flagship Blackberry Z10 seems to be in danger of turning into a commercial disaster.
The Wall Street Journal has word from two separate reports that paint a tremendously worrying picture for the handset. The Z10 launched in various territories between January and March of this year.
A report from Detwiler Fenton makes the amazing claim that returns of the handset are currently tracking ahead of its actual sales.
Analyst Jeff Johnston stated: “We believe key retail partners have seen a significant increase in Z10 returns to the point where, in several cases, returns are now exceeding sales, a phenomenon we have never seen before.”
Furthermore ITG analyst Joe Fersedi claims that sales of the Z10 “started poorly and weakened significantly as the days passed” and are “in line-to marginally ahead of anemic sales of older Blackberry models”.
He added that while the Z10 initially accounted for four per cent and seven per cent of the sales share at US carriers Verizon and AT&T respectively, this has since fallen to one per cent and two per cent.
Blackberry, which claims to have sold 1m Z10’s prior to its US launch last month, has denied the reports: “BlackBerry wishes to respond to media coverage today regarding speculation that there have been abnormally high levels of returns of BlackBerry Z10 devices.
“This is absolutely false. Our data shows that return rates for BlackBerry Z10 devices both in the US and on a global basis are in line with or better than our expectations and are consistent with return rates for other premium smartphones in the market today.”

Executives at suppliers have told WSJ that Microsoft is working on designs for a touch-enabled watch.
Speaking anonymously, the executives claim that earlier this year, Microsoft asked suppliers in Asia to ship components for a potential watch-style device.
One source said he met with Microsoft’s research and development team at its Redmond HQ, saying it is currently unclear whether the firm will opt to move ahead with the device.
If Microsoft does decide to go ahead with the smart watch, it will join the likes of Apple, Samsung and Google, who are all rumoured to be creating the wearable technology.
Back in February it was reported that Apple had filed a new patent for a device strongly resembling it firm’s highly rumoured iWatch device.
A month later Samsung Mobile’s vice president revealed that the firm has been preparing a watch product for some time.
Just a few days later after the Samsung news, The Financial Times reported that Google’s Android unit is developing a smart watch.

First version of Sony PSP emulator for Android/Windows has been updated. Changes:
- Another month, another version of PPSSPP! This time I've only added 0.0.5 to the version number, but that's just because I'm saving 0.8, 0.9 and 1.0 for big future updates Don't worry, there's been plenty of improvements. Many more games run and some games run faster - the God of War games should now run well on modest PCs and for example the Monster Hunter games are becoming playable on fast phones (although without sound). And I've started to improve the UI - now there's a recent list and game icons in the game selector.

"Facebook on Friday released its Android launcher called Home. The company also updated its Facebook app, adding in new permissions to allow it to collect data about the apps you are running. Facebook has set up Home to interface with the main Facebook app on Android to do all the work. In fact, the main Facebook app features all the required permissions letting the Home app meekly state: 'THIS APPLICATION REQUIRES NO SPECIAL PERMISSIONS TO RUN.' As such, it’s the Facebook app that’s doing all the information collecting. It’s unclear, however, if it will do so even if Facebook Home is not installed. Facebook may simply be declaring all the permissions the Home launcher requires, meaning the app only starts collecting data if Home asks it to."

Joshua Nuernberger and Wadjet Eye Games' cult-classic sci-fi noir point-and-click adventure Gemini Rue has launched today on iOS.It's currently on sale for ÂŁ2.49 / $3.99, but will go up to its standard price of ÂŁ2.99 / $4.99 after two weeks. The iOS version features enhancements like larger in-game icons and text, a hotspot finder to minimise pixel-hunting, and a redesigned combat system. It also includes the original game's optional developer commentary and "gritty, low-res graphics."Gemini Rue originally launched in 2011 to rave reviews. Ex-Eurogamer scribe Kristen Reed dug it. "If you're done with all the remakes, and hanker after an adventure that remembers exactly the way things were, Gemini Rue demands your attention," he wrote in his 8/10Gemini Rue review..

Thanks to an NYPD pilot program, over 400 officers have special Android smartphones that allow them to pull up suspect data on the spot, according to the New York Times. Patrol car-mounted laptops can be slow and cumbersome, while the call-disabled handsets (which look like Samsung's Rugby Smart in the image above) let patrolmen see a suspect's criminal record on the spot and even know if a felon hides drugs "in his left sock," according to one cop. The custom app can also dig up info like open warrants, arrest and incident records, orders of protection and photos of everyone who's been arrested in a particular building, for instance. They can even drum up the location of every video camera pointed at a particular spot -- so, watch where you spit that gum, scofflaw.

It's really happening. Starting today, you'll be able to pick up an iPhone 5 with that Magenta hue. T-Mobile's offering the device both in retail and online, starting at $100 plus 24 monthly installments of 20 bucks. You can pick from either of the two monochrome extremes and if you're looking to spend a little less, you can also choose an iPhone 4S or 4 instead. Remember; you won't get the same subsidized pricing from Apple directly, so scroll through the options at the Uncarrier source and ensure that you're ready for that Coachella stream this weekend.

Pebble has been on a rapid cadence with smartwatch updates to justify those crowdfunded dollars, and it's not letting up just because watch shipments are well underway. PebbleOS 1.10 has arrived with support for custom watch faces built using the matching (and newly available) SDK. The revamp will be especially helpful for iOS users -- we see several fixes for crashes, permissions and power in store. Everyone gets options to disable backlighting and vibrations in certain conditions, too. As such, there's every reason to fire up the Pebble app for an upgrade, even if it's just for some visual variety.

Despite an early leak on Monday, once again the internet lit-up with chatter about the release of Facebook Home in the Google Play store. All good and well if you find yourself in the right place with the right phone, but what about everyone else? Unsurprisingly, the digital door staff (read, Facebook's hardware restrictions) have already been dispatched, meaning almost any Android device can download and installthe social software. We can thank Paul O'Brien at MoDaCo for doing the honors, and for those interested, the process is pretty simple. If your issue is location (rather than device) you'll need the latest version of Facebook's regular and Messenger apps first. Once you do, just download the APK, activate it, and you're good. If hardware is the barrier, then you'll need to get the patched versions of Facebook, Messenger and Home (via the source). Early reports suggest that most features operate just fine, but that sending SMS from Messenger can sometimes stop working. If that's a deal-breaker, you'll have to keep an eye out for updates. If it's not, then tap the source up for the full lowdown. If you do, head back here and let us know how you got on.

Namco Bandai's free-to-play spin off for the Tekken series has been downloaded for smartphones and tablets more than 1m times.
Tekken Card Tournament was released on iOS and Android last week and passed the 1m milestone after just four days on release. It is also available to play in web browsers.
The game features the series trademark battles, but moves are unleashed by collecting different attack cards rather than mashing your way through arthitis-inducing button combos.
Crucially, retail will be able to cash in on this download-only title later in the year when physical versions of the virtual attack cards are released in stores. And now there's a 1m-strong audience out there for them.
Namco Bandai has promised these cards "are set to arrive in stores soon".
You can find out more about Tekken Card Tournament and the retail trading cards in our preview, published earlier this year.

April 13th, 2013, 23:20 Posted By: wraggster
The Office of Fair Trading this morning announced that it is to investigate in app purchase strategies employed by video games publishers.
The move is a result of concerns that some customers – primarily children – are unwittingly spending sizable sums on content in games which, when they are initially downloaded, are presumed to be free.
The OFT has appealed to concerned parents to get in touch. It has also approached a number of games publishers to explain the reasoning behind their payment models.
Apple and Google are understood to be on the OFT’s radar, as well as gaming services such as Facebook and Moshi Monsters.
Here MCV takes a look at some of the more notable moments in the history of IAP:
Zombies vs Ninjas (Hwa David)
Five-year-old Danny Kitchen hit the headlines in February when The Daily Mail reported on his purchasing of over £1,700 worth of IAPs in Zombies vs Ninjas. Apple eventually refunded Danny’s parents… but only AFTER the media coverage.
Smurf’s Village (Capcom)
A $99.99 IAP for Capcom’s licensed kids game caught the attention of Apple, once it had been reported in the mainstream press. Tired of significant number of calls it was receiving from aggrieved parents, the iPhone maker eventually cajoled Capcom into placing a cap on the number of IAPs that could be purchased in-game – five every 15 minutes.
Playmobil Pirates (Gameloft)
Gameloft was forced to make a statement regarding IAPs in its licensed Playmobil game, the most expensive of which came in at £69.99. It didn’t back down, though. It insisted its pricing followed a standard model and was mainly aimed at adults, adding that players are perfectly free not to purchase the IAPs.
Rock Band (EA)
EA had planned to not only stop providing DLC for Rock band on iOS but actually disable the game people had ploughed money into completely. It changed its mind, of course, but the saga was a warning blow to gamers the world over.
DoDonPachi Blissful Death (Cave)
The prestige of 1CCing a Cave shmup was once the crowning glory of any serious gamer. Cave’s decision to introduce IAPs in this iOS release was met with derision from its fanbase and was yet further evidence of the developer’s struggles to try and get to grips with the economics of modern gaming. The signs ppint to Cave having now withdrawn from the smartphone market completely.
Beautiful Katamari (Namco Bandai)
Namco’s Xbox 360 title launched with DLC. Nothing new there, you say. But Beautiful Katamari is remembered by most for being the first game that required the purchase of DLC to obtain all 40 of its Xbox Live achievements. Undoubtedly the number of Achievement Whores out there lead to a tidy profit on this bit of content.
Real Racing 3 (EA)
Both Real Racing and Real Racing 2 were premium iOS releases but the third game in the series – the first since developer Firemonkey’s acquisition at the hands of EA – was free to download but was heavy on the IAPs. 148apps.com estimated that it would cost gamers $503 to 100 per cent complete the game.
Dead Space 3 (EA)
EA’s decision late on in this game’s development process to standardise ammunition and introduce IAP options for gamers was met with the sort of outrage you’d expect from The Daily Mail should a group of Polish plumbers take to streets with a burning effigy of Princess Diana.
Black Ops II (Activision)
Having tried its hand at selling gamers access to the Call of Duty Elite network, Activision last year tried a different tact – Elite would be free, but instead they could pay cash for pretty designs on their guns. What changes to the payment model will this year’s game bring?
Gears of War Judgment (Microsoft)
Microsoft was far less subtle in its treatment of IAPs with recent release Gears of War Judgment. As well as paying the best part of £50 for the game itself and £40 for a year’s Xbox Live access for multiplayer, players are now able to spend even more cash on things like XP boosts and exclusive playlists. There’s no arguing that these purchases don’t affect the core gameplay.

SternisheFan sends in an article about the new features and developments we can expect out of smartphones in the near future. The shortlist: more sensors for tracking the world outside the phone, more gesture-based (i.e. non-touch) input, and integration with wearable computers like smartwatches and Google Glass. From the article:"These under-appreciated components -- the gyroscope, accelerometer, magnetometer, and so forth -- are starting to get more friends in the neighborhood. Samsung, for instance, slipped pressure, temperature, and humidity sniffers into the Galaxy S4. They may not be the sexiest feature in your phone, but in the future, sensors like accelerometers will be able to collect and report much more detailed information. ... In addition to air quality, temperature and speed of movement are also biggies. [Also, a smartphone that can] track your pulse, or even double as an EKG, turning the everyday smartphone into a medical device. ... [For wearable computing,] your smartphone is still there, still essential for communicating with your environment, but it becomes only one device in a collection of other, even more personal or convenient gadgets, that solve some of the same sorts of problems in different or complementary ways."What do you think will be the next generation of killer features for smartphones?

The FDA recently gave clearance to Vital Art and Science Inc. (VAS) to market software which enables people with degenerative eye conditions such as macular degeneration and diabetic retinopathy to monitor their vision at home with their iPhone. The software, which is called myVisionTrack, isn't a replacement for regular visits to the doctor, but rather allows patients to keep tabs on their vision in between visits with eye care professionals. VAS notes that retinal diseases affect approximately 40 million individuals worldwide and 13 million in the United States. While treatments have been developed to deal with degenerative eye conditions, early diagnosis is of paramount importance — which is why the software is so important."

"Microsoft Office slideware for iOS and Android has been resisting many migrations to Google Apps. Although a number of the largest companies, from KLM to Disney, have already moved to Google Apps, most large companies are still using Microsoft Office heavily. The majority of current Google users are smaller businesses. Now Microsoft has been forced to admit that its office suite for Android will be delayed by at least a year and Zdnet tells us that Google will be the big winner from that. However, they also say QuickOffice, rather than Google Apps, will be the main winner. Other Android app suites will benefit too, though currently the Android version of LibreOffice is only available as a dev build for sideloading and is having some difficulties packaging for Google Play, so it may not benefit from this delay unless more volunteers step up to help. Microsoft relies heavily on Office for revenue, so this may represent a real, long-term threat to the company.
