BabyTime initiative is used to connect parent and child if complications arise during birth.
The Maxine Dunitz Children's Health Centre at Cedars Sinai in West Hollywood has launched an innovative iPad-based campaign called BabyTime, which is used to connect mothers to newborns when complications have occurred during birth.
It means mums that are bedridden after a cesarean section or other problems can connect to their baby via the Apple tablet even when based on different floors, with medical teams conducting the usage across secure web connections.
Charles F. Simmons Jr, MD and chair of the Cedars-Sinai Department of Pediatrics, said: "BabyTime will help bridge communication with the family and the baby's medical team and is an excellent use of technology to help new mothers bond with their babies, even when they cannot be physically at their babies' bedside.
"When doctors and nurses are treating a newborn in the NICU, mom can be right there asking questions and getting updates, even if she’s on a different floor."
He adds that around 30 per cent of mothers that have C-sections aren't well enough to leave their bed and leave the labour department to visit intensive care for around 48 hours.

The OFT's investigation into the freemium market comes at an interesting time. Free-to-play (F2P) games are gradually becoming the norm, enabling players to download a title without charge, while the option to make in-app purchases for upgrades and locked content provides developers with revenues.
At the start of the year, former Mobile Entertainmentmanaging editor Lisa Carter experienced the perils of F2P gaming, however, when her three-year-old son made IAPs via an iPad game, which amounted to almost £100. This was enabled with just a few screen taps and no authorisation required from mum.
The experience isn't an isolated incident, and the OFT is on a mission to find out whether children are being pressured or encouraged to pay for content in the apps and games, which are billed as 'free'
The trade body has written to F2P studios to track down information on their in-game marketing, while also contacting parents and consumer groups to find out if the apps are misleading or commercially aggressive.
Cavendish Elithorn, senior director for goods and consumer, said: "We are concerned that children and their parents could be subject to unfair pressure to purchase when they are playing games they thought were free, but which can actually run up substantial costs.
"The OFT is not seeking to ban in-game purchases, but the games industry must ensure it is complying with the relevant regulations so that children are protected. We are speaking to the industry and will take enforcement action if necessary."
The OFT expects to publish its next steps by October 2013. If you want to make a report, visit the company's direct exhortations page.
In other news, Kids Best iPad Apps recently found that just 24 per cent of children's iPad apps provide a privacy policy, with developers claiming they're too busy to include one.

The Galaxy S4 is the new flagship smartphone from Samsung that the manufacturer is the marketing as the ultimate ‘life companion’. Part of this ‘life companion’ functionality includes features that are designed to aid users in creating new relationships, as well as sustaining old relationships with friends, family, and colleagues.
So, just what are these unique features, and how can they help in everyday life when it comes to people and friendships? We’ve taken a look at some of the Galaxy S4’s functionality to see if it is the ‘life companion’ Samsung claims it is…
ChatOn
The ChatOn live chat feature on the Galaxy S4 has been upgraded from the functionality available on previous Samsung smartphones so it now supports video chat and screen sharing. This means you can share what’s on your screen with anyone you are talking to using ChatOn.
Say, for example, you’re chatting to a friend who is abroad to organise a night out when they get back from their trip. The screen share function offered by ChatOn means you can show them a webpage that features the outfit you’re thinking of buying to wear when you next see each other.
Dual Camera
Another Galaxy S4 function that’s quite handy for keeping in touch with friends is video calling using the Dual Camera feature. Dual Camera allows users to utilise both front and rear cameras simultaneously, so if you are taking a picture you can capture an image of what’s in front of the phone as well as behind it. These images can then be blended together into one photo.
Dual Camera can also used when video calling, so the person you are video calling will be able to see what’s in front of the rear camera as well as the person holding the smartphone via the front-facing snapper. This could be really useful if you’re video calling someone from a picturesque location as you’ll be able to chat to your friend whilst showing them the amazing view you can see.
S Translator
If you’re abroad or are meeting people who speak another language, the Galaxy S4’s S Translator can help out with communication issues. S Translator knows nine different languages, including Chinese, French, German, Italian, Japanese, Korean, Portuguese, Spanish, and English, and can be used to translate text into speech using the phone’s voice functionality, as well as speech into text.
This is especially useful when on holiday and scenarios such as looking for directions to your hotel arise. Simply input the language and the directions you need into S Translator and the feature will offer audio of what you want to say in the chosen language. The in-built optical reader can also translate printed text too, so if a menu in a restaurant is in a foreign language you can scan the text and it will present it in your chosen language.
Group Play
Group Play is designed to let users interact with friends who also have a Galaxy S4. It allows people to share music tracks or play multiplayer games over a number of synced devices. All you have to do is wirelessly connect multiple Galaxy S4 phones using Wi-Fi direct, and then you can share photos, music, documents and more.
This feature could be used if you decide to have an impromptu party in the park where there’s no power source to plug a stereo in. Simply hook up your Galaxy S4s and each device can be used to play the same song at the same time creating a surround sound audio experience for everyone to enjoy.
So, is the Galaxy S4 really a ‘life companion’ that can help users build and maintain relationships? Well, the features we have discussed in this article are definitely handy in a number of situations, and would aid users to keep in contact with existing friends, and communicate when meeting new people too. So, if you want a device that offers more communication options than just calling and texting, the Galaxy S4 makes an excellent choice.

Rag Doll Kung-Fu, the marionette brawler on PC, is getting an iOS port this summer courtesy of Another Place Productions. The iOS version sports new art from Fable art director John McCormack, a single-player survival mode and, of course, a new touch-based control scheme. One finger lets you move your character around, two fingers control attacks.
Local iOS multiplayer is possible through Bluetooth synchronization, plus there's online multiplayer over the internet, Eurogamer reports. Rag Doll Kung-Fu will be a free download on iOS, with in-app purchases funding Another Place Productions.
Rag Doll Kung-Fu was created by Mark Healey, an employee of Lionhead at the time. After a favorable GDC showing in 2005, Healey found a publisher in Valve who then put the game out on Steam to great success – a milestone as the first third-party game to launch on the platform. Healey went on to become co-founder of LittleBigPlanet developer Media Molecule, and currently resides there as creative director.

Tech giants labelled “obstreperous and cantankerous†for their patent disputes
A Miami judge has accused Apple and Google for improper use of the court in the tech giants’ ongoing patent disagreements.
Apple and Google’s Motorola Mobility unit are currently engaged in patent disputes in a several of US States – and in other nations outside of the country.
The case in Florida has expanded since it was originally brought to the court in 2010. It now contains 180 claims relating to 12 separate patents with the meaning of more than 100 terms in active dispute, Bloomberg has reported.
However, in a court filing on Wednesday, US District Judge Robert Scola criticised both companies for their apparent refusal to reach a resolution, labelling their conduct as, “obstreperous and cantankerousâ€.
“The parties have no interest in efficiently and expeditiously resolving this dispute,†said Scola.

Windows Phone firm is vexed at the way the search-cum-mobile giant pushes Google-branded services to Android.
Microsoft has joined Windows Phone partner Nokia and more than ten other tech companies to declare war on Google, filing a complaint with the European Commission for the way the search firm encourages Android OEMs to use Google-owned services, the BBC reports.
The angry mob goes under the name FairSearch, and says Google abuses its mobile market domination, with YouTube, Google Maps and the like pushed to users of Android devices.
It adds a further blow by describing Google as a 'trojan horse,' that acts like Android is a free solution, though OEMs are "required to pre-load an entire suite of Google mobile services and to give them prominent default placement on the phone."
Responding to the complaint, Google, said: "We continue to work co-operatively with the European Commission."
Meanwhile, Thomas Vinje, Brussels-based counsel for FairSearch, said: "We are asking the commission to move quickly and decisively to protect competition and innovation in this critical market. Failure to act will only embolden Google to repeat its desktop abuses of dominance as consumers increasingly turn to a mobile platform dominated by Google's Android operating system."

Korean manufacturer launches biggest smartphone to date.
Samsung has lifted the lid on its new Galaxy Mega smartphones, one of which boasts a whopping 6.3-inch screen.
The firm today announced two Galaxy smartphones simultaneously; one with a 5.8-inch screen and one measuring in at 6.3 to become the largest smartphone released to date.
Featuring an HD display, the 6.3-inch Galaxy Mega comes with a dual-core 1.7GHz processor, runs Android 4.2 and features an eight-megapixel camera. For those wondering, the precise resolution of the HD display is yet to be officially confirmed.
It also offers users the option to expand upon its internal storage of eight or 16 gigs – depending upon which model you have – by up to 64GB with microSD.
Meanwhile, the Galaxy Mega 5.8 features a somewhat reduced set of features, with a qHD resolution of 960 x 540 and a 1.4GHz dual-core processor.
However, it does match its larger sibling with an eight-megapixel camera, although it will only be available in eight-gigabyte form.
Expected to go on sale in May, there are currently no details available regarding the pricing of either model of the Samsung Galaxy Mega.

As T-Mobile prepares to officially offer the iPhone for the first time, it's trying to pump up the lure with a trade-in offer for owners of the 4 and 4S models. Available through mid-June, the promotion lets iPhone 4 and 4S owners trade in their current device for an AWS HSPA+ friendly iPhone 5 for no money upfront (with monthly payments) under its new no-contract Simple Choice Plans. Additionally, depending on the condition of the hardware being traded in, customers can get a credit of up to $120 to be used against those payments (knocking it down to $15 from $20, for example) their usual bill or accessories. If last month's colorful presentation wasn't enough to pull you to T-Mobile from another carrier, does this new offer sweeten the deal enough? A full breakdown follows below in the press release, sales start Friday.

We may still not have exact launch dates for the Galaxy S4 on all carriers, but the launch is approaching -- and with it, Samsung's latest big ad campaign. From the looks of the first few TV spots, the company is staying away from any shots at its rivals orcelebrity appearances (at least for now), focusing instead on some of the new featuresof the smartphone; Sound Shot, Group Play and S Translator all get their own 30 second ads, while another minute-long commercial (appearing in at least in the UK) offers a more general and suitably dramatic overview of the phone. There's no word yet on exactly how big a push Samsung will be making with the new ad campaign, but it's pretty safe to bet you'll be seeing lots of these in the months ahead.

You can't normally read about IP and the mobile industry without coming across two endlessly warring tech companies -- especially when Apple is involved. But today marks a different sort of patent exchange for Cupertino: a cooperative one. Japan-based Access Corporation, a mobile software provider, has agreed to license its patent portfolio -- acquired from its purchase of PalmSource (yes, that's the company behind Palm OS) -- to Apple, in a deal valued at about 1 billion Yen (roughly $10 million USD). It's not the first deal of this kind for Access' smartphone IP. Back in 2010,Microsoft entered into a similar arrangement that gave it the rights to the same portfolio. The lesson here, kids? Money, it solves everything.

Despite a recent preoccupation with the web-based Office 365 service, the folks in Redmond haven't stopped working to bring regular MS Office to mobile users. ZDNetreports that a leaked Microsoft Office roadmap shows that the ubiquitous productivity suite is due to land on Android and iOS in October of 2014. This seems to confirm earlier rumors of an iPad-friendly version of Office, but at a much later date than previously expected.
Android and iOS users aren't the only Office aficionados receiving good news, as the leak also indicates that touch-friendly Blue updates for Word, Excel PowerPoint and OneNote are due to appear for Windows 8 by October of this year. Furthermore, April of 2014 is set to deliver a new version of Office for Mac and Windows phone, and it looks like Microsoft Outlook will finally land on Windows RT by the fall of 2014, too. Naturally, we don't know what features these updates will bring, but it's nice to know they're coming, right?

The fact that Apple relies upon Samsung, its arch-rival, for a healthy amount of its components, is one of the biggest paradoxes in the tech industry. Still, if The Korea Times is to be believed, the unhappy marriage between the two could rapidly be heading towards a divorce. While Apple has previously splashed out several billion per year on Samsung components, the newspaper is suggesting that Cupertino will turn to TSMC to produce its next generation of mobile CPUs -- a rumor that's been making the rounds recently. It's source, and executive at one of Samsung's partners, claims the manufacturer has been cut out of development of the A7 CPU, adding a little bit more credence to those claims. What's more, the same source reports that TSMC is gearing up its 20-nanometer production line to crank out the hardware ready for 2014.

Microsoft's SmartGlass for Android app has just hit version 1.5 thanks to a fresh update on Google Play. The app, which lets users control their XBox via a smartphone or tablet, will now be optimized to work on 7-inch and larger Android tablets. Other new features include an (unfortunately-worded) "always-on" Smartglass Experiences state, which actually just prevents your handset or slate from sleeping while they're running, along with bug fixes and "numerous design and usability improvements." We'll have to give it a further play to see if there's anything juicy buried in the latter, but meanwhile, you can grab it at the break.
