Qualcomm may provide the innards of the next Nexus tablet
[h=3]Google[/h]
According to a report by Reuters, Google is planning an updated Nexus 7 tablet, but the company will be switching to a Qualcomm processor instead of using Nvidia's new Tegra 4. Reuters' sources say the new tablet will debut in July, featuring a higher-resolution screen and thinner bezel. Reportedly, the decision to switch came down to the power requirements of Nvidia's processors.
Sources further said that Google could lower the price of the entry-level Nexus 7 to $149, increasing the pricing gap versus Apple's iPad Mini. Asustek will remain the manufacturer of Google's 7-inch tablet.
Qualcomm and Nvidia have been fighting in the mobile market, but Qualcomm has retained a solid lead in smartphones due to Nvidia's previous lack of an LTE modem for its Tegra processors. The company announced an LTE soft modem earlier this year. The Tegra 3 gained prominence in tablets form factors, but Qualcomm's possible Nexus win could turn the tide.

Just in case you don't like that outlandish, buttonless Z10 thing.
BlackBerry unveiled BlackBerry 10 at the end of January, and though it unveiled the Z10 and Q10, it was clear the former was the favourite child.
The flagship Z10 was the company's attempt to catch up with the touchscreen market, which is often dominated by buttonless handsets like the iPhone and Samsung Galaxy, and it has shipped one million units since launch.
But now, BlackBerry is reverting back to its wacky button-based technology to accommodate customers that prefer the QWERTY keypad, and announces the Q10 will hit the UK at the end of April.
It name drops Carphone Warehouse as a seller of the handset, and the retailer is now taking Q10 pre-orders across O2, Orange, T-Mobile, Three, EE and TalkMobile.
Meanwhile, Phones4u is also offering the Q10, and is will provide the BlackBerry PlayBook to the first 300 buyers of the device. The company is providing the phone for free from £36 a month on contracts or £549.95 SIM-free.

April 5th, 2013, 16:09 Posted By: wraggster
The South Korean firm is expecting to record a 53 per cent jump in profits across the first three months of the year.
Buoyed by strong sales of its smartphone range, Samsung is anticipating operating profits of 8.7tn won (£5bn) over the first quarter of the year – a sharp increase over the 5.7tn won over the same period a year ago.
Whist the guidance will be followed up by a full earnings report later this month, the preliminary figures are greater than those forecast by analysts. However, they fall short of the firm's fourth quarter profits of 2012, which closed at a record $8.3 billion.
Samsung continues to enjoy success as the world's biggest smartphone maker, whilst analysts predict huge sales for the firm's upcoming S 4 flagship smartphone, which is set to release later this month.
The device is set to compete against bitter rival Apple and the firm's iPhone range, as the US firm is reportedly set to release its own new device later this year.
Samsung will release its full quarterly results on April 26th, just three days after Apple reports its own first-quarter financials.

Facebook founder Mark Zuckerberg has showcased the social-networking giant's latest endeavour: Facebook Home.
Home is the latest software from the firm, which is designed to run on Android devices and works off users' Facebook connections.
Once downloaded, Facebook Home essentially replaces a user's home Android home screen and acts as the hub of their device. The software is part of the firm's move to shift its users' focus from "apps and tasks" to people.
Whilst currently a user will unlock their smartphone to be greeted by apps that offer emails, maps, social networking and other services, Facebook Home works to replace this by greeting the user with updates, photos and other posts from their Facebook feed.
However, much like Facebook itself, advertisements will be incorporated into the service in time.
In addition to the new software, Zuckerberg also unveiled the first "Facebook Phone" which is being launched by HTC.
The HTC First is the first device to be offered with Facebook Home preinstalled and is set to launch the same day as the Home revise launches in the US on April 12th.
Whilst a UK release date has yet to be detailed, EE has announced it will become the UK's exclusive provider of the device this summer.
"The HTC First will be exclusively valuable this summer on EE's superfast 4GEE service, with details on pricing and availability to be announced in due course," reads an EE statement.
The device is set to retail in the US for $99, so UK consumers can expect a price tag of around £100, whilst contract subsidisations could see this reduced.
As social-networking become an increasingly core element of peoples lives, it would seem that users are moving to adopt theatre mentality with their mobile devices too.

Badland, the silhouette platformer by the ex-RedLynx team Frogmind, is out on iOS today. Players tap to jump and flap in order to fly through "40 truly unique levels and more coming in updates." A multiplayer mode crowds up to four people around the same screen, fighting to survive and pushing one another out of the way.
The iTunes page for Badland advertises its status as a "Universal app with no [in-app purchases] (player gets the whole game experience optimized to all of his/her iOS devices)." Like Ridiculous Fishing (and every game up until recently!) your purchase gets you the whole game.

BBM Music may only be roughly a year and a half old, but BlackBerry announced in an email to subscribers that it'll be put out to pasture on June 2nd, and April is the last month they'll be charged for it. For those who aren't familiar with BBM Music, it lets users keep up to 50 songs hand-picked from a larger selection in a playlist, and listen to tunes that friends keep in their own collections. Come May, tracks will appear greyed out and become unplayable as BBM contacts stop using the app. Of course, there are other ways to get your music fix. The company formerly known as RIM went so far as to recommend Rdio, giving folks a voucher code for a 30-day pass in the email.

You may not have realized it if you were heads-down with your smartphone, but one of the most popular Angry Birds games is on Facebook: its social network adaptation,Angry Birds Friends, has racked up about 15 million active users. It's only appropriate, then, that Rovio complete the cycle with new plans to bring Angry Birds Friends to mobile. While details are slim, the company vows that the upcoming Android and iOS ports will maintain Facebook integration for rewards and tournaments, and they'll support both phones and tablets. We'll already have an inkling of what gameplay to expect courtesy of the web game, although we're not so fortunate with the release date -- Rovio will only say that the mobile Friends port is coming "soon."

Today Facebook finally took the wraps off Home, a suite of apps and a home screen replacement for Android phones. It's not just a new UI for launching apps however; it replaces the lockscreen with Cover Feed and prioritizes updates from people instead of apps. There is a standard paginated launcher, that is always just a swipe away. But the focus is on the full-screen images that are your new welcome screen. These are status updates from friends that you can easily flip through and double tap to like when someone posts something exciting. Plain text status updates are placed over a user's cover photo, to keep the appearance consistent with photo-centric posts.
Notifications are presented as small cards, which Facebook applies an algorithm to, in order determine the updates that are most important to you. Just like with the standard Android UI you simply swipe notifications off screen to dismiss them. But, if you want to remove all of them in one shot, you long press a single notification and the rest will be drawn to it and you'll be able to dismiss the entire stack.

Facebook wants to put Facebook Home on as many devices as possible, and that includes tablets -- eventually. It just promised that tablets would get support, but only at some point in the months ahead. For now, it's phones only. The social network hasn't said which tablets might be at the forefront, although its plan to steadily widen hardware compatibility suggests that any support will evolve quickly.

Like what you've seen so far of Home, Facebook's newly announced UI for Android devices? Well, get used to it because, according to Founder and CEO Mark Zuckerberg, it's the "next version of Facebook." The people-centric integration, shown off today on the AT&T-exclusive HTC First, makes your individual user profile the "hub" and relies heavily upon a card-like interface for swipe notifications that can be easily read and dismissed. That Facebook would look to Home, a seemingly mobile-native implementation of the social network, as the framework for its platform going forward is unsurprising -- changes recently made to News Feed were done specifically to adapt it to the smartphone space. Whether or not that means you'll see this new interface take over your desktop anytime soon remains to be seen. But take this as a sure sign that Facebook, oft criticized for lagging behind in mobile, is in major course correction mode.
As for when Home will make the transition to iOS, Zuckerberg seemed less optimistic, telling reporters that Android's openness and lack of direct oversight from Google was the major contributing factor to its unveiling today. A version of Home for iOS would require a "partnership" with Apple, which maintains strict control over its "closed" ecosystem; a pairing that would implicitly see Facebook ceding some control to Cupertino. Frame it in that manner and it's easy to see why Home's First debut is a Google-based affair and may continue to be for the foreseeable future. It does seem likely, however, that Microsoft's Windows Phone platform could play host to Home before even iOS, as Zuckerberg's referred to the live-tile OS as falling "somewhere in between" due to the licenses involved.

Spiralling cost of Campus 2 could be a headache for investors
[h=3]Apple[/h]Established in 1976, Apple is a multinational corporation (corporate headquarters based in California)...
apple.com
Apple's hugely ambitious new headquarters, Campus 2, is running around $2 billion over its $3 billion budget.
According to a report on Bloomberg Businessweek, which cites five inside sources, the cost of the vast office building in Cupertino has spiralled since Steve Jobs submitted the plans to the city council in 2011. If the consensus estimate of the sources is accurate, Campus 2 will be at least $1 billion more expensive than the new World Trade Center complex being built in New York City.
However, Apple recently pushed back its move-in date from 2015 to 2016, allegedly due to late meetings with the lead architect, Foster + Partners, about slashing $1 billion from the budget. Apple would not comment on any of the leaked figures.
If correct, however, the ostentatious details of Campus 2 may not be welcomed by Apple's shareholders, some of whom have expressed their disapproval at the company's reluctance to share its $137 billion cash reserve in dividends. One Apple shareholder told Bloomberg that the cost of Campus 2 would be, "rubbing salt in the wound."
If all goes according to Jobs' initial plans, Campus 2 will be a single, four-story, ring-shaped office building, large enough to house more than 12,000 employees and set among 176 acres of trees. Every pane of the 6 square kilometres of glass required will be curved, and the roof will be composed of 700,000 square-feet of solar panels, with the ultimate goal being a completely self-sufficient environment. Apple will plant 6,000 trees from more than 300 species on the land, which, at present, is covered in asphalt car-parks.
When Steve Jobs presented the plans to Cupertino City Council in 2011, he said, "we have a shot at building the best office building in the world. I really do think that architecture students will come here to see it."

The new iPhone either has or shortly will enter production, according to new reports.
The Wall Street Journal reports that the new model will be “similar in size and shape” to the existing iPhone 5, leading to the conclusion that we’re most likely going to see an iPhone 5S unveiling.
Some online chatter has suggested that Apple would skip a revision of its current device and instead jump straight to a significantly redesigned iPhone 6, the idea being that it feels forced to change strategy to address the challenges being imposed by Android rivals such as Samsung and the HTC One.
The Wall Street Journal also believes that the long-rumoured low-spec entry-level iPhone (sometimes referred to as the iPhone Mini) is also in development, with Apple “working with its manufacturing partners in Asia” on the project.
It says the phone will have a four-inch screen and switchable colour shells.
Both handsets could arrive by the summer, the site, reports, alongside the intended release of iOS 7.
