Chrome Beta for Android just hit version 27 today, delivering with it a few nice enhancements to what is already arguably the best mobile browser on the market. The two biggest tweaks are the ability to view your tab history on the tablet version by holding down the browser back button and the addition of a fullscreen mode on the phone. Scrolling down to make the address bar disappear on a handset is a extremelywelcome change. A lack of fullscreen browsing was one of the few quirks of Chromethat occasionally had us contemplating a return to the stock Android browser. There are a couple of other, less notable, tweaks such as support for client side certificates. The Omnibar will also now continue to display any search terms you enter, instead of the URL for the results. You can see the full change log at the source and download Chrome Beta for Android at the more coverage link.

If you damage the microUSB connector, SIM slot or camera module on Samsung's new Galaxy S4, you may not need to spend a lot of time or cash swapping in replacements. Of course, you'll need to get the flagship smartphone in hand before you're able to damage it, but if you do, repairs shouldn't be a tremendous undertaking, if today's teardown video is any indication. According to TechnoBuffalo, which published the clip (available at the source link), the Gorilla Glass screen could be a bit more costly to replace, but overall, the device appears to be quite repairable. US carriers are expected to begin selling the Jelly Bean smartphone later this month, so even though this first undressing isn't terribly detailed, we should have but days to wait before taking a much closer look.

When it comes to Ouya, much of the excitement has focused on the physical box itself: a cheap £99 Android console made famous on Kickstarter.
The hardware launches on June 4th, will be stocked by GAME, and will launch with hundreds of smartphone games rebuilt for TV.
But the platform’s real innovation isn’t necessarily its quick-to-market console. According to CEO Julie Uhrman, its digital storefront has been designed to improve how downloadable games are sold in the home.
In contrast to PlayStation, Xbox and Wii U, the console’s front end is a streamlined menu that emphasises ‘discovery’. The firm plans to maintain a set of subdivisions that separate out content by genre, but will also run its own curated channel, and use engagement metrics based on the amount of time spent on each game to show users the most popular titles.
“We’re not approaching this like other consoles are,” Uhrman told MCV last week.
“Every step of the way this has been about keeping things simple – we haven’t thrown out anything that you would expect to find on a console, but we have focused on making it as easy as possible to get users closer to games.”
Much of this positioning comes to help smaller developers – the primary source of Ouya games – not the big publishers which tend to dominate the ‘What’s New’ and ‘Featured’ spotlight areas on other digital stores.
The device has 8,000 registered developers. Uhrman said that a fifth of those are new to the Android platform on which the console is built.
Ouya also requires each game to be free to try: “in order to give all our users a taste of what can be found on Ouya,” said Uhrman.
Meanwhile, Uhrman said that, despite the emphasis on digital retailing within the console, physical distribution is still important to a set top box device.
She told MCV: “There are aspects of the Ouya that are traditional in that sense – and retail is important to selling this device. It’s just that we approach some of these traditional things in our own Ouya way.”

"Apple has banned all iOS apps from carrying Saga #12, a comic book created by Brian K. Vaughan and Fiona Staples, and published by Image Comics. The reason for the ban is the depiction of oral sex appearing on the computer monitor that serves as the head of one of the characters. The content has been deemed pornographic, and sale of the comic has been blocked. Comixology will allow users to sync their purchases, however, so users of their app will be able to read the book on their i-devices. They just won't be able to buy it through the iOS version of the app."Vaughan himself points out the sexual representation in this issue ("two postage stamp-sized images") are not as graphic or as prominent as other situations from past issues. The difference is that this depiction is of a homosexual encounter rather than a heterosexual one. Image Comics took the high road, saying they regret the decision, but that it's "Apple’s decision and it would be inappropriate for us to tell another company how to run its business."
Update: 04/10 18:36 GMT by S : As it turns out, reports of Apple censorship were wrong. Comixology posted today on their blog that they were the ones who decided to remove the issue of Saga from the app. They did so because they were trying to follow Apple's content guidelines. The issue will be available via their app soon.

Last week Mark Zuckerberg announced Facebook Home, a bit of software that aims to transform a smartphone's homescreen into a Facebook feed. Now, its release date has arrived, as has the earliest device to house Home: the HTC First. Reviews for phone and software have begun to appear, too. The Verge calls the device itself "a mid-range phone, through-and-through." Its hardware is capable but not impressive, and it's slow enough to be noticed, but not to annoy. What interested them the most was that by turning off Facebook Home, you get an operating system that's very close to an unpolluted, stock Android 4.1.2. Ars generally agrees, pointing out its solid feel, the trade-off of a less-readable but more-holdable 4.3" screen compared to the trend toward 4.8" displays, and an awkwardly placed micro-USB port. As for the Facebook Home Software: "Home takes status updates out of the Facebook app and slaps them right on your homescreen. Instead of little boxes scrolling vertically, however, each update from your News Feed becomes a full-screen photo with small bits of text at the top," says the Verge, adding that having Facebook updates located between you and whatever you picked up your phone to do can be awfully distracting. Ars says, "What we've seen is an application focused solely on making the Facebook experience the hub for all of your social correspondence, but that can be extremely limiting for those who use a number of other social networks." Both publications praise 'Chat Heads,' Facebook's way of surfacing messages without having to dig through a messaging app.

Until today, hacking and hijacking planes by pressing a few buttons on an Android mobile app has been the stuff of over-the-top blockbuster movies. However, the talk that security researcher and commercial airplane pilot Hugo Teso delivered today at the Hack in the Box conference in Amsterdam has brought it into the realm of reality and has given us one more thing to worry about and fear (presentation slides PDF). One of the two technologies he abused is the Automatic Dependent Surveillance-Broadcast (ADS-B), which sends information about each aircraft (identification, current position, altitude, and so on) through an on-board transmitter to air traffic controllers, and allows aircrafts equipped with the technology to receive flight, traffic and weather information about other aircrafts currently in the air in their vicinity. The other one is the Aircraft Communications Addressing and Reporting System (ACARS), which is used to exchange messages between aircrafts and air traffic controllers via radio or satellite, as well as to automatically deliver information about each flight phase to the latter. Both of these technologies are massively insecure and are susceptible to a number of passive and active attacks. Teso misused the ADS-B to select targets, and the ACARS to gather information about the onboard computer as well as to exploit its vulnerabilities by delivering spoofed malicious messages that affect the'behavior' of the plane

Samsung is something of a specialist when it comes to creating devices on the large side. The 4.8-inch screen on its best-selling Galaxy S III was increased to five-inches on the Galaxy S4, while its sister Note II handset sports 5.5-inches.
With what seems to be an insatiable appetite for girth, Samsung is thought to be working on a 6.3-inch phablet, according to ET News.
Codenamed 'Project Möbius,' the phablet (phone and tablet hybrid) could land in June, and is expected to feature a dual-core processor, 2MP full-HD front-facing camera and an 8MP rear camera.
A spokesperson from Samsung's mobile communications division, said: "As of now, smartphones and smart pads are separate gadgets, but the two will converge into one product under Project Möbius."
Huawei unleashed the 6.1-inch Ascend Mate earlier in the year at CES, while phablet shipments have spiked 136 per cent year-on-year.

Makeover boasts better visuals, simplified payment procedures and ease of use.
This time last month Google Play celebrated its first birthday, touting 700,000 apps, five million e-books and 18 million songs. And now, Google says its app store has been given a new look, which is currently rolling out to Android phones and tablets running Froyo and above, with users receiving it in the coming weeks.
Google Play, of course, was originally the Android Market, but last year's rebranding was in a bid to encourage users to see it as an engaging hub for entertainment.
Michael Siliski, group product manager for Google Play, said: "Whether you’re in the mood to listen to Justin Timberlake’s new album or discover a new game to play, you want the experience of finding and making your purchase to be quick and easy. The new design focuses on bigger images that jump off the page. Similarly themed content is grouped together so you can hone in on a magazine to read or an app to try.
"As you move down the page, new recommendations continue to appear so there is always more to see and explore. We’ve also simplified purchasing so you can breeze through checkout and get to enjoying your movie rental or other content."

Japanese website Macotakara has released a report suggesting that Apple’s next iPhone will come in five colours.
The site believes that the iPhone 5S as well as Apple’s rumoured cheaper iPhone will both be available in a variety of colours, including the original black and white.
This would mean the iPhone is finally following in the footsteps of Apple’s range of iPods which are now available in numerous colours including black, white, yellow, blue and pink. Its 5th gen iPod even has a special edition version in red.
Macotakara also reports that the new handset will be announced in July, with a release in August. This is in keeping with a number of other rumours suggesting we will see Apple’s next gen iPhone in the summer.

April 10th, 2013, 23:43 Posted By: wraggster
Samsung's Galaxy has topped Apple's flagship iPhone in a new survey, which polled users to rate each device's ease of use.
Conducted by Siegel+Gale, the surrey found users to rate the Samsung Galaxy for simplicity over the iPhone.
Over 400 individuals were polled as part of the survey, as respondents were found to value the Galaxy for its "easy-to-use advanced features – from high-speed file transfers to instant photo-tagging and sharing – making it simpler for users to share information."
"By being compatible with nonproprietary apps and accessories, the Galaxy came across as simpler to the many people we surveyed," concluded Siegel+Gale.
The firm cites one respondent in particular, who claimed: "Samsung Galaxy is a significant threat to iPhone because it is able to do more – and do it more simply – than iPhone."
However, whilst Samsung chalked up a win in terms of individual products, Sigel+Gale's Global Brand Simplicty Index placed Apple as a brand above its South Korean rival.
The result would indicate that whilst users found the Galaxy device simpler to use than the iPhone, they found Apple's entire portfolio of products simpler to use than those of Samsung.
"At the brand level, Apple is perceived as simpler than Samsung, but on a product level, challenger Galaxy has knocked the long-standing simplicity champion onto the canvas and out of first place," said Sigel+Gale.

XCOM: Enemy Unknown won't go down the common iOS route of charging for upgrades, items and the like, mainly because the game's lead designer can't stand the idea. Firaxis' Jake Solomon made the blunt disclosure to IGN, reaffirming the upcoming mobile version of the 2012 strategy game is a straight port.
"Oh God, please...," Solomon responded to IGN when asked about in-app purchases like power-ups, "No. I'm not sure I would be able to sleep at night. My food would taste like ashes in my mouth."
Solomon told us last month the iOS version, due this summer, is "the exact same game [as on PC or consoles], it's just now fully playable on an iPhone or an iPad." Given that it's the full game, it'll be "appropriately" priced at a premium point, although we're still waiting to see what that is. The iOS version will include the Elite Soldier DLC but not the Slingshot pack, while the Second Wave update remains a possibility.

Lusting after Apple's giant, yet shockingly thin 27-inch iMac? The object of your desire just got a little cheaper -- well, as long as you don't mind refurbished goods. The extra large all-in-one is the latest Apple product to hit the company's certified refurbishedstore, offering as much as $270 the product's regular price. The iMac's 2.9GHz Core i5 base model can be had for $1,529, replete with 8GB of RAM, a 1TB HDD and that luxuriously large 2560 x 1440 display. Apple is also offering refurbished versions of the 3.2Ghz model for $1,699 and 3.4GHz Core i7 rigs for $1,869 and $2,199, depending on the configuration. As always, Cupertino promises that the machines have gone through a rigorous restoration process, but offers a included one-year warranty to put the concerns of cautious buyers to rest. Mosey on over to the source link to consider your savings. Still too rich for your blood? Well, there is a 21-inch model, too.

If you want a (semi) pocketable S Pen experience, well, then the 5.5-inch Galaxy Note II is the device for you. If you want something more akin to carrying around a digital legal pad, there's the well proportioned Note 10.1. But if one note is too small for you, and the other too big, then maybe the Note 8.0 is just right. The mid-sized tablet, announced at MWC, is finally hitting American shores on April 11th for $400. Under the hood are the same powerful internals we got a good look at in Barcelona, including the 2GB of RAM and 1.6GHz quad-core processor. But, sadly, Samsung removed the cellular radios for the US variant -- which means this slate as a comically large phone. Well, at least the lack of HSPA+ should mean that the 4,600 mAh battery should last a little bit longer. You'll be able to pick up the Galaxy Note 8.0 in just a few days from all usual suspects (Best Buy, Amazon, Newegg, and so on). If you need a proper reminder of all its various specs and features, check out the preview and the PR after the break.

This week, the team at Digia rolled out the first alpha release of Qt 5.1, which is slated to have the first round of support for Android and iOS, with full support coming in 5.2. The goal is to make 5.1 completely usable for building complete, shippable apps for both mobile platforms. That means Qt can now be used to build native, smooth applications on Linux, Windows, Android, iOS, MacOS X and even BlackBerry 10, all with an excellent integrated development environment – QtCreator. Coming with version 5.1 is also something called 'Qt Quick Controls' — which is a set of nice, reusable user interface controls. Currently, it is focused on Desktop applications, but is expanding to add touchscreen-specific features. And, importantly, this release also brings 'Qt Sensors' into play. 'Qt Sensors' are pretty much exactly what they sound like — access to hardware sensors on devices where they are available, with built-in motion gesture recognition. Definitely a big plus for Android and iOS applications.

Frank X. Shaw, VP of Corporate Communications at Microsoft, did not seem happy about Facebook's Home announcement when he wrote, 'I tuned into the coverage of the Facebook Home event yesterday and actually had to check my calendar a few times. Not to see if it was still April Fools Day, but to see if it was somehow still 2011. Because the content of the presentation was remarkably similar to the launch event we did for Windows Phone two years ago.' Shaw also posted Microsoft's 'Put people first with Windows Phone 7.5' video before writing, 'We understand why Facebook would want to find a way to bring similar functionality to a platform that is sadly lacking it

concealment writes with news that a court battle has brought to light details on how the FBI's "stingray" surveillance tool works, and how they used it with Verizon's help to collect evidence about an alleged identity thief. Quoting:"Air cards are devices that plug into a computer and use the wireless cellular networks of phone providers to connect the computer to the internet. The devices are not phones and therefore don’t have the ability to receive incoming calls, but in this case Rigmaiden asserts that Verizon reconfigured his air card to respond to surreptitious voice calls from a landline controlled by the FBI. The FBI calls, which contacted the air card silently in the background, operated as pings to force the air card into revealing its location. In order to do this, Verizon reprogrammed the device so that when an incoming voice call arrived, the card would disconnect from any legitimate cell tower to which it was already connected, and send real-time cell-site location data to Verizon, which forwarded the data to the FBI. This allowed the FBI to position its stingray in the neighborhood where Rigmaiden resided. The stingray then "broadcast a very strong signal" to force the air card into connecting to it, instead of reconnecting to a legitimate cell tower, so that agents could then triangulate signals coming from the air card and zoom-in on Rigmaiden’s location. To make sure the air card connected to the FBI’s simulator, Rigmaiden says that Verizon altered his air card’s Preferred Roaming List so that it would accept the FBI’s stingray as a legitimate cell site and not a rogue site, and also changed a data table on the air card designating the priority of cell sites so that the FBI’s fake site was at the top of the list."

New update to support display resolution and five-inch smartphones
Windows Phone 8 will support 1080p resolution displays by the end of the year, according to a report.
Speaking to The Verge, sources “familiar with Microsoft’s Windows Phone plans” said the computing giant would release a new update later this year enabling support for the resolution and new five-inch smartphones.
Displays currently support by Windows Phone 8 include 720p, WVGA and WXGA.
The new update, also known as general distribution release 3 for Windows Phone, will also provide support for new quad-core Qualcomm processors.
The news comes as Microsoft looks to gain ground on Apple and Android, with devices such as the Samsung Galaxy S4 expected to adopt a 1080p display.
