April showers might bring May flowers, but the only precipitation we really care for around here is that of flagship handsets into stores. In that case, it's time to break out the raincoats: the HTC One is officially on sale at AT&T and Sprint as of today. Both carriers and their resellers are offering the aluminum wunderkind in its silver guise at $200 on contract for a 32GB model, with AT&T still holding the US exclusive on a $300 64GB version. Those jonesing for different hues or radios will have to wait a little while longer, however. The T-Mobile edition won't officially land until the 24th, and a black 32GB model is still "weeks" away from landing at AT&T and Sprint. Provided you're not the exception to the rule, though, you're cleared to buy what's arguably the first US-bound flagship of the year.

It was only a matter of time, we suppose, before OUYA found itself on Uncle Sam's table, and the day has finally come, as the open source console has made its way through the FCC. As we've steadily uncovered all of OUYA's secrets since its inception, there's not much new revealed by the government's testing. That said, the flayed OUYA appears to be a founding backer edition, with the names of the chosen 11 inscribed on one side, but it's exchanged the opaque power button on top for a clear unit -- indicating that perhaps retail OUYA's will make it easier for owners to tell when the thing's on. Want to see the full monty for yourself? Theres's plenty of pictures of the OUYA's insides at the source link below.

AT&T subscribers might not have to worry that their Sprint, T-Mobile and US Cellularfriends will tease them while they're waiting for their Galaxy S 4 to arrive. While Big Blue was originally promising an April 30th date for the headlining Android phone, the carrier has quietly moved up its shipping estimate to April 23rd, right on time for the initial wave of US releases. Yes, that's only a week's difference -- but first-kid-on-the-block bragging rights surely matter, don't they?

We're still waiting to see Cox's next generation cable TV-to-mobile streaming app, but right now it's released a version of its existing Cox TV Connect app for Android. Available on iPads since the end of 2011 and on iPhone / iPod touch since the end of last year, it's finally made the trek to a "select" group of Android tablets, consisting of the Nexus 7 and Samsung Galaxy 2 / Galaxy Note slates. A support document also mentions Amazon's Kindle Fire family, however the app isn't in its store as of this posting. For those not familiar, it's a free app for subscribers that lets them watch a selection of live TV channels while connected to their home wireless network, and view listings anywhere. We'll be interested to see if the list of compatible (Android 4.0+) hardware grows quickly, or if users will need to wait for a port of the new app whichadds personalization features tied into Cox's Trio DVR platform.

As the Wall Street Journal reports, the landscape for marketing a mobile app is rapidly changing. Game developers can no longer rely on word of mouth to get their games to the public. Instead, they now have to spend millions on marketing and cross-promotion.For example, when 2011′s Cut the Rope was launched, developer ZeptoLab UK spent “almost nothing” on marketing their new game. Soon, it was a worldwide success. Now, with the release of sequel Cut the Rope: Time Travel, the company has spent somewhere in the vicinity of $1 million in promotion materials, including a web series, T-shirts, plushies, and even a promotion at Burger King. This is in no way atypical for some of the more successful game developers, and all of that is done in hopes that the new games get featured on a variety of app stores, causing that oh-so-important spike in early sales.Cut the Rope: Time Travel launched yesterday, and is currently sitting at the top of the Paid app list on the iPhone App Store.

Santiago and company hit milestone for crowdfunded hardware
The company behind upcoming ÂŁ99 console, Ouya, has signed up 10,000 developers for the system worldwide.
At the end of March, CEO Julie Uhrman said the company had enlisted 8,000 developers. Now, less than a month later, the firm’s recently hired head of developer relations, Kellee Santiago has told GamesIndustry that Ouya has hit this 10,000 developer milestone.
“It’s really awesome, especially at this early stage of the console still being in the preview period,” said Santiago.
“The last month I’ve been so excited to just interact with the Ouya developers who are really people who signed on to the mission statement of Ouya early on and are the people who are just as excited as we are about the platform. It's been great to hear and that the number continues to grow at such a rapid pace is very validating.”
So far, games for the micro-console, which based on Google’s Android operating system, have appeared to be somewhat ouygh and ready, but Santiago said this is to be expected at this stage.

Android tablets cutting into Apple’s ownership.
While the iPad may still be able to lay claim to dominion over the UK tablet market, the growing popularity of Android tablets has led to a ten per cent dip in market share for Apple, according to YouGov’s Quarterly Tablet Tracker for Q1.
The report shows that Apple’s market share has fallen from 73 per cent to 63 per cent in the first quarter, despite the recent releases of it fourth generation iPad and iPad Mini.
Meanwhile, Samsung has more than doubled its market share, rising from four per cent in Q1 2012 to ten per cent in Q1 2013.
The arrival of two new devices on the scene has also contributed to Apple’s decline, with the Google Nexus 7 amassing a market share of eight per cent in under a year and the Amazon Kindle Fire jumping to five per cent from just one per cent in the previous quarter.
YouGov’s Quarterly Tablet Tracker also revealed that over 18 per cent of the UK adult population – that’s more than eight million adults - now own a tablet device, marking an increase of five per cent since Q4 2012.
John Gilbert, Consulting director of YouGov Technology and Telecoms, commented: “With a growing market, greater competition and falling prices, Apple was bound to lose some share. However, it is not simply a matter of inexpensive products flooding the market. It seems that Apple no longer has a monopoly on the “premium” share as other brands emerge with near-equal satisfaction scores. Given the market’s current expectations and considerations in purchasing tablets, we anticipate Apple to lose additional share throughout the coming year to Samsung, Google and Amazon.”

Affected apps downloaded between two and nine million times.
BadNews, a new malware family identified by mobile security firm Lookout, has been found in 32 apps from four different developers in the Google Play Store.
Masquerading as an aggressive, albeit innocent ad network, BadNews utilises its ability to trigger application installation prompts and display fake new messages to push out other types of monetisation malware and promote affiliated applications.
The combined affected apps have been downloaded between two million and nine million times, according to Google Play statistics. And, while not all earlier versions of these apps contain malicious code, BadNews poses a serious risk to a significant number of users.
It is also capable of leaking personal information, such as the user’s phone number and device identifiers, including the IMEI.
So, if you’re an Android user, you’d be well advised to use discretion when downloading your apps, and make sure you only download apps from trusted developers. User’s are also encouraged to check permissions to verify the app’s functionality does as it says.

April 19th, 2013, 23:56 Posted By: wraggster
Apple has confirmed that a user's conversations with voice-recognition app Siri are stored for up to two years.
Responding to a report by Wired, which questioned the privacy of the Siri app, Apple spokesperson Tracy Muller explained how the firm handles the data inputted by users when using the technology.
It is understood that once a user inputs voice commands to Siri, the data is then uploaded and stored by Apple for analysis. The user is then assigned a random number, which is associated with future voice data.
Effectively, the method means data is untraceable to the original users, given that random numbers are used in favour of names and email addresses.
However, Muller also confirmed that the data is disassociated with a user six-months after its creation – or if a user simply disables Siri on their device. But whilst the links between the user and their data is severed, the information is still kept by Apple for a further 18 months.
Apple maintains that the stored information is kept only in order to better the Siri service – but even so, the program may still leave Apple with a large quantity of users' sensitive data.

Talk of a Galaxy S 4 Mini started while many of us were still processing the impact of its full-size cousin, but there was little to go on at first beyond unverifiable imagery and top-level specs. Thankfully, Samsung itself just removed some of the doubt through a user agent profile on its own website. While the code only references a previously suspected GT-i9190 handle (the Galaxy S III Mini is the GT-i8190), a 960 x 540 screen and an ARM11-compatible processor, those details are enough to suggest the tiny Life Companion is more than just a rumor -- and, not surprisingly, less powerful than the GS 4. Dutch site TechTastic even claims to have spotted the Galaxy S 4 Mini by name when searching for the GT-i9190's profile, although Samsung may have already scrubbed any such evidence. When previous rumors had the Mini surfacing not long after its bigger counterpart, we imagine it won't be long before we know if the handset exists as more than just a string of text.

The rumor about that more affordable iPhone just keeps coming back, but this time we're finally seeing some sort of progress. Courtesy of case manufacturer Tactus, we're apparently looking at the upcoming budget iPhone's polycarbonate shell, which was spotted at a factory that provides parts to Foxconn. It's the same story for the "iPad 5" case leak that Tactus published two days ago (the same day as our own scoop), so the company does seem to have a good contact for these kinds of goodies -- and it is a very competitive market, after all.
Compared to the old polycarbonate iPhone 3G and 3GS, this mysterious shell appears to have a flat back instead of the old curved one, meaning it should reduce manufacturing complexity and therefore the cost as well. Another notable difference is that the old volume rocker is split into two, and then there's also the LED flash that was absent on the old polycarbonate iPhones. Tactus adds that this body is slightly taller, wider and thicker than the iPhone 4 and 4S, but what we do struggle to believe is that apparently the same factory is producing this shell in black and white as well as blue, red and yellow. A decoy, perhaps? Only time will tell.

Brits accustomed to catching up on their shows with Sky Go likely don't want that seamless viewing experience broken just because they bought that latest 1080p-capable Android flagship. Thankfully, they won't have to. An update to the Android app now supports the HTC One, Xperia Z and the upcoming Galaxy S 4: while none of them will stream in 1080p, the software will at last do more than take up space. Those on the "merely" 720p-native RAZR HD can also tune in with the upgrade. Swing by Google Play for the update if you're a Sky subscriber with a shiny new device.

In response to a customer's question about Windows Phone plans, US Cellular used its official Facebook page to proclaim its intent to launch a WP8 device in the near future. While the representative specifically mentioned Windows 8 (sans "Phone"), we reached out to US Cellular for clarification. A company spokesperson confirmed our suspicions, stating that a device running the mobile platform will indeed be launching. We'll have to wait until next month to get additional details about it, but USCC customers biding their time for a WP8 smartphone will soon have the opportunity to grab one for themselves without making the move to a different carrier.

Research firm Interpret says that compares to $10.40 spent each month by home console gamers
Market research firm Interpret has released its semi-annual GameByte study, outlining the huge challenges that mobile developers face when it comes to monetization despite a quickly growing audience. The report indicates that the average gamer on smartphones and tablets spends $0.92 per month on full game apps, and only $0.79 per month on mobile in-game items. Success on mobile can be elusive, and this new data only reinforces what EEDAR's Jesse Divnich told us: devs must be prepared to support a variety of platforms, including next-gen consoles.
"In the US, 48 million people are actively engaged in smartphone and tablet gaming, more than double the 23 million playing free-to-play MMOs on PC," said Jason Coston, senior analyst at Interpret. "But the average spend is so much weaker for mobile games that the two business models generate comparable revenues."
Interpret pointed out that free-to-play MMO gamers spend about $3.25 each month, while subscription MMO players (to the extent that subscription MMOs are still around) spend $4.25 a month. None of these spends can match up with home consoles, however, as $10.40 a month is spent on average by players of traditional consoles.
The consoles' user base may be significantly smaller, but there's a clear advantage for developers since the money spent by players is almost always going to be higher. Conversely, only 47 percent of US mobile gamers paid for a full game app over a six-month period, Interpret found, and only 21 percent paid for in-game items. During that same period, 75 percent of retail console gamers paid for a physical console or PC game.
"The mobile game market may be a pretty big cookie jar," added Coston, "but the neck is rather narrow, the cookies are small, and there are a lot of hands trying to reach into the jar."
