Russian tech site hi-tech.mail.ru has leaked images and specs of what it believes to be yet another budget smartphone from Samsung called the Galaxy Core.
According to the site the phone has a 4.3-inch 800x480 display, dual-core 1.2GHz processor, 768MB RAM, 8GB of internal storage, 5MP rear camera and a 1,800mAh battery.
The Galaxy Core is likely to run Android 4.1 and the rumoured price is 14,000 Rubles (£290).
Samsung released a mini version of its Galaxy S3 model at the beginning of the year, and there are rumours that the firm will follow suit with a Galaxy S4 Mini to continue capitalising on the flagship’s popularity.
If the Core does get a release, it will most probably be an even more cut-down model than the Mini versions.

A new report from IDC reveals that more smartphones were shipped in Q1 2013 than features phones.
Vendors shipped a total of 518.6 million mobile phones in Q1, compared to 402.4 million units in Q1 2012 and 483.2 million in Q4.
"Phone users want computers in their pockets. The days where phones are used primarily to make phone calls and send text messages are quickly fading away," said Kevin Restivo, senior research analyst with IDC's Worldwide Quarterly Mobile Phone Tracker. "As a result, the balance of smartphone power has shifted to phone makers that are most dependent on smartphones."
"In addition to smartphones displacing feature phones, the other major trend in the industry is the emergence of Chinese companies among the leading smartphone vendors," noted Ramon Llamas, research manager with IDC's Mobile Phone team. "A year ago, it was common to see previous market leaders Nokia, BlackBerry (then Research In Motion), and HTC among the top five. While those companies have been in various stages of transformation since, Chinese vendors, including Huawei and ZTE as well as Coolpad and Lenovo, have made significant strides to capture new users with their respective Android smartphones."
Samsung continued to lead the worldwide smartphone market and shipped more units than the next four vendors combined (Apple, LG, Huawei and ZTE).

Strategy Analytics has released figures to show that global tablet shipments hit 40.6 million in Q1 2013, rising 117 per cent year-on-year from just 18.7m in 2012.
Apple continues to lead the market and bagged a 48.2 per cent share during the quarter, although that's down from the 63.1 per cent stronghold it commanded last year.
The figures have declined thanks to Android and Windows 8 tablets giving consumers more options to choose from, though growth of Microsoft-powered devices are said to be inhibited by high-end apps and market confusion.
Peter King, director of tablets at Strategy Analytics, said: "Demand for tablets among consumer, business and education users remains strong. Apple produced a solid performance this quarter as the Mini had its first full term and shipped a robust 19.5 million mixed iPads worldwide maintaining market leadership with 48 percent share during the first quarter of 2013.
"Android captured a record 43 percent share of global branded tablet shipments in Q1 2013, rising from 34 percent a year earlier. Global Android tablet shipments increase 177 per cent annually to 17.6 million units."

Sega's profanity-laden on-rails shooter House of the Dead: Overkill will make its way to iOS when the App Store refreshes tonight. Dubbed House of the Dead: Overkill - The Lost Reels, the universal iOS app is a remixed version of the 2009 Wii game broken down into three different "movies" – an initial purchase unlocks the first movie and finishing that will unlock the second, with an in-app purchase of $2 required to access the final campaign.
Controls are handled through three different methods. There's a virtual stick-and-reticle set-up and another using accelerometer controls, but the third option is most odd – a locked Frenzy Tap setting. Touch Arcade has been playing the game today and says it hasn't figured out how to unlock that third option yet, nor what exactly it is, but posits that it may be a tap-to-shoot style of play.
House of the Dead: Overkill - The Lost Reels should be available after iTunes updates tonight at 11 p.m. ET. The app is already live in the New Zealand territory and priced at $6.50 in New Zealand dollars, which comes out to about $5.50 here in the US.

You've already read our review and you're still convinced you need Samsung's latest Galaxy S smartphone as soon as humanly possible, eh? Well if you're on Verizon (or you'd like to be), the Galaxy S 4 goes up for pre-order starting tomorrow according to a tweet from Verizon's Twitter account. Of course, when you'll get it is another question altogether -- last we heard was "sometime in May," so take that as you will. May is pretty soon, right? In any case, you won't immediately be able to purchase the GS 4 anywhere: Sprint is reporting delays until some unknown date, while T-Mo-'s version isn't arriving until April 29. Meanwhile, AT&T is still planning for an April 25th launch for pre-order customers, and in-store on April 27th.
Update: Verizon PR rep Ken Muche has also confirmed on Twitter that the phone will run $199.99 after a $50 mail-in rebate on the usual two-year contract.

The tenth anniversary of the iTunes Store is looming on April 28th, and Apple wants to do more for the occasion than treat itself to a nice dinner. It just launched an interactive Decade of iTunes timeline (within iTunes itself, naturally) to remind us how far its music service has come since 2003. While the retrospective includes the expectedsales milestones, media links and plugs for iPods, it's surprisingly detailed: you, too, can learn that Morcheeba rocked the album charts when iTunes reached Scandinavia. Apple has fiercer competition these days that not surprisingly goes unacknowledged, but it's good to have at least some context for Cupertino's more recent achievements. Catch a taste of that early iTunes Store vibe after the break.

Mobile phone usage among teens far higher in UK than US.
The appetite for technology among teenagers across the UK appears to significantly more ferocious than that of its US counterparts, after eMarketer found that 81 per cent of UK teens use smartphones, as opposed to just 50 per cent in the US.
The new report from eMarketer also found that around 93 per cent of UK teens will use mobile phones in 2013.
It is also estimated that the current percentage of UK teens using smartphones could rise to as high as 96 per cent by 2017. Such penetration gains during this period will position teenagers as the age group with the second-highest penetration rate of all smartphone users.
However, while smartphone usage among US teens may be lagging behind that of UK teens, many teenagers from across the pond are in possession of a mobile phone of some sort.
Based on a study carried out during Q3 2012, Pew Research recently reported that 78 per cent of teens in the US own a mobile phone, while 23 per cent are in possession of a tablet.
Mary Madden, senior researcher for the Pew Research Center’s Internet Project and co-author of the report, said: "The nature of teens’ internet use has transformed dramatically — from stationary connections tied to shared desktops in the home to always-on connections that move with them throughout the day.
"In many ways, teens represent the leading edge of mobile connectivity, and the patterns of their technology use often signal future changes in the adult population."

The Japanese smartphone market is set top outstrip the PC market in 2014, according to telecompaper.
Citing data from the Japan Electronics and Information Technology Industries Association, the Nikkei has reported that PC shipments fell 1.1 per cent year-on-year to 11.15 million units in fiscal 2012.
In spite of the October launch of Microsoft's Windows 8 OS, PC shipments also dropped 8.3 per cent in yen terms to mark a second successive year of contraction.
IDC Japan has estimated that the smartphone market will grow by around nine per cent to JPY 1.53 trillion this year, which is almost on par with the firm’s forecast of JPY 1.58 trillion for the PC market.
Smartphones are expected to grow further to a JPY 1.55 trillion market in 2014.

April 25th, 2013, 00:11 Posted By: wraggster
In a surprise move by Apple, CEO Tim Cook has hinted that the firm will release a host of new products later this year and throughout 2014.
Whilst remaining tight-lipped over the devices to be expected, the CEO confirmed that Apple will introduce "exciting new categories" beginning later this year.
Cook make the statement during the firm's quarterly earnings call, which revealed Apple to have suffered a decline in profits, despite strong sales for both the firm's iPad and iPhone devices.
The rare decline for Apple saw its profits slip to $9.5 billion, down from the $11.6 billion achieved just a year ago. However revenue continued to rise to $43.6 billion, an increase on the previous year's Q2 effort of $39.19 billion.
Following the results, Cook made the admission that Apple's momentum of success had finally begun to slow down.
"We acknowledge our growth rate has slowed," said Cook.
It's comes as no surprise to see Apple confirm its work on new product categories, as analysts have long commented on the firm's recent lack of innovation – something that is viewed as the key reason behind the fall in profits.
Whilst consumers eagerly expect new iPad and iPhone devices, Cook's choice of "product categories" would indicate that Apple is looking to introduce a new device, potentially branching into the wearable tech category with the long-rumoured iWatch device.
Regardless of what the device's may be, it's obvious that Apple needs to do something in order to turn its fortunes around, particularly given that during Cook's time as CEO, the only new product from Apple has been the iPad mini – hardly the firm's finest example of innovation.

Sony is quickly developing a reputation as the tinkerer's phone maker of choice: it took on responsibility for maintaining AOSP on the Xperia S even when Google couldn't. Today, it's proving that commitment to open software by releasing an Android 4.2.2-based AOSP build for one of its 2013 flagships, the Xperia Z. The initial public version is rough and has to go without proprietary camera and cellular drivers, although it does support Bluetooth, GPS, SD storage, WiFi and a host of sensors. Developers and other experimenters can grab the necessary code on GitHub; the rest of us can stick to marginally safer CyanogenMod nightlies.

There's already a number of Amiga emulators for Android, but using them has so far required you to provide your own Amiga system files to actually get that emulation started. Cloanto's set out to change that today, though, releasing its Amiga Forever Essentials app for Android that comes complete with officially licensed ROM and OS files for the reasonable cost of one dollar. As the company explains, it worked with the makers of Amiga emulators like UAE4Droid, AnUAE4All, UAE4All2 to ensure thesystem files are auto-detected (you'll still need to use at least one of those other emulators in conjunction with Forever Essentials), and it's thrown in a few bonuses likeWorkbench 1.3 and the First Demos disk images to get you started. It also says that this is just the first of a planned series of "Essentials" packages for other platforms, but it has few specifics to share about those at the moment, saying only that it's hopeful it can "help make retrocomputing more accepted on other app stores."

Commander Shepard is not someone we expected to pop up in an Apple patent from 2009 (granted today), but here we are, staring into his icy visage. He and the rest of the Normandy's crew are used as just one example of a system that Apple patented, which turns game story choices into a unique comic book (nevermind the fact that Mass Effect comics exist on their own). Of course, like with so many of these patents, it's possible this system'll never see the light of day, but we'd like to detail it all the same for the sheer strangeness of its ambition.
Essentially, the results of a player's in-game choices are used to populate a post-game comic book-style story -- progress, character info, settings, dialogue, achievements and screenshots are all pumped into an algorithm alongside the results of said variables, metrics from your playthrough, and your performance therein. The comic could be pushed to the cloud directly from your game console or PC, according to images included with the patent, which could then be pulled back down to a variety of devices (a tablet it shown, as well as standard televisions and PC monitors). Apparently Apple couldn't identify a good storytelling example from its own iTunes App Store, as Commander Shepard and co. are the only example given of a game use case. Again, it's rather unlikely we'll see this stuff pop up in Apple products anytime soon (if ever), but it's quite a concept nonetheless. That watch patent, however ... that's another story.

Apple has been on a roll for, well, almost as long as we can remember. Basically since the debut of the iMac, the company has been riding a rocketship back from the brink of irrelevance. The iPod, iPhone and iPad have all led it to post record quarter, after record quarter, after record quarter. Now we're in the second quarter of financial year 2013 and it doesn't appear to be slowing down much. The company posted $43.6 billion in revenue during the quarter and net itself a handsome profit of $9.5 billion. While those numbers do represent the slowest rate of growth Cupertino has seen in years, it's hardly the fall from grace that some analysts were predicting. Compared to the same time last year, revenues are up from $39.2 billion though net income has dropped from the Q2 2012 mark of $11.6 billion. Still, the company managed to move more iPhones and iPads than it did during that quarter, and the drop from Q1's holiday-boosted numbers isn't particularly alarming. In total it moved 19.5 million iPads and 37.4 million iPhones during the three months ending on March 30th, 2013. In Q1 those numbers were an admitedly more impressive 22.9 milion and 47.8 million, respectively. But, compared to Q2 of 2012, things are still looking up from the 35.1 million iPhones and 11.8 million iPads shipped.
Things are a little less rosy around its non-iOS departments, but we'd hardly say the company was in dire straights. Mac sales were more or less flat both sequentially and year-over-year, falling just under four million units. Meanwhile, the iPod continued its steady decline, moving only 5.6 million units. That's not only more than a 50 percent drop from last quarter, but a 27 percent drop from the same period last year. The biggest contributor to Apple's revenue stream continues to be the iPhone, but the iPad is gaining fast and income from iTunes and its other software offerings continues to grow at an impressive rate.
While the first year-over-year drop in profits in almost a decade might give some investors pause, there's little cause for concern for the future of the company. Cupertino's healthy war chest now sits at $145 billion in cash, up from the $121 billion and change it had at the end of Q4 2012. We'll be listening in to the conference call at 5 PM and we'll update with any juicy tidbits after the break.

With the sudden rush of 5-inch (and larger) smartphones hitting the market -- tovarying degrees of success -- one may wonder if Apple plans to introduce one of its own. In response to a question on today's Q2 earnings call, CEO Tim Cook maintained his stance against such a move because of necessary tradeoffs in areas like resolution, white balance, quality, app compatibility and more. He stated specifically that Apple would not ship a larger phone "while such trade-offs exist," leaving just enough wiggle room for a future announcement where it can claim all those issues have been eradicated. Apple shipped the iPhone 5 with extended screen area and introduced a smaller iPad mini after Steve Jobs criticized other company's products in thosecategories -- we wouldn't be surprised if Cook is readying a similar move himself.

Never mind that a few developers spoiled the surprise last week: BlackBerry 10.1, BB10's first major OS update, is official today. The release arrives chiefly to support theBlackBerry Q10's hardware keyboard and smaller OLED screen, but it brings a swath of extra improvements that should please Z10 owners in equal measure. An HDR camera mode, which should fill out highlights and shadows in some photos, is just the start. The Hub now supports contact suggestions, PIN-to-PIN messaging and email with attached messages; notifications are more refined as well, with per-account message notifications joining options to define sound volumes and vibrations for each contact. Dive deeper and you'll also notice more granular text selection, better calendar viewing on the Z10 and the ability to copy phone numbers into (or from) the dialer. Do be patient if you're not bent on picking up a Q10, however -- the Z10 doesn't get its update until sometime in the weeks following the release of its keyboarded cousin.

The last time we saw new members of the Asha family they eschewed the usual QWERTY keyboard, opting instead for a full touchscreen. The newly announced (andpreviously teased) Asha 210, however, returns to the more tactile input method, and brings a healthy splash of color (five different ones, to be precise) plus a dual-SIM option along for the ride. As before, social networks feature heavily, but the focus clearly remains on low-end and developing markets. We know Nokia can do budget (and do it well), but is a full keyboard, a design update, and a dedicated WhatsAppbutton (all costing $72 SIM-free, excluding taxes when it lands late Q2) enough to make it appeal to anyone beyond the entry-level social addicts? Nokia was kind enough to show us the devices first hand, so head on past the break to see if we thought so.

We've seen a few UK carriers show their cards ahead of the Galaxy S 4 launch this weekend, but MVNO Virgin Media has been slightly coy with details compared to bigger peers like EE and Vodafone. Better late than never, we suppose: the provider has outlined just how much we'll have to spend to get Samsung's flagship. Customers who have Virgin broadband or TV services can pay the same £31 per month as their EE counterparts, getting a lower £99 device cost and insurance in exchange for a more limited service that includes 200 minutes, 500 texts and 500MB of data.

While the iPhone didn't even have a built-in FM radio to replace, Android hardware from all the major players has started to forgo the radio tuner in the last few years. Fortunately, Beeb listeners (at least) can finally access the iPlayer radio app, which has made the leap across from iOS. Not only will you be able to install it on your Android smartphone, but also Amazon's Kindle Fire tablet series. The new app doesn't use Flash, given its absence on most up-to-date versions of Google's mobile OS, instead using HLS (HTTP Live Streaming) to deliver your weekly doses of Doctor Who.
Meanwhile, the radio app's design has been given a rethink for its Android debut, following the design and navigation notions of Google's homemade apps and hopefully making sense to any seasoned Android 4.0 user. The BBC's Executive Producer James Simcock explains exactly what's been done differently at the source, but if you're not a "reading" kind of... reader, there's a trailer after the break.

The company also sold 19.5 million iPads in the quarter, but gross margins fell
[h=3]Apple Inc[/h]
Apple's latest earnings report was eagerly awaited, as the stock has been hammered lately with investor concerns over a possible slowdown in iPhone and iPad sales. Apple reported quarterly revenue of $43.6 billion and net profit of $9.5 billion, compared to last year's numbers of $39.2 billion in revenue and $11.6 billion in profit. The numbers appear to confirm analysts' fears that Apple's iPad Mini and the slew of new product introductions have attacked the company's gross margins, which sank to 37.5 percent compared to 47.4 percent a year ago. This is the first time since 2003 that Apple's quarterly profit has declined year-over-year.
The sales of iPhones continued to increase compared to last year, but just a bit; 37.4 million iPhones were sold in the quarter compared to 35.1 million last year. Mac sales were down, dropping to less than 4 million compared to 4 million last year. However, iPad sales rose to 19.5 million versus 11.8 million last year.
Apple is guiding to flat revenues with a slight decline in gross margin for the next quarter. Overall, though, CEO Tim Cook was careful to emphasize the positive. "The decline in stock price frustrating to all of us," said Cook. "We will continue to focus on the long term and remain very optimistic about our future." Cook also noted "the potential of exciting new product categories," which may lend some weight to rumors about an Apple smartwatch or a new, app-friendly Apple TV.
Apple's revenue from the iTunes store was strong, with apps setting a quarterly revenue record. App developers have received over $9 billion so far from Apple. Apple highlighted two app developers (both game companies) for exceptional performance. Backflip Studios, creators of DragonVale and many other games, has over 275 million downloads and are approaching $100 million in annual revenues with 95 percent of the revenue coming from iOS. Apple also noted Supercell's amazing performance from its founding in 2010; with only 2 games on iOS the company generated over $8.5 million in revenue per employee in 2012.
Apple also announced the largest stock buyback that any company has ever undertaken; the board has authorized the repurchase of $60 billion worth of Apple stock. Coupled with higher dividends, Apple expects to return over $100 billion to shareholders by 2015. Despite this, the company's stock edged downward in after-hours trading.
Apple continues to have strong iPhone sales and exceptional iPad sales, yet investors seem to be looking for indications that the company can create new product categories. Apple's not ready to show its hand, though. The next news will likely come at the company's developer conference in June, where a new version of iOS may be announced, and some indications of new hardware may appear.
