Google appears to be preparing the launch of a game center for Android with an unknown name. It looks like the new hub will sport a slew of features, including multiplayer support, in-game chat, lobbies, leaderboards, and achievements. The leaked information come to us courtesy of Android Police, which amusingly stumbled on the details by tearing apart the apk file for MyGlass, the Google Glass companion app that launched earlier this week. The feature list was hidden within, though it's not clear if this was done on purpose to build hype or entirely by accident."While on the topic of Google-branded Android hardware speculation, this wishlist at The Full Signal makes some feature-list pleas for therumored Nexus 5

F2P titles reflect long-term engagement while console games are more akin to film
Free-to-play games are like TV shows and console games are like films, says Peter Molyneux.
Speaking to Develop Editor Will Freeman at the F2P Summit, as transcribed by The Guardian, the industry icon compared the playing habits of free-to-play and console players to that of the TV and film industries.
Molyneux explained that console games are similar to films, as users would often play a title, and once they had finished their association with the game would be over.
He added that free-to-play games however more closely follow the model of a TV series, with the player constantly returning to play the title again.
"If you think of console games as the equivalent of films – you go to the cinema, you watch it, consume it, you're done with it – that's what I think console games are like," he said.

Rise of smartphones and a thriving app environment set to pave the way. Will you buy one?
Apple is supposedly working on the iWatch, Microsoft is also rumoured to be eyeing a second crack at the smart watch market, while Samsung has confirmed its wrist-based device is in development.
With mobiles seemingly moving from pockets to the arm, ABI Research predicts more than 1.2 million smart watches will be shipped this year. The company notes consumers have been disinterested in the devices over the past decade, with the accessories perhaps considered too bulky, sporting weak functionality, feeble battery life, or just plain ugly.
The report says the watches can be broken into four categories:
* Notification types offer alerts for incoming calls, messages and more.
* Voice operational smart watches enable users to conduct calls and speak some commands via the device, such as Martian’s smart watch.
* Hybrid smart watches offer cross functionality.
* Independent smart watches have the potential to be purchased as a standalone product without the need for a smartphone, and offer features that connect to other consumer devices like speakers, such as Italian smart watch maker, I’m Watch.
Joshua Flood, senior analyst, said: "The strong potential emergence of smart watches can be attributed to several reasons. Contributing factors include the high penetration of smartphones in many world markets, the wide availability and low cost of MEMS sensors, energy efficient connectivity technologies such as Bluetooth 4.0, and a flourishing app ecosystem.
"Smart watches that replicate the functionality of a mobile handset or smartphone are not yet commercially feasible, though the technologies are certainly being prepared."

New release comes with a host of enhancements and improvements.
Mobile ad network Millennial Media has announced the release of its new SDK for iOS and Android, which features a number of new features and improvements to make it easier for developers to monetise through advertising.
Millennial Media’s SDK 5.0 features a fully updated interface, designed to give developers greater flexibility and reduce the code required for implementation. It also comes with several other updates, including the removal the READ_PHONE_STATE permission for Android.
Furthermore, the new SDK is IAB MRAID 2.0 certified, providing developers with additional revenue potential as advertisers seek MRAID 2.0 compliant solutions for premium rich media campaigns.
Meanwhile, the integration with Facebook, Twitter and the App Store is aimed at delivering a seamless experience and assisting developers in keeping users engaged with their apps. So, when users interact with an ad using this functionality, they will be taken directly to Facebook, Twitter or the App Store to complete the action (“Like,” “Share,” “Tweet,” “Download App,” etc.) They will then be returned immediately to the developer’s app.
Developers can also make money from brand advertising campaigns that use Passbook to send boarding passes, tickets, etc. to the consumer’s device.
Additioanlly, SDK 5.0 does not utilise the UDID on iOS devices. Each Millennial Media iOS SDK released since version 4.5.5 in April of 2012 has been compliant with Apple’s decision to deprecate UDID.
Elsewhere, InMobi yesterday released a new iOS SDK in the form of SDK 370, following Apple’s announcement that UDID deprecation will be completed by May 1st.

5.6 million Lumia handsets shifted in first quarter.
A record-breaking Q1 performance from Nokia’s Lumia handsets was not enough to stop the Finnish manufacturer from experiencing a 25 per cent drop in net sales in the year’s first quarter.
Down 25 per cent to €2.9 billion in Q1 sequentially, Nokia’s net sales represented a year-on-year dip of 32 per cent, while overall smartphone sales dropped five per cent to €1.2 billion on the previous quarter and 32 per cent year-on-year.
Sales of feature phones also dipped to €1.6 billion, falling 36 per cent year-on-year and 31 per cent on Q4 2012.
However, Q1 wasn’t all negative for Nokia, having seen its Lumia smartphones ship an all-time high of 5.6 million units during the three-month period. This represents a 4.4 million rise on the previous quarter.
Nokia shifted a total of 11.1 million smartphones in Q1, of which just over 50 per cent were Lumia devices.
Nokia’s entire business saw sales hit a total of €5.85 billion in Q1, marking a 27 per cent downturn on Q4 2012 and a 20 per cent dip year-on-year. This overall loss of €257 million does, however, represent a distinct improvement on its Q1 2012 loss of €1.47 billion.
Nokia CEO Stephen Elop commented: “At the highest level, we are pleased that Nokia Group achieved underlying profitability for the third quarter in a row. While operating in a highly competitive environment, Nokia is executing our strategy with urgency and managing our costs very well.
“We have areas where we are making progress, and areas where we are further increasing the focus. For example, people are responding positively to the Lumia portfolio, and our volumes are increasing quarter on quarter. Nokia Siemens Networks delivered another strong quarter and contributed to an overall improvement in Nokia Group's cash position. On the other hand, our mobile phones business faces a difficult competitive environment, and we are taking tactical actions and bringing new innovation to market to address our challenges.”

The new Nokia phone is reported to have Pureview technology, a huge 41MP lens and a summer release date.
The Financial Times believes that the new Nokia device will measure five or six inches, meaning it could rival Samsung’s Galaxy Note ‘phablet’.
My Nokia Blog reports that there will be two versions of the smartphone, they will share the same features but will have different processors. One will have a dual core processor and the other a quad core processor based on Qualcomm 800 chipset.
According to reports, the PureView smartphone is expected to launch in July, along with a lighter more advanced version of the existing flagship Lumia 920.

KGI Securities analyst Ming-Chi Kuo believes Apple’s fifth-gen iPad will be substantially lighter and thinner than the current 9.7-inch model.
Kuo states that the next-gen device will measure around 7.5-8.0mm and be 15 per cent thinner than the iPad, and carry a GF2 touch panel and A7X processor, reportsAppleInsider.
The GF2 touchscreen will play a big part in slimming down the iPad and help reduce power consumption. Kuo also expects to see a 25 to 30 per cent decrease in battery size.
The next iPad is expected to come with a new A7-series SoC manufactured on Samsung’s 28 nanometer process and launch in August or September.

Apple shares fell yesterday when chip supplier Cirrus Logic revised its revenue forecasts.
Cirrus suggested blamed reduced demand on one customer – without naming them – but the investors have guessed Apple and sold shares accordingly.
The share price slipped down to under $400, the lowest level since 2011, before increasing slightly to $402.80 by the end of the day.
Cirrus Logic makes components for iPhone and iPad, and its latest figures suggest Apple may not be releasing a new phone or iPad any time soon.
Apple hasn’t commented, but will reveal Q1 results next week.

DigiTimes has reported that Apple has stopped placing component orders for its Mac series, leaving suppliers in the dark over when they will resume.
“Suppliers expected to finish digesting their Mac inventories in April, but are new stranded waiting for further instructions from Apple,” revealed sources from the upstream supply chain.
Apple usually gives suppliers a shipment forecast for the upcoming quarter, but the company has not provided a shipment forecast for Q2, concerning some supplier who worry that the shipments may not resume until late May.

One summer, when I was a kid, I wandered into a garage sale and came across an old Atari 2600 and a shoebox full of games. I don't remember how much they wanted for it, but it was low enough that a kid without a job could afford it, so it wasn't much. I took it home, immediately hooked it up to the television and started rifling through the games.
Most of the games were simple, executions of a single concept. Some of them were , some were passable but forgettable, while others were nigh indecipherable. Naturally, there were some genuine turkeys in there too. It was hard to be disappointed though, since I could just pop in another cartridge and, after all, the entire box of goodies had cost me practically nothing.
That summer day pretty much encapsulates my experience with the Ouya thus far.

Good news for Ouya Kickstarter backers (and anyone planning to buy a retail unit in June), a new firmware update will let you change your payment options. Previously, credit card information was locked into the associated Ouya account once it was entered. Now, users may change their credit card information at any time under account settings in the Manage menu.
The Ouya recently began shipping to Kickstarter backers as part of a public preview period, and today's update irons out one of the kinks cited in ourreview of the console's current state.

After concern about a slipped shipping date proved erroneous, HP's Android-packingSlate 7 has popped up at the company's UK store with a £129 price tag and a promise of availability on May 1st. That's pretty much in line with the date originally scheduled for the 7-inch, 1,024 x 600, 1GB RAM, dual-core A9 Jelly Bean device, though the VAT brings the price up to roughly $200, while HP said would it be $170 in the US before taxes. There's no word yet on exactly when you'll be able to grab the Slate 7 stateside, but HP's US site (at the More Coverage link) is still saying April. Meanwhile, Brits can pre-order at the source link.

US launch details for the Galaxy S 4 are arriving at last, and both Sprint and T-Mobile are on the vanguard. The two carriers plan to sell Samsung's flagship for $150 in 16GB form, albeit with different pricing strategies: T-Mobile's plan includes its now-standard device payment installments, while Sprint is discounting the phone from its normal $250 price through a $100 instant credit for those switching to the network. Just when you'll have the chance to plunk money down also varies. Sprint plans to offer pre-orders starting on April 18th, with an actual launch on April 27th. T-Mobile isn't giving customers the same opportunity to buy in advance, although they will get to take the Galaxy S 4 home a few days earlier, on April 24th. We're still waiting on other American carriers to hop on the bandwagon, but we suspect it won't be long.

Chalk up another one: in sync with Sprint and T-Mobile, US Cellular has joined the ranks of US carriers detailing their Galaxy S 4 launch plans. The mid-size provider won't commit to a more specific timeframe for its launch beyond "late April," but it's already taking pre-orders for a 16GB edition at $200 with a contract and a steep $750 contract-free. That last detail prices it above AT&T's offering, although US Cellular is sweetening the pot by giving away an S View Cover to those willing to buy sight unseen. The news leaves just Cricket, C Spire and Verizon without mostly complete Galaxy S 4 plans -- let's hope they pick up the pace.

Pikoro writes with news that Foxconn's parent company has entered into an agreement to pay Microsoft royalties for every Android device they manufacture, joining a rather long list of companies licensing patents for Android/Linux from Microsoft. From the BBC:"Microsoft has secured a patent deal with the world's biggest consumer electronics manufacturer to receive fees for devices powered by Google's Android and Chrome operating systems. Hon Hai — the parent company of Foxconn — said the deal would help prevent its clients being caught up in an ongoing intellectual property dispute. Microsoft says that Google's code makes use of innovations it owns. Google alleges its rival's claims are based on 'bogus patents.' 'The patents at issue cover a range of functionality embodied in Android devices that are essential to the user experience, including: natural ways of interacting with devices by tabbing through various screens to find the information they need; surfing the web more quickly, and interacting with documents and e-books.'"

The American Civil Liberties Union filed a complaint with the U.S. Federal Trade Commission on Wednesday calling on the federal government to take action to stem an epidemic of unpatched and insecure Android mobile devices – declaring the sea of unpatched and vulnerable phones and tablets 'defective and unreasonably dangerous.' The civil liberties group's complaint for injunctive relief with the FTC (PDF), notes that 'major wireless carriers have sold millions of Android smartphones to consumers' but that 'the vast majority of these devices rarely receive software security updates.' The ACLU says carriers leave their customers vulnerable to malware and spear phishing attacks that can be used to record or transmit information on the device to' third parties. 'A significant number of consumers are using smartphones running a version of the Android operating system with known, exploitable security vulnerabilities for which fixes have been published by Google, but have not been distributed to consumers' smartphones by the wireless carriers and their handset manufacturer partners,' the ACLU said. Android devices now account for close to 70 percent of new mobile devices sold. The porous security of many of those devices has become a topic of concern. The latest data from Google highlights the challenge facing the company, with just over 25% of Android users running versions 4.1 or 4.2 – the latest versions of the OS, dubbed 'Jelly Bean,' more than six months after its release. In contrast, 40% of Android users are still running the 'Gingerbread' release – versions 2.3.3 through 2.3.7, a two year-old version of the operating system that has known security vulnerabilities.

Rolocule Games at work on new iOS motion gaming project
Rolocule Games today announced its next project – rolomotion, which combines the iPhone and Apple TV to bring a motion-gaming experience to your TV without the need for a dedicated console.
The Pune-based studio had secured a round of angel funding last year, but has been laying low on its follow-up to the award-winning Flick Tennis: College Wars, which released in 2011.
Rolomotion is designed to let users play their iPhone/iPod Touch games on their TVs via Apple TV using what appears to be some form of AirPlay Mirroring.
So far, only one game has been announced for rolomotion – Motion Tennis, which you can see in action in the video below. The game will also feature a multiplayer mode, which will of course require two iOS devices, and will track calories burnt during game sessions.

Clash of Clans and Hay generate $179 million in first quarter of 2013
Supercell’s astronomic growth shows no sign of abating as it reveals it is now making $2.4 million a day from just two games.
As reported by Forbes, last year the Finland-based free-to-play developer grossed $100 million from Clash of Clans and Hay Day, but this year it has already nearly doubled its total revenue for 2012 by making $179 million in just the first quarter.
After Apple took its share, the company still took away $104 million.
The developer also recently raised between $100m-to-$150m in a funding round, valuing the company near $800 million.
The amount of revenue generated through its titles is up significantly from January, when the studio announced it was raking in $1 million a day. The numbers also put Supercell in close company with GungHo’s hugely popular Puzzle & Dragons, which is believed to be making the studio $2 million a day.

Former Android-only feature adapted for Apple devices.
Facebook Home was revealed a couple of weeks ago, and the company was very excited about the Chat Headscommunications feature, which allows users to respond to Facebook messages and texts while using other apps.
Of course, this was an Android-only product, but Facebook has announced Chat Heads for iPhones and iPads as part of a new iOS update. However, the feature only works while using Facebook when browsing photos, News Feed and so on, so it doesn't have quite the widespread reach of the Google counterpart.
Another additional feature includes stickers, allowing users to add a touch more character to their messages. Chat Heads and stickers will roll out in the coming weeks, while the recently announced News Feed makeover will also be included.
The introduction of Chat Heads comes following Facebook's director of product Adam Mosseri revealing the company is in talks with Apple and Microsoft about taking Facebook Home to iOS and Windows.

Two billion users expected within the next two years.
Android could soon be boasting more than one million users within the next six-nine months, according to Google’s executive chairman Eric Schmidt, who also said that the two million mark could be met “within a year or two,” Mobile World Live has reported.
The recent Dive into Mobile event saw Schmidt state that there are now over 750 million Android devices in use today, and that there are and additional 1.5 million activations every day.
Schmidt also suggested that there is significant potential for the platform in emerging markets, “especially as prices fall.”
Commenting on the rapid speed with which new technology reaches the market, and the subsequent drop in prices for previously cutting-edge features, he noted that Android’s growth in emerging markets will be supported by the arrival “a new generation of very low-cost Android phone manufacturers… primarily from Asia.”
“A relatively inexpensive smartphone with a strong and good browser is sort of what you need to access the world’s information. That’s what people need, that’s what they are going to get,” Schmidt added.
