Don't get too attached to that collection of TecTiles if you're upgrading to a Galaxy S 4.AnandTech has discovered that Samsung's newer phone includes an NFC chipset that can't read the older TecTiles, which rely on a less common tag type to register our taps instead of the NFC Forum's standards. Customers aren't being left in a bind, however. Samsung has confirmed that it's about to release a follow-up, TecTile 2, which adheres to the official format while supporting the company's older NFC-equipped phones. The fully modernized tags will be ready sometime in the "coming weeks." That doesn't offer much immediate relief for GS3-to-GS4 upgraders whose TecTile layouts have suddenly been reduced to decorations, but those buyers should at least get the replacements they seek before long.

Better start working on those powerball exercises. If Samsung's Galaxy Mega was the thing you thought your life was missing, it's just landed at the FCC. Yeah, we knowthis isn't the first time, but this second go-round it's the LTE-sporting GT-i9205 model. The usual lab tests show little that we didn't know already -- unless you didn't know it had LTE Band 5, dual band WiFi, NFC or GSM 850 / 1900. As the 5.8-inch isn't 4G-enabled, this means we're looking at the bigger 6.3-inch version, but still no word on if, when or how a version might land on US shores. Still no harm in limbering up, though, is there?
Update: Upon further inspection, this variant only uses LTE band 5 (850MHz), which no US carrier currently uses. It's very unlikely this I9205 variant will hit the US.

What a strange message to read on the digital dashboard display of your car. This is proof that [Kristoffer Smith] was able to control the ODB-II bus on his Eagle Grand Cherokee.
He’s not just doing this for the heck of it. It stems from his goal of adding an Android tablet on the dashboard which has been a popular hack as of late. This left [Kristoffer] with steering wheel controls that did nothing. They originally operated the radio, so he set out to make them control the tablet.
He had seen an Arduino used to control the CAN bus, but decided to go a different route. He grabbed a USB CAN bus interface for around $25. The first order of business was to use it with his computer to sniff the data available. From there he was able to decode the traffic and figure out the commands he needed to monitor. The last piece of the puzzle was to write his own Android code to watch for and react to the steering wheel buttons. You can check out the code at his repository and see the demo after the break.

Outbound Intel CEO Paul Otellini created quite a stir when mentioning that touchscreen laptops would reach a $200 price point. CNET is now reporting in an interview with Intel chief product officer Dadi Perlmutter that these touchscreen laptops will run Android on Intel Atom processors at first. 'Whether Windows 8 PCs hit that price largely depends on Microsoft, he said. "We have a good technology that enables a very cost-effective price point," Perlmutter said. The price of Windows 8 laptops "depends on how Microsoft prices Windows 8. It may be a slightly higher price point." ... Perlmutter didn't specify what the Android notebooks will look like, but it's probable they'll be convertible-type devices. He also noted that he expects the PC market to pick up in the back half of the year and heading into 2014 as new devices become available

On April 28, 2003, Apple launched the iTunes Music Store. In their original press release, they called it 'revolutionary,' in typical PR fashion. As the service reaches its 10th anniversary, it seems they were actually correct. From The Verge: 'At launch, it was Mac-only and offered a relatively tiny catalog: 200,000 songs (it currently has 26 million). But it did have the support of the major record labels of the day: Universal, EMI, Warner, Sony, and BMG. The partnerships were key to helping Apple take control of music distribution — without the songs, the iPod was a nicely designed but empty box. ... Jobs certainly had his challenges. Vidich said he's the one who suggested that iTunes charge 99 cents per track and he remembers Jobs nearly hugged him. At the time, Sony Music execs wanted to charge more than $3 a track, according to Vidich. No doubt a $3 song price would have tied an anchor around iTunes' neck, stifling growth. 99 cents, on the other hand, was below the sub-$1 psychological barrier — and has continued to be an important price point for not only music but the wide swath of 99-cent iOS apps in the store. ... Apple bet that the majority of consumers wouldn't have an issue with its lock-in tactics, and it bet correctly.

Inventory delays may stifle prospective Galaxy S 4 owners, but such pesky hurdles appear to have little effect on Android's development community. An XDA-Developersmember by the name of "djrbliss" has constructed a root exploit for Snapdragon-powered variants (see: all US carrier versions) of Samsung's newly christened flagship. While burrowing into your phone's software always carries some risk, the bold will find a complete how-to at the source link below.

Samsung's latest and greatest smartphone, the Galaxy S 4, is making a big move into the US today with an online arrival at Sprint and in-store availability at AT&T. If you're a Now Network subscriber and happened to miss out on the carrier's pre-order action, you might want to make some quick moves onto Sprint's website in order to secure your new handset, which goes up for sale at midnight Central Time. In a not-so-cool move, however, only those porting their number to Sprint are eligible for the carrier's $100 price break, which means all of you who've stuck through the dark days of EV-DO will need to pony up $249.99 for the Galaxy S 4. Meanwhile, if you're aching to lay your hands on Samsung's 1080p handset, you can finally get some gratification, as AT&T is now offering the smartphone for in-store purchase and play. Here, you'll pay $199.99 for the handset, and while it's potentially more expensive, at least AT&T's pricing scheme doesn't involve fine print shenanigans.

Excuse us while we interrupt your episode of The Archers, but we thought users of BBC's iPlayer might like to know about the latest Android app update. Amongst the usual bug fixes, the update promises to offer a "much improved" viewing experience on big hitting devices such as Samsung's Galaxy S III and Note 2, plus the Nexus 4. The Beeb stopped short of spilling further details, but it does go on to confirm that it'll continue to apply spit-and-polish to the playback experience for as much hardware as it can, without having to wait for app updates. We hope this doesn't mean it'll be treading on any toes, of course. Fans of slightly bigger screens (which is more of you, apparently) can expect some attention soon, with a hat tip about a tablet update coming in the next release.

Etsy stickers adorning your MacBook's lid, oft making a cute play on the presence of that glowing Apple? That's so 2012. Uncover, a Dutch company showcasing its talents here at The Next Web Conference in Amsterdam this week, has crafted a new method of customizing one's MacBook lid. And, perhaps most importantly, it involves the seamless removal of the Apple logo altogether. In essence, these guys use a specialized laser cutting process that can etch out anything your brain can muster -- from band logos to company mantras. And, as you'll see in the gallery below, the Apple logo doesn't have to be a part of the equation.
The outfit will take in any aluminum-faced MacBook from around the world, and once it lands in Holland, you'll typically see it headed back to your domicile within four to five days. If you're selecting one of Uncover's designs, you can have your machine tweaked for as little as €249 (around $325), while completely custom work starts at €599 ($780). (And yes, you can just buy a totally new Mac from Uncover as well.) We spoke to Jasper Middendorp, the company's CEO, and he confessed that only MacBooks are being accepted due to Apple's unique backlighting arrangement. They're obviously keen to offer similar work for PCs, but to date, every one he has seen blocks or covers the backlight in some way. For those looking to get it on the fun, allow the source link below to be your guide.

If you're an Android user who prefers Viber for VoIP and messaging, you may not want to leave your phone unattended in the near future. Bkav Internet Security has discovered an exploit that will bypass the lock screen on Android phones new and old (including the Nexus 4) as long as pop-up notifications are active. While the exact actions vary from phone to phone, all that's really needed is an incoming message or two, a handful of taps and the back button to reach the home screen. App users can disable the pop-ups as a short-term workaround, although they thankfully won't have to do that for long when Viber promises that a patch is on the way. There's only a small chance that a malicious attacker will both get their mitts on your phone and know that you've got Viber installed, but we'd advise against using statistical probability as a security measure.

Remember the leaked GT-i9502, that dual-SIM variant of the Galaxy S 4 that ultimately confirmed many rumors? That smartphone at last exists beyond a collection of photos, as Samsung just launched it for China Unicom customers. The support for an extra cellular line is naturally the highlight, although there's another perk for GS4 connoisseurs: the i9502 has the same 1.6GHz Exynos 5 Octa processor as the i9500, which might eke out more performance than the Snapdragon 600 models. There isn't any word on whether or not the i9502 edition will leave China, although we wouldn't count on European or North American editions when there isn't LTE inside to please 4G-obsessed carriers.

Samsung Gulf president Young Soo Kim reportedly made casual mention of an upcoming rugged take on the Galaxy S 4 at a press event earlier in the week, but left out any details. Sources for the Wall Street Journal claim to know more of the story, and it sounds like the toughened phone won't be alone this summer. The Galaxy S 4 Active, as it's rumored to be called, would arrive in July and carry the dust- and waterproofing of spiritual predecessors like the Galaxy Xcover 2 while maintaining the GS 4's design language. A smaller, 4.3-inch parallel to the GS 4 would appear at the same time -- Galaxy S 4 Mini, anyone? The same tipsters also expect the release of a new 8-inch "Galaxy-line tablet" in June, which suggests the Galaxy Note 8.0 may get a regular Tab counterpart. We wouldn't base our buying strategies around the rumors when Samsung hasn't said anything that's truly on the record, but it might be wise to hold off if you're not in a rush.

Even if you're unfamiliar with Russian games publisher ZeptoLab, you've almost certainly heard of, if not played, its flagship puzzler Cut the Rope, starring little monster Om Nom. And if you haven't, where have you been? The franchise only has more than 300 million downloads and 60 million monthly active players.
The success story rings true with fellow European developer Rovio, which, of course, has experienced global success with the Angry Birds brand, but we're not here to talk about the temperamental avians.
ZeptoLab was founded by two brothers, and now has a 54 strong team, with a development office in Russia, a HQ in the UK, and a PR agency on each continent.
Just last week, ZeptoLab released the third edition of its Cut the Rope game, Cut the Rope: Time Travel, which bagged our App Of The Day spot. With the company's CEO Misha Lyalin on hand to unveil the new title, he discussed the games market with Mobile Entertainment, and what lies ahead for the rapidly growing company.
When quizzed on the adoption of the game, Lyalin explained: "Frankly, the number of downloads isn't the benchmark we're striving for – we could increase it tomorrow if we wanted to. We're more interested in how the franchise has grown organically, and how many people are returning to play daily and monthly."
Cut the Rope is available as a free-to-play option and also for a £0.62 fee, which begs the question, is freemium or paid more successful? "There wasn't a freemium model that worked when we launched, which forced us to enter as a paid option.
"Our business has changed since then and our revenues are based around free downloads, in-app purchases, in-app advertising and premium, which offers us mixed monetisation. For us, freemium with in-app purchases dominates, with advertising in second place."
And speaking of advertising, some of the branded creative in the Cut the Rope games include content from the likes of Deezer, Land Rover, Spec Savers, and Microsoft. Seemingly there's no shortage of clients, but Lyalin believes the ad space still needs to improve. "Advertising for mobile is still in a very early stage and the most popular form is CPI – we tend to feature ads promoting other apps and games, and they're our biggest customers.
"I think ads have to become more meaningful and the format has to change and go beyond banners for consumers to become interested. When that happens there's no doubt in my mind that large brands will be keen to join the market, and a lot of money will flow."
Discussing whether rich media could be a solution to changing up the formats, Lyalin declared "Rich media won't necessarily change anything, it's all about content, and advertising has to be in context. In the meantime, things like movie trailers are great because they're an entertaining form of advertising."
Beyond games and advertising, however, ZeptoLab also has a burgeoning merchandise arm forCut the Rope, but how important is that division? "The short answer is that it's doing really well. Actually, it's awesome. The long answer is that it's a good and necessary component for our business to grow, and it's a great way for us to market our brand and generate revenues."
That said, the CEO assures they're not solely concentrating on stuffed Om Noms. "Animation is also a big part of what we do, and that's because we're trying to tell a story behind Cut The Rope. The next step is to produce a lot more games, but we're also exploring the opportunities for other products. A huge number of people know Cut The Rope, but we want a huge number of people to know the game came from ZeptoLab. There are 10,000 ways to do that, and growing Cut The Rope is the number one way to begin.
"We've signed off a TV show with Sony Pictures. We've seen how it looks and we're pretty happy with it, but it's still yet to be finalised."
The games market is currently under scrutiny from the Office of Fair Trading, which has grown concerned that users of freemium games are being conned, and Lyalin offered his thoughts. "I think some companies can easily scam people into making payments when they blur the lines between being a game and a casino - it's just the nature of the business.
"Freemium is still in a developing stage, but the industry will soon reach a point where consumers will understand how in-app purchases really work, and when that happens, companies that scam people will disappear. It's just a matter of people being sensible and understanding the merits of the space.
"Cut The Rope is a great game, but while people will buy iPhones for £500, they will always weigh up the difference between a free app and a paid one. I think free will dominate in that respect, which means companies will be able to profit through advertising and IAPs. That means it doesn't matter who criticises the market, freemium gaming is the future and nothing will change that."

A number of retailers have been left furious ahead of the Samsung Galaxy S 4 release date, after delays in supply have left many unable to fulfill pre-orders for the device,Mobile Magazine has reported.
Several networks in the US were forced to delay the release of the new Samsung smartphone as a result of the supply issues, while the UK has also had to move its release date back.
While retailers are planning to fulfil pre-orders according to when they were placed, it is thought that supply will return to normal by the end of next week.
According to Phones 4u, Samsung is citing 'unprecedented demand' for the delay.
A spokesman for Carphone Warehouse said: "We have seen huge customer interest in the Samsung Galaxy S4. Our number one priority is our customers and we are working hard to ensure that we fulfill as many pre-orders for the handset as possible. We will ensure that every customer impacted by any supply issues is contacted and informed of the likely delivery of their new handset."
Meanwhile, a Three spokesman added: "There is huge global demand and interest in the Samsung S4 - which is launching globally this weekend. As such Samsung have notified us that they are experiencing stock constraints. We understand that this may be frustrating for customers waiting for their phone or who wish to buy immediately. We are working closely with Samsung and we are regularly updating our customers and channels on any developments with stock, to ensure our customers receive their phones as soon as possible."
"Phones 4u has been informed by Samsung that stock of the Galaxy S4 handset will be in short supply across the market this launch weekend due to unprecedented demand,” noted a Phones 4u spokesperson. “Our absolute priority is our customers who have pre-ordered the handset, and the stock we have received will be used to fulfil pre-orders first. Our first delivery will go out to those pre-order customers as expected at launch, but there may be a delay to some customers who have pre-ordered their Galaxy S4 more recently."

Apple has launched its latest commercial, during which the firm claims that more photos are captured by the iPhone than any other device.
A bold claim to make, it remains unclear how Apple would know if the iPhone was infect the world's most popular device for snapping those precious moments; be it a smartphone or camera.
Whether Apple has been taking a sneaky peek at users' EXIF data, or if it simply sent out teams of Geniuses on to the streets in order to count the number of snap-happy iPhone users, the firm certainly believes the claim enough for it to base an entire advert.
Given the increasing ownership of smartphones worldwide, matched with the photo capabilities of the latest handsets, it wouldn't be too much of a shock to learn that smartphones had overtaken traditional cameras as the preferred photo capturing device – be it an iPhone or other device.
