Well, it looks as if Twitter isn't the only one announcing something beta-related today. BlackBerry has (quietly) released Beta Zone for BlackBerry 10, an application geared toward folks who are game to try stuff before it's ready for prime time. The firm's newly outed app gives members an easy-to-access hub where they can download the latest software arriving on the platform in beta. As you'd expect, Beta Zone for BB10 won't cost a dime to download, though you will need to have an account before being able to access any of those rough-hewn apps.

The two most anticipated smartphones of next week's IFA show, the Samsung Galaxy Note 3 and Sony Xperia Z1, haven't been officially announced, but neither manufacturer has made any secret of their existence. So, we aren't at all surprised to see that the two devices are starting to become common knowledge amongst the employees at various carriers. An anonymous tipster who claims to work for Three UK has sent us images of an internal doc which shows when the carrier will begin selling the pair of devices, with the Note 3 arriving on the 16th of September and the Z1 following on the 24th. Even if this is accurate, we still can't be sure Three will be the first to launch them -- nor can we account for any potential delays -- but it's at least a solid indicator that the phones will arrive sooner rather than later. We don't have much longer to wait before we find out, but it's something to chew on over the weekend.

Almost double 2012 figures.
Android can be found powering smartphones from Samsung, HTC, Sony, Huawei, ZTE and beyond, and such widespread reach will push Google OS smartphone app revenues to reach $6.8 billion in 2013.
ABI Research says the figure is almost double 2012 smartphone app revenues, but still trailing behind the overall smartphone revenues of iOS. However, by market share, Android's app revenues will rise from 59.1 per cent to 65.9 per cent in the next year.
In-app ads are behind the surge of Android's smartphone app revenues, with Google's analytics and search experience outshining Apple's.
Additionally, operator billing across Android is also helping to encourage business, especially in emerging markets such as Latin America and Asia-Pacific.
Josh Flood, senior analyst, ABI, said: "Apple’s iOS still leads all the other mobile operating systems’ revenues by a significant margin; however, the greater number of Android smartphones in use is clawing back Apple’s lead in this market. This year, Android smartphones will ship by a factor of more than three-to-one to iPhones."
The Android-based Amazon Appstore is currently celebrating its one-year anniversary since launching in the UK, and has listed its most popular apps since launch and is offering a £20 giveaway.

Google’s Nexus 7 Wi-Fi tablet has been released in the UK, with O2 claiming exclusivity over the 4G-ready version due for release on September 13th.
The Wi-Fi version of the tablet has already been released on August 28th, as ASUS previously announced, but details concerning the upcoming 4G-ready model have now also been confirmed by ASUS.
O2 claim the 4G-capable version of the updated bestsellingAndroid tablet. The 4G Nexus 7 will be exclusively available in O2 stores when it’s released on September 13th, with the Wi-Fi model, which can already be found in PC World and Currys, also there to be purchased.
The 16GB Wi-Fi Nexus 7 starts at £200, with the 32GB coming in at £250 in O2 stores. The 4G model can be preordered on O2’s site now, costing £320 and coming with a free £30 case for those who buy it before its release.
Google’s Nexus 7, which runs Android 4.3 (Jelly Bean) is manufactured by ASUS, and sports 2GB of RAM, a 1.2 megapixel front-facing camera, a five megapixel 1080p-recording rear camera and a quad-core 1.5Ghz Snapdragon S4 Pro processor. As previously revealed, the processor powers a display said by ASUS to be “the world’s sharpest 7” tablet screen” with over 2.3 million pixels on-screen. Apps for the Nexus 7 are found on Google’s Play store.
"The new Nexus 7 is a fantastic way to experience Android, whether you're using it for the first time or have used it before," said David Johnson, general manager of devices for O2 UK.
ASUS regional manager Jonathon Santaub added: “The Nexus 7 sets a new benchmark for tablets."

Pioneer's original DDJ-WeGO was an effort to secure some of the entry-level DJ-dollars (it does pretty well at the other end already). This time around, there's more of a focus on iOS, with a grip along the back that doubles as a stand for your iPhone or iPad (a lightning cable is included, too). This also means that as well as support for PC and Mac DJ software (Virtual DJ LE is bundled,) you can ride the fader with the fancy new Djay too. The rest of the hardware is pretty familiar ground, with two jog-wheels, effects and a tiny mixing console crammed-in to the small footprint. Learner DJs can improve their skills thanks to visual prompts provided by the LEDs (that flash with the beat etc.,) and USB power means one less cable to worry about. Importantly there's onboard audio, so you get the full DJ / headphone monitoring experience, and a decent audio line out. Prospective spinners will have to wait until October to get one, at a cost of $429. A shade more than the predecessor, but you do get three spiffy full-body colors (red, white and black) to choose from.

After a series of delays, it looks like PlayJam's GameStick is making its way to market relatively soon. Whether your allegiance lies with Amazon or GameStop, come September 30th both will begin shipping the tiny console, as noticed by Liliputing. What's more, PlayJam itself promises that the last of its crowdfunded unit-allotment will ship directly to backers by mid-September. The news doesn't stop there, as it recently passed FCC certification too. Uncle Sam's documents -- RF exposure statements! Label placement! -- don't contain much we didn't already know, but if you want to see the GameStick's user manual, here you go.

Can Samsung's Hennessy herald a new era for the flip phone? Probably not. But, oh, the nostalgia...
Can Samsung's Hennessy herald a new era for the flip phone? Probably not. But, oh, the nostalgia...
This week, after a period of holiday indolence, I tried to catch up with what's been going on in mobile.
One story caught my eye above all others.
Samsung's new Android-based Hennessy clamshell phone.
This is massive, isn't it?
First there's the name. For British men in their 40s like me, there's only one Hennessy and that's Terry Hennessy, the Derby County midfielder of the 1970s. This guy is about as far from the gelled-up 21st century football athlete as you can get. Balding, overweight and looks about 50.
I've included a pic. See for yourself.
Much as I'd love it, I doubt Samsung named the phone after Terry. Instead, it's the fact that the Hennessy phone is a clamshell that makes this such eye-poping news.
In mobile, you can try all sorts of things. Your directors can embezzle and go on the run, you can launch a PR stunt that ends in dozens injured. But the one thing you must never NEVER do is make a clamshell phone.
It's just so 2005. Like bull bars or Steve Brookstein.
Clamshells take us back to a time before the iPhone and the Galaxy, before what has become known as the slab-opoly.
Younger readers will be getting fed up by now, muttering "get on with it Granddad, and tell us what the **** a clamshell actually is."
Well, for those of us who were fully pubic in the early noughties, clamshells were very daring. Quite the thing, oh yes.
And Samsung was all over the space like a limpet (sorry, I'm overcooking the crustacean allusions aren't I?).
Actually, Motorola was the first to realise that a phone that opened and closed had big advantages over the competition. It launched the StarTac in 1996 at the very reasonable price of $1000. People loved the fact that no buttons were needed for the essentials.
Take a call? Just open it. End a call? Snap it shut.
By the early noughties nearly all OEMs were making dozens of what had now become known as flip phones. They sold well, but it was Motorola that set the standard. Its Razr series shifted an amazing 130m in four years from 2004.
In fact, only Nokia resisted the lure of the flip – and took a barrage of stick in the process. In the end, Nokia's obstinacy was vindicated. it did launch a handful of clamshells, but by then everyone had moved on to sliders. And it had the daddy of them all in the N95.
We all know what happened next. iPhone blah blah blah. But clamshells didn't completely disappear.
Although there was a moment when flippers tried to be smartphones (Nokia N76, BlackBerry Pearl), the destiny of the clamshell was to be the form factor for 'les miserables'.
Today, the only customers for the Samsung Mantra and the Doro Phone Easy are the elderly, the infirm and the tragically unhip.
Which is what makes Samsung's move so amazing.
Reports say the Samsung SCH-W789 Hennessy is a proper smartphone, running Jelly Bean, a 1.2GHz quad-core processor and 1GB of RAM.
Can it ever take its place among the sleek glass slabs that dominate the handset market today?
Probably not. The clamshell has been tainted by the uncool brush and I believe it's unlikely this phone make it outside Asia Pac.
But I'm sure there must be iPhone users out there who'd secretly fancy a phone they could answer with gloves on. And who long for the dramatic flourish only a flip can provide.
Here are two scenarios...
Hennessy user to angry girlfriend: "I may be in the gutter, darling, but I am staring up at the stars…" (snaps phone shut within stylish flick of the wrist)
iPhone user to angry girlfriend: "I may be drunk, darling, but you are ugly. And I will be sober in the morning…" (presses wrong button)
Girlfriend: "….Keith, are you still there?"
Keith (looking for reading glasses): "Yes, er pressed the speaker icon…"
Girlfriend: "What was that about ugly? I didn't quite catch it."
Keith (has now accidentally launched camera on his iPhone): "I was quoting Churchill."
Girlfriend: "The insurance dog? What's he got to do with it"
And so on.
Maybe it's still too early for a fully-fledged flip return. But I hope OEMs can find some way of re-invigorating the form factor.
After all, it seems to work very well for the MacBook and the George Foreman Grill. And the oyster, of course.

The executive vice president of Samsung’s mobile arm has confirmed the existence of company’s smartwatch, theGalaxy Gear.
In an interview with The Korea Times this week, Lee Young-hee gave brief details about the wearable tech device, saying that the Galaxy Gear would use a “non-flexible display”. The watch, which would connect to Samsung’s mobile devices, is said to be aimed at “young trend setters”.
"The new device will enhance and enrich the current smart mobile experience in many ways. It will lead a new trend in smart mobile communications. We are confident that the Gear will add meaningful momentum to the mobile industry,” added Lee.
Samsung previously filed a trademark for Galaxy Gear and confirmed it was working on some kind of smartwatch.
Lee went on to state that official announcement of the smartwatch would take place on September 4th, at a Samsung press event in Berlin. The consumer electronics fair IFA opens two days later on the 6th.
The Samsung Galaxy Note III is also rumoured to be showcased at the event. Lee confirmed that that was the case, but refused to give further details.
Several mobile manufacturers, including Samsung and Apple, have been rumoured to be designing smartwatches for some time now. Concrete details about Apple’s rumoured device, nicknamed the'iWatch', and Microsoft's potential smartwatch, are yet to emerge.
The Sony Smartwatch 2 arrives in the UK next month.

Apple’s next flagship iPhone is rumoured to launch ten days after its announcement on September 10th.
Japanese publication Nikkei hinted last week that the new iPhone will be available on September 20th, and today,TmoNews has reported that T-Mobile is blocking employee requests for vacation on September 20th, 21st and 22nd.
This news strongly indicates that there is a major product launch due on those dates, and with reports that Apple’s new array of devices will be announced on the 10th coming from just about every tech blog out there, it seems incredibly likely that the product in question will be the next-gen iPhone.
Apple’s new iPhone is expected to be called either the iPhone 5S or iPhone 6. It is expected to have a 1.2GHz quad core processor, 2GB of RAM, 4G LTE and possibly fingerprint scanning technology.
September 20th is a Friday, and Apple has released every single iPhone but the iPhone 4 on a Friday.

Terraria will appear on iOS devices beginning tomorrow, August 29. The popular 2D exploration game will start with a $4.99 asking price for the universal app, compatible with iPhone, iPod Touch and iPad.
Re-Logic put development duties in the hands of Codeglue, who redesigned the controls for a multi-touch interface, and implemented other tweaks to make the game work in a portable setting. The game has also been optimized for retina display. Terrarria is planned for Android and Windows Phone devices "soon."

Ouya advisor Ed Fries says system can't be judged by old metrics, unsure what success in today's market would look like
The Ouya Kickstarter was met by gamers with much enthusiasm (about $8 million worth of it), but the Ouya itself has been met with substantially more derision. In a guest post on VentureBeat today, original Xbox team member and current Ouya advisor Ed Fries spoke up to defend the system, saying it's being judged using dated metrics that don't apply to a new system with a new business model.
"Among the criticisms is that 'only' one out of three Ouya owners have purchased at least one game," Fries noted. "While the folks at Ouya are incredibly proud of this early outcome, some have chosen to interpret this as a glass that's two-thirds empty."
Fries said it's impossible to tell if that characterization is appropriate yet because a shift in gaming toward open distribution models is upending the entire industry and what works (and how) in unpredictable ways.
"Just as there was no way to compare Minecraft with World of Warcraft three years ago, today it is nearly impossible to compare Ouya with the next-generation consoles set to debut this year," Fries said. "This is because the game has changed dramatically for the interactive entertainment industry - and so have the rules."
While Fries admitted he didn't know what success would look like in this drastically different industry, he stressed that Ouya is an open console with the ability "to evolve as needed." Just as the original Xbox was straddling the offline and online gaming eras, Fries suggested Ouya is arriving as gaming evolves to more open platforms with fewer gatekeepers and an expectation of free-to-try games.

What if your Kindle displayed useful information as the “screensaver”? Now it can thanks to this extension of the Kindle weather display hack we covered a year ago. [Pablo Jiménez Mateo] figured out how to display time, date, weather, and tasks as his Kindle wallpaper while retaining the original functionality of the device as an ePaper reader.
The hack isn’t strictly standalone. Like the Kindle weather station hack on which it is based, you need a computer to act as the server. We see this as a good thing. The server generates a vector graphic which is used as the Kindle screensaver. This process of scraping and packaging the data is just too much for the computing power of the Kindle alone.
Now that [Pablo] got this working without disrupting the normal function of the device, you can remix the hack with your own information sources by working with the server-side code. For those that aren’t familiar with the Linux commands needed to get the Kindle ready, don’t worry. This is reasonably non-invasive. You do need to Jailbreak your device. But once you do, the steps used simply load a small script to grab the images.

The highly regarded Nexus 4 Android smartphone has had its price cut in the UK.
Google has chopped £80 off both the 16GB and 8GB versions of the handset, meaning they can be had for just £199 and £159 respectively.
Unlike many smartphone deals, these prices are for users to buy the phone outright without any strings or contracts. This allows owners to choose their own tariff and take their pick from the large number of cheap SIM-only deals available.
The Nexus 4, which is actually manufactured by LG, launched in November 2012 and is currently the top-tier smartphone in Google’s first party line-up.
It runs the latest version of the Android OS and houses a 1.5GHz quad-core processor. It also offers wireless charging and a 768x1280 320ppi screen.

iPhone owners wanting to upgrade to a new handset could be about to receive a new money-saving deal from Apple.
9to5 Mac reports that Apple will shortly reveal an iPhone trade-in program that will allow owners to hand over their old handset at the point of purchase and receive a significant discount on alternative models.
Although this has not been confirmed, it is presumed that the offer is being prepared in time for the anticipated launches of the iPhone 5S and iPhone 5C next month.
The site attributes the plan to Apple CEO Tim Cook’s desire to increase the number of iPhones sold at Apple stores, which currently only claim about 20 per cent of the market.
Many mobile operators already offer their own trade-in schemes that can be used at the point of purchasing a new device.
Apple has allegedly this week implemented a staff-training program to get store workers familiar with the new trade-in process. This is required to be completed by the first week of September.

Free the Games projects draw speculation over the speed and source of funding
The first two games to receive funding from Ouya's Free the Games initiative have aroused controversy over the speed and nature of their crowdfunding campaigns.
Free the Games pledges to match funding for all crowdfunded games that agree to a limited term of exclusivity on the Ouya microconsole.
So far only two titles participating in the million dollar initiative have met their funding targets: Elementary my Dear Holmes, and Gridiron Thunder.
This would be great news for the developers, but a number of backers and Ouya owners have begun to voice their doubts about the legitimacy of the campaigns, with special attention given to Gridiron Thunder.
The major concerns stem from the speed with which the projects were funded, the high average donation amount, and the large number of new and duplicate accounts backing the project.

Future monetisation will happen through new products due to launch within the next year.
GameAnalytics has stopped charging developers fees for using its tools. The decision was made to help smaller studios – and larger ones – compete with EA, Rovio and so on, who can afford large data-tracking teams.
The Denmark-based company supports iOS, Android, Unity, Flash and Corona, and wants to provide a free platform that allows developers to 'operate games as live services' by analysing daily player feedback.
There's no catch, according to the business, who explains that all paying customers can use their plans for free. Revenues will now be generated through a series of forthcoming products that are set to launch within six to 12 months.
GameAnalytics has been publicly available since the start of 2013 and is now used in almost 1,000 games.
